[Phoenix Themed]

Custom: Full
Character Name: Zandalar Keifuin
Race: Orderite
Gender: Male
Clan: N/A
Class: Mage
Appearance: Zan has fiery red hair, or rather, the reddish orange shade of a new copper penny. It shifts between red, yellow and oranges with the shifting of the light. His skin is a pale pink that makes him look like he's got a mild sunburn, that only darkens to a full out sunburned look when he blushes. His eyes are a vibrant royal purple with flecks of a brighter blue around the iris.

His wings are the same color scheme as his hair and he prefers clothing that leaves his shoulders bare. This is mainly corsets. He has a fondness for skirts, tights and arm warmers as well as anything that has a lot of buckles.

Personality:
+Dedicated: Sees tasks to completion, no matter how it would affect him or others around him. If he's been told to do something that he fully agreed upon, he will do it. His word is his own personal collar and binding contract. Though he always leaves himself an out, his morals and his honesty and his personal code of honor are the things that would break the contract. Killing in cold blood for example, goes against his moral fiber, and thus he wouldn't do it. Kidnapping, torture, misleading someone. Those things too would sit badly on his shoulders, and so he does his best to not get into situations that would cause him to break said word to begin with.

+Honest: Doesn't lie and hates those who do. The best way to get Zan to dislike you is for him to find out that he's been lied to. He doesn't do it, sees no point in it. Even if it's to spare someone from the painful truth, he wouldn't lie. Omitting certain parts maybe, but a flat out lie never. After all, it's not a lie if the other person convinces themselves of something you never said.

+Helpful: Willing to lend a hand, within reason of course. Zan is big on physical labor, despite his more mage-like tendencies.

-Temperamental: Easily angered, slow to cool down, and most often times his aggression and temper are converted into a need for physical exercise. The best way to calm him down when he gets worked up like this, is to work him hard. To exhaust him until he's numb and can't feel or think well at all.

-Snarky: Doesn't curb tongue when angry, miffed, or generally not happy. His tongue is as sharp as the blade he carries. It's a very personal defense system that he uses to get people to back off. Whenever it's deployed he doesn't care at all, how much he can hurt others, or how much trouble it'll cause him later. This trait is also triggered by his temper.

-Elusive: He never seems to be around when you need him. The urge to travel and see the world hits at odd times, and when it does he usually packs up and leaves within a few days of that first restless itch. Sometimes without warning, but never when he's got a task that's in the works. If anything that job will turn out sloppy, as he's driven to finish it in as little time as possible.

Biography/Background: Zandalar was raised in a hybrid village on the continent of Ayr, in the Great Peaks, that held a name that was far too long for him to pronounce or fully recall. To him it was simply 'Home'. There he's interacted with everything from pure-bloods to first generation hybrids, to those who are so mixed you couldn't tell what their forefathers were to begin with. Both of his siblings were of mixed blood, both are related to him through his father as his mother having died giving birth to him. He doesn't mourn that which he's never known, and the stories his father will sometimes tell is just that, a story. The day dreamer part of him wonders if life could ever really be the way his father paints it, while the realistic part of him knows it's true. Somewhere. In a land far away there are feather winged people of various hues, in a city that was built only for them.

Their lives seemed like that of a fairy tale, tinkerers and smiths and the urge to create just for the sake of creating. There was no struggle to survive, to hide, to stay safe and well. The dreamer and the realist often clashed on this point. To have lived a life in the city of clockwork creations, to have wanted for nothing, or to live as he did now; free, with a family that loved him despite the fact that his siblings only shared half of his traits. That the woman he called Mother had small, knife-like horns growing from her skull and white-blue dragon wings upon her back.

But what did he have to base anything off of? Bed time stories of a place that sounded both wonderful and terrible. To be with others who looked like him and his father sounded good, especially on days with his sibs were being bratty and he just couldn't connect with his mother. But on the other hand, to live in that world you had to have so much hate. To hate an entire race just because someone told you to. To sneer at another just because they were different. He'd be spitting on his mum, his little sister and brother, his friends, the village elder. He'd be kicking them down and desecrating the graves of the fallen.

He didn't want that. It hurt to even think that way.

He'd tasted love, unconditional love of family and friends, to blinding anger, fear, and sorrow. He's mourned the passing of those younger than him, and celebrated the coming of age ceremonies that others have gone through.

But he's always, always felt that there was something he was missing. Someone or something more that he was supposed to do, become, or see. It started to eat at him when his father finally allowed him to start formally training his magic, and to go on hunts with his peers and teachers. He knows what it is. A yearning to learn just who and what he was. To grow and spread his wings and see just how much change, chaos, he could cause in the turbulent world. To see if he could make things better, or only cause things to get worse. Because the world as it was now, was broken, and he hated it. He hated it so fiercely that it made him sick some days, and to think, he hadn't even fully stepped foot in it.

Thoughts on the Great Engagement: He feels like it's stupid. But it's the gods will that their creations fight and fight and fight and never grab victory because it's for the most part, two against each other with the third side free to split and aid either side. Or to simply wait it out and achieve victory by slaughtering the weakened winner. It's a genocidal mess and he wants no part in it, but because he enjoys living he has no real say on if he gets dragged into it or not. There's only so much space in the world and not everywhere is peace obtainable. After all, life is a war unto itself.

Thoughts on the Magescian Races: He has no real feelings towards any of the races as he takes everything he hears with a grain of salt. He was raised surrounded by all three races and their progeny. There's nothing that says each race is inherently evil, just like there's nothing forcing each to be truly good. There's always grey matter in between everything. But this doesn't mean he'd be overly wary or friendly towards any one person, group, or race. He meets them as individuals and will thus react to each one as an individual.

Thoughts on the Dragons and Khehora: He thinks they're okay. He personally hasn't met any in a non-hostile situation, which, truth be told, he has mostly always been the instigator. He's respectful of their power and their strengths, and has a personal code of honor when it comes to them. He doesn't fight the ones who look like they're nesting, or the ones that are really young. If they look sick or injured beyond healing he'll attack and view it more as a mercy killing than anything else.

The Khehora are more a mystery to him. He hasn't met any wild ones, only the tame pet-like toddlers that are bonded to others. He dislikes the bonded ones greatly, but never takes his disgust out on them. It wasn't their fault that they've been reduced to playing fetch like an obedient dog.

*pokes in cause she has way too much time on hands while at work trying to wake up* I'm not staff anymore so this is just feedback from a fellow rp-er!

Don't forget that Orderites in general have difficulty tanning due to their pastel shades! Also, feel free to make his skin non human toned! You can give him a pastel shade of something if you want :3 Just saying cause a lot of ords are human colored when they're actually supposed to be very colorful people XD Kadryn feels lonely being all blue....

Personality is very much a lovely one.. but there's nothing bad! Also: convicted does not mean what you described it as XD It means :declare (someone) to be guilty of a criminal offense by the verdict of a jury or the decision of a judge in a court of law."

I think you mean determined/persistent/dogged/honorable or something.

You might wanna add in something negative as no one is always sweet! Yeah he's snarky, but that's not a bad trait really. Temperamental is sorta negative, but it's so overwhelmed by al the positive traits it is hard to think of this guy as well rounded.

History is a bit flat. There's nothing really to define him. Tis fairly typical so you may want to spice it up and add at least one defining even that made him wish to go mage over others. Happy family, no bad things... come on.... ADD SOME FLAVOR!!!!!

Also, this hybrid village: give more details! The only hybrid villages (officially at least) are on Eowyn! Is that where he grew up? If you are going to make up a village; flesh it out a bit! Just saying "Oh it's a hybrid village yeah...." is very lazy. Why is there this hybrid village? And where is it? Location, details! Needs it.

Thoughts on others.... PLEASE NOOOOOOOOOOO. You have any idea how many people take this path? "My character likes everyone" :p Blah. I know I know.. he's raised in a hybrid village so he's a bit more open-minded... but would he actually be? If this hybrid village made it self out in the wilderness to get away from prosecution of full bloods (most likely) then wouldn't HE be the one looked down upon? Since his full blood kin have stepped upon the hybrids kind for so long? You may want to think about that.
He does have thoughts on others! Rumors shape your perception! Raised by an Ord da would he not see Oblivs (even just a lil bit) as far more dark and potentially evil that the Ords?

All in all fairly typical of a quest. Not a lot that makes him stand out in my mind, nothing makes him really jump out at me and say "I AM EPIC!" Try to spice him up a bit, add an event in his past to make him want to leave... why's he so eager to see what lies beyond the other hill if he's had this happy life so far? Balance his super sparkly positive attitude into something less perfect and sparkly. Your art shows tats.. Why does he have them at such a young age? (they're like.. 10-13 at Apprentice) Or are those later things?

Again: this is just a fellow RP-ers view crit. Things I saw may not be what the staff agree with. Also, this was typed early in morning so my brakes aren't on and you are getting unedited or filtered words.... apologies if they offend.

Yay, a male orderite! We are in severe need of those to balance the current gross gender discrepancy in that race.

On the subject of skin tone, I am with robo - we have so many orderites with human skin tones already. Dovaa are the race with human skin tones. Oblivionites and orderites ought to tend more towards "unnatural" (by our standards) colors. This doesn't seem to be a problem with oblivionites (other than the occasional brown one, which is fine, they are mostly non-human colored), but in particular people all seem to want human-toned orderites. This isn't to say that you have to change it; they can theoretically (obviously, due to precedent) have human skin tones...but personally I find it off-putting. Far more ords should have pastels of all different sorts, not human. (Pink, baby/sky blue, yellow, lavender, white, etc..) Feel free to get creative!

I disagree with robo in that snarky and temperamental don't qualify as negative traits; temperamental definitely does, and snarky (the way you describe it, at least), does. Wanderlust, however, I wouldn't say does - though, from the description you used, maybe "flighty" or "unreliable" or "whimsical/unpredictable" would fit? Either way, I think his personality is fairly balanced - not all positive, not all negative, though there is always room for expansion, it's enough for now to qualify (in that area) for my approval at least.

By "convicted" maybe you meant committed? Dedicated? Regardless, I catch your drift, so you're good there other than maybe some clarification or touch up at your discretion.

I would also second the need for information on where this "hybrid" village is located, though, and why he is there. I assume from context, it is due to his father's new choice in a mate being of a different race, but there is no explicit info on this. What race is the mother of his half-siblings? If he was with an orderite woman before, why did his father move to an area with hybrids with his newborn son? Most purebloods would find that extremely radical, dangerous, etc., and what of the connections he had with his family and his past mate? Who are these half-siblings of his? How does he feel about having no connection to/knowledge of his orderite family? (Or does he have connection/knowledge?) Lots of room for expansion there.

In general, what robo said about the "no feelings towards any of the races" thing being done far too much is true; however, your other character Elleth is not this way, so if you fill in his background more and give us a bit more depth of reasoning, and this simply is his logical opinion due to his personality and upbringing, then we can't fault you for it. Lots of other people have done this, so we can't draw a bright line boundary on you and suddenly say "no" out of the blue. (That would be entirely unfair, especially considering there are inevitably some outlier characters in the world even from a realistic perspective.)

I would like to be convinced, though! Convince me that he's not bitter about being separated from an entire half of his pureblood bloodline; convince me he doesn't feel like an outcast in a village of mostly hybrids, that growing up, the children (despite being children and very prone to such things) did not set him aside as "different" "not one of them" "an outsider" etc. for his pureblood status. Convince me, despite inevitably being exposed on some level to the inherent, entrenched racial prejudices and biases in the world any time he might have ever set foot outside of this village (and, almost certainly, in the village, to some extent), he walked away with a bird's eye view and developed a tabula rasa opinion on every new person to be filled in based entirely on their actions and not their race. It's entirely possible! But depth on why and how would be nice.

biggrin

This is why I asked for a crit so early. Hearing how others see my characters always helps me flesh them out way more, than if I did everything by myself.

-updates will be added after here-

Zan is 9 at the time of his profile creation, if/when he gets customed his first solo will be that of him turning 10 and officially being allowed to venture out on his own. The pic above is a future goal pic and probably won't turn out exactly like that.

-Changed skin and eye colors.
-Changed two personality trait names.
-Messed with his history.

Much better! Digging the basic looks and bio a lot more now and the personality makes more sense, terms wise. I notice opinions on races hasn't changed, but I think - taking into account that you already have one character who isn't super open-minded to everyone and given his upbringing - it works out. You can always build later, too, as you see fit.

You have my approval! (Officially.) Now you'll need one more from another staffer and you'll be good to go. =D

Point of curiosity again, though, to re-iterate one of the previous questions which went unanswered unless I missed it: Where is this hybrid village located? At least got to know what continent it's on. xD

Pfft, I forgot to add that in. They live in a small part of the Great Rocks on Ayr. It's a hard place to live but they're constantly adding to it and making it more hospitable. He's never been to Abban, or Taraho, or anywhere where there are a lot of people milling about.

Robo and Uke touched on all of the points that I saw yesterday when I first looked at this.
The skin color thing bothered me as well but I see that it's now a pale shade of pink, so that's fine, as opposed to a human skin tone which also would've been okay but you normally think of Dovaa's with that.
I do like that you added on to the history, and that he does sometimes have thoughts of going to see all the other orderites when he's having a bad day, going to live off in a place safe with clockwork and everything everywhere. It added to it a bit, before it was a bit small.
I'm still sort of curious about how his father ended up meeting and falling in love with the Dovaa woman who he calls his mother now, but it might not be entirely necessary for this post, maybe just in the journal somewhere if you get him.
As for his views on the other races, I think it's alright, a lot of characters are like that in the guild and it'd be nice if there were more that weren't, but Elleth already has some prejudice so I'm not gonna hold that against you. Something to think about though, he might have a little bit of negative bias towards Orderites or Dovaa, purebloods basically. Only reason I think so is because of their strict thoughts on hybrids, which is his family, he can't live in a place that's safe or full of life. Due to their views. It's something to think about, or at least maybe something he'd pull out when he gets snarky and loses control of his mouth for a bit. Just a thought.
I've gotta say it looks good though, and I approve of it now, if you think of some stuff feel free to add and ask for us to look at it again. o 3ob

Right now he lives a sheltered life, as far as being a pureblood in a hybrid village goes. His dad absorbs a lot of the spite towards him and is doing his best to shield him from the cutting remarks that the others make.

His bff is an obliv girl who is also a pureblood, but she was adopted by a hybrid dovaa/obliv and doesn't really act like a pureblood obliv would. The reason why he's not prejudiced against the others yet is because there's so few purebloods in the village who have that elitist attitude. A majority of them are there because they fell in love with someone from the wrong race. The ones who do have that attitude are there because they're either banned from returning to the capital cities, or they've done something that's made them known outcasts.

Zandalar himself doesn't really see the difference between the races, everything has sort of melted together at home. It's going to be a huge cultural shock when he gets out into the world.

I can see him developing a hatred towards a race when he realizes that yeah, that attitude there, it's shared between everyone. But right now, with his age and his location and how he was raised, none of that is really present.

He doesn't know why his Da is living where he's living right now, nor how he met his Mum. It's not a story that's been told in all it's gritty detail. As far as he knows he was born in the village and his Mum really is his mum, and the lady who birthed him was some faceless nice person. I have plans on his Da sitting him down and telling him the truth, which will then cause him to finally leave the village for (almost) good.

But it all really boils down to politics and arranged marriage and running away to find a unique kind of love.
