The garden was quiet with only the sounds of rushing water from the stream filling the void of silence. The sun barely risen to morning a woman, the lady of the household, sat meditating on the ground with her zanpakuto stabbed into the ground before her. She was motionless but her expression was at ease and even happy, a small smile escaping her lips. In the quickest of moves something leaped at her from the bushes. Her sharp green eyes shot open and she turned to catch the assailant. Not so much an assailant, with brown fur and stubby legs, a dog wagged its tail in excitement as she held it away from her body in both hands. She sighed lightly and brought the pup closer into her lap. She scratched him behind the ears and began to pet his neck gently while saying in a light ton of voice, “Well now you’re awfully early Aimaru huh?” The pup barked and licked her face, making her turn away from the slobber. She giggled and stood up, putting the pup down. She looked around the garden and noticed the sun rising, like always it was gorgeous but today she had started earlier than usual, most likely due to her lack of sleep the prior night.
Today signified the anniversary of her mentor’s death and, like every time before, she felt a gaping sadness envelop her whenever he entered her mind. Her zanpakuto understood her to where they had conversations almost every day, but today her concentration kept her from speaking to it much. She grasped the hilt and pulled it from the ground and slid it back into the sheath, “Thank you my friend,” she whispered as she bowed her head down in respect. Back down to the dog she smiled and pointed up to the house, “Come on I’ll get you some breakfast.”
The pup skipped up the stone path happily with Shou trailing slowly behind. She wasn’t in any too much of a rush to do anything this morning. As long as she had her morning meditation with Hato, her zanpakuto, she was content. The pup jumped onto the porch and as Shou put on her slippers that were laying under the porch in a small mat she heard another noise from behind her. She looked over her shoulder and two cats, a calico and a pure black, appeared with larger beige dog with darker spots around its body. She was happy to see more showing up, now certain her home was one of safety and comfort for these poor strays. She went over and picked up the two cats and the large dog followed them to the porch where she opened the doors to the dining room. The single table in the middle of the room made it seem bigger than it was, the small area where a photo of Araki was sitting made it seem like a room of memorial than common dining. She sat at the table and prepared bowls of rice for her and some bowls of animal chow for the strays sitting with her. As they ate she did so but stared into space, today was not going to be an easy day...
