Ever since his stint in the infirmary, after that mission from Hell or beyond, Leslie had been reading more of the book Stormy had given him, so many months ago. Before, he would have had a hard time reading more than a sentence or two at a time, maybe three pages before getting bored.

All that had changed, and now it was a task he wanted to conquer. So, for his duty in the underwater observatory, Leslie had brought a book. Well, that wasn't quite right. He'd brought two: the first being, of course, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and the second one was Watership Down. He didn't have a lot of faith that it wouldn't be as shitty as it looked, but if it was, he could blame Thompson for it.

When his partner arrived, they'd find him hunched over the book, way, way too close to it. Reading was such a pain in the a**.

When she was told she was going to the underwater observatory for her next duty, she was too excited to hide the smile from her serious and attentive look. The technician smirked and attempted to dampen her that it was boring as hell, but her reply was "But it's underwater! I never actually go underwater, besides watching the documentaries!" The excitement of the news covered over who would be her partner.

So Shu arrived hopping and humming a light jumping melody, until she saw her partner. She sneakily got near him and bent down, "What are you reading? Too close to books is bad for your eyes." Shu won't ask this stupid question if not his hands almost completely blocked the cover. The soft voice said with delight.

Leslie jumped, startled. Immediately he was on his feet, weapon summoned and clenched tight, a cagey sort of look on his face, as if he were a step away from a heaving chest or heaving up his lunch. It was hard to tell.

At least, once he saw it was just Shu, he relaxed, relieved. He didn't know what he had been expecting. The worst, probably. Being cornered or surprised was going to set him off for a long, long time.

"Jesus christ," he hissed, dismissing his weapon-- a new shape, now, a club with spikes-- and rubbed at his forehead. "Never ******** do that again. Do you ******** understand? Jesus christ, Shu."

Leslie took a seat in the chair again, a heap of layered clothing. "I don't know, Harry Potter or some s**t."

The male voice said with a playful teasing tone. The club was the thing that drew her attention, it was the first time Shu saw Leslie's weapon, she had the expression that when a kid first saw a beautiful crystal ball on her face. Z snorted.

Attention was given back to the boy as he hissed, the girl had her invisible animal ears drooped, muttered. "You're reading.....so I don't want to disturb you loudly", accompanied with a little duck pout.

Just a few seconds, the amber eyes brightened up when the name was heard, "HARRY POTTER! It's a great adventure plus fantasy series! Which one you're on?" Shu scooted closely to Leslie, like a kitten asking for its food. Being in a magical school was almost every kid's dream, not to mention the protagonist was a boy wearing glasses.

It was embarrassing, to be both caught off guard and overreact to it, but it was easier to brush it away and keep going. Shu barely had a pushy bone in her body anyway. The amount of tears shed over Caelius in a dress was astounding.

"Thanks, I guess," he said, leaning back a bit as Shu got up in his face. "Just the first one. I kind of hate reading, or whatever. It's a pain. But I promised, and I guess it's not so bad."

Leslie opened the book to where he was, pointing at where he was in the chapter: the baby dragon, Norbert, had just bitten Ron.

"a*****e deserved it. Kids are ******** annoying."

"Reading is fun!" Shu disagreed with a surprised tone, "I especially like those adventure fantasy stories, indulging yourself in another wonderful world helps to forget the awfulness of reality. Whoever made you to have that promise did a good job, I reassure you this is a fun series. Is this borrowed from the library?"

The petite girl giggled happily, "Ron shall learn that baby dragon is still dragon, not pet kitten, he did make repeated mistakes again and again." She shrugged. "I hope that doesn't count as spoiler. Norbert, actually sounds like how we pronoun carrot in Chinese. Anyway, have you watched the movies? They got half good half bad comments, but I think it's great to see how the scenes you imagined in mind realized."

She changed her pose to lean against one side of wall, still leaning forward, "I do wish I can visit Hogwarts one day." The dreamy expression told everything, sadly Shu didn't know the existence of a certain Harry Potter theme park somewhere or she will scream in happiness, acted like the annoying kid that Leslie hated the most.

"Stormy," was all he offered as explanation. The first part would go unacknowledged: Shu didn't need to know how long it took him to read and stay focused, or how words got mixed up when he both read and wrote.

Leslie nodded. "The first two, I think. Never really did catch the others though. Maybe one day. I like movies a lot more than books. Just in general."

He put the book away, not wanting to read in front of her just yet, not while they were talking. "Why? It seems pretty bullshit goody two shoes to me. Deus isn't perfect, but it's real. More buyable than some idealized dreamworld where the good guys win, or where there's good guys at all."

Stormy wasn't a stranger name, she was Noemi, her best friend's cousin. Thinking of Noemi, she hadn't seen her in a while, was she good? She was eager to know the progress between the two, the zombie mission ruined her mood for a whole week, hiding from everyone. She missed her a lot.

"Oh I went for the first one with my sisters and brother, I nearly ripped his sleeve, almost." Shu stuck her tongue out. "Maybe we can watch the rest together, Mr. Dwight may have them", she suggested, "Abbi too."

Hearing what Leslie said, he was given a waggling finger. "Leslie, a dream is called a dream because it's not real, don't ruin my little dream, okay? Answer to your question, because it would be fun watching stairs moving, flying on broom or casting a spell! I had a dream that I was a witch in the halloween world, enjoying the school life with friends." The girl chirped and clapped her hands, "I don't dislike Deus, it can be dangerous anytime but much better than where I was in the past, or else I won't join it at the beginning." Shu smiled gently and tranquilly.

"Here's my second home, I have my new family and best friend here. It's not perfect without some people's presence, but I am glad. It has nothing to do with what I wish or dream for." She stated her opinion. "By the way, Leslie, are you having difficulties reading? You were too close to the book, like - you want to know what it would smell." The soft tone filled with concern, furrowing slightly.

"Ehh, I guess. I'll ask her. Whatever." It'd probably be a yes, and then he'd be stuck watching movies with a bunch of nutter butter bitches. A small price to pay. Well, not small. But not an intolerable price.

Leslie pulled out his phone, tapping out a quick message to his partner in crime. "Yeah, well, maybe you should get your head out of the ******** clouds. This is it, Shu." He waved his arms, unimpressed. "There's no ******** point of thinking there's better."

At the question, the teen just looked at Shu, perplexed. "Doesn't everyone read like that?"

"YES please!" Shu cheerfully requested with prompt response. The reply for the message that Leslie was peeped unwillingly because she was standing while he was sitting. The full of hearts, starts emoticons post suggested to the Asian that it was more than 90% of a yes. Great.

Shu enjoyed both reading the book, then watched the movie and the process of comparing the two. Similarly, reading the manga and watching anime served as the same purpose to entertain herself. Movie had the merit of getting interested quick as it replaced the plain words of description with graphics, it enhances your imagination even yours is poor. Book, on the other hand, was good if you wanna indulge yourself into other word quietly. Both are good in Shu's opinion.

"Leslie. Does anyone tell you that you're too straight sometimes? You might offend people and get yourself into trouble. Thinking of something better strengthen my will to live, that's my way of survival. Have you ever think of why people want to live? Why you want to live? What gives you power to live?" The girl asked, questions that sound shallow and deep at the same time. "People say it's an instinct, but instinct for what?"

"No." A straight-forward answer. "The best is keep thirty centimeters from your reading material, but I guess not many actually follow that, never mind." She waved carelessly. "Ummm...if I am right, your eyes were at a distance of less than two inches with the book, that. is. totally. abnormal. You were like you wanna smell the book and you were squishing your eyes like what cats do."

Shu paused and looked at Leslie, "I think - it's time you need a pair of glasses."

"She says the movies aren't as good as the books, but she's in. Should get Stormy too 'n s**t."

Leslie snorted at her choice of 'too straight'. "I don't really care if I offend people, or if the way you survive is living in a dreamland. Your problem, not mine." He looked uncomfortable at her line of questioning. "I don't have any power to live. I just do. Surviving is just keeping on doing what you've always been, even if s**t gets in your way. That's all living is, none of this glamorous s**t."

He rolled his eyes, done with the topic, and pulled out a cigarette, lighting it up. "That's retarded, I don't need glasses."

"Typical comment of a book lover." Shu smiled. "Oh great, I haven't really talk to her face-to-face yet, you can text her?" The girl looked at Leslie with hopeful big puppy eyes.

The smile turned dramatically upside down, "But it'll get yourself in trouble, there're people that stronger than you, you'll get hurt. I don't want you to be hurt......" Her eyebrows knitted together and it remained as she talked. "I never say it's glamorous? I mean everyone has a purpose of living, if you're just doing routine things for survival, do what others tell you to - then what's a big difference between you and AI robot?" She asked with an innocent tone. "There must be something else that you don't wanna end your life, something supporting you to go on, yet you are not aware. I don't want to live in a dreamland, because it's not possible I know. I know my purpose of living, don't get me wrong."

Pouting like a duck, "You. need. glasses." Hands on waist, bent down to lean forward, "You look like you're intentionally irritating people when you squint, and when you squint, you look anger because your eyebrows were furrow in concentration." She pointed towards the place between her eyebrow. "That's bad enough." Shu leaned back and looked at Leslie, with a serious worried face.

"Yeah, yeah..." Leslie fired off a message to Stormy, too. "She doesn't check so much, so don't ride my a**."

Leslie barked an ugly sound of laughter. "There's worse trouble than pissing someone on the island off," he said, and did not elaborate, eyes hardening into flecks of grey ice. Russia was going to be something that stayed with him forever, a part of him. If he believed in souls, it would be a black mark upon it.

"And I don't want glasses, they're dumb." Full blown pouting fury had onset. "You don't know what you're talking about."

Meegane

"Ride your a**? What do you mean?" Shu gave Leslie a super puzzled look.

Leslie was a bit not-so-Leslie, at least the boil she knew, the ironic tone, the darkness.... "Did you have a hard time?" She said with the softest voice, Shu didn't mind having the discussion onwards, but not when her friend seemed to have a moment, she squatted and put her arms on knee, a harmless posture.

Leslie didn't tell about the red eye incident, so he didn't know Shu hurt her friend when she affected by the red eye status.

"They aren't dumb! Glasses are good and they help you to see things easier." She didn't mention the aesthetic aspect. "Considered how close you were with the book, you have serious short-sighted problem. Let's do a test." The book Leslie holding was taken away, opened randomly and pointed to a word. "Can you read out this line?" She held the book in front of Leslie, about the distance of a normal ruler.

Anger kitten puppy face didn't work on Shu, Leslie.

"You ever heard of the red eye s**t?" he asked, sharp, ignoring that first question for the sake of his sanity. It seemed like every time he talked with Shu, Leslie ignored about half of what she said.

Rolling his eyes, he crossed his arms as she took the book away, trying to make him read things.

"That line says 'That curb is now his, not silling in all alone.' ...Uh."

Okay. Fine. Maybe he couldn't read 'That car's new, he's not sitting in it alone.' from where he was. Big deal.
