A few hours had passed after the touching, and things were slowly quieting down. At least a little bit, or so Kalendol saw it. But, there were still chores to do, a lot of them seeing as every candidate was pulled away. Grabbing her bucket and rags, the girl hummed a little, tossing her coppery hair back over her shoulder before frowning and looking at the bucket in her hands. 'Dirty water on my knees is not my idea of a fun chore.' She sighed heavily.
Setting the bucket down, she pulled her hair back, looping it into a bun before slamming her black cap down on top of it, keeping the messy curls from falling around her neck and chest while she cleaned. Kalendol sighed, and then looked around the dining hall with a sigh. 'I really wish someone else had done this while we were at the touching.' Scrubbing floors in the Dining Hall was not one of her favorite duties. If she had anything to say about it, which she did not, Kalendol would tell someone else to ensure the candidates stomped all the gunk off their shoes before eating.
The girl shook her head slowly, her hazel eyes now refocusing on the soapy water within her bucket. 'No time like the present.' She smiled and then set to work, bending down on her knees as she scrubbed mercilessly at the floor. 'Must sparkle and shine. If I cannot see my reflection then it is not cleaned.' She mused. Kalendol was one for musing.

Jamarin. Hope you don't mind I made. I was bored.

Someone had taken offense to Jamarin being combative again, and so here he was with the filthiest of chores. Was it his fault that everybody sucked so much?
Well fine. Work was not a punishment for him, and he scrubbed at the floor with all the seriousness that good, hard work was due. It would have been better, obviously, if it wasn't a womanly chore like cleaning, but so long as it wasn't laundry, Jamarin could suck it up.
Besides, as womanly chores went, cleaning the dining hall was pretty shaffing grody. Dirt masculinized it, and made it even more worthy of doing.
He hadn't paid much attention to the other candidate assigned to the duty, so when he looked up and happened to see her scrubbing away on the other side of the room, he was surprised to find that it was the pretty girl from the Touching.
He debated whether to say hi to her, and eventually gave in. “Yer... Kalen, right?” he asked, pretending that he didn't care...
Kalendol's head snapped up from her work, and for a moment her right eye twitched and her lips pursed. Not only was someone getting her name wrong, they were boldly interrupting her during her cleaning. "This'd better be good fore I fee-- Oh!" She'd turned around and then froze upon seeing Jamarin was on cleaning detail with her. "N...no. It's Kalendol. But Kalen works too." She smiled charmingly, a faint blush touching her cheeks. 'Well, this is a surprise. Didn't think he'd talk to me again, after all, everyone says he's a bit of a jerk.' "You're Jamarin, correct?" Names. Success.
The girl was so good with names, and right now she was definitely thanking that skill. Slowly, she turned back around and continued scrubbing, 'Ugh, what to say?' "Are you feeling good?" She asked cautiously and then winced, "About the touching I mean. Any real winners?" Her hazel eyes were trained on the soapy utensil in her hand, but her muscles tensed expecting him to either laugh his arse off like an insufferable shard or to snap some retort back. To which she could deal with, naturally. Despite her more sensitive nature, she was somewhat practical.

She remembered my name thought Jamarin, suddenly feeling like a pile of dog crap, She remembered my name and I forgot hers. “Kalendol works fine too.” he said, hiding his embarrassment with ease as he took out his frustration on the floor. How the shaff did Jikki do this 'talking to people' thing so easily? “Sorry about messing it.” he dragged out, hating the apology as it excreted itself from his mouth. He made a distasteful face at it.
People are hard
“Er, well...” he had to give it some thought. His was not a brain for thinking, but at least he could work and think at the same time. “Dunno. It was sort of...” he paused, “New. Lots's of things happenin' in my head, you know?” he shrugged, “Hard to sort it out.”
Damn. Now he was rambling. Well, he was on a roll, right? At least he was talking to a pretty girl (And his dimglow brother's teasing had nothing to do with it.) If he kept talking to her, maybe she'd talk to him again.
Wouldn't that be nice?
“My brother, though. He fancies that gold egg.” Jamarin snorted “Can you imagine that?” he said, chuckling roughly.
Kalendol shook her head and looked over her shoulder at the other candidate, her eyes softening, she tilted her head slowly to the right. "Oh, no need to apologize. I don't mind, Jamarin." Her smile brightened and she went back to work. At least she was with another candidate who was somewhat personable and didn't make her feel highly uncomfortable. Now, Emmitod was a different story. "It's okay if you forget, you can just call me Kale, Kay, Kalen, whatever you like." The girl laughed at this and then hummed softly as she worked, not that she had any talent in it, but it was definitely easier than being in silence as she awaited more things to discuss with this guy.
As the work dragged on, her attention became more focused and she fell into an easy rhythm, occassionally her rhythm brought her into closer proximity to the other candidate, and she'd only blush and continue scrubbing. Her red hair had by now come to fold out of her cap, caressing her slender neck as it fell. She blinked and then looked up at Jamarin, "I see, yes, the touching was rather intriguing, with all things in light. The dragonets seemed thrilled to be paid attention to. Do you think you'll impress?" Her hazel eyes flashed towards the other candidate and she grinned.
The seventeen turn old smirked a little, "That Keep Out egg seemed ready to bite at everyone. Poor darling, must be hard being encased in a dragon's shell." She mumbled, more so to herself than the other candidate. Though, perhaps the candidate would prove a good match, given the hard working nature, and the slightly irritable side that Jamarin possessed. Kalendol was more free flowing, willing to serve. She thought that perhaps a blue would suit her better. Though, she'd had her hopes on a Crimson since seeing the crimson at the questioning. It seemed more to her style than anything else. The young teen blinked her eyes and rocked back on her heels, admiring her reflection in the floor around her which shined with pristine cleanliness.
"The gold egg? It's a shame that golds don't impress to men." The girl would muse, blinking her long lashes towards the other candidate. "I can imagine that though. Jikkiri seems like he'd definitely take to the kinder, powerful, natures of the golds; more so than he would take to the natures of bronzes or silvers. Do you think he'd impress as well?" She asked gently, looking back at her reflection. "I think he stands a good chance of impressing. Though it'd be better if you two were able to impress at the same time, after all, it would be difficult not having a sibling around to be with you during the rigorous training new riders go through." A sort of sadness inflicted her tone as she stared at her reflection now. She missed her family. And although she did not want them here should she fail, she longed for their support too. Even her dimglow brother Kinder would be happily welcomed.
"My brothers all tried to impress before me, none of them were able to do it. Although, they're all too old now, I still get this melancholy feeling. My family has never impressed. I want to make them proud." Soft tears filled her eyes at the thought, but she brushed them away with the backs of her rawhide covered hands, laughing at her own sadness in a way that made it seem as though she'd been picked on when she was younger. "My brothers hated that I wanted to follow in dad's footsteps. He's a tanner." Now, at this point, Kalendol was trying to make light of a bad situation, and keep the conversation going. They still had an immense amount of ground to cover. Only two candidates on Dining Hall duty today meant that the work would take quite some time. "I was teased a lot for being too boyish." She confessed and her face lifted to admire the boy.
"What about you? What was your childhood like?" Kalendol questioned as she went back to scrubbing, her little clean patch merging with the boy's clean patch as well.

… So he hadn't completely shaffed up his chances. Good. Jamarin was out on a limb here, and he was kind of starting to like it up here in... talking to people... land... Shards, he was bad with analogies.
“Nice to have a bunch of nice names like that.” Jamarin managed to comment, eventually. Silence had never felt so awkward before. Normally, he was fine with silence, but right now he was really trying to be social and it would have been dissappointing if his valiant efforts were met with only silence. It would have been worse if he'd just been sitting next to her or something, but even now, even here, even with the scrubbing brush and bucket, it felt weird. “Jikkiri's got 'Jikki' or 'Jik', which 'ent bad. Best I get, though, is Jam. I 'ent jam.” he scoffed, “'less you can fit me in a jar.”
As her hair felt onto her neck, he found himself noticing that it was damn shiny stuff. Not that he hadn't at the Touching, but it was just... pretty. Her eyes were pretty. She was pretty. Other girls were also pretty, though he hadn't managed the courage to actually talk to one properly before the touching.
And he had to keep up that courage a lot more than he was used to because Kalendol used some awfully big words. “Yeah.” he said, hesitating, “In-trig-in'...” he grumbled, feeling slightly stupid, “Dunno if I'll impress or anything. No idea about any of this whole thing here at all... I'm hearin' that there's betting going on.” Jamarin was, himself, tempted to enter, though he had no idea what the odds were and not much in the way of marks to his name. “As for Jikki... no idea.” he shifted uncomfortably, “He never does nuthin' without me, so I'm thinking it ain't likely that he'll impress without me. I guess.” he shrugged, “I'd probably have to help him anyway if he did, though: He'd be a shitty rider, even on a gold... My brother...” he said, with definite affection left unguarded for the briefest of moments on his narrow, bony face, “Is a fat, lazy, wherry.”
And he loved that dimglow.
“So,” he said, “Yer brothers, they've done this whole thing before, huh?” he said, surprised, “Well, shaff, Kalendol, you'd know more than me.” he said, not sure if he was amused or irritated or some strange mixture of both. He looked at the floor, and at the floor beyond. There was still a lot, and the tables besides...
“Dunno.” he said, not wanting to talk about his childhood, “Jikki an' I wandered, here an' there, doin' odd jobs an' such.” it was true enough, and he at least felt like telling it. “We've only been here two turns. It ain't bad. Lots of ways t' earn a mark or two.”
Kalendol blinked as the other candidate seemed to enjoy her names. 'Too many, nicknames are rather difficult.' She thought to herself and then looked at him as he went on to describe how his brother didn't have such bad nicknames. And that his nickname was "Jam" to which he was not, because he couldn't fit in a jar. Kalendol's eyes widened at this comment and without even thinking her lips parted in laughter, which she hid by placing her wrist up against her lips, her soapy cloth dangling from her hand as her eyes watered and she looked at the boy. Once she'd calmed down somewhat, the red head smiled, tilting her head and then closed her eyes, "Well, if it's alright with you, I'ma call you Min. I like Min. And since you don't like Jam, and I don't like 'Rin', I shall combine the 'M' and the 'in' sounds and create, Min." Kalendol giggled. It sounded very masculine to her.
The girl noticed her hair had fallen out a bit and carefully she took off her black cap, removing her hair's binding to let it fall temporarily, it reached the floor around her in a cascade and she sighed heavily, regarding him with a cocked eyebrow, "I don't s'pose you can braid hair, eh?" She laughed before her thin fingers went to work plaiting the hair and then once again binding it tightly atop her head. She shoved her cap down over the horrid red curls and grinned brilliantly at Jamarin for a moment, uncertain what to say exactly, but clearly enjoying his company.
Then she frowned, and her brows creased slightly, her pink lips pursing carefully as the other candidate stumbled over the word 'intriguing'. 'Oh dear, I hope I didn't make him feel...' She thought momentarily and then grinned a little more, "I think you'll impress. I'm sure you'll make a good rider." Kalendol nodded her head eagerly. After all, the dragonets surely could tell that Jamarin seemed like a hard worker. "Your brother probably will too, once he's a partner to a dragon, 'course." She giggled and then blushed brightly as she went back to scrubbing, embarrassed with herself at this point.
"They have. Though, we didn't really get alon' too well. So, they never shared this stuff with me. I'm completely in the dark with this stuff. I mean, my brothers told me some things..." She sighed. Kalendol didn't like talking about her relationship with her brothers. "I'm a lot younger than them, so..." She shrugged a little.
As Jamarin brushed off the topic of his past, the girl took a hint and grinned a little, "I've been here maybe a sevenday, so you're ahead of me." She giggled hesitantly, and then looked at the rows of tables.

Jamarin couldn't help but grin a little at her laughter. Since he hadn't done anything dim to warrant it, it was probably a good thing. Nothing to get pissed over, nothing to punch anybody over, and besides she wasn't the sort of person you punched.
Still, his face was not built for grinning. “Not sure how ya got 'Min' out of that...” he said. He wasn't sure whether to let her: he actually didn't like it... but... It was better than Jam. “Well, we can try it for a little, see how it sounds.” he said, half grudgingly, “But, uh, don't go spreadin' that name around.”
He blinked. Could he braid hair?! What a strange question. “Er. No.” he said. He'd always kept his hair short, even back at the farm. Long hair got in the way a lot, and one of his cousins had gotten it caught in a cartwheel and died. Even his mother – shards, it had been a while since he'd thought of the woman – had had short hair.
That and hair fetched a good price sometimes, when wig makers were buying. Traders would take it when they had a particular customer in mind, and the extra marks or goods had been handy at the cothold. And, when he'd been holdless, there'd been no point to long hair anyway. “Never had long hair, or sisters.” He took a brief break to watch her plait it, impressed, “That looks pretty shaffing com'plicated.” he commented.
Jamarin shrugged at her next comment. “Maybe.” he said, “Maybe not. Either way, I ain't sittin' on my a**. Did you hear? In th' other weyrs they pamper their dragons.” he shook his head, “I'd be a terrible rider there. Jikki'd like it though.” he smirked, thinking. Oh yes, Jikkiri would love getting all that attention and appreciation. He'd do about the absolute minimum of work required of him, too.
“I bet you'd be a good rider.” he commented abruptly, “You came all the way from a Malvren hold, so you've got something special in ya. You think you'll impress?” he asked. Well, she'd asked, so he figured he should too.
“An' I wouldn't say that. Jikki and I spend most of our time in th' lower caverns, not up here with the dragons. I know a bit about whers, though.” He thought for a moment. “Never seen a clutch o' theirs, come to think of it.”
They had moved to another section of the floor – between the two of them, the floor would be clean enough to eat off of... probably cleaner than the tables, and definitely cleaner than the chairs.
“Huh.” he said, shrugging at her description of her brothers. Shrugging seemed to be the teenager's main method of expression, though – to be truthful – he wasn't sure what else to do besides growl and punch. This was completely new territory here. “Well, they're wherries.” he said, dismissively, “Pretty simple, that.” He went quiet as he scrubbed at a particularly difficult patch of floor. He didn't want to know what half of this stuff was, and he'd seen some pretty filthy things in his life.
“So. Yer a tanner. What's that like?” he asked. Even he could tell that talking about her brothers was not a subject she liked, and he could respect that. He didn't want to talk about his family either... aside from Jikki. But Jikkiri had always been different.
The girl smiled slowly as he opted to 'try' the name out. That suited her fancy, and the fact that he didn't want her sharing that private name was even better. "Good, it'll just be our private secret." She smiled sweetly and then went back to her work. It did not surprise her when the boy claimed he couldn't plait hair, after all, he seemed the type to like his hair shaggy and short. Part of his appeal to the hazel eyed red head. Kalendol's brother, Jeen, had requested she cut her hair so he could get something off of a trader. Naturally, he liked the item, but Kalendol's father had said no, wanting her to keep her usual girly hairdo.
As the topic continued onwards, she mused lightly, smiling, "It's not so hard, once ya get used to it." Oh goodness, was that a half drawl? Maybe Jamarin's voice was rubbing off on her. He certainly did have an accent of sorts. She looked down at her rawhide gloved hands and smiled at the chewed on fingernails, which had been cleaned thanks to the soapy water. Shaking her head, she glanced briefly at the boy as he commented on his making a good rider or not. "Oh, I'm sure you wouldn't. You seem a very hard working man." She smiled, trying her best to be friendly.
Kalendol was finding this chat difficult on her though. She didn't have many long conversations, this could definitely tie as her first experience, next to Vosin who'd practically cornered the poor seventeen turn old in the cafeteria. They'd mainly talked about how Kalendol was so different. But it'd been polite at the very least. Glancing towards the boy now, her grin faltered slightly, "Oh, I have heard of that. If you're brother would be content there, whereas you wouldn't be, wouldn't that put a strain on your relationship?" Genuine concern flashed in her eyes as she looked him over, searching his face.
The teen blushed bright red as the boy complimented her. "I don't know if I'll impress or not. The track record doesn't seem too well. Maybe my family is not meant to impress dragonets." She shrugged a little, as though it didn't matter, though hidden within her hazel eyes was doubt, worry, and a series of other emotions which made her sigh.
"I met a man with a wher, she was so suspicious of everything. Perhaps if you don't succeed in impressing dragonets, whers could be your calling?" She wasn't accustomed to many things about whers, and wasn't sure if there was a specific age limit to impressing them. But it seemed a good enough idea in her opinion. And then again, maybe she was just spouting nonsense.
As the pair moved to another section of the floor, Kalendol found her stomach doing somersaults, this area was where she usually ate, near the corner away from most. As she stared at the gunk on the floor, she determined she would never eat in the dining hall again. Looking at the boy, she smiled slowly, "Agreed."
"Aye, I'm a tanner apprentice, it's quite fun really." Kalendol chuckled a little as she looked at the gloves, "There wasn't always a lot of money, but da was rather smart. I made these boots a long time ago, and he made me the gloves just before I came here to Benden." She grinned as she talked about the tanning craft. How they form leather and various other things. She talked about how she'd had to make a twenty-five set of some weird contraption out of leather for a client in a beastcraft. It was somewhat dull if truth be told, but to her, her eyes lit up in excitement as she spoke of it. "How bout you, any special skills?" She smiled, looking at him carefully.

Jamarin paused in his scrubbing, then shrugged. “Honestly? Jikki's happy anywhere.” he said, “He'd just be especial' happy if he didn't have to do nuthin.” Jamarin nodded, “Me, I gotta be doin' stuff.”
As they moved on, and she talked about Tannercraft, Jamarin found it interesting: it sounded like skilled labor even he could do, something that was useful everywhere for everybody.
“Wha, me?” he said, lightly, “Workin' my a** off is a skill. I lift stuff, and I put stuff down, and I don't stop 'til the day's done.” he looked back at her, stretching his spine a little, “I wanna hear more about that yer tannercraft. What'd they need twenty-five of that stuff for, anyhow?”
And they talked until the chores were done. And had fun. Then they said goodbye.
Time skip
The feast had been wonderful; honestly Kalendol had not wanted it to end. Kynigoth seemed to have enjoyed it too, and admittedly she had been a handful, forcing everyone to share their secrets. The teenager had said sorry to countless people. But one thing was still bugging her. When Kynigoth had impressed, she had said something remarkable. And it made no sense to Kalendol. But she would not try to gouge her way I to her friends reasons. That was his business, not hers. Yet, Kalendol had been attracted to the boy she believed Jamarin was, and knowing he was a girl was messing with her mind.
Kynigoth was currently curled up with her head on Kalendol's lap, humming happily as the girl scratched her chin carefully. She rather enjoyed this touch.

mused Atibonth,
“You know what, lets just... take a walk.” said Jamarin. It was odd to have this thoughtful, intelligent thing in his mind, and he didn't think he would be used to beeing... smart... ish.
Atibonth thought for a moment,
“We're taking a walk, Atibonth.” he snapped, walking out the door.
said the dragon mildly, trotting next to Jamarin. They were quiet for a moment.
“Sorry.” grumbled Jamarin.
said Atibonth, giving him a dragonic smile... If he hadn't wanted someone tough and with direction, he would not have chosen Jamarin. He had known what he was doing.
He sniffed the air.
said Atibonth,
“Lets go say hi.” interrupted Jamarin, poking his head into Kalendol's room. “Hey?”
said the blue cheerfully, and perhaps a little pleased. He did, after all, know the deep reasons behind Jamarin's decision, and he approved.
He moved into the room ahead of Jamarin. he said, looking at his clutchmate with mild eyes.
Suddenly a growling rumble arose from the hatchling and her head lifted from her's lap. <Mine, Atibonth and his fast approach.> The dragonet chirped and then her head turned towards the door as the males approached. At Atibonth she allowed a soft hum to fill the air. <Not at all Atibonth. Do come in with yours. Have you secrets to share?> Kynigoth absolutely adored secrets. As she cast her calm gaze to the friend of her rider her body seemed to untangle itself from the girl and a knowing smirk appeared along her elongated maw.
"Jamarin! Hey, hello to yours as well. I am well, you?" The weyrling giggled as she rose to her feet and beckoned the boys in with a wave of her hand. "Yes please come in. You'll have to forgive Kynigoth, I'm sure she is sorry about the pants delima as well, right. Mine?" Kalendol's hazel eyes dropped to her dragonet with absolute tenderness.
<I do not feel contrite about my actions. I just had to find his secret, Mine.> The green chortled and shrugged, if dragons shrug. She blinked to her clutchmate with a grin, <Surely, Atibonth, you hold me no ill will for satisfying my curiosity of Yours?>
Dismay crossed Kalendol's features and she looked at Jamarin with an apologetic smile. "I figured you would be with Jikkiri and His. Have you had a disagreement?" Concern filled her eyes as she looked at him, cocking her head even as Kynigoth did.

asked Atibonth, surprised, He had a sense of what she might mean, and...
he said serenely,
Jamarin, however, was not so sure. He gave the green a wary look as he stepped in through the door. She'd better not try that again... he thought. That stunt of hers had almost revealed more than he wanted to admit himself, and it had prevented him from going to Jikkiri's aid. Who cared that his brother was fine? He had been in danger, and little Kyni-a** there had held Jamarin back...
remined Atibonth. He watched the green pair mildly – as he did most things – and tilted his head at her question.
“No...” said Jamarin, wondering if it was a mistake to have dropped in. He'd thought it was a good idea, he'd wanted to say hi to Kalendol, but if she was going to bring up Jikki, right now. “We're fine... 's all fine...” he mumbled, “Just takin' a walk, is all.”
The pale green dragonet blinked at the blue and cocked her head, <It is best to ask forgiveness than permission. And it doesn't matter that we have only been hatched a few hours. Secrets pour in nonstop for dragons.> the green crooned as she looked to Kalendol and her wings stretched upwards. More privately she hummed to her rider <Mine, perhaps other talk now?>
Kalendol nodded then smiled, "A walk? That sounds lovely." The teen smiled and then looked at Jamarin carefully. "I am sorry for my question." She bit her lip and then she tried to think of something to say. "Cant sleep either?" Kalendol had tried but she had found it hard to come about.
