There was no one he could ask. In fact, there was no one that Alistaire even really talked to anymore, so his choices were slim and his resolve was slipping. Still, at the very least, there was one person that fit the bill, but it would take a little time for him to actually work up the nerve to ask her.

He finally sent her a text early one morning:

Text to Molly Finn:

Are you free today, Miss Finn? I have something to ask of you.

Molly was sitting at her desk, in her room, writing down her latest journal entry for the latest clover she had pressed into her book, when her phone went off. She glanced at it momentarily, set her pen down, and then finally pulled up the message. She squealed.

She squealed like a teen who had just one back stage passes to a One Direction concert.

Oh my gosh.

Molly whipped open a 'reply' so fast, and made many spelling errors she had to go back and correct as she typed out a message back to Alistaire.

Text to Alistaire:

Yes! I am! I'm in my room, 202, if you'd like to meet me there! Or I can meet you elsewhere! Whatever works for you!

He had the feeling he was going to regret this; but Molly Finn at least knew a little bit about him, more so than anyone else on the island except for Harland, who knew practically everything, and Ian, who liked to think he knew everything. And she was also relatively non-judgmental, though Alistaire couldn't help but have his doubts about her abilities to keep things quiet. She was just so naive sometimes, after all.

With a sigh, however, Alistaire slid off of his bed, where he'd been sitting, and exited his room (his, not Harland's, because Harland was busy on duty and Alistaire had been debating taking a nap), making his way down the dormitory hallway toward the staircase at the end. Up on the second floor, her room was on the opposite end (Alistaire's room was in the higher numbers, which meant he was closer to that side of the hall), and it took him several minutes to get to her room.

Then he stood outside and hesitated for a good five minutes before finally lifting a gloved hand to knock.

The entire time Alistaire took to get to her room, including just standing in front of her door, Molly had been staring at her phone.

Waiting.

She didn't know if he was coming to her room or not! So she sat still at her desk and stared intently at her phone until she was a knock. "Ah!" She leapt out of her seat, knocking the chair over with a noisy clatter. "Oh goodness!" She righted the chair, looked back at her phone, and then skittered over to the door. "Coming!" She cried, and then threw the door open as quickly as possible.

She stared, with wide eyes at the man on the other side for a long moment before it registered.

"Alistaire!" Molly exclaimed. "Oh my gosh, hello! I didn't know you were coming here so I didn't start preparing tea--AH!" Molly leapt away from the door to run to her little kitchenette, getting her tea kettle and filling it with water. "Please, come in!" She cried over her shoulder. "Make yourself at home!"

There was a crash from behind the door; Alistaire leaned back away from it, a look of surprise on his face that was accompanied by a frown of confusion. He almost turned and walked away, but then the door was flung open, and Molly's bright, wide-eyed face appeared, mouth slightly agape.

"Good morning, Miss Finn," Alistaire said, the corners of his lips quirking upwards in a faint smile. "I thought it more prudent to merely come straight away instead of answering the text. I don't particularly like texting as it is, anyway."

He stepped into the room, adjusting his tie as he did so and smoothing his gloved hands down the front of his vest. Molly's room was much larger than his own, which made him slightly envious; but a few more months of hard work and he would be able to get his own, or at least that was the plan.

Alistaire chose to sit on the edge of the couch, leaning back and crossing one leg over the other. He looked very out of place in such a warmly decorated room as he cast a glance towards the redheaded woman.

"Gooooooooood morning!" Molly replied in a bit of a sing song as she placed the kettle onto the hot plate and let it heat. In the meantime, she went about preparing a tray, filling it with different kinds of teas, some mugs, sugar, creamer, spoons, and some chocolate covered biscuit cookies. She then took the tray over to the little coffee table, and closed the door on her way by with a foot. She placed the tray on the table, and offered a smile to the man awkwardly sitting on her couch.

"Of course!" She replied, and nodded her head a bit. "In just a moment I'll have--" The kettle went off, and Molly was gone again to go get it. She came back a few moments later with the kettle, and took a seat on the other end of the couch. She then got to work filling both the mugs with hot water, and after she was done placed the kettle on a pot warmer on the table, and then made a motion to the tray. "Please, help yourself!"

She didn't get to have company over often, much less someone elusive like Alistaire.

Molly was as chipper as ever. Alistaire watched her somewhat warily as she moved about the kitchenette, putting things on trays, the clatter of silverware and cups and saucers, the rustle of packages being open. After a few moments she came over to where he was sitting and sat near him, though thankfully not directly next to him.

"Thank you," Alistaire said, and reached out to first pick his tea - something dark and vaguely spicy - dipping the little bag into the hot water and adding a few dabs of creamer, though no sugar. He picked up the mug and leaned back, taking a delicate sip and waving a gloved hand to dispel some of the steam.

There was a long, somewhat awkward pause. He had no idea how to go about this conversation, let alone start it.

"How have you been faring, Miss Finn?" Alistaire asked finally, because general conversation was better than nothing at this point, and he was still trying to figure out how to word what he needed to and simultaneously ignore Grimshaw's rough growls of laughter in his head.

"You're most welcome!" Molly went about prepping her cup too, dropping in a random tea bag and placing sugar, creamer, and a bit of honey into her mug. Admittedly, she was curious as to what Alistaire, of all people, could want to see her about. She was curious, yes, but she wasn't at all in a hurry, and the curiosity wasn't so bad that she wouldn't just simply enjoy having his company. Company was nice, after all!

"Oh! Um, I'm well! Thank you for asking!" Actually, she had a few things eating away at her on the back burner, but after some recent events, she had gotten better at pushing that stuff back and...not letting it affect her as much. "Congratulations on your promotion!" She chirped, giving him a fox eyed smile. "Word travels through the grape vine!" She nodded her head a bit, and then tilted it, holding her steaming mug between her hands. "How have you been?"

Alistaire had learned very quickly that he was not good at casual conversation, as clearly evidenced by his awkward, stuttering gestures and his stiff manner of speaking. He took another swallow of his tea, his eyes flickering as the heat of the liquid burned its way down his throat.

"Thank you," he said again, breathing in the scent of his tea. "I have also transferred to the Life Division, which I find is a much better fit for both my abilities and my intelligence. The Sun Division lacked qualities that I find appealing, after all."

He took another sip, and then a breath, because she'd asked him how he was, and it was a very loaded question. Alistaire couldn't quite look directly at her, staring fixedly instead at some fixed point across the room.

"I have been...reasonably well," he said slowly, cautiously. "That is...well, that is perhaps one of the reasons why I wished to speak with you today."

There was another pause and no further explanation.

"...Oh?" Molly sat up a bit straighter. "Oh...wow! Um...congratulations too...!?" She uttered, not quite sure what the proper thing to say was for a division transfer. She nodded her head regardless, curls bouncing. "I think it's important to feel at home in your division, so if you feel more comfortable in Life, then that's great!"

Molly politely stared at Alistaire, since they were conversing, even as he looked elsewhere. She continued to peer at him even over the rim of her mug as she took a sip of her tea.

Admittedly...he said he was well, and that was great...but Molly was confused as to why he needed to talk to her about...being well. She blinked and stared at him. Didn't people come to talk when they weren't...doing well? Huh.

"Oh...! Of course...!" She stared at him, wide eyed and waiting. "Please tell me why you are...well?"

Alistaire's eyes slid briefly over to where Molly sat, wide-eyed and cheerful, her curls framing her freckled face, and a flicker of exasperation passed across his expression, because she was just so damn cheerful. But with Molly it was less of a problem, less of an annoyance, because it wasn't an act; she just genuinely was that positive all the time.

How on earth could someone be that positive all the time.

He looked away from her and kept focusing on the spot across the room; more specifically, the wall just beside the door, one of Alistaire's gloved fingers absently tapping against the side of his mug. Words tumbled through his mind; he couldn't figure out how to sort through them properly, and his face steadily grew redder, a dull flush spreading over his cheeks.

"Well, I..." Another pause. This was damn hard. He tried not to show it.

"I...recent events have occurred..."

That was an understatement, if any.

"...and I am in need of..."

Pause.

"...some advice."

Pause.

"From you."

Pause. His face was crimson now. He stared resolutely at the wall, fingers clenched around the handle of his tea mug.

"Regarding...relationships."

Alistaire had Molly's attention before, but with his...out of the usual behavior, he had it even more so. Molly was sitting up straighter with every phrase Alistaire uttered, and the mug left her lips to instead rest on her lap. If it was possible her eyes had gotten more wide, and she looked every bit as alert and attentive as a faithful dog.

She then blinked, looking confused for a moment.

Wait...Alistaire was asking for relationship advice......from her?

She looked at him a bit like a deer in the headlights, wondering what on earth possessed him to think she'd be qualified to help someone as smart as him.

But, of course, in good ol' Molly fashion:

"Of course!" She exclaimed. "I'll do whatever I can to help!"

This was simultaneously immensely embarrassing and immensely frustrating. Alistaire was staring so resolutely at the wall that it was somewhat surprising a whole hadn't been burned into it. Molly at least was relatively nonjudgmental, which meant that he could trust her not to laugh at him, and that was ninety percent of the reason he had come to her in the first place.

That, and she was the only person he thought might able to help. He certainly wasn't going to Ian.

"Supposing," said Alistaire slowly, his face still red. He took another sip of his tea. "Supposing that...I think that perhaps...that is to say..."

Awkward. He gritted his teeth together.

"Supposing that there is someone in my life that I wish to...be more...affectionate with," Alistaire finally ground out, hating the way he flushed. "Hypothetically speaking, if there was someone to whom I wished to be...more close to...how would I...that is to say, how does one...go about accomplishing that."

Theeeeeeeen Alistaire started to lose Molly a bit. He was losing her with all that...supposing he was doing. Wow. That was a lot of pre-statements to get into this topic. Molly wasn't even sure when it was going to be begin. She was starting to look lost again, until the trainee finally got to the point, and it was something she could latch onto. "Oh!" Molly blinked again, and her brows knitted.

"Ah...well...how do you wish to be...more close to this person...?" She asked. "If you don't mind me asking..." She grinned at him sheepishly. "It's just...um...it's...vague...? I'm sorry!"

Apparently being vague wasn't going to work. Alistaire silently cursed himself and lowered his mug, his hands starting to shake from the effort of keeping himself calm. He set the cup down on the table and then tugged absently at his gloves, trying to hide the way that his fingers trembled.

"I mean..." He struggled hard to form the words, his face feeling hot. "Romantically."

There, he'd said it. Alistaire was still looking away from Molly as he muttered, "I wish to become more romantically affectionate towards someone, and I am unsure how to go about it."
