Breeding
Q: Canonly, why can't Usdia and Fullsize ponies/ Two legged and Non-Aquatic four legged breed? And why are Mers and Kelpi/Seathi and Nixie capable but not the other breeds?A: The most likely reasoning, though soquili themselves wouldn't know it, is the breeds lack the proper DNA in their chromosomes to allow for safe breeding between most of the species. Because of this, even if they end up similar in size (the smallest a Soquili Soquili (the "Fullsized Land" soquili) can get outside of Shrinking as a Flutter is approximately 10 hands and the largest a healthy Usdia can be is also approximately10 hands), if the two are physical it will rarely ever take. And, if it does take, the child
never survives, and often ends up taking the mother with it when it turns toxic.
Because of this, soquili often find breeding between different soquili species to be taboo as it is a very sad and depressing thing to lose a child before it is born consistently, or even losing your beloved. Because of this, Pairs that cannot safely breed together are in many ways treated the same as same sex pairs, requiring them to seek out surrogates, adopt abandoned children, or wish to the wishing star. Unfortunately, this has caused some soquili to take aggressively to cross-race couples, or simply causes such pairings to be super rare or sometimes considered forbidden.
The only exception to this are Kelpie (for the full sized species) And Nixie (For the miniatures). Due to their aquatic heritage, they carry a chromosome that allows them to safely breed with the aquatic species of the same size-type as them. When Kelpie and Mers breed, there is no chance for them to have other breeds (Such as a child cannot throw back into a pure Kalona) but it does allow transfer of some traits into the mers (Such as feathers, horns, scales, etc) but they cannot gain traits such as wings. Mer offspring can still only breed with Kelpie out of the four legged breeds despite having other breeds mixed into their line. The same goes with Nixie and Seathi, though head winglets from breeds like Imps, Putti, and Pixie are capable of passing down.
