It wasn't exactly day three of being in the labs, not straight, but it was maybe day three of neglecting everything else about her life to finish up work on an engine. Maybe. Felicia went to her duties and came right back, bag dropped beside her chair as she booted up the machine again.

It wasn't the same has having internet-- it was terrible, she hated it, and hated that Dwight never shared more than a few things because he was a b*****d who totally had one over on her for this-- but it was at least fulfilling.

For a moment, Felicia embraced the monitor bodily with her lanky arms, and sighed.

"A-a-at least you underst-stand, computer."

The thump of the bag and the sudden sound of a voice startled Noah out of a doze, and he shot upright in his chair nearby and yelped "SorryIwasn'tsleepingI'mstillusingit." The fact that the computer he was sitting at displayed the idle logout screen suggested that he was, perhaps, not being 100% truthful.

Felicia squinted at the boy, and oh wasn't he a cutie and a half. "It's cuh-cuh-cool, I'm usin' t-this other one instead." She knocked on her station's monitor, not bothering to stop hanging off it.

"Whacha w-w-workin' on?" Felicia stuck out a hand, bony and thin. "Fuh-Fuh-Fuh-Felicia Shepherd."

Noah blinked the dazed drowsiness out of his eyes, processing that:

  • actually he wasn't being yelled at
  • this was another trainee who had come to use the computers
  • she seemed friendly, and
  • she was introducing herself and he should really find his manners somewhere.

"I was, I was looking up records and measurements on Insanity fog concentrations over time, like, the density and the, the correlation of shadowling population and other unusual Fear occurrences on island while the fog was present," he replied, and shook her hand distractedly. "Noah Andersen. Nice to meet you."

"Neat," she said, filing some of it away. It seemed boring to her, but Felicia was glad that someone gave a damn about the things she didn't. "What's Insanity F-f-f-fog?"

Boneless, she collapsed into her seat after shaking Noah's hand, and proceeded to slap her face a few times. Felicia entered in her credentials with one hand, and dug around in her bag for a pair of earbuds at the same time.

"P-p-pretty new still, and I g-gotta write it all down, or I forget. If it's n-not code, it just falls r-right out."

"It's a foglike substance produced by the corruption and breakdown of Fear," Noah explained, on steadier ground with factual information to share. "It can cause hallucinations and other mental effects, and affects living things that remain in it for long periods of time. See, there used to be a barrier around the island, and anytime Insanity fog was produced it got trapped inside the barrier, so the island was constantly covered with it in varying concentrations. So, my personal project is, I'm working on starting some sustainable agricultural resources we can use here, but that didn't used to be possible due to the fog, but the fog's gone now and I'm trying to figure out how much lasting effect it's had on the vegetation and the soil quality, so I need to compare Fear mutation effects and frequency rates from when the fog was present to potential mutations that may pop up in my experimental plots outside and the control plants indoors."

He ran out of breath and smiled hopefully at Felicia. "You're a programmer?"

Felicia began tapping at an alarming speed, the text full of shorthand and her own slang.

"Huh. K-k-keeping a garden's never been so tough, huh?" She smiled goofily, and pushed her huge glasses up her nose a bit. "S-still getting used to this suh-science beyond science, y'know?"

At the question, Felicia nodded like a bobblehead. "Y-yeah! S-self taught. M-made a few things, but, n-never liked the idea of w-working in a big corporate office, even if the p-p-perks of Palo Alto are impossible to beat." She brought up her prototype, and it wasn't anything fancy, and definitely full of placeholder programmer art. It was in first person, set up with QR codes. "Just some C++ s**t for m-m-my DK2 kit. W-wanna integrate codes to t-tag objects, f-for augmented reality."

"It's really interesting, though," Noah said earnestly. "I mean, yeah, it's hard, but I'm finding out so much new stuff and I get to do research on it, like actual research of my own besides what's been recorded which is not that much, so that's really exciting. Um. I mean. I think it's exciting," he finished, deflating suddenly.

"That's awesome." He craned his neck to get a look at her screen. "Augmented reality, is that like google glass? Sorry, I'm dumb about computers," he added sheepishly, giving her apologetic puppy eyes, because sometimes computer people got really offended about other people not knowing things.

"It is," Felicia said, encouraging, promptly reaching out to flick him in the shoulder. "D-don't b-be ashamed of p-p-progress."

She nodded again, hair bobbing. "I h-have a pair of those, but they're d-d-dead till I can pay to f-fix 'em. Or the Oc-Oc-Oculus Rift. G-goggles you wear that react to how you m-move your head. Once I g-get them back up and running, I w-wanna see if I can implement s-something with m-movement. Like, b-bodies."

"Not everyone finds plants exciting, I mean, I know I'm kind of weird," Noah said, apologetic, but he smiled, encouraged.

"Whoa, really? You actually have those?" His eyes went wide, impressed. "How hard do you think it's gonna be to get them converted to runic energy? I mean, are you gonna do it yourself? I've been practicing carving runes but I haven't really figured out much about them and it's not really my area but that's not, do you think that the change could be used to implement new function, since it's like, it has to do with intent, maybe that could help with sensing the relative positioning and tracking, I don't really know where I'm going with this," he finished, a little sheepishly.

Felicia snorted, undignified, and a bit like Miss Piggy. "Duh," she said, unbothered, "we're all ******** weirdos. It's the point. T-that's why we're so g-good at the one or t-two things we're good at. I c-could be well b-balanced if I put the effort into it, but I'd rather like... b-be myself. And if t-that means p-playing video games and loving c-code more than I do puh-people, then, ******** settled back down after her obviously well practised (she'd used it at least a few times on the girls) speech, grinning. "Imp-puh-possible. Nancy s-said months. G-gonna just suck it up and p-pay for them, one at a time. B-better that way, in c-case a new model comes out, y'know?" She punched Noah lightly in the shoulder. "T-that sounds cool. R-runic stuff blows my mind. All the s-s**t I learned about like, m-muh-machine languages just...don't apply. Or don't apply in the s-same way. I have to relearn it all."

Noah's eyes lit up with the encouragement, and his smile got brighter. "I think," he offered shyly, "I think everyone's weird, even normal people, I mean, like they don't want to say they're weird, but everyone has some kind of weird, it's just if you're gonna admit it? Right?"

His fingers smoothed across the keyboard without typing, a gentle, affectionate caress. "You have to relearn things all the time, right? I mean, even when you know them? It's like, it's like, going from hard to expert on a game. You know how to do it already but you have to learn a whole new set of moves to do the next part because it's harder and you need to know how to do different things, it's not like what you knew was wrong, not for the way you knew how to do it, but when you go up to the next level you figure out how to do what you did and then some other things too. It's not wrong but it wasn't everything you could do, like, there's still things you can learn how to do even though you're already good."

Rather than offering him a verbal reply, Felicia simply held her hand out for a fistbump, a lopsided grin on her scarred face.

"D-doesn't make it any more appealing, though," she returned, face scrunching up. "If I g-g-get to a real h-hard level, you wanna know what I do?"

Felicia leaned forward, conspiratorial. "I ******** boot up c-cheat engine and f-find the addresses to bypass the ******** level!" She bust a gut laughing, amused at her own admission. "I g-get what you're s-saying though. Procedural, inc-cuh-cuh-cremental learning. B-bit by bit. It just s-sucks to go from, like, g-godmode to a scrub l-level one again. S'all."

Noah fistbumped obligingly and did the blow-it-up gesture, his bright, shy grin intensifying. He giggled unashamedly at her admission. "You're multiclassing," he pointed out. "You're not level one everything, you're just, like, adding a knowledge base. You're godmode on sh-s**t you know, it's just, like. Okay, you were a rogue? Right? You're a great rogue, nobody's gonna say no to that, just now you're adding priest, it's totally different, like, complementary sure! But you have s**t to learn, right, when you get better you're gonna be the s**t but you gotta level up first?"

He beamed at her, a little shy but pleased to have the connection they seemed to share. "What's your favorite game?" he asked.

Bless this kid's soul, forever and ever, amen. "I knoww, I knowww," she whined, kicking her feet a little in her chair, the soles of her shoes scuffing against the linoleum. "B-but I hate leveling," she gave Noah a long, puppy-dog stare. "I always j-j-just bought powerleveling, t-t-to be honest. The endgame is the fun p-p-p-part!"

And then Felicia leaned back, aghast. "N-n-nooo, don't make me p-puh-puh-pick! B-B-Before I left I was all about B-B-Borderlands 2. B-b-but I made like, t-ten grand off Diablo 3, so there's that. I f-f-f-financed s-so much s-s-s-stuff with that s**t. Also C-cookie clicker. And--"

Don't Starve, Day Z, Minecraft, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 3 even with its ending, not DotA but she admired the work Valve did with it, LoL, not the Telltale Games that's for sure only because it was on rails-y, also ******** the Last of Us for that same reason, Rogue Legacy, Cave Story the perfect platformer game for beginners and she's too twitchy to be Super Meatboy, and.

On, and on, and on, until he'd interrupt, or she'd run out of breath. It had to happen eventually, right?

Right?
