Vassilis stood on a grassy patch near the woods. It was one of the few green patches left in a sea of yellow and brown and he wanted to know why. He scraped at the blades of greenery with his pale paws until he dug them up. He blinked and the motion was like a wave. First the two eyes on his face blinked followed closely by two on either shoulder, and then by the twelve located on his wings. It was dirt. Just like what was under everything else out here. All eighteen of his eyes blinked at once and then narrowed as the colt frowned. Why were these bits alive when everything else was dying. That wasn't right. It didn't make sense.
He glanced off to the side where his sister was. She was no older than he was, but he hoped that maybe she would have some information. Too young to fully understand the concept of seasons and weather, Vassilis believed if they could learn what had left this bit alive then it was possible that he could find a way to save the rest of it.
"Diantha!" He called flaring out his wings as wide as they could go to make himself stand out more. The motion gave him vertigo for a moment but he snapped out of it quickly enough. "Come help!"

Harrison was bored. It was that simple. He'd had no company in his garden for some time now. It felt like it had been hours and he couldn't stand for it. In reality it had been nearly a week since he had crossed paths with another soul but the complexities of time keeping were often lost on the odd creature. He had started wandering minutes ago, and somehow he had crossed the rather absurd length from his garden in the center of the forest to the plains outside of the forest. How peculiar.
Harrison paused at the border of the trees and looked out into the great empty space. Everything was quite dead out here whereas everything in the forest was just coming to the height of it's life. The event was always short lived. The leaves turned brilliant shades of gold, red, and orange... before finding that they had nothing more to live for and falling to their deaths beneath his mismatched feet. They made pleasant crunching sounds as they were stepped on though, so perhaps they were not dead but becoming part of a tiny, crunchy orchestra. He smiled at the thought, it was more pleasant than everything dying, that was certain.
He turned to head back into the woods to began the long trek back to his garden (it would take at least a year) when something caught his eyes. Something was moving out in the browned grass. Something very green and rather fluffy. Intrigued he began his trotting approach.

Diantha was not so outgoing as her brother, but that did not make her care any less for him. She was glad to spend time with him out in the woods, away from the watchful gaze of their mother for once. It wasn't too long ago that their mom hadn't wanted to let them out of her sight. Diantha felt proud to have enough trust to be able to spend some time away from her every now and then. It gave her time to practice flying without the well-meaning, but sometimes embarrassing comments. It was still hard for her to move all eight of her wings at once and not get them tangled up, and sometimes she secretly wondered if she had too many wings to be able to fly at all.
She skidded to a stop from another bout of running and flapping when she heard her brother calling out for her. She blinked over with her two eyes, seeing him examining... grass? What did he need help with for something as normal as grass?
As she trotted over, she paid more attention to the surroundings. Most of the grass was dead, but Vassilis had found some that looked as green as in summer. "What is going on?" she asked, curious.

Vassilis smiled as his sister approached and relaxed his wings. He folded them into his sides and cringed as he started seeing spots. It wasn't easy seeing when you were getting signals from so many places. He shifted his wings slightly and closed every eye on his wings before resettling them. It was easier to focus on what was in front of him then, even if he was seeing her from several angles.
"This grass is alive." He said firmly when prompted. He tapped it with a paw. "This grass is dead." He brushed a different paw over the brittle, dry blades that surrounded the healthy patch. "Why is that?" He looked at his sister somewhat expectantly. She hadn't always seemed to crave to poke around everything like Vassilis did but she had always seemed just a bit brighter than he was. Okay, a lot brighter. Curiosity he had in abundance. Intelligence he seemed to lack.

Two. Two?! Harrison hadn't even made it halfway to the multi-winged fluffy one when a second had appeared. This one was not all feathers. This one was made up of bat parts and sunsets. They were strange looking critters but he could tell what they were. They were foals! Harrison liked foals! Foals liked his garden and they were happy to keep him company for hours, sometimes even entire minutes!
Harrison pawed his cloven hoof against the ground as he watched the pair for a moment. He should go say hello rather than waiting for them to come to him. Foals could ignore everything around them and just play for an eternity. Harrison didn't want to wait. Twitching his long ears he cantered forward, putting on a wide smile.
"Hello, hello, hello!" He called cheerfully to the pair. "Good night! How are you?"

Diantha frowned immediately upon seeing the stranger approaching. Their mother had warned them about the potential danger of strangers, and Diantha remembered what she said about looking for sharp teeth and wicked expressions. She didn't see any sharp teeth on this one, but she still instinctively put herself between him and her brother.
"It's not night," she said warily, glancing up at the blue skies overhead. Was there something wrong with him, or was he just stupid?

Vassilis was more than happy to stay behind his sister when the stranger approached. He had little idea what was going on but he remembered that there mother didn't like them speaking to strangers. She said they could be dangerous. If Diantha didn't like him then he was probably dangerous even if he didn't look it. He mostly looked weird. He had giant ears at least six times the size of Vassilis's own and between them a large cloth hat sat and wobbled as the stallion moved.
"It's just day." He supplied at his sister's contradiction of the stallion's greeting. "Good day!" He said cheerfully before remembering that he was probably supposed to be acting just as suspicious as Diantha. He ducked his head behind his wings at the realization. "Oops..."

Oh, this was less good. These children didn't seem to want him around. He decided that this was probably because they didn't know him. He could fix that just like he could fix getting the time wrong. He glanced at the sky, he had been so certain that it was night but he was often wrong about these things.
"Good day!" He amended with an even wider grin than before. "I am Harrison! Son of the Hares! Pleased to meet you this nigh-DAY!" He came to a stop near to the children and continued to smile at them. They were quite interesting to look at with their vibrant colors and many wings. They also seemed to stand on paws rather then hooves. And here he'd been thinking that they would find his look odd. They were far stranger than he was!
"Would you like to go and play? I have a garden. It's close."

He didn't really have much of a "wicked expression" either. As young as she was and inexperienced with judging character, Diantha thought that this stranger was just strange, and didn't want to hurt them. When he said that he was the son of hares, she blinked up at his ears. They did look a lot like a rabbit's ears, and as far as she could remember, hares were a type of rabbit.
"Your..." she started, confused. "Your parents were rabbits?" How would that work? She knew that foals came out of baskets, and little else. Rabbits were smaller than baskets, so she didn't see how a rabbit could take care of one. Maybe the rabbits had been given a basket by a soquili mother who didn't want to take care of her children? She ignore the bit about the garden for now. The other things he'd said were much more interesting.

Vassilis peeked around his sister curiously. "I thought he said his parents were hares, Diantha." He offered not finding it as strange as his sister did. He wanted to know more about this garden. "Is it a hare garden?" He asked taking a step around his sister to get a better look. "Is there grass there? Good grass, not like this." He scraped a little of the dried grass up for emphasis.
"Can we go see the garden? He said he's a hare. Hares don't eat meat. Please Diantha." He looked at his sister with pleading eyes. She knew so much more than him and she hadn't mentioned the garden at all. Was there something wrong with it that he hadn't caught on to? He hoped not. He wanted to go and play.

"Rabbits?" Harrison sputtered drawing his head back. Of all the insulting things. "No... Hares!" He smiled at the green child. He'd caught on to it quickly. "My parents were both hares, as you can see." He twitched his long ears back and forth to make a point of it. "And no, we don't eat meat! Nasty stuff. I'm quite partial to a nice bit of mint or clover!" He stood quite proudly at this proclamation as he should. Mint was no easy thing to find he had found but it was quite tasty and smelled wonderful.
"Both of which grow in my garden! We can go see it now and you can play until bedtime! That's hours from now!" The smile had reappeared on his face. It looked like they were beginning to warm up to him. An introduction went quite a long way with people!

Diantha's eyes grew larger at the mention of mint and clover. It was so hard to find anything really good to eat this time of year. Vassilis didn't seem worried, and he really seemed to be friendly and like he was telling them the truth. Maybe he was just a little strange because he was raised by rabbits, or hares as he'd called them.
"Ok... we can go for a while," she decided. "We can bring back some mint for mom." That made it sound better. She was sure that their mom would forgive them for wandering off a little if they could bring her back something good from it.

Vassilis let out a little whoop of joy at his sister's approval. They were going to go and play in the garden where things still grew green. "We should get clover for her too!" Vassilis added. "Clover... mint... and flowers! Nice green things that are still alive!"
He flicked his little tail and pranced closer to the odd stallion, all golden eyes on his body alight. "Can we go now? Right now! I want to see!" He said twitching his wings eagerly. The young colt could hardly stand the anticipation. Bed time was hours away but Vassilis wanted to play for as long as they could so naturally they needed to leave absolutely immediately. They could run there. That would be faster. Flying would be fastest but Vassilis wasn't any good at it and the hare didn't have wings anyway. Could Diantha carry them all? Probably not. She wasn't any bigger than he was even if she did have four sets of wings instead of three.

Harrison was completely over the moon when the little pink filly agreed to go. He wouldn't have to be so alone now, at least not for a while. The little ones could bring a bit of joy back into his garden until they left. "Yes yes, plenty of mint! Enough mint for whole minutes even!" He boasted proudly as the little green one approached him. He seemed almost as excited as Harrison himself was. "And entire fields of little flowers!" He grinned at both the children for a moment before remembering something very important.
"Ah. There is one thing we must do first then we can go play. I have told you that my name is Harrison, son of hares! But what are your names?" He could continue simply calling them children but that seemed quite rude indeed. He'd heard them calling each other something but he hadn't been paying enough attention to quite catch what. "Names and then I will show you the way!"
