Leilani had gotten word via the grapevine that her father wanted to see her. Apparently he had news. Truth be told, he wasn't the only one. Though she was willing to bet that hers was a bit more obvious. It had practically been forever by now since she had last come home heavy with foals. At least the circumstances this time were far less melancholy, as she wasn't going to end up with a broken heart. With the sire of these foals it wasn't quite love...more a gentle trust and understanding. Lothlorien had been a wonderful host when she ended up in his herd's lands and things had progressed from there.
At the news of her pregnancy he had been surprised, but had not balked at the idea. It was her intention to return to his home and give birth to the foals there. What happened after that was between their sire and herself. Other obligations had prevented him from traveling with her now; so rather than wait for him and risking it becoming unsafe to travel she went ahead. Winter was coming and while she did not mind it so much, the mare wasn't fond of the idea of giving birth to her foals in some snowy cave, all alone.
Allegro had considered bringing Zuleikha home to meet his grandfather and mother but ultimately he decided against it...at least for now. The hippogryph mare could very well have been elsewhere anyway. He knew she had taken other lovers and there was a good chance she was with one of them. The two of them had a pretty good arrangement going, being a pair but being far from exclusive. That was how she had always been and it suited him just fine. He was able to explore all the different possibilities. Given the rest of his family it might be considered pretty odd, but he was happy and that was what mattered.
"Mom 's late." It was just an observation, rather than obvious annoyance. "I wonder if she even got your message."
"I'm sure she did, our little system has never failed us before." Colonel snorted softly and scuffed a hoof on frost edged grass. "She is just late, like you said." Leilani was known for her cheerful manner rather than her punctuality. It wasn't the first time she was late, nor was it likely to be the last. The sound of hoof falls just off a short distance caused his ears to perk up. "That is probably her now."
Irierath turned toward the direction of the sound, waiting to see if it was indeed Colonel's daughter that came into view. "I hope she likes me." If she did not it was going to be a bit weird, given how she felt about the mare's father. At least the painted mare knew how she stood with the pink stallion, Colone's grandson, Allegro. He had been nothing but pleasant with her and was delighted to see his grandfather genuinely happy again.
She whickered when a brown coated white manned mare came into view. That absolutely had to be Leilani. Though Colonel said his daughter had gotten her looks mostly from her mother, Irierath could see plenty of her father in her as well. Though there was one thing he had neglected to mention, but perhaps he had not known. His daughter was pregnant. And, no, apparently from the look on Colonel's face he did not know.
"Uh...Mom?" The pink stallion had not had any idea either. His mother had certainly not been 'in the family way' the last time they had run across one another.
It was indeed unexpected and not something he was at all prepared for. Though to her credit Leilani seemed well and in far better spirits than the first time she had come home with a belly swollen with foal. "I'm glad to see you." He nuzzled her in greeting and she returned the gesture. "Its been far too long....I trust you have been well?"
Leilani had spotted her son first and approached him, nuzzling in greeting. It wasn't difficult to decipher his stunned look. "so you can stop wondering. No, its not too many sugarcubes. Siblings. Half siblings, technically." Her greeting to her father came afterward. "It has been too long...and, yes, very well." Time had improved her disposition and opinions about life, so she was a bit more back toward her filly-like self: pleasant and cheerful.
Irierath was the odd one out and thus easy to spot. "And who is this?"
"My name is Irierath." She gave Colonel's daughter an easy smile whens he cocked her head curiously. "I am your father's...." Now what was the word he used? "Companion." Yes, that was the right one. There was affection between the two of them to be sure, but things were not serious yet. Neither was sure that it was truly love. Irierath was admittedly a bit naive about such things and Colonel's heart had been bruised so they agreed to proceed carefully. Something about the term they used for one another seemed to amuse Leilani now, but hopefully in time she would come to understand.
Oh she understood full well. Her father was enamored with this mare. She could see it in his body language. That had happened more than once, but something about this particular one seemed to be different somehow. "It is nice to meet you Irierath. I am Leilani, as you might have suspected. I take it you already know my son?"
"Allegro, yes." Irierath had met the grandson shortly after meeting Colonel. The elder stallion had run across her and befriended her as they traveled together. And he had offered to remain with her a while after learning she had just left the village not too long ago. That had been a fair bit of time ago now and everything had stemmed from that day. Despite the fact that Colonel was probably old enough to be her father, or even grandfather, she found him to be very charming and gentle. Both qualities that were very appealing in a stallion.
"It was kinda surprising to meet her the first time. Never figured gramps had it in him." Clearly Allegro enjoyed teasing them. If nothing else he thought it might get them to just spit out how they really felt about one another. His grandfather clearly thought his new mare hung the moon from the way he looked at her. It was mostly a question of whether she felt the same or not...though he had a feeling she did, even if she didn't quite get it yet. He had not when he was her age. Not that he was much wiser about such things now that he was older.
Not to change the subject but... "And not to be rude, but am I allowed to ask about that?" He indicated his mother's belly with a lifted muzzle.

And there was the other horseshoe dropping! Though it hardly surprised her Allegro was the one who asked first. "It was something I met while traveling." She couldn't help but snort at the eyeroll her son gave her. "An angeni named Lothlorien...on the Night of the Spirits." Leilani wasn't sure what caused more of a stir in her family, the word 'angeni' or the mention of the Night of Spirits. Her son appeared more curious, her father was surprised...but Irierath seemed concerned for some reason. "Anything I need to know about?"
"I've heard strange things can happen to foals that were gotten on the Night of the Spirits." The young mare's hoof picked at the grass and her tail swished somewhat nervously. It probably wasn't her place to say these things, but she did not want anything unpleasant to happen to Leilani either. "Never seen any personally, so I can't say for certain. But I just thought you should know...just in case." Better safe than sorry. Hopefully Leilani did not end up giving birth to literal monsters...though the angeni blood might cancel it out since they were supposed to be the purest of beings?
It was unfortunate sometimes that most of what she knew was stories rather than the truth of things. So it was hard to say one way or the other. This was one of those times.
"Angenis have wings don't they?"
"They do." He exchanged a look with his daughter, wondering where she had ended up to have befriended one.
"I don't envy you right now, Mom." Giving birth to things with wings? No, probably wasn't going to be fun at all.
"What will be, will be." There was not any way to tell if her impending foals had wings. Still she had not thought much about until her son had said something. And it was something that seemed best not to dwell on right now. "But this was supposed to be about you and Irierath, not about me. Why don't we head somewhere else and talk?" Perhaps even back home since it wasn't far away.
"Yes, lets. I know you haven't been home in a long time." Given she had left shortly after her first foals had been grown enough to leave on their own and hardly been back since.
