Opponent's block/ward do not apply.

In a multiple vs one situation reflection shield will only reflect the attack of the first opponent to land a hit, all other successful opponent's hits that round will land as normal.

In the aftermath of ‘lesson one’ in Araceli’s bedroom, Detraeus relished in every opportunity to practice his newly discovered range of skills, hone them, and expand through experimentation. He still refused to let her return any favors, but it pleased him immensely all the same to make progress, and it was — so far as he was concerned — an endlessly fascinating pastime with an infinite number of avenues for self-improvement and discovery on his part. When he was not busying himself with such activities, he was often training solo, fighting in the pit, or sparring with Casseth.

True to his word, the hybrid visited most every day since the first, and never once did Detraeus refuse his company. Casseth, for the most part, kept his wings mostly out of sight, to Detraeus’ relief and though things were not precisely what they had been, their old routines and habits came back to them easily as slipping into familiar shoes. It relaxed Detraeus, he found, and — while it wasn’t the absolute freedom of Ayr — he realized he was, once again, content. Happy.

With a last, resounding metallic clash, Detraeus and Casseth — previously engaged in a weapons spar — stepped apart from each other, each thoroughly winded and worn down from having run through a variety of different techniques. Detraeus set his practice blades aside with a grunt and a one-sided almost-smile.

“Better,” he said. “You almost hit me that time.”

Casseth huffed, panting. “I did hit you.”

“Once.”

“Once is once.”

“Once doesn’t count,” Detraeus asserted, turning to give Casseth his back and stalking over to where Araceli waited, watching. Behind him, Casseth scoffed.

“Once totally counts! How does once not count? It—”

“Once is luck,” Detraeus said, though his attention was now all but entirely focussed on Ara, and he caught her chin between his fingers as he stepped up before her, the corners of his lips edging up into a smile and tail coiling around to slide up her legs when he kissed her. “Hit me three times and it counts.”

“…and what’s the second time, then?”

“Mm.” Detraeus’ smile stretched broader into something verging on a grin, and he touched his lips once, fleetingly, to the juncture between Ara’s jaw and throat before turning to glance back towards Cas. “More luck.” One hand lingering at Ara’s waist, Detraeus lifted his water canteen to his lips and drank greedily.
PostPosted: Tue Oct 14, 2014 12:26 pm

Ara smile reflected Det’s as he kissed her. She hummed happily as he turned back to Casseth. Though things weren’t one hundred percent back to how they used to be, they were better and Detra seemed like a changed man as far as his happiness was concerned. It thrilled her that she was the reason for that happiness. Her arm snaked around Detra’s waist, in return, and she leaned her weight against him as she smiled at Casseth.

Cas snorted and rolled his shoulder as he looked away from the two of them. “Mhmm, I think you just don’t want to admit that I can hit you.” He grinned as he turned back towards Detra, posture relaxing instantly. He watched as Ara leaned against Detra, letting her weight rest against him, and smiled. No matter how much he saw it, it still amazed him that Detra allowed such familiarity from someone. Love, he supposed, changed your whole perspective on life. That’s what Detraeus had, too. Cas was happy for his friend and even happier that he had gone to Soudul after him.

Casseth turned away from the couple, giving them a bit more privacy as he fished out his canteen from his pack. He took a big gulp and as he lowered it, his gaze locked on to a familiar figure heading towards Ara’s house. Cas frowned, not having expected to see Lithian. His stomach knotted, nerves on end as he realized that he’d been caught. He gave a small, sheepish smile as he waved at Lith hoping, beyond all hope, that Lithian would not be too mad at him for not telling him about the sparring sessions between Detra and himself.

Lithian was not happy.

For all that he had tolerated Casseth eventually going after Detraeus — despite ample pleadings that he consider acting otherwise — he had known then that it was inevitable. Casseth had made up his mind and the matter was out of range of Lithian’s powers of persuasion. This, however, was different. This was Casseth, for obvious reasons, willfully withholding information from him, going behind his back, and throwing himself directly in front of the exact danger which had nearly got him killed three months prior.

He hoped he was wrong, of course. Hoped that when he arrived at Araceli’s house, Casseth wasn’t there, that he had misunderstood and Casseth was engaged in something entirely separate, innocent, warranted and reasonable.

He found Casseth with Detraeus, both shirtless and showing obvious signs of exertion, training weapons at their sides. Ignoring entirely the way the oblivionite’s posture stiffened at his approach — and, at least as pointedly, the possessive coil of his tail around Lithian’s other friend — Lith turned his focus to Casseth, and released a tempered breath.

“Casseth…what are you doing?”
PostPosted: Tue Oct 14, 2014 2:04 pm

Casseth blinked, staring at Lithian for a second before frowning. “Sparring,” he said simply. Cas sat his axe down as he made his way over to Lithian. He hesitated slightly, pausing a few steps away from Lithian. “What are you doing here?” Cas’ shoulders sagged at Lithian’s look. “You’re angry with me, aren’t you?” Cas fidgeted, shifting his weight as he ran a hand over one of his horns. “C’mon, we were just practicing...and Ara’s here…”

“Sparring…” Lithian repeated. He glanced away, narrowing his eyes at the heavens as he gathered his thoughts and curbing the urge to bite his lip, bunch his fists, or shuffle his feet. “You’re sparring. I see that. With the man who tried to kill y—”

“Problem?”

Lithian whipped around at Detraeus’ voice, and bunched his fists in spite of himself. For a moment, all he could see was Casseth prone on the arena floor, bleeding in the sand, Detraeus looming over him, blade drawn, and the ringing, burning, crushing pulse of the crowd’s chanting all around him: “Kill him!” “Kill him!” “Kill him!

He loomed over Detraeus now, over a head taller than him naturally, and his heart throbbed painfully in his throat, the corners of his eyes stinging as he grit his teeth.

“Yes,” he managed to say. “There’s a problem.” He turned and took a step forward. Facing the other fully and looking down on him, he watched his tail flick and his wings stretch like a territorial pidgeon. “You hurt Casseth once already. You don’t deserve his forgiveness. He shouldn’t have gone after you, but he did, and so here you are. I can’t change that. But I haven’t and never will forget what you did, and I don’t want you anywhere near—”

“I don’t care what you want.”

“You—” Lithian jerked forward, but was immediately restrained by Casseth, causing whatever he might have said to cut off with a frustrated snap. “Casseth, no, let me—”

“Do you want to fight me, taka’tha?”

Lithian’s shoulders bunched, posture rigidly stiff in spite of the fact — or perhaps partially due to the fact — that Casseth had yet to let him go. “What did you call me…?”

“It means…” Detraeus’ tail twitched again, “…stupid, spoiled, weak dragon child.”

“Casseth, let go—”

“If he fights,” Detraeus said, “…I make no promise not to hurt him.”

“Am I supposed to be intimidated?”

Detraeus shrugged. “Be what you will. All things bleed the same.”

Ara bit her lip and watched, knowing she could do nothing to stop the inevitable fight that was about to take place. If Lithian attacked first, she would not blame Detraeus for defending himself nor would she fault LIthian for doing the same if Detra were to attack first. She squeezed her eyes shut and bowed her head, praying to whatever god or goddess would listen to her. Ara did not wish either of the men, in front of her, to die that day.

Casseth held tight to Lithian. “Damn it, Lithian…” he muttered as Lith tried to pull free. “Think about what you’re doing. Detraeus is strong. Please don’t do this.” Cas’ fingers dug into Lith’s arms, doing his best to not let go and to hold him back. This was the last thing he had wanted and he cursed himself for ever keeping Detra and his sparring sessions a secret. When would he learn that secrets only caused problems in the end? He clenched his eyes shut and under his breath he muttered again. “Please Lithian…”.

Lithian frowned as he glanced back to Casseth. “I am thinking about what I’m doing. At least as much as you were when you went chasing a madman off to another continent.” With a quick jerk, serious this time, he dislodged himself from Casseth’s grip, and stepped away, over to where Cas and Detraeus had previously been sparring. “I am not stupid, or weak. And I have every right to not want my lover sharing the company of a man who tried to murder him.”

Across the way Detraeus bristled, the spines of his tail rippling as he moved to fetch his bow and strapped his quiver back on. “If I’d intended to kill him,” he growled as he moved to follow and stand ahead of Lith, “he would be dead. Remember that.”

Lithian struck first.

Detraeus watched the water draw up from the flasks at Lithian’s hip like snakes armed to bite, and prepared to dodge, nocking an arrow before the dovaa got in his first stroke. What he didn’t anticipate, however, was Lithian’s action strategy. He expected the crack of a whip of water, a wave, or some other similar offense. Something sharp. Something quick. Something real.

Instead, Lithian’s fingers fingers splayed, and so far as Detraeus could see, all the liquid water disappeared, evaporating into the air itself. The surroundings — moments before dry as the sand beneath their feet — became muggy, instantly damp, sluggish, and hard to breathe in. Grimacing, Detraeus shrugged off the change, aimed, and—

All at once, the humidity condensed, the latent water in the air congealing into a liquid blanket on his skin. In his distraction, his first arrow missed, and by the time he had another in his fingers, his pulse was diving into overload, the water crawling up his throat, over his face, and into both his lips and nostrils.

Panic kicked in.

He choked, staggering, attempted to snarl and dive forward but found the sound garbled and drowned by liquid. Everywhere, liquid. He dropped everything, fingers futilely scrabbling a the water on his face, but Lithian was across from him, expression still as a statue as his fingers lifted, twisted, and pushed, funneling the liquid deeper. Detraeus vaguely noted the wind picking up, screams like a distant echo — a backdrop to approaching blackness — and as his lashes fluttered, world darkening in at the edges, he thought of Ara and sent a prayer to Soudana for her safety.

His knees gave out, and he lost consciousness as his body hit the sand.

Lithian hadn’t intended to kill Detraeus. He hadn’t even, initially, intended to fight Detraeus. Despite his training, despite his choice to lead a fighter’s life in practice, he had made all his choices with intentions to heal not bring about damage, and he never truly considered himself a fighter, even once he became relatively proficient at it.

At Detraeus’ words, though, Lithian knew — momentarily — what it meant to be consumed by anger, to hate, and to want revenge. He remembered, as though caught all over again in the moment, what it felt like to watch the man across from hold Casseth’s life in his hands, the fear coursing through him, alongside rage, helplessness, anguish. And something in him tipped.

Some invisible scale slid from tentative, brittle neutral to something else altogether, and in the instant that he held Detraeus’ life in his hands, he recognized the first moment in his life where he might actually kill someone.

He couldn’t, though.

For all his hurt, all the pain of the memory, and all the fear, he knew — despite his words to the contrary — that Detraeus had made an active choice to spare Casseth’s life, more than once. He knew that — however much he disapproved of it and however little he understood it — Casseth considered Detraeus his friend, and Araceli loved the man. Araceli’s cry, combined with a sharp rise in the winds, cut into Lithian’s one-track conscious, jostling him back to reality from whatever blinded fog he’d sunk into, and he released a shuddered breath.

He dropped his arms, and relinquished all hold on his magic. Water spilled out, seeping from Detraeus like an opened canteen being allowed to pour across the sand, and it gathered around him in a pool, eerily reminiscent of blood under the circumstances, but not. He realized only belatedly that he was shaking, every limb in his body seeming to quiver as he stared at the body of the man who could have been dead by his hand.

Lithian felt as though he might be sick.

Araceli’s world began to crumble the instant Lithian’s water invaded Detra’s body. The wind whipped around her as Detra went down, a scream tearing from her lungs at the same time. Before she even realized it, Ara was moving and had Lithian not relinquished his hold on Detra, she very well might have become involved in the fight. She dropped down to her knees, her wind dying down as a sob escaped her lips. “Detra…” Ara’s fingers brushed over his cheek, down to his neck to check for a pulse. When she felt the beat of his heart her body sagged, nerves relaxing and tears finally falling. She shifted, sitting down on the wet ground and moving Detra so that his head was in her lap. “Please wake up...Please…” She bent over him, lips touching Detra’s forehead as she squeezed her eyes shut.

Casseth moved up next to Lithian, hand resting against one of Lith’s arms, watching the scene with Ara unfold. When he felt Lithian shake, Cas’ attention focused fully on the man he loved. “Lithian…” He had known Lithian was strong, could take down dragons easily. Had even seen the man drown a beast from the inside. He had not expected to see the same move used against Detra. “Maybe we should...go?” Cas frowned as he turned his attention back to Detra. “Will he be alright?”

Ara’s shoulders stiffened, back going straight. “He had best be alright,” she growled but didn’t turn around to face the pair.

“I’m sorry…” The words fell from Lithian’s mouth barely above a whisper the first time, then multiple times in succession, louder. “I’m sorry—I’m sorry, I—he will be alright,” Lithian said, stepping forward on instinct. “I didn’t damage anything internally, and I can—”

Don’t touch him,” Araceli snapped when Lithian attempted to crouch, the desire to heal filling in automatically now that the fight was over.

At her tone, though — sharp, brittle, and cold — Lithian winced, guilt knotting deep in his gut. “Ara…please, I…”

Detraeus coughed, sputtering, and then groaning as he rolled over, dry-retching and gasping as he shook into consciousness. Lithian took several darted steps back, nearly tripping over himself in his effort to make space. With one, uncertain glance to Casseth, Lithian bit at his bottom lip, turned, and left.

This was not the place to stick around.

Detraeus, meanwhile, shuddered, wincing at the burn in his throat and shaking his throbbing head. “Ara…?”

Casseth winced at Ara’s tone, watching helplessly as Lithian fumbled. When Lithian turned to leave, Cas stepped towards Ara, crouching and placing a hand on her shoulder. “If you need anything...let me know, yeah?”

“Just leave,” Ara said, pleading for Casseth to leave them alone. He rose, smoothing his hand over Ara’s hair and giving Detra one last glance as he started to wake up. Ara didn’t dare move as she listened to Lithian and Casseth retreat. Her body shuddered, resolve cracking the instant she heard Detra’s voice. “Shh, I’m here Detra.” Ara brushed her fingers over his cheek, murmuring to him as he came around.

Detraeus opened and shut his eyes several times, shaking the dizziness from the edges of his vision and then frowning. That…had not gone as he’d intended. He registered Casseth and Lithian retreating on a passive level, and his mind continued to loop back through the battle — so short it almost felt surreal. He grimaced. And embarrasing. Perhaps Casseth’s chosen intended was accomplished at more than growing an impressive rack of horns after all.

Then, Ara’s state registered with him, and he stiffened, immediately staggering up to an unsteady sit. “Ara. What happened? Are you alright? Did he hurt—?”
