It had been a long time since she had spent so long on dry land. She could feel her hooves drying out. It wasn't an unpleasant experience, but it was a strange one. She waited for Syri now. He had said he would bring back a surprise, and she smiled to wonder what it might be. He was so very thoughtful. He knew she did not have much experience with these lands, so went out of his way to teach her about it and the wonderful things that grew in places other than the swamps. Some plants were delicious, others were beautiful. There were songs of birds she had never heard as well. She missed the raucous call of the red-winged blackbirds, but could grow used to the cry of jays as well.

She turned her dark face to the sunlight, shutting her eyes. She missed the swamp, but there was so much warmth here. There was much that she could find ways to enjoy.

Vajrayana was wandering. He had no real destination in mind, but herd life was starting to wear on him. Sometimes, he envied those who set off on their own. Kumarajiva, who had been a foal together with Vajrayana, had left for another group, some herd that made tea. Vajrayana had thought it was a silly decision at first, but now he had to wonder whether Kuma had been the wiser all along. The Padmapani herd was pleasant enough, but there was something so constraining about living in the place where you had always lived. There was so much of the world he had never seen, and never would see at this point.

Vajrayana sighed to himself and shook his head. That was no way to think. He was considering this when he came upon her, the kirin mare with the spooky demeanor. He had experience with spooky sorts, but this one was more beautiful than frightening. "Hello, there," he said in surprised greeting.

Rusalka's ears flicked forward nervously. She had gotten more used to the company of others since befriending Syri, but it had not been a swift transition. She didn't bolt when she saw strangers anymore, but she never knew exactly what to say to them either.

"Hello," she replied quietly, looking at his flashy markings and even flashier adornments. Was he some sort of royalty among soquili to dress himself as such? She couldn't remember ever seeing as exquisitely dressed a soquili in her entire life. Sunlight glinting off his gold jewelry almost made him difficult to look at.

Padmapani had a few kirin in its midst, so Vajrayana was not unused to seeing them. This one looked like she had plants attached to her back, or perhaps growing out of it? Her mane looked wet and slick, like tendrils of some plant that grew underwater. Her tail was inky and black, lengths of hair pooling on the ground beside her. Overall, she projected a very mysterious air. He thought he could discern some light glowing from her horn as well, though that would probably have been more dramatic in the dark.

"My name is Vajrayana," he hoped that a swift introduction might put her at ease. "I am part of the Padmapani herd."
