"Stop it, you damn bird!" Hermes tossed his head, trying to dislodge the large blue owl that had wrapped its talons into his mane. The bird had already gouged a few slashes into him. They would not kill him, but they were running blood down his neck. The owl was clearly spirit-touched, carrying the bright colors of a creature able to think and speak for itself. That was what he couldn't understand. If it was more than a dumb animal, why was it attacking him and not listening to reason?
"Whatever I have done, I apologize!" he shouted, hoping that it might buy him some respite. "I am not here to harm you!" What he was here for was to hunt down some pigments for his favorite Kawani artisan, but that wasn't going to happen now. He'd have to spend his day getting his wounds cleansed rather than spend it watching them paint beautifully. It was not ideal, to say the least.

It was no mere owl that tangled with Hermes, but Mauhur the purewalker. He was full of bloodthirst and rage at someone invading his territory. He only rarely ventured outside of his territory with the intent to hunt soquili, but when they came where they didn't belong, he had no mercy. He screeched an owl's wordless cry, angry and piercing. He so rarely spoke that he sometimes forgot how to use his voice, so rarely transformed that he sometimes forgot he even had another skin.
The stallion's thrashings were not successful in dislodging him, but when he added in the flapping of his broad wings, Mauhur could no longer stay put. He was flung off his prey and spun through the air briefly before regaining his bearings. He let out an angry hiss, realizing he could not subdue prey this large in his current form. He would need to transform, and so he did.
With horrible cracking and tearing sounds, he ripped out of his owl skin and back into his soquili one. Now things would get dangerous.

"You're a sk-skinwalker?" Hermes could barely get the word out of his mouth, for all the fear it provoked. He had heard about the horrible monsters and even heard stories from those that had survived them, but never before had he met one face to face. His body knew what to do even if his stunned brain did not. Even before the skinwalker had finished transforming, he was bolting away. His wings beat frantically at the air and then he shot skyward. He prided himself on his speed and maneuverability in the air, especially after so much of his life had been spent grounded. Now was the time to put that to the test.

Mauhur screeched again and took to the air after his prey, but he knew he wouldn't be able to catch him. The wind didn't even pause to look back. He shot away from Mauhur at top speed. The wind had enough of a head start that Mauhur wasn't able to catch up with him, instead steadily falling further behind, though his claws ached to be sunk into flesh.
With another furious screech, Mauhur wheeled and turned, abandoning the chase. He had defended his territory even if he hadn't managed to kill the interloper.
Fin.
