In the beautiful country of Israel, a sandstorm blew over the Dead Sea. But this storm never stopped churning. Though there is no wind, the sand continues to blow within its bottle, forming shapes with its grains only to destroy them again in an instant. A constant cycle of creation and destruction. Once it created much more than simple dust and dunes. It mimiced nature, creating splendid trees and towering structures that defied gravity, or figures that appeared to move on their own before crashing back into the earth. Now it seems to favor making small flowers or pleasant designs against the glass of its enclosure.

Soul - Praying Mantis
Mantodea (or mantises, mantes) is an order of insects that contains over 2,400 species and about 430 genera in 15 families worldwide in temperate and tropical habitats. Most of the species are in the family Mantidae.
Appearance
Mantises have two grasping, spiked forelegs ("raptorial legs") in which prey items are caught and held securely. In most insect legs, including the posterior four legs of a mantis, the coxa and trochanter combine as an inconspicuous base of the leg; in the raptorial legs however, the coxa and trochanter combine to form a segment about as long as the femur, which is a spiky part of the grasping apparatus. Located at the base of the femur are a set of discoidal spines, usually four in number, but ranging from zero to as many as five depending on the species. These spines are preceded by a number of tooth-like tubercles, which, along with a similar series of tubercles along the tibia and the apical claw near its tip, give the foreleg of the mantis its grasp on its prey. The foreleg ends in a delicate tarsus made of between four and five segments and ending in a two-toed claw with no arolium and used as a walking appendage.
The mantis thorax consists of a prothorax, a mesothorax, and a metathorax. In all species apart from the genus Mantoida, the prothorax, which bears the head and forelegs, is much longer than the other two thoracic segments. The prothorax is also flexibly articulated, allowing for a wide range of movement of the head and forelimbs while the remainder of the body remains more or less immobile. The articulation of the neck is also remarkably flexible; some species of mantis can rotate the head nearly 180 degrees.
Mantises may have a visual range of up to 20 metres. Their compound eyes may comprise up to 10,000 ommatidia. The eyes are widely spaced and laterally situated, affording a wide binocular field of vision and, at close range, precise stereoscopic vision. The dark spot on each eye is a pseudopupil. As their hunting relies heavily on vision, mantises are primarily diurnal. Many species, however, fly at night, and then may be attracted to artificial lights. Nocturnal flight is especially important to males in search of less-mobile females that they locate by detecting their pheromones. Flying at night exposes mantises to fewer bird predators than diurnal flight would. Many mantises also have an auditory thoracic organ that helps them to avoid bats by detecting their echolocation and responding evasively.
Mantises can be loosely categorized as being macropterous (long-winged), brachypterous (short-winged), micropterous (vestigial-winged), or apterous (wingless). If not wingless, a mantis has two sets of wings: the outer wings, or tegmina, are usually narrow, opaque, and leathery. They function as camouflage and as a shield for the hind wings. The hind wings are much broader, more delicate, and transparent. They are the main organs of flight, if any. Brachypterous species are at most minimally capable of flight, other species not at all. The wings are mostly erected in these mantises for alarming enemies and attracting females. Even in many macropterous species the female is much heavier than the male, has much shorter wings, and rarely takes flight if she is capable of it at all.
The abdomen of all mantises consist of ten tergites with a corresponding set of nine sternites visible in males and seven visible in females. The slim abdomen of most males allows them to take flight more easily while the thicker abdomen of the females houses the reproductive machinery for generating the ootheca. The abdomen of both sexes ends in a pair of cerci.
Behavior
Most mantises are exclusively predatory while exceptions are predominantly so. Insects form their primary prey, but the diet of a mantis changes as it grows larger. In its first instar a mantis eats small insects such as tiny flies or its own siblings. In later instars it does not or cannot profitably pursue such small prey. In the final instar as a rule the diet still includes more insects than anything else, but large species have been known to prey on small scorpions, lizards, frogs, birds, snakes, fish, and even rodents; they feed on any species small enough for them to capture, but large enough to engage their attention. For example, a large mantis feeding on a bee or bug might be pestered with impunity by jackal flies and biting midges that it would readily have eaten in its first instar. Large prey tends to increase in value with the cube of its size: a blowfly four times as long as a jackal fly represents a meal about 64 times as massive. However, the chewing action can be always triggered by picking the mantis up to deny it traction and stimulating its mandibles with food. When a female mantis is into her final growth spurt and is accumulating nutrients to make eggs, the largest available prey that she can manage is the most effective for her to concentrate on.
The majority of mantises are ambush predators, but some ground and bark species actively pursue their prey. For example, members of a few genera such as the ground mantids, Entella, Ligaria and Ligariella, run over dry ground seeking prey much as tiger beetles do. Species that are predominantly ambush predators camouflage themselves and spend long periods standing perfectly still. They largely wait for their prey to stray within reach, but most mantises chase tempting prey if it strays closely enough. In pure ambush mode a mantis lashes out at remarkable speed when a target does get within reach, details of the speed and mode attack varying with the species. A mantis catches prey items and grips them with grasping, spiked forelegs. The mantis usually holds its prey with one arm between the head and thorax, and the other on the abdomen. Then, if the prey does not resist, the mantis eats it alive. However, if the prey does resist, the mantis often eats it head first, some species of mantises being more prone to the behaviour than others. Unlike sucking predatory arthropods, a mantis does not liquefy prey tissues or drain its prey's body fluids, but simply slices and chews it with its mandibles as convenient, often from one end. If it should happen to have begun feeding on the midsection of the prey, it typically ends up eating first one remnant end from one foreclaw, then the rest from the other, leaving nothing but accidentally severed fragments such as limbs.
Chinese Mantids have been found to gain benefits in survivorship, growth, and fecundity by supplementing their diet with pollen. In replicated laboratory tests the first instar actively fed on pollen just after hatching, thereby avoiding starvation in the absence of prey. The adults fed on pollen-laden insects, attaining fecundity as high as those fed on larger numbers of insects alone.
Defense
Generally, mantises protect themselves by camouflage and concealment. When directly threatened, many mantis species stand tall and spread their forelegs, with their wings fanning out wide. The fanning of the wings makes the mantis seem larger and more threatening, with some species having bright colors and patterns on their hind wings and inner surfaces of their front legs for this purpose. If harassment persists, a mantis may strike with its forelegs and attempt to pinch or bite. As part of the threat display, some species also may produce a hissing sound by expelling air from the abdominal spiracles. When flying at night, at least some mantises are able to detect the echolocation sounds produced by bats, and when the frequency begins to increase rapidly, indicating an approaching bat, they stop flying horizontally and begin a descending spiral toward the safety of the ground, often preceded by an aerial loop or spin.
Mantises, like stick insects, show rocking behaviour in which the insect makes rhythmic, repetitive side-to-side movements. Functions proposed for this behaviour include the enhancement of crypsis by means of the resemblance to vegetation moving in the wind. However, the repetitive swaying movements may be most important in allowing the insects to discriminate objects from the background by their relative movement, a visual mechanism typical of animals with simpler sight systems. Rocking movements by these generally sedentary insects may replace flying or running as a source of relative motion of objects in the visual field.
Mantises are camouflaged, and most species make use of protective coloration to blend in with the foliage or substrate, both to avoid predators, and to better snare their prey. Various species have evolved to not only blend with the foliage, but to mimic it, appearing as either living or withered leaves, sticks, tree bark, blades of grass, flowers, or even stones. Some species in Africa and Australia are able to turn black after a molt following a fire in the region to blend in with the fire ravaged landscape (a type of adaptive melanism referred to as fire melanism). While mantises can bite, they have no venom. They can also slash captors with their raptorial legs (which is often preceded by a threat display wherein the mantis rears back and spreads its front legs and wings (if present), often revealing vivid colors and/or eyespots to startle a predator). Mantises are without chemical protection; many large insectivores eat mantises, including Scops owls, shrikes, bullfrogs, chameleons, and Milk Snakes.

✤ NAME:Leila ✤ Origin: Hebrew ✤ Meaning: Dark Beauty ✤ GENDER:Female ✤ ALIGNMENT:Neutral Good
✤ FEL ESSENCE:Perpetual Sandstorm ✤ SOUL:Praying Mantis
✤ POSSIBLE POWERS:Note: Water is a hindrance to her powers. While not completely prohibiting her from manipulating the sand, water can destroy what she creates, and molding it takes much more time and effort.
Perpetual Material: While unable to create sand out of nothing, Leila is capable of generating more where there is something to start with. With even a single grain (though the less she has to work with the slower production will be at first -- the rate grows exponentially dependent upon availability) she can create an unlimited supply of sand to do with as she pleases.
Sand Manipulation: Much like the storm she originates from, Leila can create shapes in the sand big and small. These shapes are limited only to her imagination. Giant sand castles, sandmen and trees, you name it! With enough focus of energy she is even capable of allowing them to move on their own, though they have no intelligence and only act on her command. These moving sand figures are short-lived and require more energy than she cares to expend on a regular basis.
Sand Shield: Where sand is available to pull from, Leila can create a sort of shield similar in appearance to a tornado around a target of her choosing (including herself). This shield can protect against things depending on the strength of the shield. Weaker shields may only keep out smaller objects or substances, but a more violent tornado would be required to throw off anything too big.
Twister: The same as she is able to create a twister for defense, Leila can use them offensively. They can range from tiny dust devils thrown out rapidly, or she can create much bigger, dangerous twisters if she uses enough power. This can be incredibly draining.
✤ PERSONALITY: Leila is the very definition of peace and tranquility. She is a tender individual, gentle with all. Soft-spoken and hard to excite, she is a very relaxing young miss to be around. Not surprisingly she finds meditation to be a good use of her time, which helps her to focus the energy she needs to work with sand.
Despite all this, to say she is boring or without a sense of fun would be the furthest thing from the truth. Where she has an interest in something she is passionate, and her sense of humor comes heavily linked to her love of good natured pranks. She will often play harmless jokes on others, only to sit by and watch them play out, acting as if she had no hand in it, able to keep on the best of poker faces.
When her rage is drawn out she is as dangerous as the sandstorm of her essence. She'll lash out quickly and violently. Her reactions are verbal towards the person, but she will often expel small dust devils in her rage. Physical violence towards people themselves is reserved solely for self defense. But when all is said and done, she will return to her previous state of calm. She rarely feels regret for her heated reactions, as they are well deserved in her eyes. There are very few things that can get her heated enough to react in anything more than a pleasant, well mannered way. Most notable is her heavy stance on prejudice of any kind. The equality and acceptance of all is quite important to her.
Above all else, different cultures, religions, and the histories of people all over the globe are exceptionally dear to her. It is here that she will display the most passion. Leila also has an extreme love of art and beauty. She sees beauty in many things around her, even in the smallest of things. This applies to both physical and non-physical beauty. The love displayed in a small gesture between friends, or a bone dry tree that once held such life but is now just a ghost. She may be deeply moved by something seemingly trivial to another, and she may also see the utter lack of beauty in a particularly ugly-hearted person. She loves to create, and takes advantage of her sand manipulation regularly as her own personal art form.

✤ NAME:Alexis “Phoenix” Argyris ✤ GENDER:Male ✤ AGE:Thirty-two ✤ OCCUPATION:Owner of 'Ambrosia', family restaurant in Durem. ✤ RACE:Human; Greek ✤ LIKES:Phsyical and emotional contact with others, hair product, playing games with his daughter, leafy greens, and small animals. ✤ DISLIKES:When Zoe gets a booboo, horror movies, fast food, flaky employees, and being unable to satisfy customers.
✤ LOOKS:Standing just shy of six feet and weighing 160lbs, Phoenix takes pride in his appearance. He boasts his minimal body fat to his friends, and always dresses sharp – usually slacks and dress shoes with a button-up shirt. Even when he's being “lazy” he only downgrades the top to a muscle shirt. He keeps his natural, almost silvery white hair neatly combed back into a low ponytail that hangs just past his shoulder blades, and he has joyful golden eyes set into dark tan toned skin. His black facial hair he keeps neatly trimmed to keep up his respectable appearance while still having a delightful amount of scruff.
✤ PERSONALITY:Phoenix is happy all the time; he's social and charismatic. If it weren't for his bad pickup lines and going completely over the top with sweetness, he'd have no problem finding a girl. He thinks he's smooth, but it's as if he learned all of his moves from a bad 80's film. Alas, his daughter and his restaurant are his life. Not to say he doesn't try anymore, but he puts considerably less effort into developing a romantic life. He's driven, always improving on his restaurant, and busting butt to make sure everything is always done right and fast. The sooner he gets home to see Zoe the better, but he's not the type to leave early just because he's the boss. And if he is late, the babysitter lives conveniently on their floor. He's very family oriented. Every Sunday night he and Zoe visit his parents and brother for a home cooked meal. On work days he still cooks most nights and watches movies with his daughter, and on days off they often go to the park or zoo. Alone time doesn't appeal to Phoenix at all. He's a bleeding heart when it comes to his daughter. When she's hurt or sick, no matter how tough she is about it, he'll cry and worry incessantly. He dislikes anything gruesome or gorey, hence his aversion to horror movies. He'd rather something funny or theatrical.
✤ HISTORY:Shortly after his family immigrated to Gaia, Phoenix was born to the Argyris family. They used their life savings to renovate a vacant building into a traditional Greek restaurant, 'Ambrosia'. Their life was comfortable, but always busy, and both sons learned to help at Ambrosia from a young age. The obvious choice for who to take over the restaurant when their parents got too old was Katsaros, the eldest. However Kat pursued a career in architecture, leaving Ambrosia to Phoenix. He was grateful.
He met Adriana, a hostess at Ambrosia, when she was hired shortly after his promotion to manager. His full ownership of the restaurant came after the birth of their daughter, Zoe, but Adriana had as much intent to stay with the family as she did the restaurant. She was too young to devote herself to that lifestyle, and left before Zoe turned two.
Zoe was five, and smarter, than she should have been, when she started asking for a sibling. Phoenix was nearing thirty-two. Originally he bought Zoe a pitbull puppy, Dionysus (Dio for short -- he will only be ), hoping that would satisfy her request. It didn't. Fortunately they live comfortably in an upscale apartment in Durem, close to the restaurant. He had an excellent source of income, business was booming, and he seemed to have a fair chance with adoption. It was Zoe who first heard of the Lab from a classmate. She made up her mind on the spot, and Phoenix wants to oblige.
✤ NAME:Zoe Melina Argyris (frequently "honey/honey boo/honey bear/etc." from middle name) ✤ GENDER:Female ✤ AGE:Six ✤ OCCUPATION:None; Student ✤ RACE:Human; Greek ✤ LIKES:Fish and reptiles, American Girl dolls, peanut butter and jelly, educational television, and getting to visit her dad at work. ✤ DISLIKES:Nightmares, sticky messes, noisy kids, Phoenix's "bad 80's music", and cockroaches.
✤ LOOKS:The spitting image of her father, Zoe was born with equally snow white hair that curls magnificently, which she likes to keep tied up in two corkscrew pigtails. She has long bangs which brush the lids of her eyes, which are large and golden (from whence her middle name meaning 'honey' originates) against her tan skin. She has a love for cute clothes, particularly with lace, and mary janes. She has a small build, a bit short for her age.
✤ PERSONALITY:Zoe is (unfortunately) one of those children that you can't sneak anything past. She's smart, so if you try to pull the wool over her eyes she will immediately call you out on it. She's an intuitive child, and is not easily put off by strangers unless she feels something is wrong with them. If she thinks someone is okay, she is the furthest thing from shy. She's quite outspoken for a little girl, and always makes sure her opinion is heard. She understands a surprising amount for her age, which often leads to her dad forgetting he's talking to a kid. While she might hate the sound of her dad's music, she absolutely loves when he listens to it because they will dance and have fun for hours, so she's okay with it. Zoe also has the tendency to take her dreams very seriously. A bad one can mess her up for the entire day, and she always thinks good ones means something nice is going to happen.
✤ HISTORY:Zoe does not remember her mother. She's seen pictures, but no one spoke much of her. Beyond her initial curiosity when she was old enough to understand that she should have a mother but did not, Zoe never cared to ask much about her. Since her dad (and extended family, of course) was all she had, that's all she cared about and just having him was always good enough for her.
Due to her no-nonsense attitude, Zoe immediately had a hard time making friends when she started school. It was then that she started voicing to Phoenix just how badly she wanted a little brother or sister. That way she could have someone to bond with, and teach to be more like her instead of loud, rambunctious and silly like the kids at school. She was happy to get her puppy Dionysus (while her dad calls him Dio -- she has no idea why -- she calls him Dino), but it wasn't enough for her. She's been bugging Phoenix incessantly about the Lab ever since her classmate mentioned it.
