It seemed like Leoth was growing larger every day. One of the heartier dragons of the last clutch (hearing problems aside), the green had powerful shoulders and sturdy posture from the tip of her nose to her meaty tail, and carried herself like she was aware of every pound of muscle and ready to use it. She was taller than her rider now, when she cared to extend her stocky neck to its full length, and her wings were beginning to outgrow her ability to tromp beside her rider in the Lower Caverns. Between that and the fact that her growth spurt was only enhancing her intimidating wher-like appearance, Alcine had been spending less time free-roaming in search of the Time Riders, fascinating as they seemed. With Alcine's general aversion to the coming cold, that left them the common area of the weyrling barracks as the only place to spend any free time, and it was in this cramped environment that Alcine stumbled on the most curious discovery.
Leoth, for all her ferocity, could be surprisingly gentle.
It had come up for the first time when Alcine was writing in her journal, the green watching with an inquisitive flicker of her jewel-tone eyes. She'd tried to eat the ink first, and all that did was cause her to toss the vial halfway across the room, splattering black all over her rider's bed while she squawked in disgust. No one had informed her that it was going to taste like dirt! However, in the aftermath, Alcine had found the green making shaky swirl-marks in the ink puddles on the ground, and from that she'd formulated an idea.
It had cost her the better part of her savings for the turn, but Alcine managed to procure a large piece of vellum, the kind typically used for drawing out maps, and she spread it across the floor of the common room, folding out each corner with care. She poured about a candlemark's worth of ink in the shallow well of a bowl, then stepped back, adjusting the length of her old candidate's tunic. If Leoth decided she was going to throw ink everywhere, she'd thought, at least it wouldn't be on Alcine's good clothes.
savage,> Leoth retorted sharply, plodding up to the bowl with a curious huff as she smelled the contents.
I will know for next time, Alcine responded meekly, her head tilting downwards. To an outsider, it might seem strange that she continued to use body language even while not speaking, but in the past few months she'd mostly relied on mindspeak, even as her classmates spoke aloud to their companions. Alcine had never been chatty to begin with, and what use was the spoken word to a dragon that wouldn't hear?
<We will know for next time,> came Leoth's response, bubbling with warmth. The green lifted a steady claw, dipping it lightly in the bowl of ink, then splattered it across the map with a squelch. Alcine winced at first, but her expression unwound when she watched the dragon begin to scrawl in the randomly created puzzles, slowly scribing whorls that looked like smoke, or perhaps a coming storm. Intent as she was on her scribblings, it was hard to believe that Leoth had ever seemed dangerous.Shaddaling Sorry about the wait! I hope this is an okay setup. <3

Yevalee laughed as he walked into the barracks checks flushed from the chill and gold earrings glittering in his earlobes. He shrugged out of the cloak, folding it as he walked towards the common room.
Sleuth replied, following behind her rider, surprisingly quite despite her bulk.
Yevalee sighed. The practice was close enough to dance that he enjoyed the formations and synchronization between partners. Smacking others around was just not in his nature. He paused on the entrance way to the common area, looking over Leoth, her splotched hide was distinctive.
Sleuth nudged her rider over and looked into the room. Her focused ended up less on who was in the room but what was being done. She questioned, pushing past her rider to investigate.

Alcine lifted her head as the pair entered the common room, eyeing the two with a reserved air about her. She'd never really had the chance to apologize to Yevalee on Leoth's behalf, but then again, Leoth felt no need to apologize for her behavior and accidental mauling of the boy, so any attempts on Alcine's part to make amends were likely to go sour. It was a relief, at least, that the pair mostly kept their distance, preventing another confrontation.
At least, that was, until the other green seemed to petition Leoth, thereby alerting her to the pair's presence.
Leoth's body tensed all at once, and she whipped her head around to get a view of who might be intruding upon her quiet time. Upon locking eyes with Sleuth, the blotchy green's flared red and she puffed up her wings, taking up even more space in the already crowded room. Her sister was an affront to her personal space, a threat to her precious scrabblings! Leoth began to stomp forward, but Alcine was quick to her feet, reaching across with her gangly arms to grab her dragon's stout neck before she started her rampage. The girl was no longer heavy enough to actually drag Leoth back, but the added pressure was enough to give the green pause.
This is their space, too, Leoth, Alcine protested, tightening her grip with an exasperated gasp. She looked up to Yevalee, and her face began to redden and splotch. We can share, it's okay.
I don't think that's what she was planning at all, she wasn't sneaking to me.
The stocky green huffed, then snorted, shaking Alcine from her neck before returning to her painting, her posture facing the pair and defensive. After a moment, she dipped an inky talon back into her bowl, eyeing her sister warily. Leoth's voice grumbled like thunder, but it lacked vitriol or hatred. Instead, there was simply frustration, and the slightest hint of alarm.
Alcine, in the meanwhile, did her best not to look like a bird that had been tossed from it's nest, her eyes wide and her heart fluttering in her chest. She did not want to have this conversation now, certainly after that little scuffle. But there was nowhere to hide herself away, not when she was right in the center of the common room with nowhere to be for another half a candlemark. "...H-hello, Yevalee," she stuttered. "How are you?"

Sleuth snorted, a harsh and loud sound, disregarding her sister and her rage as one would disregard a tantrum and turned her head to better look over the trail of ink and smooth surface. Leoth rage was well known and she was not going to be bullied out of this puzzle. Yevalee moved forward, reaching out to draw Sleuth back. He stopped and waited, simply watching as Alcine moved, wrapping around Leoth neck like a chock and if not stopping the rage, slowed it and made the splotchy green think. Sleuth replied, shifting to press her chunky tail against her rider’s side. She hmmed, using her tail to gently crook against her riders legs, drawing him up. Yevalee moved though, trailing a hand up the length of the tail in a fond gesture before taking in the other dragons work. Sleuth shifted, looking over her sisters before lowering her bulk, very firmly sitting. She sent to her sister. Yevalee kept from sighing as Sleuth settled in. They would not be moving anytime soon. He looked up, surprised that Alcine was speaking to him and gave a tiny bit of a smile. “I been well. Sleuth has been tutoring me in my sword work.”

Leoth glanced up from her work, offering her sister a wary glare. After a moment's careful consideration, she began to dip another of her talons in the ink once more, keeping her eyes on the other green. Slowly lowering her claws, the weyrling began to make more swirls and patterns on the vellum. Just when it seemed her gaze had turned downwards, it glanced back up, as if Sleuth might be plotting something.
"T-that's...good," Alcine offered, returning to her seat with shaky hands. She glanced over to the pair, searching for signs of anger or alarm in her bondmate, but saw only concentration, and perhaps a bit of lingering apprehension at having a classmate invade her space. Still, it was clear to see that Leoth's anger was tempering for the moment, and that gave the young woman room to relax in her seat. Sleuth was a beautiful creature to watch in motion, light-footed where Leoth stomped like thunder, and the marbled green had been such a curiosity in the egg. Given what she knew about Yevalee, it seemed to be a good match, healthy and strong.
Speaking of Yevalee, he was still looking at her, still expecting her to speak. Oh. She supposed most people wanted to carry a conversation beyond its introduction, even though the thought of it made her ache. "Is...she a good tutor?" Alcine asked, fishing for more things to say that kept her away from the scars her bondmate had inflicted.Shaddaling Sorry about the delay! I'd love to continue, totally understand if this thread is a bit outdated by this point. <3

Sleuth waited, eyes swirling slowly as Leoth begin to move, focus narrowed down to the claw and the way the ink split and swirled in the digits wake. She replied, not planning on moving and watching her sisters hand, claws, do something surprisingly delicate. Yevalee leaned against his dragon’s bulk, feeling her inhalations and inadvertently breathing in time with the light-footed marble green. They followed different scores, his breaths running on quarters compared to slow rich wholes of Sleuth. He relaxed, and perked slightly at the wavering answer. “She tries, and certainly doesn’t hesitate to reveal problems I might have been ignoring.” Yevalee sighed, fingers scrunching in his coat. “Her advice just clashes with my nature.” I'm up to continuing!

Alcine nodded emphatically, certainly sympathetic to Yevalee's plight. Leoth seemed calm now, content to her scrabblings and her safe place, but most of the time she was an utter terror to behold, fury in the form of claws and teeth and wings. It had been hard for the girl, the past few months, to adjust to a new life where she couldn't just sit in the background and watch others, where she had to reach out and grab a part of herself before she bit something. But that's what she had wanted, right? To find a bondmate and complete herself?
Alcine cast a long glance to Leoth, and she smiled weakly. They weren't quite in tune with each other, nor would they ever be, she supposed, but she was Leoth's and Leoth was hers and that was just fine. "The clash is good...I think. It makes you learn and grow."
Speaking of learning and growing, Alcine bit her lip as she turned to Yevalee, deciding to face down the elephant in the room. "I--erm--I mean, Leoth--well, not really Leoth, but on her behalf--we're sorry. About what happened in the hatching." Her face a bright red, Alcine looked down at her wringing hands, curling up in her chair.
"If it makes you feel any better, she hadn't meant to hurt you. She just wanted to...take a stand, I guess."

Yevalee pursed his lips, considering the wisdom and smiled slightly. “It is certainly an experience,” he admitted. Sleuth was curvy, light footed, and sharp eyed. She had her flaws, but she did complete something he hadn’t had since he had been with his twin sister. Even if he didn’t agree with her methods. He winced, stilling slightly before sighing, deflating. “I know, if her brother hadn’t interfered… I would still have been humiliated, but I wouldn’t have the scars.” Ankheth had dragged Leoth off and at heart had been the reason he had been clawed. He held in a delicate snort at the thought of Leoth not wanting to hurt him. She knew quiet well what she had done and he still hadn’t figured out why and it was over now. “It isn’t your fault… Alcine?” Yevalee looked concern over his fellow rider, watching the wringing hands. “How long have you been holding this in?” He questioned, moving over, and crouched down by the chair. “Since the hatching?”
