Vorpal emerged from his creation filthy with soft black mud, patches of his fur sticking together in slick clumps. He spread his leathery wings to their full expanse and shook them lazily, showering the underbrush with a spray of dark flecks. He eyed the hole he had been working on for the past fortnight with eyes that swirled in a dizzying display, wondering, hoping that it was deep enough to do its job. He knew the portal wouldn't work for him, you had to stumble into one unexpectedly, thus he had begun digging in various places in his section of the forest, covering them over, and then hoping to forget about them eventually. Smiling at his own ingenuity, Vorpal gripped a fallen branch and dragged it over the opening. It was the first of many, he would cover the hole, tamp down some dirt on top of the branches and then sweep away the hoofmarks and other evidence of his presence here. The stallion snapped his jaws spasmodically as he worked, enjoying the click of his jagged teeth snapping together.

Hours later, the sky was bloody with the birth of the day. Vorpal could just glimpse it through the trees as he slid into the dark water with relief. He kicked off from the shore into the deepest section of the pond, letting his wings fan out to give him enough surface area to float with his legs curled up beneath him. He stretched out his long neck, and closed his eyes lazily, only his face and his back spines protruding from his watery resting place as he surrendered to a peaceful slumber, rocking gently in the subtle currents.

The day had started out much like any other, with the mini mare rearing to start a new day of exploration. Or hunting. Whichever term you preferred to use. She had spent the past several days in her ocean home, only heading towards the surface when her lungs began to whisper for oxygen. Today, however, she was feeling cramped - not that there was any lack of space in the ocean - and a strange desire to see if she might stumble across that damned stallion again! Who had been on her mind more of lately and she was beginning to think a good kick in that feathered butt of his was in order. Or she could make a trip to visit Anansi...

So, thoughts conflicted, Teagan had set out later in the morning to try and find a compromise. She would head in the general direction of the mini stallion she'd met and rather liked spending time with. But also keep an eye out for the larger stallion that plagued her mind. Plus, looking for interesting trinkets to take back home was always on the agenda!

Which was how Teagan found herself a little... lost. There had been this shiny thing, that turned out to be a crow, who had told her a tale of treasure, and then she thought she'd heard Noxious. Only to find herself feeling a little winded and deeper in the forest than she would of liked. But the scent of water was nearby. And strong earthy scents, of which she didn't care much for. The water was what she was sought now!

Vorpal's ears perked, swiveling towards the soft pad of hootbeats against the loam. He opened one eye as he lazily meandered towards the shoreline, stopping in water that was just deep enough to conceal the dark bulk of his body. He didn't often get visitors this deep in the forest, most knew to avoid it whether by word of mouth or instinct. The shadows were darker and more potent here despite the glowing mushrooms that carpeted parts of the ground and crusted the twisted trees. Although Vorpal had never killed anybbody... Intentionally, he did enjoy playing terrifying games, unfortunately his victims nearly always escaped to spread the warning to those who may have otherwise dared the twisty paths of the tum tum tree forest. For there were many sights, beautiful and strange to behold here were one to brave the dangers and the madness of those who dwelled within. Vorpal's tail lashed from side to side with excitement. Perhaps he would catch himself a friend today?

The secret to making this friend was to be very...very quiet. He didn't want to scare this one away... Not yet. The thought of the many holes both shallow and deep that were now scattered and hidden around his little lake didn't really enter his thoughts. He was too busy trying to penetrate the mists with his glowing golden eyes.

There was definitely something off about this place. She couldn't quite put her hoof on it, but even the fearless nixquilicorn felt a shiver go down her spine. She scowled at nothing in particular, not liking the feeling. "Ain't nothin' to be scared of!" Teagan said aloud to herself, stamping a small hoof hard into the ground. Snorting, she moved forward, continuing to follow the watery scent. Or at least she had intended to do so. The ground she walked on creaked a little funny, no doubt in response to her hoof stamping.

"What the... " Looking down, she saw her hoof had sunken into the ground somehow. And there was another crack sound. With a squeal of surprise, Teagan leaped to the side as she almost went down in a hole.

"HOLY SHELLS!" The small mare's chest rose rapidly as she looked where she'd just been standing. Inching closer, Teagan attempted to see into the hole. But there was still too much stuff covering it, for the most part. And she dared not get too close. Nope no falling in. Was that normal for forests? Granted, she had begun to think this one was a little strange... but she was limited on how many forests she'd been in. Still more than her family, she figured.

Well, no near fall was gonna scare her! Nope! She'd just be more cautious where she stepped. At least until she found the source of... oh hey! There it was. Her ears perked forward as she caught the glimmer of water. Looking at the hole behind her and the water in front of her, she stuck her tongue out at the hole and made a dash for the water's edge, halting right at the rim with her front feet entering its cool murky depths. Water was calming. And familiar. The fact that something large was floating nearby didn't register her thoughts. She just took a deep breath and looked from side to side at the strange things around her.

Bubbles escaped Vorpal's nostrils as he heard a yell not far off. Someone had clearly found one of his little surprises. His ears swiveled towards the noise and he edged foreword eagerly, had he caught something?

He wilted slightly as the little soquili careened towards his pond in a burst of adrenaline fueled speed. One eyebrow quirked, out of the pot and into the fire he thought as his mouth spread in a silent giggle. Ripples from his visitor's movements at the waters edge lapped against him, rocking him gently back and forth as he leisurely floated closer.... And closer.

His whirring violet eyes eagerly examined what looked like a very young soquili... And yet.... The proportions weren't quite right. Rather, it looked like an adult horse that had been squished down into a diminutive size. He caught sight of the finned tail and swished his own a little in unconscious recognition, sending his own ripples back to what he was now reasonably sure was a very small mare to tug and n** at her fetlocks. Vorpal was still laying flat against the surface of the water, his long fur arrayed about him in an odd shadowy cloud, his legs curled underneath him like some sort of absurd spider as he allowed his outspread wings to support his buoyant body.

He wondered if the little mare liked to swim...

Adopting what he thought was an artfully innocent expression, he drifted yet closer and smiled his biggest smile, his jagged jaw seeming almost to unhinge with the intensity of his ferocious friendliness. He didn't want to startle her, not too much anyways, so rather than say anything he simply stared at her expectantly and waited for her to acknowledge his presence. As was only courteous, after all. She had been the one who had stumbled, literally, into his home.

There was something odd about this forest, she decided, head tilting up to look at the tree tops. The feel of the water as it gently licked against her hooves was comforting. But the sounds she heard rustling about overhead... were not. Being born of the sea and land, the air and what called its domain home made her a little nervous. Why? She wasn't really sure, since no one with wings had ever bothered her or made her feel uncomfortable.

Suddenly there was a shift in the water. Nothing major, but she felt ripples brushing up against her. A gentle force that was like an answering call to her own little ripples. Teagan glanced back at the lake. And stared.

"Holy Oceans!" She gasped, jumping back to get a good look at... whatever 'it' was. "Yer massive!" Definitely bigger than Noxious. And so far, he was the biggest soq she'd met on land. And with a lot of teeth.

Teagan stared stupidly for another minute before her attitude shifted and she glared at the... big creature floating before. "S'not nice to sneak up on people, ya know!" Scared? Her? Never! At least not yet...

Vorpal rumbled his pleasure when the little mare started, jumping away from him. She stared at him with a mixture of surprise and anger. Although not fear, he scrutinized her a moment longer just in case but he was quite sure after another moment that he was not the source of her discomfort. At least, not yet.

He continued to gaze at her as he straightened his legs, water sluicing from his dark body and streaming from his jagged wings in a sudden downpour. He stretched, and then with a devilish grin, shook like a dog. Spraying the mare and everything around for a good few yards with brackish water. When he stopped his fluffy coat was mostly dry and he looked rather pleased with himself. Vorpal took a few steps foreword until he was on dry ground. "And you are puny." The stallion replied, not unkindly. He leaned foreword until his big wedge of a head was mere inches from her own, "I wasn't trying to be nice." He informed her idly, "Why would I be?" he shook his head with a derisive chuckle, "No, I was sneaking because it is fun, not because it is nice." His gaze swiveled around before settling on her again. "I see you missed my traps. Not very kind of you, no not at all. And after I went through all that trouble to make them. Ah well, its only a matter of time, I'll get someone eventually. The stallion was careful not to look at any of the carefully covered pits. This entire section of the tum tum tree forest was a veritable mine field of them. He cast a sidelong glance back towards the water, temptation tickling the corners of his consciousness. "I don't suppose you want to go for a swim?" His tail thrashed eagerly from side to side, the flexible spikes still glittering wetly in the gloom.

Ah, yep. He was big. Very very big. Teagan took a few steps back so she could see him clearly. Except her vision was replaced by the large wedge head. She blinked, turning her head from side to side to see which way allowed her to have the best view. Then she snorted. "I ain't that puny!" She informed the stallion, stamping a hoof. "Besides, I can handle most of those bigger than me." Her head tilted a little as she gave him a thoughtful look - though she kept a wary eye on him. "Actually, from what I've heard others say... I'm somethin' called a mini." Which... did kind of sound puny. Teagan huffed out a breath.

"Oh ya weren't, huh?" The small mare gave him a funny look. Why would he be? "Uh... 'cause it's the polite thing to do!" What was with this stallion? Teagan was starting to get an uncomfortable feeling. He was... strange. Then again... she chuckled. "Alright, I'll give ya that. Sneaking can be fun." Traps? Wait! He had set those traps out?! "Why'd you set those traps?" A pause. "Who are you, anyways? I'm Teagan."

He wanted to go swimming with her? Teagan's ears swiveled forward as she peered around him at the water. Hmmm... "Sure, why not!"

Vorpal simply smiled, "I'm sure you can," he purred reassuringly. "Hmm... A mini, you say?" He stared thoughtfully into the distance, "Mini, mini, mineeey, miiinay, meenee," he sang to himself in hushed tones before snapping his gaze back to his friend. "

"Nope," he responded brightly, his eyes whizzing first clockwise as he tilted his head to the right and then counterclockwise when he straightened. "Why would I want to be polite?" He let out a bark of laughter, finding the though enormously amusing. "It would be easier to sneak if I was smaller, like you." he admitted, quite kindly, his tail swaying back and forth lazily, the spikes near his fin leaving deep gouges in the soft earth.

His ears perked up, she wanted to go swimming? He gazed at her intensely...
She did! He did a strange little hop of excitement, fluttering his wings. No one ever wanted to go swimming with him, "Well, come on then!" he crowed, skipping backwards into the pond. The moment the water was deep enough, he launched his heavy black body into the deepest stretches, his leathery wings propelling him forward weightlessly and his tail acting like a rudder to guide his sinuous movements. He dove under water, chasing a terrified school of fish. He remained submerged for a few minutes and then popped his head up through the surface. Water streamed from his mane, a silvery fish was clenched between his jagged teeth, flopping weakly. He stared at the mini still on the shore and quite deliberately bit through the fish's spine with an audible crunch. Vorpal chewed noisily for a few minutes, his wings spread to keep him afloat. He stopped and tilted his head once more, "Its a little chilly, but you get used to it!" He called, his voice carrying despite his distance from shore.
