Ara shook in Detra’s embrace and eventually he rose, lifting her up and guiding her back into the house. She clung to him as they moved, not fully realizing they were moving into the house until she was seated on the couch. Ara’s eyes had been closed and her face tucked against Detra. Now, though, her arms were empty and she was staring at the table in front of her couch. She had been so very scared the minute Lithian’s water had surrounded Detra’s face, knowing that the liquid was likely on its way inside of his lungs. It had shocked Ara, that Lithian would go so far like that.
It had even scared her and for a minute, as her wind picked up and a scream had ripped from her lungs, she had feared that Lith would continue with the attack. When Detra had collapsed, and Lith’s water ran onto the ground, into a large puddle, Ara’s knees had gone weak with relief and fear at the same time. What if Lithian had killed Detra right then and there?
Ara’s body shook as she brought her legs up onto the couch and curled in on herself. Until she had felt Detra’s pulse, Ara had feared that she had lost him. After all the progress they had made together, it could have been extinguished that quickly. At the thought, the tears started to roll down her cheeks. Ara wiped at her face, burying it against her arms to hide them from Detra’s view.

Detraeus felt out of his element, to put it mildly. Despite great strides in progress insofar as intimacy was concerned, methods of providing simple comfort in time of emotional distress eluded him. He could see plainly that Araceli was greatly distressed, and he wanted just as greatly to help, but felt torn and uncertain on the matter of how to go about such a thing. Should he…hold her? Kiss her? Talk to her? And what about?
It didn’t help that he failed to understand why she was upset. She had said Lithian hadn’t hurt her, hadn’t threatened her, and now the man was gone, besides. He sincerely doubted that Lithian meant her harm, since the issue had been a matter solely between himself and the other dovaa, not Araceli to begin with. These facts being true, what was there left to concern herself with?
The fact remained, though, that something was plainly bothering her regardless of his lack of ability to understand what precisely it was, and eventually, Detraeus moved forward, settling to an uncertain sit beside her and reaching out. After hovering indecisively, Detraeus eventually settled with her back, his fingers coming to a tentative perch there, his brow furrowed.
“Ara,” he began, keeping his voice quiet, “…if you are not hurt…what is upsetting you…?”

Ara blinked away the tears that threatened to spill over as she uncurled from herself. “I thought I’d lost you, Detraeus. I was so scared.” She clenched her eyes shut against more tears, hands trembling. Ara shook her head. “I can’t lose you.” The instant Lithian’s water had covered Detra’s face, Ara had been in a panic. She moved, tucking herself close to Detra as her arms wrapped around him.

“You haven’t,” Detraeus said, relaxing as she tucked against him and returning her hold — at least that course of action hadn’t been a mistake on his part — though part of him was still puzzled. She had been frightened…for him? He shook his head, but let his questioning rest for the moment in favor of carding his fingers through her hair instead, hands running gently up and down her back. Strange, how such things he once may never have considered came easier now, solely with her. “And you won’t. I’m going nowhere soon. I perhaps should not have underestimated your friend so. He is stronger than I gave credit for. But it will not happen again.”

Araceli shuddered at Detra’s touch and looked up at him. “Good. I’m not sure what I would do…” She shook her head at the thought, wanting to move from the subject of Detra’s would be death. It was not something she wanted to think about now or ever. She frowned at Detra’s comment about Lith. In truth, she too had underestimated her friend. “I knew he was strong. I just didn’t know he had it in him to kill or to at least take it as far as he did.” Her body finally relaxed, tension seeping out of it now that her nerves were settling down. “I’d have never forgave him if he’d kill you. I’m not even sure if I want to speak to him ever again at this point…”

Detraeus blinked, startled. Anger, he could understand. To never speak with the man again, however, despite him having done far less than Detraeus himself would have under the circumstances, puzzled him. So far as he could tell, Lithian had been carelessly merciful. Overly forgiving. Timid. He debated for a significant pause, though, before voicing his thoughts as such.
“Were it me in his shoes,” he said, “I would not be so fortunate as to have a pulse. Your friend was infinitely ‘kinder’ than I would be, should someone dare to threaten you…and it was a battle I threw before him. One he had every reason to feel the need to accept, and one drawn between he and I, with nothing to do with your relation to him. It would seem…unjust, if damages I caused — damages for which he had every reason to feel injured by and act upon — harmed his relationship with you by no fault of his own…”

Ara frowned, clinging tight to Detra as he spoke. She knew he was right, knew, that in Lith’s place, Detra would have killed anyone that had threatened to harm her. It still didn’t make it any easier to forgive her friend for what he had done. “Maybe you’re right...still...it does not make it easier to handle.” She sighed the air escaping on a shuddered breath. The tears had stopped, but she still felt the need to be close to Detra, to assure herself that he was there and was relatively unharmed.
For now, this was all she wanted. The thought of even seeing Lithian at the moment made her skin crawl. She would deal with it in her own time. For now, Detra was all that mattered. She leaned up, placing a kiss at the corner of his lips, lingering for a moment before moving and capturing his lips with his.
