Elleth was about ready to drown the archer if he didn't stop whining. Her fingers twitched with the need grab him by the hair and dunk him under the scummy water until he stopped moving. Just when she felt her patience finally run out, she realized that the sound had stopped. That...didn't bode well. Slowly Elleth turned her head to peer over her shoulder. Kovu had stopped several paces back and was staring out into the forest, head tilted and mouth open. His hands were cupped around his ears. Frowning Elleth recalled the first time he'd done that and his reasons why; he was trying to enhance his hearing. Something about sound carrying and echoes. It went over her head.
Suddenly Kovu dropped his strange stance, pulled an arrow out of his quiver, drew his bow and shot at something just within the forest line. A pained screech rose up and suddenly there was a flurry of sounds. High pitched shrieking and a thrum of multitude of feathers brushing against each other that made Elleths teeth ache. The forest seemed to come alive, dark shapes slid out of the wood, the shadows in a whirl of movement. This was it, the creature that she'd been looking for. Not well enough if Kovu had spotted them before her, but that was something she'd address later.
Her breath whistled out of her teeth as he jammed her hand into her pouch, fingers closing on one of the taming gems she'd found. She was going to need all the help possible to make this work. Frowning she let go of the gem, she didn't need it's help for this, and instead pulled out a net. It was a small flimsy thing made more for fishing than catching, but it was all she had. It had to work or she'd pummel the thing into submission with her fists.
She didn't pause to think how badly thought out that plan was.
She tossed the net into the flurry of movement, breaking up the cloud and causing it to scatter back into the shadows. She heard the creatures sounds up until she didn't. The night was silent again in a jarringly sudden moment. Biting her lip she drifted closer to the net, noting how it was shaking and moving as the Drugaur tried to break free. Kovu poked his head up from where he'd submerged himself again, choking on air. His face was scratched up and there was a leech hanging from his jaw, but the archer seemed delighted when he spied the moving net.
"Congrats! Now get that sucker and lets get out of here. I need a bath in clean water pronto."

The Draugur struggled as Elleth hauled the net along, the long sharp talons thankfully too tangled in the criss-crossing ropes to get to her flesh. Up ahead Kovu loped through the swamp, sending up sheets of algae infused water. It seemed as if his second dunk in the sludge had rid him of the urge to stay clean, and replaced it with the need to get out of there as fast as he could. Elleth was careful of where she stepped, knowing that she wouldn't be able to spot the holes in the water now that there were small waves causing ripples everywhere.
Her captive was mostly quiet, if you could ignore the hissing that sounded like an angry wind whistling through bare branches. It had stopped thrashing a few moments ago and Elleth guessed that it was tired, or simply waiting for her to misstep so that it could try for it's freedom again. Her grip reflexively tightened on the rope at the thought of it escaping. Not after how much time she'd spent hunting it down. Sure it had been only two days give or take, but it was her first hunt and she wasn't the most patient person to begin with. She had the scars to back that up.
The sharp twang twang of a bows string brought Elleths attention over to the tree line where Kovu had vanished. Her eyes narrowed until the faint hissing rustle crunch of a spider shell being punctured drifted her way. Her shoulders relaxed minutely, he could handle a few spiders easily. It was the other things in the swamp that could catch him off guard. The bundle at her back bounced against her as she leapt over a fallen log, boots squelching unpleasantly in the muck when she landed, almost slipping as the slick substance gave way under her. A bit of frantic flailing saved her from an ungraceful fall.
That and the hand that reached out to steady her. Elleth would deny the shriek that spilled from her lips and the way she jerked away. "Easy easy it's only me!" Kovu cooed, his other hand reaching out to grab her sleeve, preventing her from almost tumbling into the swamp, again. "There's a good spot to setup camp just over there. Plus some delicious spider bits for shadowy there." The way he said it led Elleth to believe that she'd be the one to feed the thing...and dismember the spider.
Grimacing Elleth followed him to the clearing, which wasn't so much a clearing but a small patch of semi-dry ground ringed by fallen trees and a few spider corpses. The webbing in the area told her that it was probably a good spot to catch prey at. Kovu sat on the closest log, tail instantly curling over his lap. He pulled out his bag which, like hers, was made from oiled leather and everything inside it was covered in either waxed paper or waxed cloth. Anything to keep the contents dry. The face he made at the contents told her that the scummy water had gotten into the bag.
With a sigh Elleth carried her burden to the center of the ring and carefully set it down. The bird, at least that's what she assumed it was, kicked and struggled against the netting once she backed away. It was well tangled and Elleth trusted the net to stay long enough for her to at least start to tame it. From here on out she had no idea what she was doing, but it was a good enough thing to start with the basics. What did you do to something that was unfriendly? Other than kill it, you fed it. Or didn't, but she wanted the thing to live and like her.
She turned to the spider corpses and pulled the small knife that was sheathed at her thigh out. It took some work, finding the right spots in the joints, before she was able to properly joint it. By the time she finished the first her arm ached and her front was covered in goo. Making a face at the smell Elleth dug her fingers into the fine hair covered back and dragged it over to the Draugur. She dropped it and looked at the net, only to find the bird mostly free. The long black feathers kept her from seeing what it really looked like, and only the long legs with the wicked murder talons were really identifiable.
She nudged the spider torso closer to the bird and watched as it awkwardly waddled closer, body held tightly still by the net. It poked at the torso long enough for Elleth to realize that it couldn't eat like it was. She advanced in such a manner that the Draugur knew where she was until she was within touching distance. Carefully she get the net free of it's body, and stroked the inky feathers. The beast rattle hissed at her, spreading it's cloak-like wings over the corpse.
It mantled like the other large birds of prey she'd seen, before it set in on the spider. It didn't try to attack her though, when she went to feed it the other corpses, and she counted that as a plus.
She never noticed the red taming gem that Kovu had stuck on her collar when he'd helped steady her.

Elleth continued to stroke the glossy feathers of the Draugur, watching as it ate. Behind her she could hear Kovu muttering to himself as he cleaned his bow. Finally Elleth let her hand drop and just sat still, waiting. The Draugur seemed docile enough now, but it was still very much a wild creature, and Elleth had no idea on how to even begin the process of training it. She nibbled on her lower lip, mind turning over the various ways one could train a creature.
She first thought of her own training methods and those that had been used on her. But training a person who could think and reason was different than trying to train a creature that could do the same, except they couldn't give their reasoning in words that would make sense to her. She knew the Draugur was intelligent, it had evaded her for quite some time. In fact the only reason why she'd even been able to catch this one was because of Kovu.
This troubled her, this catch wasn't hers, not to keep or train or anything really.
"Kovu." She said, turning to look at the archer. He was sliding a soiled cloth over the upper limb of the longbow, his left hand casually holding the bow upright by the grip. "Hmm?" He hummed, raising his gaze from his work to look at her. "This bird isn't mine." She said, voice soft and almost unsure, "It's yours. You flushed it out and managed to survive the onslaught of the flock."
"And you caught it in the net and fed it. All I did was fire off an arrow into the darkness and took a soak in the swamp water." Came the swift rebuke, "I only came because I wanted to spend time with you. Not because I wanted a- a pet of some sort." Kovu was scowling now.
"So sell it to someone who does. I know I wont be able to train it properly. Look how it's already ignoring me." Elleth said, gesturing towards the Draugur who, since finishing its meal had waddled towards the log that Kovu was sitting on, and perched on the end. It started to preen the moment it felt their gaze fall to it.
Kovu let out a groan, "Fine. Whatever. I'll keep the blasted thing, but we aren't leaving until you catch one for yourself you hear me." A smile curved Elleth's lips, "What if dawn starts approaching?" She asked innocently, "Your new pet wont be happy with you then."
Kovu pulled off a piece of bark and threw it at her, growling when she ducked down to avoid it. "You know what I mean you blasted woman, now shut your trap and get up. The more time we waste gabbing the less time we have before the sun starts to rise."
