Days were quiet around the base of Thunderbird Mountain, but Sequoyah wouldn't have it any other way. He knew some of the younger members of their small, informal herd were restless; hoping for some kind of excitement or drama to perk up their lives. Siebel especially seemed adventurous and hungry for life, while most of the others, like Mirari, seemed content.

Despite his brutish and demonic appearance, Sumi-e was a patient, quiet, strong stallion. It was his solemn duty to protect The Valley Herd from any danger, something he was sell suited to do. While he was a gentle stallion at heart, he had a fiery, nightmarish lineage, something that shone through with his fearsome appearance. He was an intimidating figure; the only of the Valley Herd who had such mutant qualities. Perhaps this made him the black sheep of the family, but he could handle it. It made it a bit easier to protect the Herd; he was very equipped for intimidation; even if he barely had to actually use his strength.

He patrolled the outside of the territory, usually alone. But today his daughter, Calligraphy, was by his side.

Vasile came and went from the cozy (and sometimes boring) little valley that he called home. He was related to virtually all the other Soquili that hung around, so he would go out to socialize and to, as they say, sew his wild oats. Of course, that got the better of him once when he found out he had baskets with a pretty little mare named Bella Lillian.

Though he was happy they decided to part ways; he wasn't ready to settle down, but he did take one of the baskets home with him and that's where his beautiful daughter, Siebel came from. The two of them were lounging int he valley that afternoon, Vasile listening to the stories she told about the mares she had met in her 'adventures' around the meadow.

Louvre definitely fell into the camp of 'bored' with his little valley herd. I mean, he loved his family and all but honestly nothing ever happened here. They were like some kind of hippie commune or something - and if he ever breathed any kind of irritation with that, his aunts and uncles were quick to berate him for thinking that way. They pointed out to him how lucky he should feel to have such a loving and supportive and worry-free home.

He knew they were right. But he just couldn't help it. He wanted something to happen - anything - the shake things up a bit.

Versailles was laying in the meadow with his lifemate, Dahlia, by his side. He was sort of surprised to be here, now, with her. They had first met when they were both so long, and so stupid. There was a whirlwind romance, and he was long gone before he ever realized she was heavy with foals. He had wandered around the lands, never realizing Dahlia never got over him.

He never really got over her, either. Which is why he finally came home and for once in his life, decided to stay,

(Wicahpi)

The young stallion was milling about the meadow, munching on grass and watching the blue skies. Wicahpi would never claim to be prophetic by any means, but there was something off in the sky today. Something that gave him unease. Perhaps it was the smell on the wind - something unfamiliar. Or perhaps it was the fact that birds seemed to be migrating. He wasn't even four seasons old, so he was not any kind of bird migration expert of course.

It wasn't anything to give him much concern... yet. But he ruffled his wing feathers and looked towards his mother. "Does anything in the wind seem off to you?" he asked.

Though she didn't carry him in his belly, Amitorlin considered Wicahpi just as much of a son as if she had. Though The Star had granted Sequoyah and Xandir a basket in the past - and of course she welcomed and loved Mirari just as much being Sequoyah's son - the fact that Wicahpi was obviously a gift for the three of them swelled her heart with so much joy and pride she found it overwhelming sometimes.

At her son's question, she lifted her head to the wind and took a long inhale. "I've never been very perceptive of these kind of things," she admitted.

Dahlia was happy in the meadow - watching the other members of her small herd, snuggled up to the handsome Versailles. She still couldn't believe he was here, again, with her. Supposedly forever this time, at least that it what he had promised.

Dahlia had had her broken twice in her short life. To have Versailles come back to her was a dream. She hoped she would have more foals soon, but of course you can't bank on these things.

She saw Amitorlin and Wicahpi speaking nearby, and her ears perked curiously.

Calligraphy walked by her father's side, her light footsteps leaving trails on the green grass. She was the only other 'different' one in her herd - something the others usually referred to as mutants. It didn't bother her all that much, she wasn't fearsome looking, just different. Her mane and tail were always wet and slick with ink, and he left inked footprints where ever she stepped. Little butterflies and dragonflies would come off her coat, flutter for a bit, then return.

Though she was also picking up on the sense of unease growing over the herd. She looked to her father than up to the sky, her eyes narrowing.

Candy happily munched on the grass of the valley, her friend, Mirari, beside her. The grass was dry and made her throat hurt, but they hadn't had rains in so long she knew she was lucky to have anything to eat at all. Sometimes Candy Striper would go outside the herd - learn about herbs and medicine - and she knew what kind of dire straights the rest of the Kawani lands were in.

"How long do you think this drought is going to last?" she asked Mirari.

Mirari walked beside Candy; the hyper-yet-cheerful healer who had joined their herd as an adult. She had known her since she was very little, and they had become great friends. She never really complained about the dry grass or the drought, but she did have to admit she was missing the rain something fierce. She missed the summer berries and the sweet, sweet apples that grew in the fall. She ruffled her feathers with a sigh when Candy asked her a question. "I have no idea," she said, looking up into the sky. "Hopefully not that much longer. It can't last forever, right?"

Siebel closed her eyes and let the dry hair flow through her feathers as she made large, lazy circles above the Valley Herd lands. The air made her feathers crackle with static electricity sometimes, and the dry air in her lungs was getting uncomfortable. She hoped this silly drought would be over soon. But then - in the distance something caught her eye. Was that a thundercloud?

Her heart swelled, but then her eyes narrowed. Something was wrong? Was that smoke? She blinked, immediately wondering if she should let someone know. She looked around, seeing Xandir not too far off. "Xandir!" she called. "Is something happening on Thunderbird Mountain?"

Xandir flew over to Siebel and followed her gaze. She was right, there was a certain licking of orange beginning to be seen on the mountain above, and clouds of big, thick smoke rising above the trees. "Something's not right," he agreed, and immediately went off to find Sequoyah.

"Sequoyah!" he called to his lifemate. "There's something going on on Thunderbird Mountain!"

Immediately, Sequoyah's body went rigid and his ears went up. "What do you mean?" He followed Xandir and Siebel's gaze up to the mountain. "Is that... fire?!" Fear gripped his heart as he looked up the treacherous mountain. "I have to go warn them!"

"Sumi-e!" he called, taking to his hooves. "There's a fire on Thunderbird mountain. Something is happening, we have to go help."

Sumi-e's six eyes narrowed as he heard his herd leader call for him. He gave a glance to his daughter beside him and gave a snort - he was a stallion of few words - but it was enough to show her that he hated to leave her side but he was needed elsewhere. Nodding his head he turned on his hooves and trotted in Sequoyah's direction.

He looked up at the mountain in response to Sequoyah's scared cries, and his eyes widened. He looked at his friend and gave him a resolute nod - though they were not part of the Thunderbird Herd, and things had been distant as of late - he knew how important that herd was to their foundation. Sequoyah, Xandir, and Sumi-e all had family that stilled lived with them up there, and he would not abandon them in a time of need.
