There was blood pounding in her ears, the thunder of hooves, cackling in the distance. Bitey ran, and she knew it was for her life.

She met Lux as a child, but hadn’t thought much of it then. She’d heard the stories of course, but she hadn’t truly believed them. Until now. The mare was on a rampage, and she seemed to be enjoying it; anyone was at risk, and Bitey was glad the area was sparsely populated.

Run!” she called when she spotted a lone figure in the distance. The few soquili she’d met earlier questioned her words, but the echoing laughter that followed from behind was usually enough to convince them. She thought the same would apply now, but the closer she got, the clearer it was that the figure had not moved an inch. “Danger’s coming! Hurry!

Rouxe soared overhead, gliding on outstretched wings beneath the morning sun. Weed clung to her neck, tied securely in place with the scarf she usually used as a blindfold. Bitey’s cry wasn’t so loud that those in the air could hear it, but from the speed and posture of the mare, it was obvious there was trouble.

Without hesitance, Rouxe tucked in her wings and dove, racing to close the distance between them. She snapped open her wings at the last minute to stay above the treetops – she didn’t know what was going on, but she wanted to be able to return to the skies at a moment’s notice if necessary – and circled, scanning the ground to find the source of the disturbance.

Oh? Is this a chase? How exquisite!” Kestrel piped in, diving after his flying companion. Apparently, he thought they were going to be the ones to cause trouble; but, to be fair, he wasn’t wrong. The only question was who their target would be.

He kept behind Rouxe, watching her with sharp eyes. They'd only met a few days prior, but it hadn't taken much for him to choose to follow her. As they say, opposites attract, and she was so antisocial she was practically a magnet for any exciting activity or situation that compelled her to intervene. Ah, how he did love to be proven right!

Viktor blinked sleepily as an odd blue mare ran in his direction shouting of danger. "What in the world..." he mumbled, looking behind her, but seeing nothing. Did this mare not realize that the danger was already here? In this clearing? The danger was him. His curse.

"Leave me," he called, before flopping onto the ground. He sighed and continued to count the blades of grass beneath his hooves. The mare was an interesting interruption to his sad daily life, but she would leave soon. And this was a good thing. He didn't want to hurt anyone else.

Ridley was bored. This was never a good thing. In fact, he almost always got himself into some sort of trouble whenever boredom took over. This was one of those times. Being the only one in his family with wings gave Ridley a huge advantage. He could swoop away and explore on his own with little worry. He had never encountered anything dangerous in the sky. It was his special place.

He had been lazily gliding, when he had spotted two others flying ahead. It was rare of him to see others so close on his flying trips. Perhaps they were friendly? As he was about to call out, they suddenly dove lower. Ridley blinked and copied their movements. This was surely something that warranted investigation.

Lux's memory was as sharp as her teeth. So when Bitey had unknowingly stumbled across her path, Lux remembered her clearly. She associated the mutant mare with them. That family that plagued her. The ones that got away. This mare had gotten away too. Lux had admired her oddities. She had wanted Bitey for her uniqueness. Her potential. And now she had another chance. Despite no longer being a foal, the mare was quick to flee at Lux's initial advance. It had turned into a chase. Lux loved chases.

Her heart pounded, not from exertion, but from excitement. Her cloven hooves mimicked her heart and beat against the ground ferociously, gaining on Bitey. Lux's cackles and manic laughter filled the air. It had been so long since she had done dirty work herself, she missed the rush, the thrill of the chase and eventual capture of prey. She saw Bitey in the distance now, she was so close. There was another with her, but Lux didn't care. She only had eyes for her new minion.

Bitey continued to rush forward, but despite her warnings, the stallion didn’t move. On the contrary, he decided to lie down!

She looked over her shoulder, checking her progress. She traveled often, and she was built for endurance; long runs were no trouble for her, but she had slowed to warn the stranger and Lux was quickly catching up.

It’s her,” she called, as if that would be enough. Despite her fear, she came to a full halt beside the stallion and butted him with her nose. When that proved ineffective, she gripped his mane and tugged. “We’ve got to move, or—what?

She spun round, eyes on the three shadows overhead.

It didn’t take long for Rouxe to realize what was going on. The dense forest opened up into a small clearing, a cave and a brown soquili at its edge. That the blue mare had rushed up to warn him of some danger was no surprise; that his only response was complete and utter apathy, however, was. People had a tendency to save their own skins, and the red ‘suti halfbreed made it clear that his was about to be crisped.

She didn’t know much of details – why the mare was being chased and whether she deserved it, why the stallion didn’t seem overly concerned, and why the ‘suti was pursuing in the first place – but what she did know was that someone was about to be hurt, and it had to stop. Battles in war and among peers were fine, but in this case, it was clear the ‘suti was the only willing party.

She flew towards the ‘suti mare with claws outstretched; at the last minute, she angled her wings to fly up and out of reach. It had been a demonstration, nothing more, and she hoped it would be enough. The fox on her back cried piteously.

Kestrel laughed, the sound coarse and raspy. As expected, the audience was already growing. He followed Rouxe but, unlike her, landed entirely beside the mare and stallion, the flare of his wings and tails making him a presence that was hard to ignore. He stretched one wing before folding it against is side, then the other, the movements languid and unhurried.

What’s going on here?” he drawled, his voice like sandpaper. He wasn’t entirely clear what Bitey was up to, but he did agree the brown stallion’s mane looked to be in dire need of combing. Without hesitance, he began to run his claws through them. Fascinating. He’d never seen hair so long.

He glanced over his shoulder at the newcomer while he waited for a reply (they were perfectly capable of speaking even if he wasn’t looking at them, after all!), wondering what role the white stallion had in all of this, and whose side he was on.

Viktor stared wide-eyed at the mare that was man-handling him. What was she doing?! She should not be touching him! He quickly rose to his hooves and backed away.

"Do not touch me - I'm cursed," he hissed. "Leave this place!"

He was about to continue his tirade when he spotted a group approaching from the sky and spotted the large orange and red 'Suti running towards them. He saw a clawed mare swoop down and interrupt the orange mare's pursuit. Was this what the blue mare had been running from? He turned to Bitey.

"Go while you still can. Leave me here." Was this where he'd make his final stand? Would he finally be rid of his awful curse? His caretaker from long ago had told him that to die fighting was a great honor. He did not offer much strength, but he was not planning on surviving. If he just bought the mare enough time to run, or shielded her - that would be enough, right?

His morbid musings were interrupted by Kestrel. In shock, Viktor stood frozen while the big winged stallion brushed his hair. Recovering, he yanked his hair from the stallion's claws.

"Stop that! Who are you? You need to leave! All of you!"

Nothing could ever be easy for Lux, could it? She heard the figures overhead before she saw them. She hissed and backed away, keeping her eyes on the clawed mare that circled overhead. Were these friends of her minion? She was far outnumbered... she had not brought reinforcements. It was her mistake. She narrowed her eyes, seeing a winged stallion swoop down, trying to mimic the mare's earlier move. She backed away from his dive, and smirked when he snapped his wings out to rise back into the air a little too late. Lux took the opportunity lunged, latching her jaws around one of his ankles while her tail wrapped around another. He smacked into the ground with a satisfying thud. Maybe with a little leverage she could trade this downed little dove for her minion to be.

Ridley had copied the winged mare's movements, and dove towards the 'suti. His large frame cast a menacing shadow over Lux. He attempted the same move, but did not factor in his difference in weight. The sting of teeth biting into his front leg was nothing in comparison to the pain of the air whooshing out of his lungs as he crashed into the dirt. He stayed still for a moment, gathering himself. He went to roll away, but was stopped by the serpentine tail wrapped around this ankle and a cloven hoof on his chest. He was in a bad position. Even worse, he didn't know if he had any allies. He had acted without thinking, something that often got him into trouble.

                          "Let me go," he growled.
