The purple cub was hiding in some bushes listening to some adults talk. Since being allowed out of the den on his own Boinedal had made a habit of lurking in the shadows of the pride to hear what was going on. His parents weren't the type to talk about stuff going on they very much kept there noses only in what immediately effected them.
However Boinedal was starting to learn more about the pride's political situation. He was a young cub still so he didn't have a very good understanding of what it all meant or the ramifications of things being said, but he did know that he liked to hear more and wanted to learn all he could.
Tonight he had heard all sorts of tidbits he only wished he had someone he could talk to about it all.

It had been a long night. Manyara lay stretched out in the common area. She was physically tired, but not ready to head to bed. Instead she lay relaxing and listening. Some of what she heard did not please her, but it wasn't her place to tell others what to think. She sighed and moved to rest her head on her paws. Her ears twitched as she caught pieces of conversation.
Nothing really interested her into getting up and joining a group. It was probably going to be another solitary night. She wished her mother was a bit more understanding of how she felt. Unfortunately that was never likely to happen. Manyara gave another sigh.

Boinedal had grown bored of listening to the adults from the bushes so he wiggled his way out backwards, coming out with all sorts of leaves stuck in his little blonde mane. He began to scan the area to see where he could go next.
Not far from where he stood he saw a lioness with what almost look like bone makings on her back, a redish pink in color. Usually Boinedal wouldn't approach and adult, but the night was coming to an end and he was bored. Since the female was by herself he decided to throw caution to the wind.
"Hello" he called to her as he made his way over to her. He kept his head held high and his chest puffed out.

She had just started talking herself into getting up and going to bed when a young cub approached her. Manyara lifted her head a bit in surprise. Normally cubs didn't have anything to do with her. She lifted her head and smiled at the young male. "Good evening young one. What brings you out here so late?" She straightened up a bit but remained laying. Where was his parents? She didn't see anyone with purple similar to him in the area. The lioness guessed he was out adventuring among the pride on his own.
She gave a soft giggle then reached up to brush the leaves from his hair. It was odd for a young cub to be running around without friends, particularly when spying on adults as this one had been. She wondered what he was looking for.

Boinedal was happy that the adult that he had approached seemed to be friendly enough. He stood still while she got the leaves from his mane, thankful that he wouldn't have to explain to his mom why they were there when he got home, he was pretty sure that his mother would not condone him sneaking around in bushes listening to other's conversations.
He did notice the female looking around for his parents and he couldn't help to but laugh a little. She no doubt would be looking for a purple coat in his parents but yet his parents were black and grey apparently his purple came from a grand mother who was not a part of the pride. The young male thought he was quite sneaking not even looking like his parents.
"I don't know where my parents are, thats okay though I am allowed to be out here. I have to get back soon but I heard stuff that I didn't understand." Boinedal admitted, he was a little concerned about whether or not he should tell her, he was pretty sure the adults would take this talk serious, and if he told the wrong adult he could get himself in a lot of trouble. That was the last thing he wanted.

She smiled a bit sheepishly as he figured out quickly what she'd been looking for. Without much cub experience it must have been obvious. "Well I'm glad to hear that. I wouldn't want you to get into trouble." Manyara blinked, startled when he made his confession. Most cubs would have brushed off anything they didn't understand.
"Well, I'll try not to keep you too long and answer your questions." He sounded very grown up at the moment. IF something was bothering him she wanted to help. "How about we start with names?" She grinned at him a moment then started, "I'm Manyara." Though she didn't know this cub, he was cute. "Now, what can I help you with?"

Boinedal blushed a little he wasn't use to talking to someone who wasn't a member of his family and already knew his name. "Oh" he stuttered, "I am Boinedal" he told the adult female. "Its nice to meet you Manyara" he said using his best manners, his mom had gone through great lengths to teach him and his siblings their manners after all.
He moved closer to the female, happy that she was still laying down so that he could get close to her ears and would be able to whisper. "I heard people talking about the king." he whispered, he was pretty sure this was a conversation that should be whispered after all all the adults he had heard talking about it had been whispering.
"I don't think some like him." The cubs eyes were full of confusion he had only met one other soul willing to talk about the king and it had been another cub, he wasn't sure he could trust the cubs opinions on the matter.

"It's nice to meet you Boinedal." The female smiled at his cute manors. She was sure he made his mama proud. The lioness wanted to sigh but held it back. If only she could make her mother proud of her. She lowered her head down as he came closer. He seemed about a bit nervous about what he was about to say. She arched a brow as the subject of the king came up. This was deep stuff for a cub.
She pursed her lips as she contemplated the best way to explain what he was asking. To buy herself time she said, "why don't you come here and lay beside me? We can talk so no eavesdropping cubs may hear what we speak of." She winked as she teased him for what had gotten the leaves in his hair. Manyara let him settle himself then began to talk softly to him. "You are a very observant young man to have noticed what you have. The pride is in turmoil, divided, and everyone feels it The king has done some terrible things to get where he is, and to stay there." She paused to see if he had anything else to say, or a question to ask.

Boinedal settled himself neatly beside the female, he could feel the warmth of her body close by and found it comforting, dawn was soon approaching and he was beginning to get tired.
He listened carefully as the older female spoke, his eyes full of concern as he tried to process what she told him. He had had a gut feeling that the king was no good, but they cub who had talked to him just a few nights ago had had only good things to say about the king and well his parents never really said anything one way or another.
"Well if the King is so bad why doesn't somebody stop him?" he asked, his words slow and careful.
"What bad things has he done?" he asked. He wasn't really sure that he wanted to know, but at the same time he wanted to know how bad the situation in the pride really was.

She noticed how carefully he payed attention to her words and the look in his eyes. It was so hard to think of him as young. He took what he'd heard seriously. Now the lioness did sigh. "Someone did dear. I was there when it happened. It was back when I was a cub, like you." She tweaked his nose affectionately. "It was a bit scary at the time, and I didn't understand what was happening. Later I learned it was the king's uncle. But the king won that battle and they left."
Manyara was now torn. She wanted to tell him, but she didn't want to scare him either. How much to tell him? She looked deep into his eyes. "He did some bad bad things Boinedal. The worst has been killing some of his own family." She didn't elaborate and hoped he wouldn't ask too deeply on that. "He has also created a new rank for those of the low class, like me. They are called Royal Guards, and basically they are his call dogs." She wrinkled her nose at the rank. It was clearly offensive to her.

Boinedal wrinkled his nose he didn't like was hearing and his young brain couldn't really comprehend the information that Manyara was giving him. Though he did appreciate that she was telling him anything at all most adults would have blown him off in two seconds flat, and told him off for eavesdropping.
"I see" he said rising to his feet, he was clearly troubled but trying to hide it.
He rose his head to look at the sky it was starting to get a little lighter he had to get home or he was going to be in a lot of trouble. When he looked back towards the lioness he had managed to compose himself.
"I have to go Manyara or I am going to be in trouble, but I have more questions, and I want to talk to you more. Tomorrow I will find you again." he told her. He gave her a brilliant young smile before running away. It was in the way he ran that you would be able to tell his age, he ran like a carefree cub not a cub that just had a heavy story told to him.

It was heavy stuff for a cub. Manyara wondered briefly if she should have told him at all. She felt if he was asking then he was ready to know the answers to his questions. From his reaction, not many adults felt that way. Poor cub, she thought. To hear everyone whispering, and to have all those questions, but no one wanting to explain them. She resolved to speak to him whenever he wanted.
"Good night Boinedal." It was getting late for a cub. She didn't want his mother to worry. The red coated lioness smiled as he said he wanted to talk. "Whenever you have time, come find me." She would make sure she was out in the open on her free time. Once the cub had left, Manyara rose slowly to her feed and padded toward her den. She had much to think about herself.
