Midagi Royale surveyed the land before him, thoughtfully. He was perched on something that could be called a cliff. Or it could have been called a steep hill. At the moment, he was less concerned with the technicalities as he was with the land at the base of the cliff/hill. There were plenty of trees to hide one’s enemy, but the particular spot that he was eyeing rested a good distance away from said trees. It was something of a clearing, not quite a meadow unless one counted a garden of rocks and boulders a meadow. He did not. He barely considered it a garden. It was, however, nearly perfect for his desires. A steady river ran along one side of it, and the other was pressed up against the cliffs/steep hills. It would be a simple matter to clear out the bushes that would obscure any views. Yes, this spot was nearly perfect for what he had planned.

Midagi was not a creature of simple tastes, and he was full well aware of this. He knew what he wanted, and he had spent weeks, months even, planning on how best to achieve his goal. Because he most certainly would achieve his goal. Failure was a word that did not apply to Midagi Royale. He simply would not allow it. Failure was for lesser creatures, not one of his nobility. And it was a sign of that nobility that Midagi craved.

He had spent years observing other herds, only to learn that he did not care for the idea of a herd of his own. In some, the leader was questioned at every step. He had no patience for such disobedience. In other herds, the leader was obeyed without hesitation. In those herds, there was always an undercurrent of fear that made him believe the leader was not quite as benevolent as he might like. Ruling with fear was also not to his tastes. There was always the third type of herd, where the leader was obeyed completely not out of fear but out of trust and respect. Midagi was no fool. He knew how long such achievements must have taken. One did not demand respect, one earned it. And, as with being questioned every step of the way, he did not have the patience or temperament for such an endeavor.

So, he had turned his attention away from his fellow soquili and onto the humans, wondering how they displayed status among their own herds. The answer had come fairly quickly. Home and possessions. Humans seemed to feel the need to collect items. They put up totems and odd cone like things in which they lived. The larger, nicer of these things often depicted someone who was higher in the chain of command than others.

This was what he decided he needed. A home that would show how brilliant and awe inspiring he was. He wouldn’t settle for a meadow under the stars, or some dank, stuffy cave. Oh no. He would build himself a monument in which he could live. He wouldn’t choose something as flimsy as the skins and fabric that humans did. He would choose stone. And he knew just how to go about it. First, he needed a location, which, at long last, he had found. Of course, he had never thought to take into consideration neighbors.

Nova was stalking. That’s what Mommy called it. Mommy said it was a good thing to do. Daddy didn’t seem so sure, but he hadn’t told her not to do it, only to be careful. So she was as careful as she could be. She crouched low in the grass and kept her eyes trained on her target and her ears perked forward for any hint of sound that would warn her that she’d been found. Now, she knew how her older sisters or mommy would react to being found. They’d jump out and declare themselves. Maybe even pick a fight or do something else that would scare daddy. But little Nova knew better. She knew how tiny she was, and she didn’t much want to be trampled.

Not that her current target could trample her, of course. It was just a cricket. She was actually hoping she could herd it back to the little clearing where her mommy, daddy and brother were. When she had left, Mommy and Daddy had been sleeping while Grimm, Daddy’s special friend, was keeping Wolfgang busy. She had slipped away all sneaky like when she had heard the cricket chirping. She wanted to bring it to Grimm as a gift. She thought he might like that.

Midagi worked tirelessly for at least an hour, clearing the smaller stones out of the area that would be the foundation of his home. He nosed them along or rolled them with his hooves, careful not to kick them somewhere he wouldn’t be able to get to them again. He would, after all, need those in order to build his home. What had the humans called it? Oh, yes, his stone teepee. But that would come after he had managed to clear the space. Next, he would build walls to circle the stone teepee, giving it a certain amount of protection. The walls would be tall. He’d have to make sure he left an opening so he could get in and out, of course. Though…

Now that he thought about it, how was he going to manage to protect that opening. He paused in the process of fighting a particularly large boulder as he pondered that. Once the stones were where he wanted them, he wasn’t going to be able to move them again. That was the point of building with rocks and boulders, after all. He wanted something that would last. Something that couldn’t be knocked down or destroyed easily. That didn’t really leave a whole lot of room for doors… Of course! Doors! He continued struggling with the boulder, satisfied that that issue was resolved. He’d figure out how to go about building a door later.

Her ears perked when she heard the sound of… was that… grunting? Distracted from her pursuit of the cricket, she crept through the grass until she reached a rocky area. Then she hesitated and peered around the boulders. When she saw the much larger stallion fighting with an even bigger rock, she froze, confused. Was the rock attacking him? Or was he attacking the rock? Did he see things like daddy?

Midagi threw his whole weight into trying to budge the boulder. It was right in the center of what was going to be the main living area. Once he managed to get his home built up. But for some reason it was refusing to budge. Maybe because it was bigger than he was. At least the part of it that he could see. He pulled back to try and dig at the base of it to see how far down it went.

Nova watched as he started to dig around the base of the large rock. Maybe he didn’t see things like her daddy did, but he certainly did behave oddly. Had he lost something? Oh! Or maybe he was trying to dig out a new home, like Grimm did sometimes. But Grimm was a bunny. This fellow was clearly a horse. He was a big one, like Daddy and her older sisters, not a little one like mommy or her or her brother. That wasn’t really important right now, though. He wasn’t a bunny, so why would he be trying to dig a hole? She crept forward a bit more, hoping that a closer look might provide her with clearer answers. Her curiosity was perked.

After a few minutes of stubborn digging, Midagi finally called it quits. At least for the moment. It was time to retreat and regroup. This was obviously not working the way he would like. Maybe he should consider calling in reinforcements? This would certainly go faster if he had some help. But who could he call on? He had just recently arrived in this area. It wasn’t as though he was familiar with any other families or herds that might live in the area. For all he knew, there were no other soquili in this area. Before this moment, he would have said that he preferred it that way. But now that he was faced with a potentially futile, tedious task… maybe he should explore the area a bit more thoroughly to see if there were any others around. Then again, on the other hoof, what if the locals choose to try and drive him out?

Oh! Now he stopped! Nova watched as the stallion seemed to think about his next move. She considered coming out of the bushes to offer him help, but she wasn’t even certain what he was trying to do. Was he just trying to dig a hole? She could certainly help with that. But if he was trying to move the big rock, that wouldn’t work out so well. She knew she was pretty small. She was much, much smaller than her older sisters. She hoped that one day she’d get to be as big as them, but she saw how much smaller mommy was. The only way to know for certain was to ask. But then she had to wonder if that was even a good idea. What if he was a bad person? Daddy was always worried about bad things, though mommy always seemed to think he was overly cautious.

He heaved a heavy sigh. Really, he couldn’t take the risk. Once he had his home built and fortified, he could explore his new territory. But first he needed a base to defend. He had spent too long searching for the perfect place to build. Maybe his neighbors would be friendly and helpful, but there was also the chance that they would be territorial and try to get rid of him. Best to be fully rooted before anyone could try to chase him off. With another sigh, he started digging at the rock again. If he didn’t find the bottom of it soon, he’d just figure out a way to build around it.

Oh! He was digging again. Maybe he was just trying to dig a really deep hole. She could certainly help with that. And he didn’t look scary or mean, so maybe he wasn’t really dangerous. She hesitated another moment before creeping forward quietly. She’d get a bit closer, she decided, before letting him know she was there. And she’d make sure she had a clear escape path first. She paused behind one of the rocks he had rolled out of his way and braced herself for what she was going to do. This would either make her a new friend, or make daddy yell at her. Well, daddy would probably squeak either way. He did that a lot, squeaked in outrage. Or fear. She could never really tell which. Finally, with a quick glance at her best path of escape, she stepped out into the open, bouncing lightly on her hooves. “Hello,” she called.

Midagi nearly jumped out of his scales when a voice called out behind him. He spun on his hooves and lowered his heads, prepared for an attack. And then the curious tone of the voice and the sight before him sank in. Standing at the entrance of his future home was a foal. A very, very tiny little foal, who watched him with a mix of caution and curiosity. She was rather adorable, he realized, with cute little horns and odd markings. What was a foal doing all the way out here, in the middle of nowhere? And far more important, where were her parents? Or was she like him, abandoned as a basket and left to fend for herself. He shook a bit of dirt off his hoof and lifted his head, trying to look nonthreatening “Hello, little one,” he tried to keep his tone gentle, but he really wasn’t accustomed to talking to children.

Nova wrinkled her nose a bit. She knew that tone. She hated that tone. That was the tone adults took when they talked down to children, when they thought foals were too stupid to understand “grown up” things. Mommy and Daddy never took that tone with her or her sisters or brother. Daddy usually had a panicky tone, and Mommy always spoke to them as if they were little adults. Sometimes Nova didn’t understand what Mommy was talking about, but she liked that Mommy didn’t take that tone. Akis took that tone sometimes, but that was because she was a big sister. At least, that was what Nova thought.

Midagi saw the face the filly was making and faltered. Clearly he had done something wrong, but he couldn’t figure out what. Was it because his hooves were dirty? He glanced down at them and cringed at the mud that caked on them. Well, there wasn’t much he could do about that. The filly wasn’t running, so maybe she just didn’t like mud. “Who are you?” he asked, then suppressed another cringe as he realized how harsh that question sounded. This was why he didn’t deal with foals very often. He always messed it up somehow. Next she was going to start crying. Spirits, please don’t let her start crying.

Nova considered not answering. If he was going to take that tone with her, then she didn’t want to talk to him. But she was nicer than him. Mommy taught her not to sink to anyone’s level, and walking away counts as sinking, doesn’t it? Or did she mean that she shouldn’t be as short as anyone else? If that was what Mommy meant, then Nova wasn’t sure how she was supposed to do that. It wasn’t like there were many people who were smaller than her. At least she hadn’t met any. Her brother was about the same size as her. Was that what mommy had meant? Well, either way, she wasn’t going to be rude. Mommy said that was bad, and that Nova understood. “I’m Nova. Who are you?” she asked. Hey, just because she had to be polite didn’t mean she had to be nice.
