Vesresh tiptoed nervously behind his sisters, looking behind him warily as if – at any moment – an adult was going to find them, catch them, and get them in trouble. Vesresh was not a troublemaker, and did not want to be one: that did not go well here, and wherhandlers were scary... just generally.

“Are you sure we can do this?” he asked, waveringly, grabbing onto one of his sister's sleeves as he thought he heard a noise.

It was just a rat.

“I mean... We'll get in trouble if we're caught...”

Vos glanced back at her youngest sibling and snickered, although softly. She kept her hand resting on the rough wall. "Sure we can. Ever candidate takes a right of passage to see the eggs of their first clutch." She grinned wickedly at him. "Guess what? It's your first clutch as a candidate!"

"Caught? Pish! We're just going to look at the eggs. No harm in that. As long as we don't disturb the gold or try to go onto the sands they dun care. Remember our first time Ves?" She nudged her twin in the arm.

Looking at the eggs brought so many wonderful adventures to mind that Vos would definitely be starry eyed if she stared too long. She couldn't wait to see the eggs again though. The girl had intended to go alone to check the way before bringing her siblings to see, except a couple other girls had kinda attached themselves to her and gone along. Not that she minded.

Oh wow... so it was... His first clutch. Vesresh could hardly believe it. He was 12 – he was finally 12. “We're just looking, right?” he asked, still very nervous. He was sure that if they tried to touch the eggs, it could be... well, it would be a problem. They were just laid, and there was a thing for that: The Touching.

“And they really won't care?” Vesresh squeaked, “Are you sure?”

Ves smiled as she snuck behind her sister to go take a peek at the eggs. They always did this, and until now, they did it by themselves. But this time, Esre was finally old enough to stand for a clutch and Vos was right that it was a 'rite of passage'. She stopped long enough to ruffle her brother's hair. "It'll be fine Esre. We just gotta stay off the sands and leave the gold alone. This is just to get a sneak peak of what we'll see for the touching!" Vesin was just as excited as her siblings, maybe not as nervous excited as Esre was but she and Vos definitely always loved sneaking a peak.

"Sure. Only a look, and see if we can count the eggs. Though I'll admit it doesn't have the best vantage point." That was always the downfall with this spot. It was hard to see the whole Sands, or any small eggs hiding behind a large one. Still they got to see the eggs. "We can guess which color is gonna come out of the eggs."

Vos grinned. "Long as we're quiet. Sure as sure. As this is your first clutch we expect big things out of you Esre." She teased her younger brother. The teen moved up to the crack. "There we are!" Vos whispered excitedly. "Come take a look." She moved aside to give her siblings the best view.

Well, if they were just looking then... maybe it would be okay. Vesresh, as usual, stuck close anyway, taking comfort in the familiar contact with his sisters: the ruffling of his hair, the teasing, everything. They had to be the best siblings ever – he was sure.

He hadn't realized that their viewing spot would be a crack in a wall. Warily, he approached the crack, looking at Vosin nervously as she stepped aside to let him through. Finally, heart racing, he peered in through the crack. It took a few moments for him to get a clear visual – his eyes did not help – but eventually, the cavern, with it's large, shining occupant and it's warmly tawny sands came into clear view...

As did the oblong eggs.

“Whoa...” he said, awed, “There's so many... in so many colors...” he backed away, blinking vigorously to re wet his eyes: the heat from the cavern had dried it out a little. “I can't tell all the colors though... are they supposed to be all those colors?” he asked, “Some of them are colors that dragons don't come in...” Not that he hadn't seen clutches on the sands before, briefly, while running errands, but he'd also heard rumors about what happened when a Gold mated with a brown and... he didn't know what to expect: this was his first.

Z'radi and Rotatonth

Well, Okay. So Z'radi couldn't help it. She wanted to see the eggs too. It'd been two turns since she'd even had a chance to see a clutch, and she'd be sharded if she was going to pass up on an oppurtunity to ogle them.

So, when she'd had business in Benden, she'd nipped down to the caverns, much to her dragon's annoyance.

commented Z'radi,

came the answer, and Z'radi knew it was true, if stupid.

Her dragon, waiting outside, completely ready to leave for Malvren and home, huffed.

Smug with her victory, Z'radi meandered down the caverns, looking for a place to peek in at the eggs. That was when she heard voices – young voices. She smirked, mischevious, and slid into the shadows, taking on a stealthy walk. Kids, huh? Trying to take a peek at what could be their future eggs?

Well, why not play with them a little bit?

"Pretty eh?" She grinned at his reaction. "Yeah usually there's all sorts of colors. The only ones you can tell for sure are the golds cause their eggs are the biggest and gold. Always."

Vos took another peek and tried to count the eggs. "Looks like the brown actually managed to sire a gold egg too. Lucky him! The more eggs the better chance of us impressing." She ruffled his hair. "Want another look Esre?" It's not like the eggs were doing anything, but it was still fun to watch them.

Vesin had taken the roll of watch guard after she had taken her look. She was so glad to hear excitement and questions from Esre. It was a big ordeal for him and Ves wanted to try and make it as easy as possible. She stood with her back facing her siblings with a slight smile as she leaned against the wall. It was pretty amazing that a brown had managed to sire a gold egg and a rather large clutch. She guessed it just went to show how things may have been wrong all these years, and that a brown could be just as good as a bronze. But with her attention turned to her siblings, she didn't notice the soft footsteps until they were closer and her heart started beating quickly. "Shh. Guys. I think some one's coming!" She said in a hushed tone. Oh shards, what was she going to do? They couldn't afford to get in trouble with a hatching in the near future.

Vesresh looked through the crack again, awed. “So many...” he murmured again. If they came in so many colors, then it would be impossible to know which dragon came from what, unless they were golden. But there was such a variety of sizes! “How does that happen?” he asked his sister, taking a last lingering look at the beautiful gold with her clutch. Dragons always seemed so uniform and unvarying, but here, in the egg, they were amazingly diverse...

He jolted back away from the crack at Vesin's exclamation, looking around him with the most adorably guilty look imaginable. He looked from sister to sister, unsure of what to do. He did not want to be caught, though!

~~~
Z'radi smirked as one of the kids got wise to her – apparently she was not as stealthy as she thought.
scolded her dragon, who was promptly ignored.
Z'radi stood still, hiding in the shadows and biting back a snicker as the children came into view: three of them, with matching hair. She had to bite back another snicker as the smallest one jumped back, startled, and acted like a puppy caught being naughty.
Cute kids
muttered Rotatonth.
She wondered if she should wait to see what the kids would do, but then they might scram and for good reason too: People were touchy when eggs were on the sands, wherhold or weyr or flit nest. She decided on a more gregarious option.
“Hello there!” she said cheerfully, stepping out of the shadows suddenly and waving at the three.
While she'd been looking at the eggs, the redhead had been counting. After stepping aside for her brother, she grinned. "I counted seventeen! Mighty fine for a brown." Vos gave a shrug. "I'm not sure why Esre. I just know that is how it is." Now that he brought it up, it really was an interesting subject. She was prepared to talk about it some more when her twin sounded a quiet alarm.
Shards! Who was it? Had they heard the trio? Vos froze to listen. Ves was right, soft footsteps. She had an excuse prepared if an adult should catch them. They'd gotten lost obviously, then they happened to find this crack, but didn't want to disturb the golden queen with her eggs. It totally sound plausible, but she'd never had had the chance to use it before.
Vos narrowed her eyes a bit as suddenly a mature woman stepped out of the shadows and waved with her greeting. This wasn't someone she recognized immediately. "Hello rider. Did you get lost in the tunnels too?" Vos let her green eyes go all big as if with surprise. "It seems like there's always a new tunnel that I've never seen before when I think I have the place mapped out." She laughed.
