Hello! I hope your having a good day. Anyway my question might sound silly but I was always curious when creating items or illustrating concept art for items. How long does the process take?
This varies greatly between artists. The process can take anywhere between 3-10 days. Sometimes items require additional rounds of revision to make them more interesting! It depends on the artist, the theme, and the flexibility of the deadline.

If it's alright, may I ask which artists worked on which Scythes? Like the Nightmare Scythe, the Midnight Scythe Series, the Lunar Scythe, and the other varieties of Scythes out there. I'd love to know which artists share my love of the unique weapon type and it would be wonderful to add a section to the Scythe List for the Artists!
Right now, the only way to figure out which artist made which item is to check the individual artist's journals for item updates. Some of our artists prefer to remain anonymous as to which items they created, and we would like to respect their privacy!

Items How does an item become a reality? I've always been curious how these lovely artists begin and finish the item creating process.
It's a multi-step process. After coming up or being assigned a theme, the artists do a few rough sketches and it gets sent off for approval. The concept gets separated into poses, and then pixeled. After the pixels are approved, the artist finishes up the item by drawing out all of the various positions and angles as it fits on the avatar base, cuts the item up into all of the pieces to layer properly on our avatar, and then enters it into Gaia's massive database.
Hello, Um this may sound stupid but I was curious for the gaia artist's is there a particular art software that you like to use? for instance do you prefer adobe photoshop adobe illustrator or SAI ?

This question goes to the item artists exclaim
Have any of you ever designed/considered creating an item based on a user's style or OC? Occasionally an item will be released that makes me think, "whoa, the creator of the item must have been reading my mind! That's exactly what I wanted!"
I'm certain I've never been the direct inspiration for an item, but I sometimes wonder about other users! Are you guys reading our minds? Are you ever heavily, heavily influenced by one user?
The art team isn't heavily influenced by one user or artist that I know of- but many of them have their own OCs and have creative projects of their own that inspire the creation of items. We're glad that you like the items and feedback always helps our art team with new ideas!

What are the chances of Gaia online taking on volunteers for various projects. There are so many things that could be done with our beloved home here and we understand that at times staff falls short of being able to address every issue or request, yet there are a lot of talented people in this community who are capable and want to do it just because they care. Of course the only payment would be nothing more than a qualification reference for job applications and portfolios or credits. Just an idea..... I mean getting good references from Gaia Interactive would be amazing for some just starting out on their career path. Who knows, maybe you will find a few new permanent hires or outright geniuses,while getting issues and silly update demands resolved.
My Question is...
Would you consider taking in volunteer devs, artists, or admins?

Hi, I'm just wondering what qualifications you would have to meet if you wanted a job at Gaia, like, if we would need a certain degree. Could you give an example of what some people do during the day? I'm honestly really interested in working for you guys - it would be really interesting.
What people do during the day really depends on department, for example, artists will be doing lots and lots of art, devs will be coding everything you can think of, customer support are handling tickets and helping out users!

I would like to see the whole process from start to finish in creating an item for gaia. From idea to concept sketches to drafts to finished product. thanks for your time =D
It depends on the artist! Some artists will even do full on colored sketches before making the item, and then others will go straight to pixels. While we don't plan on releasing the whole process from start to finish -- you know, private company information and all -- many of our artists will post their sketches on their personal art blogs. A lot of changes tend to be made from concept to completion, so many of the sketches may look anywhere from almost identical to completely different than the finished product.

You are free to commission a Gaia staff artist outside of Gaia to create Gaia-related artwork for you. This is completely up to the staff artist's discretion with regards to price and timeframe. If you would like to commission a Gaia artist through Gaia currency, a Lapis Ticket will get you a coveted Gaia art commission! You can find more information in the Project Custom forum.

What takes longer Making ,Coloring, or Coding an item?
It definitely takes the most time to make and do production on a new item. Second would be recoloring and data entering takes the least (but still more than you would expect!!!)
Events When there are events on Gaia, do you celebrate at the office in a theme that matches the event?
Sometimes! We do things for Christmas and Halloween, but we don't have a Gaia Interactive Idol or anything like that. We should though.

Do the artists have a favorite color scheme they like to use while drawing/designing artwork/items ?
I personally usually start with values or if I have a palette in mind then I paint those colors onto my canvas first, so that I'm designing with that color scheme in mind. For the art team, it really does depend on the artist! Some people are like "Aw yeah definitely these colors" and others will create some value studies and then mock up their item concept in a few different palettes before settling on the one that goes to finals.
The recent monthly CI, Tendit ad Astra, features a bunch of WIP gifsets of our artist's illustrations and lets you get a little insight into people's processes. They're quite fascinating to watch, if I do say so myself! There's a handy user thread here that you can access to look at all the artwork.

Funny little idea, but it would be neat to see some items made to represent staff? I thought the April fool's day items were so great because they had personality- and it would be neat to see some of the unique ideas you guys could come up with, drawn really well. I'm a huge fan of unique looking items and I know it would be pretty fun for you guys to come up with ideas! ( Like, a 6 pose item representing Finni's love for bunnies for example, and anything else for other staffers- not like....looking like you guys, bc that might get a lil creepy for ya haha) Thought it might create some really cool unique items!
This is a great idea! A lot of staffers would love to have some sort of freebie item based off their own individual personalities, but I have to get all my work done before I can be doing extra for-fun items like this.
Sometimes, we artists manage to sneak in self-items.

No too long ago Gaia was hiring artists. However, the only people eligible to apply were the ones living in Canada or U.S. My question is: does Gaia have any plans on hiring people outside these two countries?
I'm sorry. Currently there aren't any plans to hire any artists outside of those areas for legal reasons.

So, I hear you moved offices again? Does that mean no more cool artwork on the walls? We had a very public move last time, complete with pictures and videos.. I feel like we don't have that level of transparency anymore (and certainly no NERF WARS videos). sad
We just hung up all of our art again! We are happily situated in a snug office with windows all around, and everyone's favorite part is that there's a little cafe right below us. What are the requirements to become an artist as far as working with recoloring items? Do you have to be 18+?

What tips would you have for someone starting out with semirealism? And what would be a good pen display tablet for someone on a budget?
Question 1: Yes, you must be 18+, because you do sign a contract.
Question 2: I would really look into going into realism first! This helps develop your eye. After you can draw realistically, you can take a nose for example and stylize it any way you like! Amazon has a lot of really good tablets for relatively cheap! I got a Huion for a really good price and it's pretty good!

*How do you become a professional artist? gonk I've been struggling with taking Gold commissions for so long and I just want to be pro like you guys. ;w;
Yayyy~ Welcome!
Honestly my biggest piece of advice is to practice practice practice! Anatomy, though super boring, is so vital and important. When you know how to draw something realistically you can draw it in any style you like, because you have the base idea of what the original thing is. For example a nose! If you know how to draw a nose realistically you can abstract it into any way you like! Anime nose, caricature nose, superhero nose.
That's my condensed version. BUT NEVER GIVE UP!
I started drawing gold commissions on Gaia too so it's a tried and true method lol (but I did also go to animation school and worked elsewhere in the industry first)
Most of my jobs came from references tho, so it's very much who you know.

what does one need to do to become an official artist on gaia? or maybe become a helper for when things get a little hectic.
for me, dani told me they were hiring contractors. i applied, did art tests, some paperwork, and then a few weeks of training!
just keep an eye out if they announce open hiring! it isn't often, but it has happened : O
oh...it sounds a little easy, I thought it was gonna be pretty hard. @ 3@;; I'll keep my eye out, thank you.

most of us use photoshop for items i know a few of us branch towards other programs for different purposes they provide like clip and such
the artists on gaia's team are actually varied in terms of how much schooling they had in the art field there are some with no education except self study and some with art degrees i don't think it's much of a factor if your portfolio is awesome?

I'm curious: How many staff do we currently have employed? (ex: 5 developers, 20 artists, etc. -- I'm more interested the number of devs since we've lost quite a few in recent years, but it seems like lanzer had brought back some?)
We have about 25 people in Gaia HQ. We're working on having CodeMonkey back in our team, and for now he'll be working with us on contracting basis with Gaia mobile app as priority. Once revenue stabilize, we'll start adding more developers. But as this is our first month back, we've yet to see where we stand as far as revenue versus cost, and the longer term effect of how things will look down the road. We'll be able to make hiring decisions after that. Stay tuned! whee

Do the admins grant themselves items from time to time?
I granted myself 60,000 items a few weeks ago! But this was only to test the new mobile app we are building. I've since deleted them. We usually only grant them if we have a reason. Otherwise, we would have to buy them just like everyone else.

There's no real difference now, but back when we had a larger customer support team we would differentiate the two based on the person's role and responsibilities in the company.

Are the devs using angular for Gaia?

We were just discussing that last week. I've been playing around with Angular since a few other devs have used it at Gaia. I'm not sure it is better. I don't like how many files it generates, and it seems a bit restrictive. I'm going to experiment with ReactJs over the weekend. Also looking into vue.

Thanks for the kind offer. Today there are about 20 people working in Gaia HQ and many work at home at certain days of the week, so you see about 15 people in the office on a typical day.

Yes, we are under the shelter in place for all of California. We are in the Bay Area so actually have been under it for 16 days already. Gaia has been great insuring our safety! We have all been working from home since the shuttering in place. It's caused a few issues (sorry last week's ATS!) but we have worked them out and hopefully should be able to keep going strong until this is over. We all are being safe and careful and hopefully you all will be too!

Is the Avatar Item Glitch Thread still monitored?
Heavily. Personally, I go through it and resolve any recolor bugs, whenever I have the time. But keep in mind there are a lot of artists not still with us, and it gets complicated to adjust their items~
somtetimes due to the artist not being with gaia anymore is it a case of "s**t i dont know how to update this/what part would need to be updated?" or more of a "dang, dont know if they did this for a reason, better not mess with it"
Me, personally? I look at it and go HOLY CRAP I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S GOING ON WITH ANY OF THIS. Again, I mostly do recolors, so my item experience is p r e t t y l o w. But sometimes other artists look and are afraid to change because it would also change things people LIKE about the item.
Take the vampire base faces for a perfect example -- I was a vampire for like ... 9 years, until VERY recently. The eyes/mouth drove me c r a z y. I wished items would remove them properly somehow so they wouldn't creep in there and mess up face mods.
But many other users love the weird faces on vampires, and use them to make strange, new combinations. Is it really fair for us to "fix" the eyes/mouth, if then it breaks what users have been doing for the better part of a decade on that item...?

I did pixel dolls in the dolling community for MANY MANY YEARS pre-gaia, so I did a ton of pixel stuff back in the day. Not so much now. Not even gaia items; recoloring takes up a lot of my time! But it certainly contributed to my hiring~

Are you guys excited for the holidays (christmas)?
I'm really excited for the holidays this year! It's my chance to make gifts (I'm doing a DIY gift exchange this year) and have an excuse to make tons of cookies. After Christmas my birthday is in January so it kind of feels like one long celebration haha. It's particularly exciting for me because I moved from Kansas to Ohio over the fall and I get to experience what the holidays are like here. I think Ohio and Michigan are sooooo pretty and I can't wait to see what it's like as winter gets here. I love snow and we have had multiple rounds of snow this month.
Plus I get to share the holiday excitement with you all on Gaia and our social media too. It's really a wonderful time.

Do the classic staff members like Lanzer, codemonkey, l0cke, etc. go into dressup anymore? I never see you guys change clothes, except for adding one item to promote a feature. It just feels weird that you guys don't engage in the dress-up part of the site on the front end, when it's one of, if not THE main feature of the site.
We just discussed it when we saw your question. We have come to the conclusion that we fall into that group of guys that pick a look and stick with it! We tend to do this in real life as well.

Will mini games link into prizes/tickets again (besides score boards, and prizes/achievements linked specifically to those boards) for the new games?
I had not had time for happy place since I came back to Gaia, but as I'm making some games for courses I teach, I will start putting them on that site. The artist like to pick games from there anyway to re-use on Gaia and I do want to have more mini-games ready for future use.

Sorry, nothing like that. Since I first came to Gaia there have been 3 offices and all rather modern well-lit places. However, right near what is now a popular shopping district is the Winchester Mansion. I've been about 3 or 4 times. It is super spooky! Do you know about it?
I've lived in San Jose over 20 years and have yet to go once. Hope you liked the visits though surprised (Ditto on somehow not going to Raging Waters)
I understand. I almost never go to the tourist spot where I live unless someone from out of town comes to visit. I lived in S.J. for four years, and I only went when we had out of town guests. Still enjoyed it though. Love the veggie grill nearby. Oh, now I'm hungry!

Hi There! Yes, I'm the only one working on the flash games and worlds. There are a few devs that do backend stuff related to towns (databases and apis). However, since flash is on the decline and will not work on mobile, my main focus will be to convert them to a html5 format.
I was working on events until last summer, but now events have been handed off to Kkkkris . Events are the toughest assignment on Gaia, because the time limit is set by the holiday. We can't change the date for Halloween for example. She is doing a great job, and I'm happy to be working on apps and games.

There are a lot of international gaians on the site and having all the promotions/announcements in the gaia time can be difficult for us to figure out when things are happening.
I would 100% LOVE if there was a clock page somewhere on gaia, that would just tell us what the time was for gaia HQ, so we can easily figure out how long the discounts are up for, or when the popcast will be happening. PLEaseeeee <3

Gaia HQ is indeed in San Jose. If I was in San Jose or San Francisco I could probably find a vegan Thanksgiving meal. I did live there when I first came to Gaia. As it is, I'm in rural Thailand. Monks do not come to the door. They leave their temples around daybreak and walk the roads short distances carrying their begging bowls. The villagers then scoop rice or place other food in their bowls. I get up early to connect with the office in San Jose, and always see the ladies walking home from the main road when I start work for the day.

So what does the Gaia Staff think of what happened to the GM plant(s) that removed about 15,000 jobs because the company wanted to focus on electric and autonomous cars? Do you guys like autonomous cars? surprised I'm sorry for all of the jobs that are going to be lost because of them, but I am kind of looking forward to being able to get around better because of them. emotion_bigheart
Just before starting at Gaia in 2011, I was living in Janesville, Wi. The GM plant had been there nearly 100 years. I have seen first hand what happens when GM leaves town. My heart goes out to the workers and their families.

Another Monday, another day to inquire, plead for some praying mantis related items. A pet with a I AM pose would be loved, but even a Mantis themed Strut or March would be met with much claw flailing.
Main Question: Is it possible for me to get the username of the Gaia Artist that snuck in the hidden praying mantis in Dirge's Serenade?
I've never been able to pin down who the artist for that item was, and my mantises would really like to give a special thank you to the artist in question.

What is the difference between "Gaia Staff" and "Admin". I mean everyone else has clearly defined titles above their avatars (like Developer / Artist / Admin Lead). It's like we aren't allowed to know what their role on the staff team is.
I don't personally have an answer—but I would love to be able to change what mine says! "Office Cutie" would definitely be my first choice title, "I do things" would be my second choice probably.

So...I'm curious. Does anyone, staff or other, watch the Outside Xbox/Extra Youtube channels? I've been introduced to so many games that I never would have thought about through them that I either got or am thinking of getting, such as Red Dead Redemption and Hitman (2016).
Haven't heard of that one, will check it out when I get a chance! Though you not having played Red Dead Redemption is a mistake! Hurry before part 2 comes out!
I got it in August and I've already 100% the main game and am working on Undead Nightmare at the moment. I need online partners for the multiplayer trophies though and bandwith issues makes it hard for me to play during typical times.

I can't see it yet. My husband hasn't seen or known of the ending for Super yet (we're watching the dub as it premiers on Toonami; I already know of it because it was harder for me to avoid spoilers, though), so he didn't want to go when it could've been spoiled. So we're going to wait for it to be released on Blu-Ray and seeing it hopefully closer/after we see the Super ending. >w<

Both of my daughters found Gaia and, being the responsible dad, I checked the site out. I thought it was pretty cool for them, and it kept them entertained.
About 3-4 years later I was doing contract work and the contractor said my new assignment could be for Gaia Online. I was like, "I know them!" and the rest is history...

While the Luke/Kylo fight was pretty awesome, how they treated the character of Luke was...well saying I hated it might be too strong...uhm, nah, actually that's right on. I hated how the badly the character was mangled for conflict purposes.

I sometimes tip Staff when they say something that I was hoping for, and it got me wondering, just how many tips do you get!?

Just a fun question: anyone else going to see My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising in theaters tomorrow? My hubby and I got tickets to see the dubbed version; I'm super excited! We missed out on seeing the 1st movie because, at the time, we were watching the Toonami dub premier and was afraid of it spoiling parts of Season 3 that we hadn't seen yet, but since this one shouldn't reveal much more than what has already been covered by Season 4 currently, I'm really happy that we get to see this one!

I am fine, but my daughter went to the emergency room yesterday because she worked in a place that was exposed (Stanford) and had symptoms. They put her through ALOT including getting tested including that for the Coronavirus and found out she ONLY had walking pneumonia! Sigh, that we are in a time where that is the preferable of the options! crying

Other Have you guys been cooking more or ordering out more since the stay at home orders?
I have never been much of a cook, tho I did try one of those everything in a bag meal service things. While I still wasn't in my element in the kitchen, I do have to admit the instructions were, for the most part, understandable (tho I did have to go look on their website at one preparation video - nice feature btw - in order to understand how to do a certain thing) and the food very tasty.
I didn't continue the service but am thinking on it possibly in the future.
