Runya was glad to have her paws back home. She had found she liked traveling with her brother from place to place, seeking new demons and the like...but after the two-leggers had torn apart their pride and scattered it to the winds...Well, it was good to be home. The golden-eyed lioness looked around, taking in the moonlight-drenched features of the edge of the jungle that encroached on their territory.

And she paused, nudging her companion.

"Ringwe. Ringwe, look. That's not one of our kills." The animal she was staring at was devoid of blood, despite being abandoned not long ago from what she could tell. Oh yeah, it was mostly-eaten but...Seriously, something was just OFF about the kill. And something ate away at the rumors of blood-drinking lions deep in the jungle, lions Umarth had said her birth-father was a part of...

But they were gone now, weren't they?

It was good to be home again. In the heat and darkness, with the volcano that knew all of their true names looming in the distance. He wished Viwimbi could join him, but they both knew she wouldn't fit in amongst the demons. She fit best where she was, and they would visit, from time to time, when the distance felt far too great for them to be apa-

He growled at Runya's nudge, pulled from his thoughts.

"Dammit, what now?" He looked over at his sister, annoyance on his face. And then he looked towards the mentioned kill. "It's just a kill. Wait." He frowned, moving towards it and sniffing.

"It's damn near fresh. But it's drained of blood more than we ever manage. What the hell?"

"Rogues don't do that, Ringwe." They'd been out in the rogue lands enough to know. "Neither do we. That's..." She made a face of disgust, then uncertainty. "Ringwe. Our supposed neighboring pride was wiped out, wasn't it? By plague and flood and time and the two-legs? But they're the only ones I can think of doing this." Perhaps...they weren't gone? But how could they have survived all those things...

She just wasn't sure. Hell, she'd never even met one of the supposed Mwana-a'lela. Just heard of them from lions like Umarth and her siblings.

Neighboring pride...oh. OH. Ringwe's eyes widened a bit. Everyone that had been born in the Aikanaro'hini that did any rounds on the border or knew Umarth and her siblings knew the stories. Stories of lions who drained their prey dry. Stories of lions who weren't demons, but lured their victims into the darkness with smiles and seduction. The Mwana-a'lela.

"They couldn't have survived. No non-demon could have survived what swept through the lands. And...that's if they even truly existed." He didn't doubt Umarth just...the idea of the Mwana-a'lela was a little terrifying, truly.

"Umarth says they did." And Umarth wasn't one to lie. "But if they're all gone or dead...then what left behind the strange kill? And have there been similar ones left behind?" Runya resolved to ask around the pride, see what she could find out. Because if there were more...a problem could be imminent. A very serious problem.

And they'd just gotten their home back! This was not good.

"We'll have to investigate." The needed to make sure their home was secure. Safe. "Should we report this to Mother and Tuli?" They were the ones in charge of dealing with things outside the pride. And intruders would certainly count for that. "Or do we do further investigate and then report?" He was more inclined towards the latter, if only because it meant he could present more than just speculation and worries. He preferred having something concrete.

"Wait." Runya poked the kill with a paw carefully, then looked around for anything else. "We wait, and investigate a little more on our own. If this is a lone incident? Then there's nothing to report. If this isn't, though...then we have a problem and it will need brought to Mother and Tuli's attention quickly." Their pride couldn't afford problems again. They already had two nat and a pair of demons injured. They were still rebuilding. They just...couldn't afford to have more problems.

Ringwe nodded, shaking himself. It was always good when his sister was of a similar mind to him. He and Runya were usually so very different, and approached things differently. Perhaps that was why they worked together so well. At least there could be little clues around the kill. They could look for pawprints, odd scents, left-behind fur. "We'll investigate tonight, then. Since we've little else to do right now." They could take to finding their mother's killer again later.

It was still so strange that his mother was alive again, and with wings and the powers of a god this time!

"And until we know more, we keep this quiet. We can't afford to cause a panic. Or to have anyone getting ideas. Not yet." She frowned, looking to her brother. "We stick together. If this is a problem, we don't want caught unawares." Not with the tales of how the Mwana-a'lela were. Not with the state of the kill they had found. No...they would stick together, and overpower their enemy if needed.

"We'll make sure everything is okay, Ringwe. We won't lose anyone again." Never again...Not their mother. Not their siblings. Not even the large god their mother had chosen for a mate.

"We will ensure it doesn't happen." Their line would not die again. No one in it. Not in any way but one of their choosing. They were demons. They would not fall to the claws and teeth of another ever again. A tuft of fur caught his eye, fur that was a different color than the kill's. White. And smelling of lion.

"I think I found our first clue, Runya. Get ready for a long night. We've got a lot to do." They would get to the root of this disturbing mystery. And they would ensure their pride didn't flounder right at their rebirth.
