~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They say like mother like daughter; like father like son.
Family was family, no matter what; you couldn't deny your past.
You could run from it, but what good would that do?
You were still just an apple on the tree.
Except, when you were the blossoming flower.
Life was strange sometimes.
One minute he was a young stallion, free to experience the world for all it had to offer, and the next, he was a father. One minute, his children were young foals, barely out of their baskets and the next, they were adults, fully grown and ready for adventure. He didn't want to admit it, but his father was right - he had a lot to learn still. The mare that he had accidentally gotten pregnant was somewhere, where, he didn't quite know, but...she was out there. They hadn't meant to get pregnant, but it happened none the less, and now...now he was a single father, still clueless with what the world wanted from him.
It was like it was yesterday. Bairn, his father, sent him on his merry way to grow up and have his own life. Yeah, he flirted with mares here and there, but he had no intention of ever settling down, or any of that fatherly stuff. He was just being himself, happily and alone, just the way he wanted. There were mares from time to time, that he spent time with, but he cared about them just enough to only want to see them for a bit, then he was off again. He was having fun. Or rather, he was living, and the stuff that happened was just happening.
Fun was a relative term. Did Boone really know how to have fun? Questionable, and if you asked his daughter, it would be a resounding no. 'Playtime' for a foal would have been running around, playing tag and laughing at the silliness of it all. Getting Boone to participate was a hard task, and it was only his daughter who ever really succeeded.
Yes, Boone had unintentionally and unwillingly become a father to a beautiful young lady, who got her way with everything. She had him wrapped around her hooves, and both of them knew it. Fortunately for him, though, Daisy Darling hardly ever used her power over him, and so he still had a bit of his sanity left.
If he ever thought his father crazy, well, now, he understood. Fatherhood was a tricky situation, and there was nothing in the world that would have prepared him for it. Even his sons, who grew up to be strong and independent young stallions had given the old guy a cause for concern. Were they okay? Were they being young and foolish, like their father may have acted? Boone needed to remember that his sons were going to be who they were no matter what, but it still left him wondering, just exactly it was that they were up to.
Although, to argue a point, if they were anything like Boone, they were probably just lazing around someplace, without much of a care in the world. Yeah, ha. He smiled to himself, thinking that happy little thought. The apple didn't often fall too far from the tree.
But when it did, you got Daisy Darling.
The old-guy stallion shook his head as he glanced at his quickly approaching daughter. They were nothing alike.
There was still so much to learn in this life, and yet, it didn't seem like there was enough time. She blinked, and she was a young adult! It seemed so positively wonderful that she was able to be her own kind, and do her own thing and yet, what was there to do! Oh! so many things! She giggled, mostly, as she trampled around the world, doing this or doing that, and loving every single minute of it. There wasn't any expectation of a curfew, or dangerous limits, or anything of that nature, and she was free! Free to do it all! It felt so amazing, to not have to answer to her father or her mother when choosing A over B; the trees over the plains; the mountains over the ocean...she had nothing and no one to hold her back and it was just great! Just great! The newly-free, very young mare loved who she was and what the world had to offer her, and there was absolutely nothing missing. It was happiness, and bliss to the end of the earth and back.
Except, she had really no idea what it was she was really missing.
Her father, as boring and monotone as he was, had a lot of knowledge to offer, if only she'd listen. He tried warning her of the evils of the world, but she told him she didn't believe in evil. He tried telling her to guard her heart, but she didn't believe in the concept of love. He tried telling her to slow down and smell the roses and well, life was meant to be lived! If she slowed down, what wouldn't she be able to do!?! Oh! It was simply not going to happen! Life was meant to be enjoyed, and if she slowed down, there may not be enough time to explore and do all that it had to offer.
Yes, that was her logic, and she was sticking to it.
Daisy Darling, as she was affectionately named (Daisy was her given name, but Darling was added by her father after her birth, so she went by Daisy Darling as an ode to her father), was indeed very different than her sire. She loved to explore, and laugh, and have fun and just enjoy things. He, on the other hand, was much more serious. He'd rather sleep or relax than get up and move. However, being who she was, she got him to do much more than he ever thought possible. There were a few times throughout her short life that she was unsuccessful in getting her father to join along, but sometimes....sometimes she could do it! She begged him to play tag, or go exploring, or anything, really!
"Daddy!" She beamed, catching up to his large frame as he stood there, staring at her. "Daddy! What do you want to do today? It's getting colder, but that doesn't mean we should just sit around!" Daisy giggled, nuzzling her father gently as she approached him. Yes, her life was grand and no matter what got thrown at it, she'd take it for what it was worth. Life had meant to be lived and she intended to see that through.
(Thanks for the invite to post heart )
Rio expression spread to a slow grin as he watched his little sister and father together. He shook his head as he trotted after the pair, stretching his wide wings out before tucking them back along his flanks again. This was his family and although they were small, maybe a little different, and didn't always understand one another, nothing could change the fact that they were family. Although he loved adventures just as much as his sister, he was a little more reserved when it came to expressing that to his father. Actually he was a bit more reserved than his sister in just about every respect. But what he lacked in self expression he made up for with stubbornness, occasionally creativity, and a genuine good nature.
His name was Rio Du Rhinehart - it meant river of the golden heart or something along those lines. Rio wasn't really too worry about it because he liked the sound of it, like some fearless knight from a far away land. And he liked rivers just fine too. As for the golden heart thing, well, that might be pushing it a little bit. But he did have a certain reputation for having a good heart, a decent conscience, and all. And he truly did prefer to do the right thing over dishonorable things.
"So is this going to be a family adventure, Dad? Daisy?" he grinned falling instep along side Daisy. "Personally I say a nice walk along side the river is always relaxing, as long as you avoid the gators and such of course..."
