Aeglentine’s frown of concentration pushed her dark eyebrows together, the girl’s whole face tight with tension. The silence was drawn out for a long time, until her opponent drew slightly backwards, the candidate stepping in to keep her distance - when suddenly the boy straightened, feinting towards her side. She tried to parry, but the blade was not there - it was, in fact, touching her chest. The pose held for a moment before he grinned, dropping it and stepping back with a bow.
“And that’s why I’m still stuck here with you” Egg said a little gloomily, leaning the wooden practice sword up against the fence before moving to get a drink of water.
“Oh, cheer up” her opponent - who was at least three turns younger then her - said brightly, leaning his own sword against the fence of the beast pen. “I heard Candidatemaster says you’re doing better even then a month ago, might even make a rider of you yet”
“I suppose” she glanced over at the other young men and women, all practicing the same sort of skills - including the weyrlings who had come unstuck from time. They held a peculiar kind of fascination for the young woman, by dint of their association to a certain gold and her rider.

Shortly after they'd be allowed out of the infirmary, Vosin had noticed groups of people practicing with weapons. After several hours of close watching she'd realized that they were candidates, weyrlings, and yes even riders! The woman had not liked the feeling of helplessness the massacre had left in her mind. She never again wanted to be helpless. This was going to be her ticket. She would protect her queen, for Nersha and Sereth were her leading queen now, and her siblings for her family was precious to her. Thus motivated, Vosin was going to get into these classes some way or another. The woman swung up onto her bronze's neck and gave him an affection slap. Let's go see if we can crash the lesson.Tiaeth rumbled in amusement. His rider had the bit in her teeth again. It would be amusing to see where this went. I will drop you nearby Vos. He moved to the edge of the rim of the weyr he shared with Kelilayth. With a sense of dramatic, Tiaeth flared his wings and leaped into the air. The bronze looped his way lazily through the skies, passing overhead the candidates several times. He chose his spot near the candidates and settled to the ground. Politely he dipped his shoulder for his rider to slide down.Show off, she chuckled at him. He rumbled his laugh. One of use needs to be fancy while you intend to get yourself knocked on your a**. His eyes whirled a happy blue.Vos snorted and slid down his shoulder with practiced ease. She strolled away and toward the candidates with a big grin plastered across her face. "Hello there. Is there room for one more?"

Egg’s heart had leapt into her mouth when she saw the bronze descending, the skin grasped unused in her hand. It took her a moment to remember to close her mouth and not gape, Aeglentine, it makes you look like a witless drudge! The woman was less then a decade older then her - Egg would put her in her mid-twenties - and the smallness of her bronze was fascinating, when it was compared to the others about the Weyr.
She was first to speak up, stepping a little forward and going “Of course there’s room!” before belatedly looking about to see if her sentiment was supported. Not everyone was happy to have those riders about, especially considering how many of them were bronze riders - and thus potential competitors for the next flight, though she was sure none of them would be weyrleader because the weyr would as soon elect one of them as a weyrling.

Vosin was more than willing to stand there for as long as it took for them to invite her to join them. Even if she had to stare at them. Luckily it hadn't come to that and a young woman quickly invited her in. "I thank you. Name's Vosin, rider of Tiaeth. What's yours?" She stepped more into the group so they'd be less likely to try to get her to leave. "Though I have to warn you. I know nothing about this." That was the catch and she hated to say it. They needed to know how utterly ignorant she was. Which was why she was here in the first place. "Would you be so kind as to take me through the basics?" Vos cast a charming smile on the teen. Tiaeth settled himself nearby and watched attentively. He would remind his rider of her most comical moments for as long as he remembered them. And of course he'd need to share them with her siblings tonight too. His eyes whirled an eager blue-green as he waited for them to start.

“Aeglentine” she sketched a brief bow, more fitting to the shavepate candidate in tunic and breeches she was now then the expensively dressed trader girl who had come to the Weyr. She glanced around, looking again for support, and added “um, the teacher’s gone off with a boy who cracked his fingers to the healers, but I can show you where the practice weapons are…?”
She didn’t really want to confess her lack of confidence in actually demonstrating anything to the woman.“Aeglentine” she sketched a brief bow, more fitting to the shavepate candidate in tunic and breeches she was now then the expensively dressed trader girl who had come to the Weyr. Concinnity Blaise I'm so sorry for the wait! Work has squished my muse. crying She arched her brow as the girl mentioned a boy had been injured. If this was just practice and someone had gotten hurt.... that made it dangerous right? Vos tried not to come off too strong. "That would be a good place to start." A quick glance around at the group, showed her all the kids here had mock weapons. To fit in she'd need on too, and it'd help to learn it. "Anything special to picking one out Aeglentine? Interesting name by the way." She grinned, and hoped to get a little bit more out of the girl. A churring sound came from the bronze as he was clearly laughing at his rider. If you poke her Vos she might fall over. He didn't know if the girl was in awe or just shy, but seeing his trying to be friendly was funny. His rider was clearly the oldest of the group and stood out considerably. Tiaeth admired her spirit for doing whatever it took to learn this new skill. She's probably more afraid that your butt was going to land on her flying over like that. She taunted the bronze back. The teen did look a bit nervous. Vos doubted any of the riders would be willing to teach her. At least not until she'd gained a bit of skill at this. Others might think she was trying to take advantage of the smaller kids, but in truth it was their skill levels she was looking at.

“Uhm, I guess it’s just my name” Egg said, feeling more then a little tongue-tied. “Most - I mean, some people, call me Egg if it’s too long. I didn’t catch your name, ma’am?”
Well, it wasn’t sir, definitely (probably? Shards, she had no idea of the right etiquette for several hundred turns ago!).
“I - I guess just something that fits your height” she added, gesturing the way she would take the rider. “They’ve all got metal cores, so it won’t be strange when you pick up a real weapon…? I’m sorry, I’m not very good with them yet, I just want to get into the fifth wing and work with numbers forever…"

"Of course its your name. A good interesting name." It was definitely an interesting name. How the times had changed. What other weird names had cropped up? "Egg? Well alright then. That's certainly easy to remember. Ah, it's Vosin," the woman repeated. At the gesture, she strolled along to the weapons. When she got there, she contemplated the displayed mock weapons. She randomly picked up the first one that came to hand. Much too long that she'd struggle to hold up the point, and by shards it was heavy! Vos let her eyes widen a bit in surprise. "Shells, they always this heavy?" Vos laid the one back down and picked up several more. She'd need to do something to strengthen her arms. Of course flailing around with one of these should do that nicely. The woman arched a brow to hear the reason they were heavy was metal course. "Oh." That.. kind of made sense? You can always chop and haul wood Vosin, or I'd never say no to a long oiling. Tiaeth chimed in right on cue.How about I practice whacking you with a weighted stick instead? She thought back at him with the image of her painting circles on his belly then hitting them with the mock sword. "Into fifth wing? Why that one? What can you tell me about the different wings?" It took several tries before she found one she thought she'd be comfortable with. By the end she'd still probably be sore enough for numbweed.

“First, Two, and Three are all fighters. First’s the best, and they help out… everywhere, I guess. Ummm, two takes care of pirates and bandits and smugglers and that sort of thing, and three deals with murder and undercover work. Fourth does disasters, so if there’s a fire needs fixing or a refugee camp building they do that, and five-one is where I want to be, they investigate financial crime so if you’ve got bent scales they’ll find you out”
Egg listed off, watching Vosin with big eyes - but then her eyes were always big, so much so that they seemed to swell to the size of soup-plates. It was possible that she was more then a little eager to impress.
“Or if you’re making your own marks, or trying to sell people bridges, or defrauding your fellow merchants, or adding resin to your ale, or sand to your dough to make up weight, or selling one spice as what should be another, like mixing flour in with ground ginger” she added, barely seeming to take a breath. “I went to market with my uncle’s servants, on and off, and they knew all the tricks. Some of them can make people sick. If you defraud a banker, then you don’t just hurt the banker and his family, you hurt all the people who’ve got loans he’s got to call in to stay solvent, and all the people he might’ve lent to but he can’t, and selling bridges is something people should be wary of but sometimes they’re not so smart because the prize is right there and they could be rich, and making marks hurts everyone because then there are too many around and everything costs more, and even when there is enough then people still go hungry”

Vosin listened intently to the descriptions of the different flights. Back in her day, the woman thought in irony, they weren't varied or selective. She knew nothing of fighting, so probably those first three were all out unless she turned into a miracle fighter. Unlikely, but she wanted to learn to fight. Vos smiled at the girl watching her. "I'm afraid I don't really fit into any of those. I'm a dragonrider first and foremost." It was an entirely new way of thinking. Being a dragonrider sounded like a secondary occupation here. The woman wasn't interested in baking, except to eat it, or trying to sell anything. And it all sounded so complicated. "Guess I'll have to think on that then. For now let's practice with these things." She held up the wooden sword she'd picked. "Where do I start with this?" Tiaeth was also interested in the jobs of the different wings. How did the dragons deal with it? You can always offer rides on miniature dragons Vos. I'm sure the kids would love it. Then we can travel from hold to hold and attend gathers. His eyes whirled a bright green. I'm sure it would be a great novelty. She arched her brow and looked back over her shoulder at the mini bronze. "Ppppft! You're kidding right? Like give joy rides to holders? Is that all you really want to amount to?" She rolled her eyes and looked back at Egg. "Really the outrageous ideas he comes up with! Like holders would pay marks for a ride on an undersized bronze." It was preposterous, and almost hilarious at the same time. He mocked a gaze at his rider. Don't hold the pointy end Vosin.

“Thread only just started falling” Egg pointed out shyly, as if she wasn’t entirely confident in speaking up to this adult rider. “Um. Riders have’t pay their way, just as much as anyone else. You can’t expect the whole of Pern to pay ten percent off everything they’ve got so that riders can sit around for a few hundred turns”
She smiled, as if not exactly sure what to say to the rest of it. “Um. You need t’hold it like you’re… um, willing to hurt someone with it. That’s what I’m always told”

Vosin perked up as her young teacher mentioned Thread. That was The Ultimate Job for a dragonrider. It didn't matter to her which wing she was put into so long as she and Tiaeth could fly thread. They were born and bred for it. Well born 500 Turns ago. Vosin was willing to fight Thread back then or now. She grinned as she felt Tiaeth's sentiments and heard him rumble in the background. "I'm sure they'd throw a fit if we tried that," Vosin muttered gloomily, thinking about the massacre that had caused her flight through time. So that meant she'd really need to find something to earn her pay. Giving those joy rides didn't sound half bad now. A point to address at a later time. For now she'd focus on this lesson. Vos adjusts her grip on the handle, then eyes her teacher dubiously. "Uh.... well...." Like she was willing to hurt someone? That went completely against her code as a dragonrider. They were suppose to protect. "So how do you deal with being a deadly protector?" Tiaeth rumbled ominously as he was reminded of thread. He too was born to fight thread! The small bronze shifted to his other side and his wings twitched. He settled back down and resumed watching the pair.

Egg smiled, a little shyly. “I… it’s noble. Um. I mean, it’s what riders do, what they are. They’re courteous, brave, gallant, loyal and true. People look up to them, and they defend us. I don’t think there’s anything better for me to do, if I can truly do it”
Alright, the teenager had an incredibly optimistic (and some might say naive) view of riders, but that was as it was.
