The scene would have been almost comical if it hadn't been for the way the lioness' claws burrowed up to her flesh in the hard, packed earth as she walked. Every step was somehow faster and more aggressive than the last. Somewhere in her furious journey she had lost her companion, the one who broke the news to her, but it wasn't as if Ruva cared. She had been betrayed and lied to by her own kin.
"IDRIS." She bellowed. Ruva preferred more methodical tactics of war, but at this moment she was too hurt to plot. "Come out here this instant you filthy whore." There was quite a gathering in the denning area, with all sorts of creatures peeping around to watch as the tanned lioness stood in the center of a great plot of land, seething.
"ISSA."
----
At first the sound that woke Issa from his mid-day nap had been one he had been having nightmares about for years. It sounded as if it were his mother, calling out his beloved's name, but that couldn't be true, since the two had never met.
Stretching, the curious lion padded away from the den to look outside. There was a big fuss, enough to draw his normally self-kept neighbors out into the frey. Mother? A hard knot formed in his gut as Issa looked back to the den. Maybe he should just stay...Sighing, he shook his head. For the sake of his mate he would be brave and face this problem head on.
He followed the crowd to find his mother calling out a challenge: to him. Maybe she hadn't been saying Idris' name at all?
"Mother? What are you doing? You're causing a scene."
Snarling, Ruva turned to see her son, as dumbstruck as always. "Never again will you call me mother, you snake."

Having gone to a nearby water hole for a break, Idris was contently lapping up a drink when she heard it in the distance. Instantly, her head rose and spun. Ruva? Oh, honestly! What did she want after so long? She was more than ready to ignore the call when Ruva's voice echoed out again. Idris' ears pinned back as she looked up again. Wait... That was coming from the direction of the den!
The old flame lit right up again as she sprang to her feet and ran. That wench better not step one dirty paw in her home!!
As she rounded a rock to reach the den, something twitched in the back of her mind at the sight of her mate and the female she hated most standing there, but she was too worked up to bother thinking on it. She darted over and slid to crouch in front of Issa, baring her teeth at Ruva. "Get away from my home, you miserable b***h!"

Standing his ground was difficult when Issa had been raised to follow his mother's words like they were law. Still, he didn't feel half as nervous as when his mate rushed in. Issa didn't know why the Gods felt the need for him to have such an opinionated mate after living with Ruva, but he could only hope they wouldn't get into a fight. There would be no way he could part them.
Then the questions hit him. Was was Idris being so antagonistic? Usually she'd have a sharp word or two, but he had never seen her this worked up. Perhaps she had met his mother before?
-----
Ruva could barely control herself when that b***h stood before her son. As if she hadn't been insulted enough today, the sight of them together was enough to make her gag. "I'll get away from your home the moment you get your grubby paws away from my son!"
Her gums pulled away from her fangs as she all, but roared at Idris. Turning to Issa, she snapped, "How could you? Out of all the indignities I have had to suffer since I carried you-" Ruva cut herself off to seeth. She bit into her lower lip, her petite body puffing up in rage.
------
"What the hell are you talking about?" To say Asili'issa was confused would have been an understatement. He felt terrified and lost, so very lost, because of something he didn't understand that he apparently did to slight his mother. "Do you two know each other?"

Her fur stood on end, angry that she had to see that ugly face again. And the dumb thing was challenging her on her own turf! "As if I would ever-!" Like a light switch, her furious expression turned into one of shock. ....Son? Still crouched down, her head swiveled around to look back at Issa. Her beloved, precious Issa... looked almost exactly like Ruva.
Oh... gods.... It couldn't be true...
Now, Idris was the one feeling sick. It all hit her at once. How had she not noticed? It was so obvious, now that the two were standing so close together. From nose to tail... How had someone as wonderful as Issa come from garbage like Ruva?
This was a perfect opportunity! She could rub this insult right into Ruva's smarmy little face! Tell that stuck-up snob how Issa had chosen her! But... she was sick. She was angry. She was confused. She was... hurt. It all blended to feed her rage, which she turned back to Ruva with, ignoring her mate's questions as her claws dug into the ground. "I don't give a s**t what you are to Issa. Get away from my home before I tear you apart."

Ruva's pride was slightly assuaged when she saw the look of shock on Idris' face. Only slightly. She too turned to look at her son with the hurt of betrayal still burning like cold fire in her heart. Did he truly not know what he had done? That through his selfish act of trying to hide from his mother that he had done the unthinkable?
Issa couldn't stand the way Idris was looking at him. His brow furrowed as he struggled for words; something, anything to take that look away from her. "Who...who is she to you?" He asked while looking to Idris, but addressed both lionesses as a whole. "I don't understand-"
"If you had bothered introducing us like any decent son would, you would know exactly who this b***h is." Ruva spat. "Is this some sort of game to you, Idris? First I take your brother, then you take my son?" She remembered the way they had started this war. Ruva had deceived Idris' brother into loving her, the jerk couldn't stand to have his affections taken from her and because of their fighting they had lost everything, including the well being of her lover.
"Stop calling her that!" Issa snarled at his mother. He didn't know what he expected Idris to do, but standing with him in the face of her own confusion wasn't it. "Mother, stand down. You're on our own territory, so you need to calm down....And Idris the same goes for you." His voice shook, but Issa stood firm. "She is my mother, and I don't want to see her maimed."
Stand down?! As if Ruva would do such a thing after such an injustice! She should go to the King right now and have the tramp tossed out on her fat a**.

She could hear the confusion thick in Issa's voice, and she felt a pang of guilt. He was innocent in this. He hadn't known... but anger washed over the guilt again, and she snarled at Ruva fiercely. "Game? You think this is a joke? The only joke here is you, you manipulative, selfish whore! How dare you bring my brother into this.." A friendship that had turned into battle and then this all out war... She couldn't even remember that time as a cub when they'd been friends. It had always been fighting. Always.
The moment Issa jumped to her defense, the guilt rose right back up, and dampened the raging hatred. And, with every syllable of 'mother' that passed from his maw, her stomach flipped and clenched and was clawed open. Ruva... was... Issa's... mother... "If she doesn't leave us alone, you just might have to turn around then so you don't see it, Issa," she growled in a low tone, the fire in her eyes locked on the other lioness still hoping that Ruva would burn...

"Oh that's rich, coming from you!" Ruva snarled. Her eyes were absolutely mad in their intensity, and for all appearances the lioness had gone feral. "You're insane to think it didn't start out there. You couldn't stand to see us happy, so you ruined it for everyone, you strumpet!" Whatever peace they had known as cubs had long since burned out. Hatred that burned as bright as the morning sun had seen to that.
"Idris, please." Issa could handle the verbal abuses being flung as easily as splashing water, but if it turned physical it would kill him. Or worse, them. The lost male turned one baleful look to each female, then again to the other. "Mother...Idris...Just...listen to me for a moment and if you really want to fight after then I won't be able to stop you." Taking a deep breath to steady himself, the male went on, "Like it or not, you two are now connected. Even if Idris and I split up, which we are not," a pointed look was tossed to Ruva when she had looked momentarily gleeful, "that doesn't change the fact that we still have cubs. Idris is the mother to your grandcubs, mother, so I expect the two of you to act like adults enough to recognize that this involves them too."
"Asili'issa, I will not blame the sins of the mother on the cubs." If anything could bring shame to Ruva it was the thought that her son might think she would harm her grandcubs out of spite. She was nothing if not a protective mother, and now that she knew of them, it traveled down to the little ones as well.
"...So you'll agree to never causing a scene like this again? For their sakes?"
"Sweet heart, if I get rid of her now, we won't have to worry about another scene ever again." Ruva's gaze locked with Idris', a low rumbling growl taking over her overly sweet tone.

She bared her teeth and snarled at Ruva, claws digging into the ground. How she wanted to tear out that b***h's throat... But, Issa... Issa kept defending her. Issa wasn't going to leave her...
It took effort to tear her gaze from her enemy, and turn it to the father of her cubs. Her mate. The guy she'd fallen in love with...
Her mind flew back through the years; to that fateful day. She and Ruva had been lock in a blind battle... her brother had tried to separate them, and then had saved them, and had been seriously injured in the process.
Now, she wanted to kill the wench, but... Issa... "I will not risk leading Issa to the same fate as Ikanna," she murmured, her expression going blank. What a horrible memory... and what a horrible thought. She couldn't risk Issa like that... She couldn't let Ruva risk Issa like that.

There was a tension in Asili'issa's stance that seemed frozen to the spot. He looked to Idris with a furrowed brow..."Ikanna?" ..then to his mother. Did he ever really know either female at all? There was so many little snippets that were finally connecting for him, but why had it taken this long for this to come to light?
"I loved him," Ruva snarled desperately. She exhaled slowly, and shook her head. Even to this day she could remember the glint in his eyes when he smiled...that little dimple on the right side of his mouth...If she could have torn Idris from her life then and there maybe she would still have him. But then she would never have had her cubs..."For once, I agree. I'm not risking my son's welfare because of his choice in den mate."
She looked to Issa, and found his eyes looking down to his paws. With all the hatred swirling around in her heart she hadn't been focused on him, or how this would settle with her son. "...I'm going back to work. We'll talk tomorrow, Issa. Alone." Passing one last heated look to Idris, Ruva forced herself to turn away from the couple and walk away.
He watched his mother go before turning to his mate. How could two lionesses he loved more than the air he breathed hate each other so much? The confusion was plain enough on his face as he spoke, "I'm...going to go help Waridi for a while. I'll see you this evening."
Issa turned away from Idris to go his own way. What he needed right now was time to think. To process. What have I done?

She held her breath until more space grew between Ruva and herself. Love... She would never believe it. Ikanna had been so much better than that little- Her gaze flicked over as Issa spoke, interrupting her thoughts. Issa... There was a lump in her throat that prevented her from speaking, body trembling slightly as Issa turned away, adrenaline and rushing emotions catching up to her.
She couldn't let this come between them. She couldn't! But.. Issa was a mirror image of Ruva... How was she supposed to get that out of her head?
Trying to swallow the lump that made it difficult to breathe, she shakily headed for the den. She needed to be there when Issa returned. ...She needed to explain it all...
Fin!
