Far Far away, in the Kingdom of Mar, there was a Prince named Adolamin. His father the king passed away for unknown and quite mysterious reasons and his mother had died years before, leaving him sole heir to the land. Crowned and anointed, it soon became clear that he was not the same benevolent ruler as his predecessor.

However, this is not his story, but of a young woman who lives in Mar's Eastern province, Finwe. It is a rich land, with mild winters and long summers. The hub of trade and travel from lands across the sea to the rest of Mar.

The people ride with the banner of a blue dragon encircled in a ring of fire, the symbol of the house.

"My lady wake up, today's the day!" A sing song voice called from beyond her door as the young woman rose from her bed. Knocking came after, as if the voice wasn't enough to wake her.

Amettria wasn't the most difficult person to wake, but it always took her a moment to get her surrounding. She yawned and stretched, "Come on in Ms. Mint." As she pulled the covers off her lady in waiting entered her room. Mint was several years older, but had always been a big sister to Amettria. They got along well, and Amettria tried to treat her well. In exchange for her services Mint has received an education along side Amettria.

"Do you think the rumors are all true?"

"Oh yes, my lady. I'm sure the new king is just as handsome as they say. I'm just know he'll ask you to be his bride."

Amettria looked out her window towards the village. She wasn't talking about the new kings appearance, but the circumstances of the last king's death. Just day before had her and her father prepared to meet the King and his son. Her father had left her alone to oversee the town during the funeral.

"Now let's get you dress, I was thinking the blue one, but the pink one your father bought you would make your eyes just sparkle!" Mint would go on and on about her dresses for hours.

"I'll take my usual dress please. Their is no use dressing up for him. He's going to pick whom ever he likes. Don't forget, you also get a chance to impress him, Mint." Turning her attention to the other woman she smiled and stepped to her wardrobe. "The King won't arrive until this afternoon. I'd like to take a walk before the events. Father will be busy, and it would be easier to stay out of what's left of his hair if I'm not here."

Getting ready showed no difficulties in particular. Mint tried very hard to bribe her into a different dress, but Amettria refused to budge. She finished her outfit with the silk flower her mother had given her as a child.

"You look beautiful my lady. Please just one spin." Amettria playfully rolled her eyes before spinning around for her maid. It wasn't a ball gown, but it was much nicer than the clothes the other girls in the village wore.

"If my father asks for me, tell him I'll be back in time for the King." Grabbing her basket she gave a wave to her friend before quickly exiting the room. She had to hurry if she was going to make it back in time. Sneaking through the kitchen she grabbed a breakfast to take with her and headed out.

The town was a frenzy of activity, ever since the announcement of the king's arrival a fortnight before. Preparations were being made for every form of comfort and entertainment during his stay. Rumor had it that, having come of age and being recently crowned, the new King of Mar was in search of his queen. It was only right, as custom dictated, that the queen come from noble birth.

The house of Finwe was one of the oldest and richest of the kingdom, so it made perfect sense that the Kings' welcome tour begin here. He was to travel to all six of the regions to receive fealty pledges of his subjects, recruit knights for his royal guard and hopefully find a suitable lady to wed.

However, as Finwe was the wealthiest and most developed of the regions, so it was also one of the oldest, with many strange traditions that were dated as far back as pre Mar era, over three thousand years ago. Back when dragons and trolls roamed the hills and stole children in the night. Many people still left out offerings of cheese and mead to discourage the beasts from entering the homes, or destroying the town in search of food.

Graff liked to think he had a bit more dignity than to steal babes from their beds to fill his gullet, but he knew that their fear wasn't entirely unfounded. Some of his cousins, even now, were prone to partake from time to time when pickings were slim.

But not here, and not now. This was his territory and none of his kin dare try to contend his claim. He had made a promise, long ago. To protect this region and the house of Finwe.

The sound of the festive preparations could be heard for many a mile as farmers and ranchers brought product from their farms to be traded and made into fine foods. Musicians traveled the main road, practicing their lilting lyrics and tuning their instruments in the hopes of becoming infamous.

Unperturbed by all the noise, which although muffled, still could be heard in his dense forest, Graff listened to the animals and all the surrounding life while he gazed into a clear pool of water.

He had not moved for several months now, moss and vines having grown over most of his body, which was camouflaged to look like boulders anyway, so none were the wiser. Very few visited his wood these days, what with all the industry and trade. A fact that made his days blend in a soft current of peace.

However, there was one visitor that kept disturbing his frequent skrying. Not that he minded, the company was always welcome. As the thought of the young Finwe maiden entered his mind, Graff could see her image on the pool's surface. He indulged in watching her until a bird flitted across the surface, rippling the waters and muddying the image. Taking a deep breath, he puffed the bird away and cleared the ripples of the girl, twirling in a fine dress.

The young woman danced around the forest with a smile on her face. She was never one for singing, she just couldn't put her feelings into words sometimes. Dancing though, she could just spin and twirl around leaving a drop of her feelings every where she goes.

Amettria probably had the biggest room of all the girls in their town. To her it still wasn't big enough, not when she could be out here dancing. The way the wind blew against her face, and the feelings of the ground beneath her feet. She could never get enough of the forest.

Gracefully collapsing on the edge of the water she placed took out her breakfast and a little craft. It was small flat dead piece of wood with what looked like a small stump of candle.

"Mother please watch over me today, I don't trust the new king. So many things have changed since his ruling began." She took a stone and a match from her basket and lit the candle. Pushing the tiny barge in the water she watched it float through the lake.

"Dear friend, please watch over us. I know your there, you just have to be. Mother can only look out for me, but you are mighty and strong. I know you'll protect Father and I!" In her enthusiasm she quickly stood looking over the water. Her eyes light with passion she turned from the water and began dancing again.

In her heart she was trying to summon the strength of her family's guardian. It didn't matter if it was a story of legend, and that dragons were unheard of. Though she wouldn't dare speak of such foolish in front of company. Even though Mint would listen to her tale tells when she was in the mood to speak to such lengths.

She was a passionate girl, wanting to dance all night and day until her feet were numb. Amettria prayed the king would show no interest in her, she simply saw herself to young of the mind and heart to marry. Wanting to at least know whom she to marry, and if he was an honest man.

Standing still for a moment she thought about her future husband, and indulged in what she'd want him to be. Curtsying before him she smiled and took his hands and let him lead her out in a dance. Her fate would be known soon, but for this moment she could dance with her dreams. Fear couldn't smother her passion, instead it helped it burn pushing her forward in her dance.

Graff watched the vibrant creature as she flitted about his wood, springing lightly from sunny patch to mossy stone to fern covered soil in quick fluid motions. It appeared almost otherworldly compared to the dances of the local townsfolk. It was enough to make him open one eye to see her directly rather than through the film of his outer lens. It pleased him to see such spryly behavior in the middle of his enchanted forest.

When she collapsed near his pool, Graff sealed his nostrils so that she may be unaware of his breath. He did not mind when she lit a candle and placed it atop a piece of wood to set afloat on his waters. Very few remembered the ancient traditions of paying homage to the dead and honoring the guardians with elements of life. And dragons were especially akin to accept gifts of flame, as a sign of fealty and respect.

After saying her prayer, she resumed her dancing. Graff watched as she began to move as if she had a partner in her dance. It would have been picturesque if she were to have a partner, but he resisted the urge. The time was not right.

"Youngest of the house Finwe, do not fret," he replied, his voice deep and guttural as it filled the grove and caused the water to ripple. It had been long since he spoke, but he was pleased that his tongue could wrap around the speech of man as fluently as ever

"So long as your heart is pure and your courage unfailing, I shall never leave you unguarded." A rush of wind ran through the trees, tossing the branches and kicking up leaves. Only for a moment could he be seen, the spears of sunlight cutting through the shadows that prevented his discernment before his magic settled and camouflaged him once more.

Amettria froze in her position as the voice filled the forest. As the echo fades she looked around, moving closer to the edge of the water. Her arms stayed by her sides as she looked around. Unsure if she had made up the voice or if it had actually happened.

"Guardian?....my dear friend?" She asked in a soft voice as the wind picked up again. It pulled her towards the waters edge, like a flame she followed. Standing just on the edge of the water, if she treaded nearer her flame would be extinguished.

It wasn't her first time hearing the voice. It was the same one that often gave her choirs to complete. Something she had that done since she was a small child. She had never met this voice, but it was one that always brought her back to the forest. No one knew she was actually the one completing the choirs, delivering the flowers to expecting mothers, making wreaths for newly wed, placing herbs in the bags of those expecting to travel. She often went unnoticed because she was the daughter of the Duke.

"I'll do my best, but...." Her voice trailed off and she took a small step away from the water. Hesitation and uncertainty threatened her. "What if he's the horrible man they say him to be, what if he wish me to be his bride. How can I marry a man like him." She took a step forward, now on the edge of the water. The water and the fire could meet but never touch. She would miss her life here, as crazy as it was.

Amettria had no prof and of the things that she was told were real. She had never doubted the voice that spoke to her, having only told her mother long ago. She had encouraged her to keep with her visits and her choirs, and Amettria was certain helped mold her into the woman she was today.

The dragon was pleased as the young girl looked towards him, unknowing that her instincts were sharper than she could currently comprehend. It was one of the reasons he had reached out to her, assigning her seemingly mundane tasks while keeping close tabs on her as she grew.

He let his eye drift closed again as she voiced her fears of a king that she was right to be wary of. Whispers from the west, beyond his territories, cried of a new power cloaked in darkness. Graff could not be certain that they meant the newly crowned Adolamin, but nor was he fool enough to disregard it.

"You are a child of Finwe. My vassal. He shall not have you, for your place is here," he stated in calm tones, his voice floating on the breeze that had calmed, a few groaning trees settling in their beds.

He knew that his words were very close to a promise, which he had told himself to never make again with man. However, keeping in mind that by letting this most delicate of treasures be devoured by this potential theat he would be breaking that vow made ages passed, his word as a dragon would suffer greatly. And dragons take their words very seriously.

It also was no guarantee, because as a part of a kingdom, Finwe was bound by oaths made in fealty to kings. Amettria would have no choice but to go with her king, should he ask it, because her father would be seen as a trader and disloyal if he or anyone of his house prevented it. And Finwe could not withstand the might of Mar's other provinces banded together.

However, he did not break her spirit by telling her this. Likely she already knew, or had been told by the rest of her people. Nobles often kept their children schooled in the politics of their lands and the dealings of the king's court. That aside, he hoped that his words would steel her with enough confidence to survive such an ordeal, or otherwise be unfounded should the king prove a righteous man.

"Look for a sapling nestled in stone. In its hanging roots, a gift in case your courage fails," he instructed. Little did she know, the stone was actually his massive clawed foreleg. A sapling had taken root between his scales, cascading its roots down in its effort to reach the earth. In its hurry for life, the sapling had managed to chip part of one of his scales. It looked like a stone the size of a grape, but it would glimmer in shades of green and red when in the light.

Bringing her hands to her chest she listened closely to her instructions. Her eyes wide with wonder as the voice spoke to her. She didn't know anything about her guardian, but she would always do what they asked of her.

Followed the water's edge she searched for the sapling. Upon reach the cliff she spotted it and careful climbed up a few rocks. It wasn't her most difficult challenge, but she hadn't dressed for a task. Reaching high, she searched for her gift. Her hand brushed something smooth, but just out of her reach.

"Oh, I should have listened to Mint and worn those higher heels today!" She whined as she reached just a little higher. Steadying herself she jumped up and reached the stone. Landing back on her perch Amettria didn't notice how slick the rocks were and promptly began sliding into the water.

Gasping, she threw her arms up in an attempt to cover herself.

Graff watched the young lass make her way around his pool until she disappeared behind his shoulder. It was then he began to feel her, scrambling to reach the sapling. It would have been easier, had she gone the other way round, but he believed in letting lessons be learned.

However, when she lost her grip and began falling towards the water, he knew the lesson had ended. What good would his gift be, if she was hurt in its retrieval.

"Even the most nimble need beware, the treacherous path," he murmured while lifting his moss covered forearm. To Amettria, is may have looked like a mossy outcropping suddenly appeared above the water, preventing her from getting wet as she landed. The stoney gem was dislodged from the roots and rolled across the moss to land at her feet.

In the distance, the sounds of trumpets signaled the coming of nobility. The dragon knew it meant the king had arrived.
PostPosted: Sat Nov 29, 2014 10:52 am

Feeling a soft landing instead of the cold water Amettria opened her eyes and looked around. At her feet was her gift. Holding it into the light she watched it glitter.

"Thank you." She said in a small quiet voice, lost in the beauty of the stone. Sure she had plenty of gems at home. Pretty necklaces and broaches, gifts from her father and other royals around their kingdom. One or two from would be suitors, but she clearly never wore those.

Hearing the trumpets she realized she was out of time. Quickly standing she rushed to grab her basket. Taking one last look, she tried not to think of the fact this might be the last time she'd ever she her forest.

"Good-bye my dear friend. I hope our paths meet again someday." Holding her present tightly in her hand she turn and began running home. It was all she could do to keep from panicking. After all she couldn't run away, she knew better than that. If the King wanted her as his bride, then she would have to accept.

Amettria prayed that the King would chose a girl that wanted to be married. She herself felt to young to the world to settle down. There were plenty of girls that would rather have a hang in marriage. Yes, he'd choose one of those girl instead. It only seemed logical, and that did the trick on calming her nerves just a little.

Sneaking in the back door she silently made her way to her room where Mint was waiting. Together they freshened up and continued down to the ceremony. Keeping the stone in her front pocket for safe keeping, she wished she had more time to run it by the blacksmith for him to make a brooch out of it.

"Our paths are forever entwined, dear one," his voice a mere whisper in her heart. Graff was pleased at Amettria's admiration of the gift, sure that she saw it more precious than any other she had received. And truly it was. Only a handful of mortals held a token from a dragon that did not come at the cost of battle.

The dragon sighed when the girl then whisked away to her home to prepare her meeting with the king. Although she was no longer near, she was never truly out of his sight. Alone once more, aside from the life of the forest around him, Graff returned his arm to its original position and looked over the waters' surface to the candle left burning. The flame flickered and swayed in the breeze, then grew in the silence before being snuffed out by his breath. He watched the curl of smoke rise and dissipate before returning to his skrying.

Inside the castle proper, all manner of activity was moving at double the pace as messengers reported that the king's caravan was spotted only a league away. He would be arriving before midday. Servants hustled in their cleanings, stoking fires and preparing the meals, folding the bedding and supplying each room with a clean chamber pot.

Duke Joren, Amettria's father, was found in his chambers, getting the last few tassels and fastenings adjusted on his most respected of attire. He was a man of business and culture, poised and refined, royal and noble. A man that was a fine representation of the steadfast image of Finwe. Even if he was past his prime and pushing near fifty. The duke was a proud leader, and looked after his family and bannermen fiercely. Everyone in the region loved him and his family. He managed to maintain relations with the seafaring folk that his forefathers had ordained, bringing prosperity and safety to his lands.

"Bring my daughter to me," he commanded when he was presentable, eyeing the page that scurried off with his order. He needed to have a word with her before their majesty was to make his grand entrance.

"Amettria, your father has requested your presence."

The knock at her door came with a voice. It was time, and she could feel her hands shaking. Mint retied her back bow before putting the final pins in her hair.

"Oh if only Lady Finwe could see you know, my lady." Mint gasped, and stared in awe at Amettria. Truthfully that was the last thing she wanted to hear. If she could go roll around in the mud a few times she would. Anything to detour the King from picking her.

"Take me to my father please." She managed to say with fading confidence. Pulling every second of her home in, fearing she'd never see any of this again. They paused in front of the painting of her mother. Making sure to burn the image into her very being. They reached her father's chambers, and she quickly stood to present herself formally. Today was not the day to be caught off guard, everything had to be perfect.

"You wished to see me father?" Her hands held in front of her with her shoulders back and her head held high. The page bowed before taking his leave. Amettria felt her hands shaking, her white gloves doing their best to hide the face. Holding them tighter she could fake confidence. Though she doubted she could fake anything to her father.

"Ah, there you are," he replied, looking up from the raven whose leg he had been tying a message to. Letting the bird take flight out the open window, he smiled, taking in her fine dress and expertly designed hair. His child, his most precious gift from the gods. Joren could see so much of his beloved in her, even down to the smear of dirt that somehow got missed on her nose.

"My dear Amettria. You are aware that when the king arrives there will be many festivities placed in his honor, yes? I do not need to remind you to keep out of the north and east wings. For while here, our guests will demand a certain level of privacy and peace." The Duke paused and looked knowingly at his daughter, a twinkle of amusement in his eyes. She had quite the reputation for wandering off and showing up in unexpected places.

"So try to keep your adventures to the west wing and the main halls." It was well known that he had a soft spot for his only child. Many chalked it up as being devoted to her happiness, while others thought her a little spoiled for having the freedoms of her station and no siblings to keep her in check. However, no one could contest that he loved his daughter and would do anything for her, should she ask.

His smile broadened when he noticed her nervous gestures. Moving across the room in long strides, he scooped Amettria up into his arms and squeezed her in a bear hug.

"No time for gloomy faces sunflower," he chided. "Not when we have a party to attend."
PostPosted: Mon Dec 22, 2014 12:12 am

Amettria listened to her father a small smile grew as he warn her of wandering off. Her best adventures did always start that way, but he need not warn her to stay away from their King. She only prayed that their new ruler was keep away from her as well.

Hugging her father brought back some of her light. He wouldn't let anything bad happen to her. Even if he could not watch over her forever, Amettria knew there would always be someone on her side.

"Is it alright if I wear Mother's brooch? I'm afraid it's too much, but Mint told me I shouldn't dress lightly for our guests. I'm wouldn't want to offend them either way."

She like dressing her best, but she was never quiet sure how much or little to wear. Mint had always stepped in to take care of such things, but today Amettria didn't want to stand out. Even with her new token she was afraid. Monsters take many forms, and she could only pray that their King has no bad intentions.

Yes, that would make a find story to tell the faries. It made her smile thinking of all her friends in the forest. Knowing that they were waiting for her to come back tomorrow with wonderful tales about the new King. It was always more fun to exaggerate the truth. They would always change the facts into some mystical nonsense anyway.

((It's late and I can't sleep))
