Following the path was harder than it seemed, as it looped constantly back into and out of small game trails. The tiny flickering lights of will-o-wisps was a constant danger as well, and Elleth had to force herself to look away and keep walking blindly forward until the urge to turn back abated. She felt naked, having left her blade at home, knowing the such a large weapon would attract unwanted attention and potentially scare away her prey. Instead she had a single knife strapped to her thigh that her mother assured her was combat worthy.
It wasn't that she didn't trust her mother, but...the tiny scrap of metal was hardly combat worthy in her eyes. But she was biased, Elleth fought with a blade that had, at one point in time, been as tall as she was. Still, she fingered the weapon as the brush to her left rustled and a small critter scuttled out. It froze upon spotting her under she shifted, and then it bolted back into the underbrush. Snorting Elleth continued down the trail until the forest gave way to a semi-cleared clearing. Her first step onto what looked like solid ground gave her a foot full of muck and what was probably pond scum.
Elleth gagged at the slimy feeling and pulled her foot out with a sucking sound. She hoped that this wouldn't be the place where she found her prey, and as the night passed, no signs show that it was the right area either. With a disgusted grumble she skirted the edge of the deceitful clearing and headed into the forest this time, rather than sticking to a path. It had been some time since the blood moon first rose, and it was possible that the more normal areas had already been disturbed by those seeking to tame them.
That in mind Elleth decided to try less conventional routes.
