Horae paced at the border of the pride, trying to calm herself down before her shift ended. It was hard for the lioness to be anything but angry lately. Everything was so complicated, and she was so torn on how to feel. There were times when she wanted to run away, times where she wanted to kill Shangyue...and times where she just wanted to give up. In the end, the only thing that kept her going was her family. She had been trying to shift her focus on them, to make sure that they were happy and safe. Some days that was easier than others, and today she was having a hard time calming herself down before returning to them. "Everything will be ok," she breathed, exhaling between her teeth. She felt her claws pick at the earth as she slowed her pacing, her breathing becoming more normal. "Its ok...."

In Atz'mayiy's opinion, everyone in the pride took things waaaaaay too seriously, especially since King Shangyue came into power. Sure, she remembered how worried everyone had been at the deaths of the King and Queen, but that was no reason to still be so nervous or angry or whatever emotion it was that kept them from smiling and having fun. From childhood, the pale purple lioness had been a prankster, and she wasn't about to let worry and drama stop her from putting a bit of fun back into the pride! Which was why, a bit before she was due to go on duty, the lioness was creeping along the ground as quietly as she could. The brown lioness she was here to relieve wasn't easy to see in the darkness, but Horae wasn't being that quiet. Atz paused a moment, considering the best way to surprise the older lioness. "Boo," she said at last, in a fairly normal tone of voice, though she didn't stand or otherwise reveal herself. She didn't want to frighten the poor female to death, after all!

Horae hadn't been paying a lot of attention, but she thought she had heard something. Something?? Someone? Whatever it was, it was approaching. A large part of her was hoping it was something from the border so she could attack it...but that was extremely doubtful.
So when she finally saw who it was, she hissed as she exhaled again through her teeth. Her fur arched up on her back a bit, partly from the surprise, and partly from frustration.
Still...she wasn't going to let herself get mad at her. No. It wasn't her fault she was so angry.
"Well," Horae finally said, smoothing her fur out with a shake of her body. "I see you're here to relieve me. At least you didn't shock me dead."

Green eyes surveyed her work with pleasure as Horae noticed her. As the older lioness spoke, Atz rose from her position and trotted over cheerfully.
"True enough! Unless if you wanted me to? I could certainly try harder, do more, or something completely different," the red-haired lioness mused aloud, considering other pranks she could pull. Not right away of course, and perhaps not on Horae any time soon - there was nothing worse than an overused or mistimed prank. Then you became predictable and Atz certainly didn't want that to happen.

Horae sighed. She wasn't that old of a lioness, but sometimes she felt really old. Right now was one of those times.
"In a lot of ways, that wouldn't be a bad thing," she sighed. She didn't totally mean it, but the struggle of trying to decide what path she should follow was wearing her thin. Thankfully being a guard was simple enough work, and there wasn't much of a threat at the moment...externally.
"Tickling with feathers might get you smacked," the dark brown lioness grunted, though somehow she was offering ideas to the trickster...? Well, she was so friendly it was hard to not give ideas to Atz.

The younger lioness nodded in agreement. She knew as well as Horae that the pride definitely needed more fun. Which was part of why she'd made it her unofficial job to bring more in!
Her green eyes narrowed thoughtfully as the brown lioness mentioned feathers and tickling as she considered the idea.
"Hmmm...true...and feathers are so light that you'd really have to touch the right places - someone's nose or pads, and even then, some people's pads are so tough and callused that I don't think they could feel a thing. But," she added with a hasty smile for Horae, "it's not a bad idea! Just needs some work!" And some experimentation, to find out how much pressure was needed to exact a response, and where it could be applied most effectively and - most importantly - if it could be done from a distance.

"Can't be that hard to find some feathers around here," she shrugged. Was this really happening? "I mean, someone had a stalker bird for years, it can't be that hard to find some feathers lying about."
Hmm...how was she getting wrapped up into this? Perhaps it was a side affect of being too upset lately...she needed an outlet. "You could just blow some of the feathers from behind...that might scare some of the more jumpy members. Hopefully they aren't guards...just some hunters."
If they had jumpy guards, well....she'd be questioning their head guard!

"Really? I never heard about a stalker bird!" Atz replied cheerfully as Horae offered suggestions. She hadn't really thought about multiple feathers and it was true that there were birds who did nest in and around the Mwezi'Johari lands. Surely it wouldn't be too hard to acquire a small collection of them for her purposes.
"Those are some good ideas" she told the older lioness. "We'll make a prankster of you yet!" After all, Atz'mayiy couldn't do it all by herself all the time! More pranks meant more fun meant more people were having fun and more people were smiling and everyone would be happier!

"Eh, must have moved on." Horae hadn't paid much attention to it, though sometimes it had been easily seen in the sky...oh well.
"I'm sure you'll get a collection, but don't count on me helping. Its enough just trying to keep a scowl off my face, let alone make other lions not scowl too." Horae had been pretty foul-tempered lately, though doing her best to make herself not so insufferable.
"Thanks for helping, though. Hopefully the shift is quiet for you, but not too dull."

"Why would it have moved on if it was stalking someone?" Atz wondered aloud. She supposed she'd have to ask someone else about it. Aysu would be a good choice...but she hadn't been seen lately. Maybe she'd gone the same place that bird had gone...hmmm.
The younger lioness was also a bit sad to hear that Horae would rather scowl than smile. She immediately resolved to do something to help. Maybe...a mask? Of a smiling face? Something, at least. She'd think it over on her shift.
"Oh, I'm sure everything will be fine," Atz reassured the older Guard. "Go on! I'll see about picking up any feathers I find." She made a shooing motion to the brown lioness with a smile, hopefully Horae would have a better rest of the night!

Horae laughed (laughed!) a bit. "Alright. I'll see you at another shift change," he said, waving off the younger lioness before leaving. She would at least keep her eye open for some stray feathers
Right now, she was intent on finding her family and settling down to rest. Laelia's kids were probably getting so big, she was ready to share more guard stories with them.
Fin.
