So the Moon is falling...
Otto came back very late. His fingers and nose were red and cold from his time in Canada. He walked into the apartment, shedding the coat and winter boots off in a hurry. Canada had been cold. Deus was smouldering hot in comparison. Even then, his frozen digits burned with the chill that had yet to thaw. His heart and mood were still raw from his reflecting he'd done that night in the snow. He felt drained.
With a sniffle he shut the door belatedly, stepping over the melting snow pile his boots had left. "Cami?" He murmured aloud. He wasn't sure if she was even here. The night lights were usually kept on, despite his Fear of the dark slowly healing thanks to his artifact. They lights were now only meant for Cami.
Maybe she was here. Maybe she wasn't. Regardless, Otto was headed for the shower to warm up his core.

Dawdling
More and more often it was that Cami wasn’t there. She would stumble in covered in sand and dust, shedding her clothing and crawling into the shower. From there she’d collapse into bed and sleep as if she hadn’t for a very long time. Of course it wasn’t hard for Otto to catch her whimpering softly in her sleep, once in awhile waking up screaming and shouting. Cami hated those nights the most for she couldn’t pretend, then, that there was nothing wrong.
It was her little secret that she’d always inquire at the portal whether or not Otto and Maebe were currently on-island, the former more often than the latter. Maebe could be avoided simply because she still had not listened to their pleas to move in with them. Otto? If he was there there would be no escape from having to face what she was trying to deny: something was very, very wrong with her.
If Otto was there then she’d restock, re-gear, and head back out for another patrol. She was desperately trying to find something though nobody really knew what, and she wasn’t sure she did either. Knowing he’d been in Canada had allowed her a few days’ respite.
Hearing his voice float through the apartment Cami lifted her head from the pillow where she’d been idly scrolling through her phone, catching up on island gossip. Her heart soared at the sound of his voice and though she had been going out of her way to avoid him, Camille was beyond pleased to know he was home.
Hopping up out of bed she caught him halfway to the shower, throwing her arms around his frozen body, then yelping at the cold that hit her skin. “Otto! Goodness, where were you? Antarctica?”

Otto found himself grinning without thinking about it, feeling Cami attack him in a hug that felt so warm and comforting. He gave a soft chuckle, and kissed her cheek with his cold lips.
“Nah. Canada.” He responded, trying not to touch her too much with his cold hands. “The course is in the Northern wilderness… somewhere.” He had the details written down somewhere, but they were unimportant details. “Haven’ t seen you in a while. Guess we keep missin’ each other, huh?” He hadn’t avoided her, although when he came back to an empty apartment, he hadn’t been too disappointed. Knowing she and Maebe were busy made the guilt of not being around less heavy. As bad as it seemed, Otto enjoyed being alone.
However, he worried now and then of her continued nightmares that had always seemed to startle them both awake. Was it simply normal for her? Or was something terribly wrong?

Forced
Something was terribly, horribly wrong but there was nothing that could be done about it at this moment. Camille didn't realize how horribly wrong it was because she was wrapped up in it, in the middle of it. Otto didn't know enough about what it could possibly be to recognize the problem for what it was...yet.
Taking his cold hands in hers Cami rubbed vigorously in the way she'd been taught at her few winters in the Frozen North, trying to get some warmth into them. "Silly. I'm always missin' ya." Truth, though not quite what he'd asked, nor evidenced by how often she returned back to the island. These days she was hardly known or remembered but that seemed to be something she was okay with as long as there were two bright-eyed blondes happy to see her. Happy and whole.
Hands began unwinding his scarf from around Otto's neck as she kept talking on as if nothing was wrong, as if nothing had been wrong. Ever. "Been living in the desert. My tan lines are wicked ugly. Was gonna go right back out like last time but Kidana demanded I rest so...I'm home. And now you're home." Her smile widened, a bit too much, a bit forced. It wasn't that she wasn't happy. Not at all.
It was just that smiling, these days, was always a little forced.

Sure, she seemed off somehow, but Otto equated it to having not seen her in so long. He was sure it was just that. Her smile seemed different, but it was still hers. Still that adorable smile, those exotic eyes, and her obnoxious hair colour. His smile was always subtle, if not invisible unless one knew him well. He felt comfortable as she fussed over him. "The desert, huh? So that's why you're even hotter than usual." He drawled easily, unsure of how to ease her worries over awkward tan lines. "I'll be home for a while. The course is done, and I'm taking a break from winter wonderland."

The normal thing to do would have been to offer to take Otto into the desert with her to get him to warm up, maybe get him some tan (or sunburn) lines of his own. He had a decided knack for finding oases, she remembered, and Kidana agreed he would be useful to take along. So what was stopping her? Why didn't she want her best friend with her on her relentless hunt for...whatever it was she was hunting?
Laughing at his drawl she shook her head. "Naw, I just think it's because you're a popsicle, breda. Anyone's warm when you're a block of ice." Now she was fiddling with the fastenings of his jacket but it wasn't the kind of stripping a lover would do. It was more about care and assistance than getting Otto naked. She didn't plan on stripping him of his normal layer of clothing, just the extraneous others that kept him warm in the Canadian wilderness.
Before finishing undoing the buttons of his coat she turned her head to look behind her as if she heard something. For a moment she smiled at whatever it was before turning back to Otto without saying anything or doing anything else strange. "Guess I have to feed you too, eh?"

Otto patiently allowed her to undo his coat for him. However, he curiously let his gaze follow where she seemed to look and smile at nothing. His brows knit, uncertain what she had been looking at. Maybe it was a girl thing he didn't get. "That'd be sweet." He agreed with a hopeful tone. He did love getting fed good food. His own cooking had only evolved from butter on toast to a fried egg on toast. And that was fancy cooking for him. "But only if you ain't too tired."
