The morning after the hatching, the day before the feast! Carwyn was far too excited for Ceirrys to have gotten any sleep in the remaining twilight hours after the hatching, instead she picked out the gather clothes she would be wearing to the hatching feast, tuned her lap harp, oiled Alaiath, composed a limerick, basically anything that would put her excited energy to good use. Finally, it was morning in Benden and she could get to work on finding Ceirrys a gift with her mother, the trading stalls were likely to be selling morning wares at this hour, but she also wanted to check in to see how he was doing in the weyrling barracks before lunch and so she promptly packed up her things and strapped herself in aboard Alaiath.

Alaiath leaped from their weyrledge and circled once above the dark Malvern before blinking between and emerging above a brightly lit Benden Weyr, bustling with morning activity. She let out a welcoming bugle to the watch and circled down to land lightly near the weyrling barracks, Capella following not far behind. Carwyn stripped off her riding helmet and hurriedly unstrapped herself before dropping to the ground. Alaiath let out a concerned croon, Mine, you should slow down, you'll end up injuring yourself for your excitement! Carwyn turned to face Hers once more and laid a hand upon Alaiath's forelimb, "I can't help it my dear, all this excitement stems from remembering the joy of our impression and I'm just so happy for him, he will finally know the bond between dragon and rider." She did take a moment to assess the situation though as Cappy alighted on her shoulder chittering her own scolding at Carwyn, and she realized that Ceirrys probably wouldn't appreciate her barging into the weyrling barracks, especially if he actually was sneaking some rest before another late night. She frowned at that, but settled on visiting after lunch, and was about to remount Alaiath when she heard a sweet melody emanating from a corner of the courtyard, just over the din of the morning bustle. Carwyn turned to see the green dragonet that had sung so purely at hatching and the young man about Ceirrys' age that she had impressed to.

His treasured lute was once again in his hands, the pressure of the strings making familiar grooves in the pads of his fingers. K'err strummed, shifted his hand along the frets, and hummed. The morning had worn on a bit, and he and Sirinth were making fast progress.

They both kept their eye on the sky, the sun above the lip of the Bowl. The excitement surrounding the Hatching and the impending feast meant the air was busy with traffic. The Weyrlings were starting to wake up, bustling to sort themselves, meet with family, and make preparations for the evening's festivities.

"Okay, now you try it!" he said to her. "From the beginning."

She nodded and sat proper, neck arched and natural, her wings folded neatly and tail sweeping gracefully around her.

He strummed through the opening bars, and counted her in at the end of the phrase. "2... ready... go...."

Her clear, crisp voice didn't balance so well against the lute. She was louder, and K'err wasn't terribly worried about fine-tuning just yet, especially when her singing was so impeccable. He beamed at her, and felt her warmth as she looked back at him.

she told him.

But we haven't gone over...

As they neared the end of what he'd intended, she suddenly stopped. Her eyes flashed specks of yellow.

"Sirinth?"

she asked.

"Hm?"

she sent to K'err. She began walking over to greet them.

K'err turned to follow her, standing as the pair approached. "Hello, I'm K'err, of Benden," he said, extending a hand to the woman. "And this is my Sirinth."

Carwyn flashed the boy a pleasant smile and shook his hand firmly, “Pleased to meet you K’err and Sirinth. I’m Carwyn and this is my Alaiath, the flit is Cappella. We originally hail from Benden, but transferred to Malvern.” Capella alighted on Carwyn’s shoulder and crooned a major scale, sanding Sirinth and K’err an image of an applauding audience, it was her way of showing admiration for the duet.

Alaiath arranged herself delicately near the threesome, she would hate to be in the way during all this bustle, and extended a warm feeling of greeting to Sirinth. You have a most beautiful voice Sirinth, mine appreciated your entrance last night. Carwyn echoed this thought, “Your Sirinth has a striking voice, Alaiath isn’t much for singing, but I received Cappy as a gift from my parents when I joined the Harpercraft and she is quite musical. A draconic voice just lends something magical to a composition,” she brushed a hand against her harp’s case with a fond smile.

Said flit felt enough introductions had been made and turned to Sirinth and sang the beginning notes of a familiar harper tune.

K'err's eyes widened as the flit sang. "Wow... she certainly earns her name!" A whole scale? The pair then grinned and bowed their heads in incidental unison at the flit's praise.

Sirinth told Alaiath.

"I thought she did too, from the very first," K'err replied. "I'd love to hear what you two sound like together! I haven't had a chance to write anything new for us yet, but I'd love some ideas."

He grinned when she brushed the case. "A true 'harp'er," he said, admiring the instrument that must be inside.

As Cappella started singing, Sirinth's head gently bobbed, finding the tempo. Recognizing it, K'err thought his way through the melody. Follow me, he said. I want to see if we can make something work. He slung the lute back around and joined in, strumming along with the chords and humming the tune as well.

Sirinth stepped up and joined in. Then... Follow me, dearest. K'err started humming again, but this time a third above the melody.

There were a couple odd notes, but she locked in to K'err's lead quickly, and there was draconic harmony happening, right there, in the courtyard. K'err beamed. "Keep it up, mine!" he said, continuing to play.

[OOC, I just love this impromptu jam session- we need to have this recur at the feast and bring the other harpers in on it! Also, I miss choir, it has been too long!]

Carwyn smiled at their reactions and at K’err’s play on words, “Yes I suppose so, I learned from my mother.” She watched in anticipation as K’err joined Sirinth and Capella, smiling as layers were added to the tune, grinning even at the odd notes.

Alaiath settled down to enjoy the music being created in this moment while Carwyn unstrapped her harp case and carefully set it upon the flagstons to gingerly withdraw the instrument within. The lap harp’s walnut body gleamed gently in the morning light, it was evidently a well loved and tended for instrument. This became all the more apparent as Carwyn lifted the harp and arranged herself on Alaiath’s outstretched forelimb, her fingers finding their place as if shaking the hand of a dear, old friend. She lost herself in the music, adding rich notes to the melody with her harp and gently singing the familiar words without overshadowing her draconic counterparts.

[OOC, I have the feeling there's going to be at least something. I wonder how much they can get organized in such a short amount of time! lol I was never in choir, but I played trumpet and some piano. :3 It sucks to reach a point to have to choose them over or instead of other things.]

K'err watched Carwyn as she opened the case and took the harp out. It was -gorgeous-. It was things like this that made him wonder if he should learn how to play the more traditional instrument. He was simply too intrigued by it to stay where he was, unable to truly hear her notes over the dragon harmony between them. He circled around slowly, carrying over into the next verse, staying mindful of the harmony.

He heard Carwyn singing as he drew nearer, and started hearing the softer plucks of her strings. He joined in, reinforcing Sirinth's harmony vocally with his high tenor.

When the song reached its end, he swung his lute around and called Sirinth over, excitedly and proudly, and she came bounding. He knelt and wrapped his arms around her, and they nuzzled each other. That was incredible! he thought to her.

I did! I'm glad you did too. You figured out the other notes this time!

she said.

"Ah yes," he said aloud. "I think if we work on that, we'll be able to make that sound together when it's just us."

He'd made a flag to address what Carwyn had said before, and it was time for that now. "I learned from my grandfather," he told her as he rubbed Sirinth. "He was a retired harper, practically raised me. Thought I had some aptitude and taught me himself. This was his lute, actually." He nodded back toward it. "I might go to Harper Hall to learn later, but... I think the wherholds need their own songs now."

Yeah, I did choir in elementary, as my elective in middle school, then through Junior year of high school, but wasn't able to take it in college. I always wanted to learn piano, flute, or harp though, we just couldn't afford the instruments! :'( My brother's girlfriend's sister plays the harp though, so I should get info for her for better rp!

Carwyn noticed K’err drawing closer and let her eyes wander up as she was playing, treating him to a wink as she continued playing and refocused on the notes to be played to continue the harmony and pleased as he joined her in singing the verses accompanying the melody. She lifted her hands from the strings when the last notes faded and smiled, watching as K’err embraced Sirinth. she thought back to Alaiath as a dragonet and the feeling of everything being new and so complete with the dragon in her life.

Alaiath shared Carwyn’s pleasant feeling-despite not remembering those times herself- and gave a happy rumble, broadcasting to all, That was very pleasant, a success in my opinion!

Carwyn nodded her head to K’err’s comments and admired the lute, “I was lucky enough to apprentice at the Crafthall before being searched, never walked the tables though. It did provide the right atmosphere for Cappy though, it took me ages to get her trained to follow a tune rather than create cacophony! I don’t know how much time you’ll find being bonded now, but I would love to hear anything you create for the wherholds-this certainly is an exciting time for Pern, but I fear that the last turn has presented more opportunities for mournful tunes than joyous ones.” Her smile lessened as she thought back to the attacks of the last turn, and those she had lost.

She shook herself from her thoughts though and returned to K’err with a smile, “I do hope I’ll see you and Sirinth at the feast tonight, my brother Ceirrys impressed the “dud” egg. You’re about his age you know.

Sirinth said.

"Thank you, Alaiath!" K'err said.

His face sank as Carwyn finished. "It has indeed..." he began. "Even the usually-joyous songs have been used to try to soothe everyone." He sighed. "But we have to start turning that around, right?"

"We'll be there tonight," he added. "Hopefully we'll be able to pick you out. I'm sorry - there's been a lot of people lately and so many I want to catch up with."

Sirinth reminded him.

Sirinth... he thought.

she said.

"Um," he turned back to what he was saying. "Congratulations to your brother! I'm glad he was able to impress before he got too old. I wish I could say I knew him that well; I've got some catching up to do with my fellow weyrlings. I know you better than I know him now," K'err said with a laugh.

Alaiath was pleased to have her compliments accepted and responded openly, Your welcome, well-done music deserves praise, may you hear much of it in your futures!

"Quite right; I never excelled at composing music, I tend to prefer penning poetry, but with so many young harpers at the wherholds I think we have a great chance at turning things around!" Carwyn replied.

She laughed gently, "Of course there are many people you need to get acquainted or catch up with- you're a brand new weyrling, and from the first wherhold clutch too! I will probably be playing with other harpers in attendance or feasting with Ceirrys in case you find yourself with a moment or two."

"I can see why you wouldn't know Ceirrys too well if you were training as a harper. While our mother made journeywoman I'm afraid not all of my siblings inherited her aptitude for music!" she said with a grin.
