It is long since time to give a new name to Old Hemisect City. With the complete reconstruction, a moniker such as "Old" doesn't seem to fit, while New Hemisect City already holds the title for a simple update. New Old Hemisect City is just ridiculous!
A new era of Alternian conquest and victory has been rung in with the city's revival, and a name change is necessary. The call for possible titles has been announced throughout the continent, with a reward given for the most esteemed names entered. Will you take part in the history of our great planet Alternia?
This is a contest created to establish a new title for our beloved Old Hemisect City. Guidelines are below! - You may submit up to three possible names for Old Hemisect City using the form below. You can submit these all at once or on separate dates. - The format for this writing competition is up to you and is not required to be in character. Your entry can be a roleplay piece imagining that the new city name has already been established, writing a letter to the council persuading them to your name choice, or any other number of scenarios. You're also welcome to write the description in a strictly informational format. - Only users whose quest trolls have been accepted or who have participated in the August meta may take part in this contest. - This contest will run from October 17th through November 25th. At this time, the top three names will be chosen by staff and the community will then vote on the new name of Old Hemisect City! - Submissions that fit in with Hivestuck and Homestuck canon will be vastly preferred! Consider the representative nature of troll names and the structure of Alternian words in making your new city names. A lot of meaning can go into a city name, including symbolism, history and tone. Make your entries count! - The Highblood Alternian Council that is judging these names will punish those who submit anti-government city names with culling. (You're welcome to submit them, but there's no likelihood of those kinds of names or joke names being chosen in the final 3.)
Post this form when you're ready to enter. Good luck!

A new era begins with...Epoch City
Description:
Dear Council,
I believe Epoch city is the best name for the newly restored Old Hemisect City. We are, after all, entering a new age, where trollkind shall rise from it's ashes and retake the galaxy!
All Hail the Empress!
So my ex-moirail... I saw him send something out the other day, something about naming the city Epoch city? More like Apoch city, you know? The piece of riverbeast dung wouldn't take me in when they brought down my hive, and do you know how many circular devices you have to leap through to get a waver?!
So yeah. Left him...
Mind if I stay at your place for the night?
(The reasoning behind this name is that it's, well, a new era. Plus, it sounds awesome and strong and pretentious, perfect for a troll city. Plus, some lowblood who recently got evicted from their hive could sarcastically nickname it Apoch city, which could become Apocalypse city and how awesome is that...)
A new era begins with...Pinkgrave City
Description:
Your councilness...
It would give us a lot of... not-hope... if you were to name it after the Wonderful mutant Horrible rebel leader. Pink Grave, to be exact, as a marker for her Martyrdom catastrophic and disgustingly hopeless failure. To remind us of What we can do when we rise up What happens to those who rebel against the Empress.
Thank you for your time in reading my missive...
(Not that the rebel leader was killed, but it would be a spooky reminder about what happens to rebels against the empress... we build a city over your corpse and throw flaming rocks at you on holidays?
Again, the rebel leader is still alive and kicking, but who's to say that that's what they told the public about the pinkblood? wink )
A new era begins with...True Hemisect City
Aww, ******** yeah. Check out my sweet rhymes.
We ain't Old Hemisect no more, So we gotta settle the score, No more fakin' For we be takin' This ******** thing apart. So where do we start? Well I gotta name in my pan, So if you're a fan, Give a cheer deep in the wet [Ocean], For the REAL HEMISECT!!!
You all are gonna hear that one in concert once I think up a better lyric than wet. Anything else rhyme with Hemisect?
(Description: Its the real Hemisect city now. Alternatively, it could be 'Actual' Hemisect city, or 'The real' Hemisect city....)
Description: the letter that follows is full of crossing outs and it's pretty ragged...are those teethmarks?! Yo ******** Council,
I was up and hoping you might choose consider my name for the city. Spectrum City is a name that represents how trolls of all colours worked together under her glorious Empress's banner to save my our home. It may even draw out the rebels because don't those ******** believe in weird s**t because protestors against the name could be like, interrogated? Also because the spectrum is wicked amounts of pretty, you know?
A new era begins with...Victoyal City This letter, though written on poor-quality paper, has excellently neat markmanship and smells faintly of a pleasant scent.
Dear Council, It honours me and other lowbloods that you have allowed us to submit names for consideration. I am deeply grateful for your benevolence. I belive that the empress's victory should be honored in old hemisect's new name, and using traditional alternian naming techniques of combination, I came up with the idea of Victoyal City.
A new era begins with...Whisperton City! This letter's lettering is rough and uneven, although it looks like care has been applied it's still very difficult to read.
Dear Higher Ups,
I think you should call it Whisperton City! Because the young empresses lusus's whisper could kill everyone at any time, which means we need to be reminded to be good? Rebels are stupid and I don't wanna die because of them.
PS. You're really cool! PPS. Can you hand my attached fan-letter to the empress please.!

A new era begins with...[ Requiem City ]
Description: A greenblood with long hair brushed behind her horn submitted this, a sad smile on her face as she wrote a small letter to go with it and proudly walked away:
"This war bought nothing but death and destruction, sacrifice and loss. We should try to remember those lost to it-- those lost to this city since before the war. I propose Requiem City, so the dead are always remembered."
A new era begins with...[ Desphilim City ]
Description: A brownblood with glasses and a slight stutter submitted this, pulling his scarf above his permanently stuffy nose and quickly hurrying away afterwards, as if not wanting to be seen there. He wrote a note with it, too...
"Well I um think that since this city is only going to allow highbloods and other such greater powers that are extremely superior to every other troll I think since they are the queen's subjects they should be seen as better than us because you know um they're higherblooded and yeah Nephilim are known as half trolls and half um angels or whatever and yeah. Also this government is very discordic so I just pushed that there too, as disphilium city, but um, I think I spelt it wrong. Yeah I spelt it wrong, I wrote Desphilim City. Oh no. Um. Bye."
Description: This is a Gotham City v. Metropolis reference parallel (and the only idea I've mulled over that doesn't end in "city") but I can't write an IC letter about it because I'm pretttty sure superheroes would be against SO MANY agendas of the trolls in power. It's also funny because Metropolis is always being attacked by huge threats and considering nasty stuff has happened to OHC twice now...
A new era begins with...Civisect City
Description: Civic + hemisect = Civisect! Eh? Eh? A letter reads: This is a new city, but built on the ashes of the old. We should never forget where we came from, especially with all the tragedies that have befallen this area. It is our civic duty to work towards a better future, but also remember our roots so perhaps the city will prosper and never see another dark day again.

A new era begins with...Avalon Heights
Description: This letter has been seriously manhandled. The writing is quick and illegible, and there are tears in the page from writing too fast.
Hey Council!!
This awesome city needs an awesome name! I came up with Avalon Heights, inspired by the great hero, Troll King Arthur! You see, Troll King Arthur went to this place called Avalon to recover his wounds after a big battle. And thats just what's happening to the city! I even used the word "Heights" instead of city to make it sound fancier! It makes it sound more upscale, you know? So the highbloods won't get lost. It's kind of like Four Fronds, how it sounds like the name of some expensive temporary hivestem. Perfect for the new highblood inhabitants!
A new era begins with...Belview City
Description: (bel (good) + view) This letter is impeccable and articulate, though covered in bits of lusus fur.
Dear Council,
The view from the city's beach is impeccable, and as such is my inspiration for this city name. It capitalizes on the good looks of the city's new makeover, while providing the idea of a fresh outlook towards the future. I'm sure many of the council members would prefer to forget the events that transpired at Old Hemisect City, which is why I've decided to leave out any connections to the old city. Thank you for your consideration.
A new era begins with...Mersang City
Description: (Mer (like mermaids) + sang (singing) The cursive penmanship in this letter is very fancy and lovely, minus some bits that seem to have been done with a shaky hand.
Dearest Council,
This name was inspired by... um... the wonderful music of the mertrolls! Where else can you hear the lovely melodies of the seadwellers? (Well... um... other than Four Fronds, I guess...) Now that the seadwellers have a nicer home, I thought they'd like a nice name to go with that. That's all I have to offer, but thank you kindly for reading my suggestion!

A new era begins with...[Mercurial City]
Description: The letter looks like its seen better days, and is hastily written with several scribbled pictures of happy stick figure trolls.
To Those In Charge,
I think the new name should be something fast, energetic and lively! The Cities overhaul will be rapid and changed for the better. The name can't be no snooze job, you guys already mopped the floor with those rebels after-all. What with it being in no time flat, something snappy seems perfect. See, since the towns fluctuating and moving towards change, what better way to celebrate that then with a fancy name!
A new era begins with...[Oysterville]
Description: This letter looks like it was dropped in a puddle of mud and still has a few specks on the page. It is otherwise legible, and shares the same penmanship as the last.
Yo Council Members,
Sooo! I was thinking we can call the town maybe something like Oysterville!! The town is like a diamond in the roughs, and what with the nice beach view it seemed rather fitting! Right now it looks unassuming and run down, but soon it will make its transformation and be rebuilt. Any ties to whats transpired prior to the rebuilding will be nothing but a faint memory. The town will reveal its true worth once its done maturing I'm sure of it.
A new era begins with...[Aiolos District]
Description: This letter looks crumpled, but has been smoothed out in an attempts to make it legible. It is written just as quickly as those before it, but is harder to read. It has torn from eraser marks in several locations, and has scribble marks littering it.
Heya Higher-ups,
I did a little lot of thinking, and what about something that literally means change~ That couldn't hurt yeah? You totally want out with the old (and bad) and in with the new 'n good right? The Aiolos District will be new, improved and totally the right pick for the newly restored town.

A new era begins with...[City of Confederaptitude]
Description: [ To whom it may concern:
It was a great tragedy that befell Alternia during the formerly-titled Old Hemisect City's first reconstruction attempt. I speak for all Alternians when I enumerate my vast disappointment in Captain Puchen's decision to engage in mindless violence against the prudent conchtions of her fine-finned betters, and again when I disdain the senseless rabble's attempt to hold on to echoes of Alternia's past. It's safe to say we've all learned from the ordeel. Our focus should never be on the quickly-waning tides of yesternight, but always on what lays ahead. It is only in that direction that trollkind can truly flourish, for we must remember that as mighty as we seam, perfection is but a lightyear away.
My name is Dictys Glauci, and I'm a concerned citizen of Alternia. I can claim an excellently salty pedigree, and am well-known for my active promotion of Alternia's interests among commoners and lowbloods. I have an excellent eye for talent, and I was uniquely affected by the tragedies that befell the city formerly known as Old Hemisect. As a well-traveled sometime resident (my fondest memories are of sliding my dear ship into the loving arms of the dock) and member of the rebuilding crews, I know exactly how much the city means. Four Fronds and New Hemisect City could never hold a candle to this glorious seaside metropolis. It's uniquely situated and boasts of an expansive coastline, excellent for the construction of launch sites. Its climate, social and otherwise, have been quite lacking in recent sweeps due to pesky ingrates who never realized how vital the city is to the queen's hold, and how generous she was to allow trolls of their caliber to even set foot on its premises, but the progress on the soon-to-be-rebirthed city promise an environment primed for industry, tourism, and Alternia's cosmic dreams.
Such a beautiful city deserves for as much funding as possible to drift its way - just as much as it deserves nomenclature appropriate for its station. I am of the opinion, of course, that Her Imperial Condescension Regina Marian's name, while wonderful (it does roll off the tongue so simply!) and awe-inspiring, should be used sparingly. It is such an iconic collection of syllables, set to inspire similar ones beset upon all sorts of objects for millennia to come. But Her Imperial Condescension, as we are all aware, is a singular ruler, and as such her name should be used for emphasis - only for the most important of projects. While of course the reconstruction of a base for her empire is significant, it'd clearly be far more significant to use the moniker to mark her first interstellar conquest, something that I have great hopes the new city will propel us toward.
Perhaps the most appropriate name for the new city should be one that celebrates the ability of all trollkind to unite as a force for good. Together we are the heralds of a new age. A name that inspires trollkind to coalesce under one magestic fuschia banner. I think we all realize what I'm hinting at here, of course - the minting of a new word, just as state-of-the-art as the city it will describe. Confederaptitude, I like to call it: it implies the union of every troll's disparate abilities in the singular pursuit of the highest Alternian art, which is, naturally, dividing and conquering.
Together, we can proceed, even in the light of recent tragedy. Alternia will move forward - with you, the council of the newly-christened city, standing just behind Queen Marian herself. I believe in tomorrow's starships, and in trollkind's incredible resilience.
Sincerely,
The note was accompanied by a small chest bearing an actual hoppus foot of solid gold beetles. ]
A new era begins with...[Dictopolis Glaucity]
Description: [The beetles eased their ways into the royal coffers as construction began with a slick, almost wet smoothness. A tower here, an efficient (and especially elegantly hidden) generator there...the supposedly anonymous benefactor certainly had an excellent taste for technology! The lionfish's share of the donations had to be aimed straight for the aeronautical research center that was certain to be constructed in the city's newly gleaming walls - perhaps somewhere with floor-to-ceiling windows and an excellent view of the docks and waters, and of course an underground vanity entrance, so that enterprising trolls might swim straight from their hives to working for the glory of the empire. There was no doubt about it: the source of all this money was dedicated and loyal to the empire above all else. Of course, the elegantly-penned letter - sealed with the traditional gold and alexandrite of certain high-class ocean-dwellers - was quite helpful for the council, too.
[letter above]
The council had read the argument, of course, but what they saw was the gleaming gold-gilt letters and costly stationary. This was a sustainable benefactor - and one perhaps too blindly loyal to the empire for eir own good. It was clear that ey had high ambitions - and it was clearer still that ey could be easily bribed. ]

A new era begins with...[Scleriteholm]
Description: Sclerites are 'hardened body parts'. The term typically refers to exoskeletons and spicules of invertebrates. In beetles in particular, the sclerite plates provide a flexible but tough armour. Considering trolls' origins, as well as the current naming schema, going with something bug-like seemed appropriate. The defensive nature of sclerites refers to the empire's ability to defend the city against rebel takeover (even though, to the trolls who previously lived in OHC the empire presence was more like an invasion).
Having a city called "Sclerite" by itself seemed a little lackluster (though I assure you sclerite can be very shiny) so I tacked on the suffix "holm". In addition to making it sound like more like a city name, it plays off the word "scleritome", a set of scerlites. Incidentally, the origin of "holm" in nordic languages refers to an "islet", which is not quite appropriate considering that the city is part of a larger land mass, but it does tie into the the fact that it is a seaside city.
A new era begins with...[Aurelia]
Description: "Aurelia" is a synonym for "chrysalis", the pupal stage of butterflies. The word itself comes from Latin, meaning "golden". With the city now catering to highbloods, it felt appropriate to have some kind of reference to that social shift. Wealth is frequently used to represent of prosperity and power. Pretty self-explanatory.
There are a dozen other words that pertain to golden. So why butterflies?
In addition to being symbols of beauty (let's be honest: the city needed a makeover) butterflies are associated with rebirth. OHC was not simply renovated. In many places I imagine they had to work their way from the ground up, thanks to much of the structure getting destroyed in the power struggle. The city was reborn, both structurally and socially.
I'll be that cool guy who doesn't write things in character.
