He wondered how long it had been.

How long it had been since he'd seen anyone.

How long it had been since he'd talked to anyone.

How long it had been since he'd talked at all, unless one counted the talking to himself, inside of his own head. Days, weeks, months; they all slid together, the lines blurring until there was no actual distinction between them. He supposed it would be a good idea to get out of his apartment, to get fresh air (he was running out of food, at any rate), but dragging himself up and out meant using energy he didn't really have anymore.

And he kept telling himself one more day.

Just one more day. He'll be back, I know it.

Except "one more day" had stretched into days, weeks, even month, and still Fritz St. James, Celsus Knight of Chronos, had yet to leave his apartment. The duties he'd once held had long been forgotten, abandoned, left to dust, as though he'd never even been a Knight at all.

Besides, it was not as though anyone had even noticed or cared, Celsus reasoned, somewhat manically, with himself late in the evenings as he sat rocking back and forth on his couch. Bottles of alcohol sat empty all around him, some staining the floor with the last remnants of their liquid. It was not as though the Zodiacs were something to fight for anymore, and it was not as though Chronos was even around.

Chronos. Just the name alone left a bitter taste in his mouth, an ache in his chest that couldn't be eased so easily. Celsus wrapped his hands around his head and sank down to the floor in front of his couch, his legs drawn up tightly to his chest, his forehead against his knees. A dry sob escaped his throat, but there were no tears; he'd long since used up those.

Everyone left eventually, he reasoned, as he gripped the neck of an empty vodka bottle. Tolliver, his twin, his other half, had disappeared into the midst. Chronos, with her kindness and her grace - she had abandoned him too; had left him to the wolves of reality. Everyone was gone now.

It didn't really matter anymore if he left too.

You've abandoned your post.

It was a constant whisper in her mind that plagued her every single minute she was on campus and far, far away from Destiny City. It was also a distraction she could not afford; it was not ideal for a musician to be preoccupied with other thoughts for that would evidently show in the music they were playing. Drowning herself in composing also did not help; all Serenade could come up with was a tinny melancholy tune, which proceeded with her smushing her face against her table in exasperation.

When she returned to Destiny City for the weekend, she was filled with both dread and longing. It hadn't yet fallen, no, but there was still in Chaos lurking in its depths. It had been years since she had been awakened, but she still had not figured out a way to drive it away.

She wondered how they were doing without her. How her Court was doing without her. She had explained her situation yes, and seen some of them on the Surrounding, but some had been scarce.

And so came a knock on Fritz's door. Three tentative raps, and she waited.

The knock on the door startled him out of his inner musings, out of a lot of things he didn't really want to think about. In fact, if he didn't know any better, Fritz would have thought it to just be just another alcohol-induced hallucination, but he hadn't drunk anything in the past several hours. His previous binge had already worn mostly off, which meant that there was actually someone at the door.

For a brief moment, his heart leapt at the thought of it perhaps being Tolliver - but in the next second, that hope ebbed rapidly and coldly away, because Tolliver wouldn't have knocked, he would have just come barging in like he always did.

Fritz debated not answering, but then he let out a little grunt and dragged himself to his feet, brushing off his jeans with a movement that was more out of habit than an actual desire for cleanliness. He crossed the room a little unsteadily, fiddled with the locks and flung open the door with a rather annoyed expression on his face.

"Yes, wh - "

But then the words died in his throat, along with his breath. For a moment, Fritz stood there, utterly stunned into silence, his eyes wide, his freckled face paling beneath the dim lighting of his loft apartment. He stumbled back several steps in shock, mouth feeling dry, and he couldn't seem to take his eyes off the figure in the doorway.

"You - "

Proper sentences were hard to formulate. Fritz himself no longer looked like the cheerful, redheaded painter he'd once been. His hair was too long and messy, hanging in limp locks on either side of his face, which was smudged with something that looked like dirt. There were dark circles beneath his eyes, and his glasses were slightly askew on the end of his narrow nose.

He was hallucinating. That had to be it, that had to be what was happening. She was gone, everyone was gone.

"You're not real," said Fritz, a note of desperation in his voice. "You're just inside of my head."
