Melancholy aside, there was nothing to really stop Vanora from taking a small break away from her family and the herd that she called home. Her eyes scanned the shoreline, alert for any sign of danger, as she wandered slowly through the shallows. It was a strange time for the mare. She was learning how to become more independent and to her that was a good sign that she could begin taking longer sojourns away from home. A splash of color on the horizon caught Vanora's eyes and she changed her trajectory to investigate.

As she neared the colorful thing her gaze widened and she left out a soft sound of surprise as she took in the large form of she assumed was a rather large winged stallion. Her hooves sunk into the dampened sand as she stood immobile by surprise. Was this stallion dead? Vanora was about to go for help before she noted the gentle up and down movement of the stallion's side.

Something was watching him. The stallion blearily opened an eye to scan his immediate surrounding before shuffling his wings a little. Sunset Curacao felt the sun beating down on his form as the mysterious sensation of being watched continued. Feeling as if he had no other choice Sunset shuffled his wings lazily before getting to his feet. His ears caught the sound of a gasp from nearby in front and he let his eyes open fully to take in the sight of a young mare staring at his with a shocked expression. "It is rude to stare at one while they are sleeping."

Sunset Curacao narrowed his gaze a little to keep the sunshine out of his eyes as he squinted at the mare. She had yet to reply to his gruff statement or even move a muscle. Just what was her problem? Had she never seen a fine specimen like himself before?

Vanora continued to gape at the stallion, much like a fish would do out of the water, before she regained enough sense to shake loose the surprise that gripped her. The mare blinked once in response to the gruff statement posed of her before she bristled a little. Any sympathy that she had felt for the stallion instantly evaporated. Her voice carried an edge to it as she spoke up.

"Well I am sorry for being "rude" then. I thought checking to see if you were still alive was more important than worrying about a lack of manners."

Vanora glared at the stallion once before making the hasty decision to turn around and go home. Before she could take two steps though she heard th stallion clear his throat and a stammered out apology. Vanora paused unsure before the colorful stallion moved to stand in front of her. The mare bit back a scathing, "What do you want?" and merely stared down this minor irritation in her day.

Ooops. He had seemingly done it again. The mare's expression and edge to her voice spoke of the fact that he had possibly just insulted her. Sunset clawed the sand creating deep furrows before realizing that the mare was answering him. His eyes widened perceptively as he came to the conclusion that perhaps the mare was only looking out for his interest. As he mused silently he realized that this newest visitor was put out with him and was getting ready to leave when he found his voice. "Hey .. wait, I'm s-s-orry. Don't go."

The angeni-gryph launched himself forward and cut off the mare's path and faced her head on before bowing his head. "Look, I'm sorry. I don't get visitors often."

His words were sincere but had he already blown his chance with this stranger?

Perhaps she was being a little on the naive side but Vanora made one last attempt to calm herself down. The stallion it seemed was trying to make amends by apologizing. Surely she could step up and be lady-like enough to accept the hastily sputtered words. Vanora's green eyes flashed briefly before her expression softened.

"I am willing to accept your words for what I see them as. Please know though that I did not mean to seem rude though. I honestly believed you were injured."

Vanora's mane was caught by the ocean's sudden breeze and fluttered into her eyes. She was glad for the momentary respite of maintaining eye contact.

"What is your name sir?"

Her keen gaze returned to watch the stallion. Would he give her an answer?

At least she had not run off entirely. Sunset Curacao could sense though a remaining wariness around the mare. He would have to step carefully and seemingly on eggshells in order for this encounter to last. Calling on every ounce of courtesy that he possessed, which wasn't very much, the stallion attempted a gallant bow towards the mare.

He glanced upwards before realizing that perhaps he should not attempt to look to a reaction in order to figure out his next cue. His expression wilted a little at that thought before he felt a genuine smile come across his face. "I do thank you for your concern then. It is touching to know that there are others out there who will openly admit that they are worried. Whom do I have the pleasure of meeting?"

Without realizing it Sunset Curacao had totally missed the last question that the mare had posed to him.

There was a moment of silence between herself and the stallion. Vanora realized that although he had not given her a name he had expressed gratitude towards her action of checking on his safety. Perhaps that was a small thing to be grateful towards but to Vanora it was like the stranger had turned over a new leaf. At least she had caught the question that he asked of her. With a gentle, yet patient, sigh she decided to humor this stallion.

"I believe that I had asked that very question of you sir, but to give you an answer, my name is Vanora. Let us try this again. Who are you?"

This time Vanora directed a level stare towards the stranger. He would not get out of providing her with an answer this time.

The angeni-gryph stallion listened to the mare's words and committed her name to his memory. There was a simple beauty in her name to go along with the air of beauty that she carried around herself. His eyes took in Vanora's appearance once more before he cleared his throat. Instinct wanted to take over but Sunset held himself back.

"It is a pleasure to meet you Vanora. My name is a little bit of a mouthful but I am called Sunset Curacao. I'm okay with just being called Sunset though."

With that said the stallion became quiet. He was waiting to see what Vanora’s reaction would be.

Vanora couldn't wrap her mind around the sudden attitude shift that the stallion had taken. Was it truly as he had said that he was merely unaccustomed to having company? Or was there something else at work? Putting aside the questions that she would have liked to get answers to for another time Vanora merely nodded in response to the learning of his name.

In that regard Sunset was right. His full name was a mouthful and there was the risk that she'd mispronounce the last name if she tried. Sticking with Sunset seemed easier for the time being. "I guess that it is a pleasure to meet you then Sunset."

Vanora could feel the tiniest amount of moisture take a path down her down and she grimaced. The sun was too hot on her pale coloration. "Why are you out here in the blazing heat of the day Sunset?"

Sunset Curacao had taken that brief moment when Vanora's attention was away from him to mentally chide himself on lying out in the open where nosy busybodies would find him. He had assumed that this section of beach was unoccupied and had settled down for a much needed rest. Sodium had been posted as his guard but from the time that Vanora had stumbled across him his familiar had flown the coop it seemed. Well he would have some words for the parrot when he returned.

Instead he watched as Vanora was clearly affected by the heat. Truth be told it didn't really bother him that much. Shrugging in response to the mare's sudden question. Figuring though that was not enough of an answer had Sunset finding his voice again. "The truth is that the sun doesn't bother me that much at all. I cannot explain it more than I seem to be able to tolerate the warmer climate better than others seem to do."

At hearing the reply that Sunset had given in response to her query Vanora huffed a little in irritation. It seemed as if some Soquili thought much too highly of themselves. Figuring it was a moot point to argue Vanora settled for trying to learn more about this mysterious stallion. She took in his stature for a moment before focusing more on the visible traits that he possessed. Silently she appraised Sunset for a good amount of time before realizing that she had no idea what it was that she was doing. Chiding herself on aberrant behavior Vanora cleared her throat.

"I think that I owe you a small apology for my earlier misgiving. I thought that you were dying and needed aid. Clearly that is not the case anymore. I am not sure whether or not to admit this but you seem a little stuck up."

Vanora ceased her speaking before feeling more moisture trickle down the side of her mane. She needed to find shade and soon. She was starting to feel overheated. "Excuse me," Vanora broke off as she tried to step around Sunset to peer around for shade. She needed to cool down and fast.

As Sunset listened to Vanora's explanation of her earlier actions the reason that she had seemed so concerned and then put off by his own responses became clearer. The stallion sighed heavily before taking another silent moment to watch Vanora. It was becoming clearer that the mare was not coping well with the rising ambient temperature that surrounded them. Her breathing was becoming strained and all too well Sunset knew what followed if one didn't find a way to cool down and soon.

Knowing that Vanora would not reach shade anytime soon had Sunset acting on instinct. He grimaced as he barreled into the mare and began to shove her towards the water that lay to their right. It was the only relief that Vanora would reach in time and at the moment he was more concerned about keeping his newest guest alive than being gentle. In between shoves the stallion spoke haltingly, "Sorry. Bout. This. Don't fight. Water. Now."

If it was not for hearing the broken off words that Sunset Curacao managed to spit out at her Vanora would have been severely put out by the stallion's shoving. Her breathing had become intensely labored in the day time heat and she stumbled as she was almost pushed off her feet. Vanora righted her balance as she fought to keep herself upright. Having a much larger body almost slam repeatedly into her smaller frame though was not making things easier. Instead of having Sunset ram into her again Vanora turned her body towards the water and without further prompting broke into a run. A few moments of discomfort were necessary in order for her to reach the promise of a much cooler environment.

As she hit the water Vanora instinctively knew that she would have to thank Sunset Curacao's quick thinking. The coolness of the ocean was heavenly on her body. Sinking down to kneel in the shallows Vanora allowed the waves to flow over her back. The mare sighed in relief but her gaze swept uneasily over the distance before allowing herself to relax. Her gaze swung to the shore as splashing noises caught her attention. It seemed as if Sunset felt the need to cool down as well. There was a small voice in her mind telling her that she would have to return to the land in a short period of time due to the salinity of the water that now acted as a cooling agent.

Sunset sighed in relief as Vanora got the hint to move quickly into the shallows. The water would definitely cool down the mare in a hurry. Casting his gaze towards the distant trees the stallion screeched loudly before moving closer to the water. His claws sank into the sand as water rushed around his paws as he sighed a colorful form winging its way towards him. The screeching had been a signal for Sodium to return. He would have need of his familiar when Vanora felt refreshed enough to move from the water.

Vanora stayed in the water for as long as she could. Originally she had wondered about Sunset's screeching but that enigma was solved when a parrot came flying out from the distant trees. She wondered why it had been called but realized that it was not an important question to ask at the moment. Rolling over the mare sputtered as a wave crashed against her neck and water splashed into her face. Feeling much cooler the mare stood shedding water like a second coat and stared at Sunset Curacao before flicking her tail to rid herself of the water that clung to the hairs. Drying salt water would form a crust of white that she wanted to avoid. She allowed herself one more moment in the cooling water before exiting. She would be content walk just at the edge where water met the beach but she needed to express her thanks first.
