Caster was taking a break from the mountain and the ice palace- the one Zared made 'before it was cool'. And when he said it, he laughed.

God, that man needs to have some kids, or else we'll all have to suffer his 'old dad' jokes, thought Caster in annoyance. Caster was always annoyed, really. High-strung. He wasn't angry, just extremely irritated. And he had needed a break.

Standing out in the great outdoors was a small improvement. He was still trying to master his magical abilities. He could cast spells, now, apart from his rose manifestation, but roses still popped up whenever he wasn't concentrating. The mountain and the palace just reminded him of all his past failures and made him more annoyed.

He tried to let his annoyance drain out of him. Eerinna always said his feelings hindered his magic. She said growing flowers randomly and even uncontrollably wasn't so bad, flowers were beautiful. She was so nice. If she wasn't with Zared, Caster thought maybe he would have paid court to her. Maybe Zared knew he thought like that.

But knowing that his annoyance made his powers wonky didn't make it easier to control it. A bush of roses erupted from the ground as he thought that.

"OH F-"

Bree was out and about flying. She didn't tend to stay in one area for too long since she wasn't the type to show off or want unnecessary attention. Plus, she liked to broaden her horizons and know what was out there.

It had been a while and her wings were tired. "Hmm where to land?" She looked down at the ground and noticed roses poping up out of thin air. Bree cocked her head to the side a bit confused. Normally roses did not just pop out of the ground that quick and even so it would have to be some pony that was doing it.

Bree swooped to the ground eventually to get a better look to make sure her eyes weren't playing tricks on her. She eyed up all the roses before taking in their fresh fragrance. For a while she was to dumbstruck and in awe of the roses instead of realizing that there was another pony nearby.

Bree jumped back a bit once she spotted him. "Oh, I'm terribly sorry. I didn't see you there for a sec. Lovely day out isn't it? I'm Bree, a wanderer just in search of new sights. Do you know where we are?"

Caster stared at Bree for a moment, his jaw slack as he tried to take in the sudden sight of a new pony who spoke about fifty words a minute and tried to stifle his long tirade of mostly-bad words at his own incompetence.

He edged over to the new rose bush and stomped on it until there were petals everywhere and crushed stems were leaking juice all over him. His foot hurt, but at least the roses were gone.

"We're in a bit of territory between Nightmare and Dream Valleys," said Caster as though he had not just committed plant homicide. "My name is Caster, and I am from Nightmare Valley." He introduced himself calmly as he was utterly disconnected from his emotions which were a mixed up swill of embarrassment, that someone had seen him fail, rage, at failing, and annoyance, that he continued to fail.

he thought about what she had said and scratched his chin with his rose-juicy hoof. "There are nice things to see in Nightmare Valley," he suggested. "As nice as anywhere else," I suppose..." he realised.

Bree was about to say something, but she stopped herself as she watched the rose bush being trampled. A sad look sort of crossed her face, but it quickly faded. Perhaps the pony had allergies to flowers, so it shouldn't be a problem. She cracked another smile showing it was no big deal, then smacked herself with her hoof realizing how stupid she must look right now.

She waited a bit before continuing. Her parents always told her she was a burden so she didn't want to seem to blabber mouthed, even though that was what she tended to do the most. "I see..." She looked around the area. " I know a dragon that lives there, but that's all. I never got to see that valley since he would be normally in dream valley."

Bree looked towards the border trying to figure out which direction nightmare valley was located. "If you don't mind me asking, what type of nice things do you have in Nightmare valley?"

"Nice things in Nightmare Valley," said Caster slowly. Maybe there weren't as many as he thought. "Well, there's the ice palace, where my teacher lives. Mountains are nice if you like mountains. I do. I like mountains. Nice sea view- the rushing, noisy, powerful sea view, not the calm beach sea view you get in Dream Valley where the sea is quiet."

He looked around, trying to think of other nice things. "Um, I know a place with good food there?" He suggested uncertainly. Yes, food is nice. When it's good.

Bree listened as he talked about all the things in Nightmare Valley. "Actually, that sounds pretty nice. An Ice palace? It must be pretty cold around the area for it not to melt, or else it must be some powerful magic." She continued to listen on as he listed more growing even more interested after every spot he mentioned. "Mountains are nice. My family always wrote about it when they were still alive about some mountains where dragons lived, but I never got to read more of their journal."

She looked down a bit sad thinking about them, but yet it was no use moping about the past. The present is all that mattered and she was alive. "I guess the sea is the flip side here then. Some ponies seem like the sea. Calm one moment, but violent the next." Bree continued to listen to his list of things that were nice. "If you don't mind me asking what place has good food?"

"The ice palace is kept frozen by magic," said Caster unwillingly. "My teacher's mate has a very strong power, but mostly over ice. My teacher is skilled in subtler magics, and I..." His shoulders fell a little and he sighed and firmed them up before he continued. "I make roses grow. Accidentally."

To change the subject from his failings, he rubbed his forelock and said, "I'm sorry your family's dead." He immediately castigated himself for not saying it more kindly, even if it meant the same thing all told. It seemed that this conversation was not appropriate, so he addressed her final remark.

"Heketoro's place is good. Really good, I have no idea, but he is a really great cook. He doesn't even ask paying for it." He'd done it again, now she'd think he was a freeloader. "But, I'll make him some centrepieces or something, you know, to say thanks," he said reassuringly. He had forgotten to do so the last time he had eaten Heketoro's food, and really should go and do something for him. Ack, so much to do...

"Wow! So there are magic ponies in Nightmare Valley too!" Bree stopped herself for a moment. She was kind of hoping she wasn't going to annoy the poor pony to death before she could get all possible info of the place out of him. "Accidentally? If you don't mind me asking, what type of magic do you want to do or are supposed to do?" She stopped herself thinking about it. He did seem a bit embarrassed the first time he crushed the roses in front of her. So it was him that caused it. That sure made a lot of sense. "Well if you don't want to tell me, because I'm a stranger that's fine, but roses are nice flowers. At least they are real. Although a part of my family grew plants and flowers, the other side was more into darker magic, potions, and the such." She was going to say more, but she stopped herself. Bree didn't want to seem like a self absorbed dragon that would boast about her abilities.

She continued to listen as she heard about Heketoro's place. "Wow, that is so generous of him. I wish we had more ponies like that in dream valley." Bree cocked her head to the side to think. "Although I don't think I know too many ponies in general." Bree sighed a bit disappointed by her lack of knowledge. To her knowledge meant life or death. Knowing who or what was a friend or enemy meant everything.

"My uh, magic is the seryph kind of magic," said Caster, again with unwillingness. "My father and my grandfathers are seryphs. My father can make people see things and do things, and his fathers could grow things, I think, or kill things, respectively. So it's possible I could do those kinds of things if I... ever get my magic to do what I like," he muttered darkly. "Then again, my mother is a dragon with healing magic, but I've never been very handy at healing. My brother, Milfoil, he's the healer of the family, but he is not magical.

"I'm sorry if that turned into a family tree discussion," he said, "but I don't know how else to explain- you ask some heavy questions for someone I just met."

Caster nodded quickly in response to her impression of Heketoro as generous. "Tory- Heketoro- he's a generous guy. He's a healer, but he doesn't get a lot of people asking for help these days because of how he heals people. people would rather get healed by my brother, or any of the potion makers. We have a lot of potion makers in my area. No-one's ever sick."

He cleared his throat and, because it seemed like a good idea, asked, "Did you want to come to Tory's and have some lunch? It's not far here, as we fly, and you could meet him. And other ponies, if you wanted to meet more ponies." He stopped babbling- now she was going to get the wrong impression, of him and his offer- Caster felt like an idiot.

Bree listened and could tell he was troubled or irritated by the fact that he could not conjure up great spells like his ancestors. "Hmm...well I'm pretty sure you'll get there. Or if you don't you could always find a way to use what you got." She paused for a moment not sure if she should be giving him advice. "One time I came across these awesome nature demons that could grow vines to use as weapons to strangle, rip, and tear other ponies apart." Once again she stopped herself not sure if she should be rambling so much. "Although I don't want to sound like I'm being too nosy with all this. If you want, we can just drop this subject. I don't want to be rude."

She shook her head. "It's no problem. I'm the one who keeps bringing them up. Besides most ponies I would run into would call me a blabbermouth because I would ask questions about ponies. I like to know who is a possible friend or enemy. I really don't like being ignorant to others or whats around me."

Bree was surprised. "Wow. I guess that helps a lot then. It would be nice to never have to worry about falling ill." She paused for a moment. "Although getting injured from being in a battle is highly possible too if you run into those types." Bree shook her head trying to clear the thoughts of battle out of her head. "It's not that I don't like fighting, it's just I use it as a last resort for survival. Anyways, sure sounds great. I would be happy to meet others." She could tell he felt awkward, but she wanted to try to make him feel a bit more relaxed around her.

Caster looked at her flatly. "That sounds great. Know any way to tear someone apart with rose petals?

"Battling? You have to fight?" asked Caster incredulously. "I've never had to fight anyone. There was going to be... but someone sorted it out. Anyway, if someone had to fight me, they'd have to get through my grandmother first!" He grinned. It was the happiest he had been today, imagining Brittania barreling through his imaginary enemies.

"But, my brother got hit by his friend," said Caster slowly. "His friend Tillian. They were both in love with the same girl, and she chose Haradrin over Tillian and Tillian hit him." Caster looked at Bree seriously. "But he didn't hit back. Because he's a dragon and he is much stronger than Tillian, who's a kirin." He looked at her long and hard and hoped the girl he was talking to wasn't some kind of battle fiend. He wouldn't know how to fight her to defend himself. The best he'd be able to do it fly for his life and send out his mother.

Caster smiled a smile that wasn't a completely trusting one and said "If you want to follow me, Tory's place is very close by air."

Bree was a bit surprised when he mentioned only about rose petals. "Hmm...well I guess that depends. Some ponies use sharp petals, but then again I don't know if you can do that or not." She shrugged a bit. "I only fight if I really have to. It's not something I like to do. Normally I guess I tend to trap someone in an illusion and leave. I guess my method might seem cruel, but it's not like I would go around and do it to others unless they were trying to kill me."

"You're grandmother? Who is she if you don't mind me asking? She sounds pretty powerful the way you describe her." She was a bit curious about more of his family life just because she had never had the opportunity to have one and it sounded rather interesting. "I see. Well that is good that your brother didn't hit him back."

She nodded her head. "Alright. I'll follow beside you if you don't mind."

Caster took off and as they flew, he replied to her. "My grandmother, well, she adopted my mother, so not genetically or that would be weird, is Brittania, the Green Lady. It would be weird because my brother Haradrin is mates with Brittania's daughter, Fiuurin. But they're not related, so it's not weird. Brittania runs the mountain we live in and on.

"Trap people in illusions? Sounds a bit like Jet. Jet Delusion is... well we all treat each other in the mountain like extended family so he's my cousin, not blood related. He traps people in illusion worlds. For fun. I try and steer clear of him, but he is really close to my brother, Blake."

Caster paused. "Sorry I keep babbling about my family," he muttered. Was he rubbing it in? That he had a family and she didn't? He didn't mean to be.

Bree tried to take in all Caster was telling him. "Oh I see. Well it shouldn't matter what I think so long as you all are content." It had been quite some time since she had a nice flight with another pony, most of the time she was solo so it was a nice change of pace. "Yeah, I don't do it for fun. In fact I really don't like mischief. Some ponies tended to call me a pushover since I rarely use my abilities."

She turned her head over towards Caster. "Oh it's fine! I don't mind in the least and I'm rather enjoying listening to all of this. I'm not one to be envious. I'm quite thankful that I'm alive to tell you the truth. That's the best gift for me. Although I can't say that having others who actually care and look out for you would be really nice. Maybe someday I'll get lucky like that...or maybe not. Eh oh well, there's always more adventures I could do." She then focused back towards the front. "Your family does sound really big though."

"It's a very big family," agreed Caster. "It's so big, we have a designated geneologist to make sure we don't accidentally become too friendly. It's never happened, but I like that they have that sorted.

"I was one of seven children in one brood. Huge. Only four of us live in the mountain, but even then, it's still a huge amount of ponies.

"They call you a pushover?" asked Caster. "What do you say back? I wouldn't take that crap, no way. The only one allowed to diss me is me."
