They had finally been released from the cave. It had taken forever, and both woman and dragon were eager to get out. Their first stop of course was the nearest water source to give Tiaeth a proper bath. The bronze had complained bitterly at the lack of proper bathing in the cave. She certainly hadn't blamed him since she knew what he was use to. Vosin had gathered up all the things needed to bathe a dragon. Thankfully the weyr hadn't changed the location of where they kept their bathing supplies or she'd have been looking forever. The pair was attracting quite a bit of attention from the current residents of the weyr. Everyone was interested in the mini-dragons. Vos loved the attention. Naturally she'd picked a spot where they could be easily watched. "Alright m'boy. Time to go get wet." She bent to sort through and pull out soapsand and rags. Tiaeth gave a brassy bugle, which ensure that if attention hadn't been on him before, it was now. He leaped up and dove with delight into the water; nearly soaking Vos on the shore in the process. Commenting to his rider how good it felt, he paddled around and occasionally blew blasts of water into the air.

Vesresh had just been introduced to his foster family: It had meant being taken from the infirmary – which had almost become home - into a private room and talking to a pair of lower weyr workers who had offered to take him in. They were strangers, and it was a strange world, and he could only imagine the horrors and wonders that lay outside the door. In fact, after the interview, he hesitated at the door. What would he see? Where would he be? He was disappointed to find that the future was much the same as the past. Things did not look as strange or alien as he had been expecting. A weyr was still a weyr, and – though this was not Benden – it still felt familiar. He could see the weyrlake from where he stood and, in it, a familiarly-patterned shape: it was one of his sister's dragons, though the shine from the bronze hide made it difficult to tell which one. Still, he needed family, and he needed to tell them about... well.. the others. Nervous, even so, about taking a step into the 'new' world, he haltingly made his way to the weyrlake. “Vesin?” he called, “Vosin?” he could see a sister, but only from behind, making it difficult to tell.

It is Vosin, a cheerful voice informed the boy as another sprout of water sprayed up into the air.The woman stood with a hand on her hip as she waited for the dragon to exit the water. "Any day now..." She paused as she heard someone call for her twin and her. Shading her green eyes, Vos looked around until she saw the boy coming toward her. "Hey Erse. Managed to free yourself hm?" She glanced over him to assure herself no harm had come to him while he'd been away. "What do you think of this place so far? At least they keep the dragon supplies in the same place." She grinned holding up the rags. They hadn't been too hard to find. She just looked for the things often next to the supplies and she found them. Otherwise she might have needed to get Ves to help her. Tiaeth lifted his head from the water to wait the pair, though he showed no sign of wanted to come out of the water yet.

It was – as it always was – a little bit startling to have a voice in his head. He was getting used to it – the dragons had often spoken in family member's heads (especially his) when they had been in Benden, and had done it when the twins had returned. It was odd to have it happen, though also familiar. He recovered and made his way to her, giving her a big hug: They had only been separated for a little while, but already he had – he realized now – been afraid to lose her. Vesin would be somewhere too, somewhere else, likely, and Esre wanted her around too, but he was just so grateful for what he had. “Hi Vosin...” he released her from his not-quite-bone-crunching hug and turned to the dragon, “Hi Tiaeth...” “I... Its...” he hesitated, holding his hand out for a rag – he liked to help with dragons – they always made such pretty poses. “It's not what I was expecting, I guess...”

DraconicFeline Is it soapsand or sweetsand? >.< Vos grinned and leaned down to return the hug. She felt her back pop from the force he applied. Was he getting stronger? "Woah, I don't normally get that kinda greeting when Ves' around" A grin showed she was teasing him. Sometimes she thought Esre liked Ves a bit more, but she never held it against the boy or her twin. Times like these showed her he loved her too. "Mmmm I'd say that's a safe assumption." She tilted her head to the side with a raised eyebrow. It was hard to know what to expect from the future. "I didn't think you'd have to have a foster family," the look in her eyes proved she still disliked the idea completely. "You have any problems, you come to me or Ves." She looked down at him to ensure he'd promise. Family stuck together no matter what. "You met them today right? How'd it go?" The woman would have something to say to the weyrleader if they tried to mistreat her brother in any way. The woman grinned and passed a couple of rags and a bag of soapsand to him. She jerked her head toward the dragon in the water. "Why don't you see if you can coax him out of the water?" Good afternoon Esre. How was your day? The bronze looked suddenly more interested at the sight of rags changing hands. The prospect of having two scrubbers was definitely appealing to Tiaeth.

magnadearel I'm not having esre eat it to find out Vesresh hadn't thought he needed a foster family, either. He had a brother, and his sisters and, though he missed his parents dearly, blood family was what you needed. Blood family stuck together. But the decision had been made already, by people who were very important. He could tell she was teasing and smiled at her comment, nodding. “They seemed nice.” he said. He hoped they were, anyway. He didn't know what else to say, other than that they were people. “I think they work at the stables... at least one of them does.” He wasn't sure: he had spent most of his time trying to be brave and not cry. He didn't think it had to be said that, if anything happened, he'd be running to his sisters to protect him. He didn't think anything would, though. It was not so hard to smile now, as Tiaeth greeted him. “It's good now!” he said, much more relaxed than the start. This was more like how he had imagined his sisters visit would go, back... hundreds of years ago. He held up his rag and the bag, “If you come out of the water a bit, Tiaeth, I can get your...” he felt, suddenly, very short – not a surprise. He wasn't at his full growth yet. “Your belly, at least!”

She ruffled his hair. They'd play along for now. Vos glanced at him, "I realize they probably don't know much, but keep your ears open Esre. Maybe you can learn something about these people that they wouldn't well riders like Ves and me." Undercover brother, no one in their right mind would suspect timid Esre. She specifically wanted details on the political situation. People tended to close ranks against an outsider, and she was afraid they were missing something important about the time here. "If nothing else, you can try to make friends here your own age." She grinned as he tried to coax the bronze out of the water. Tiaeth watched the siblings with his eyes whirling blue. I can kneel down so you can reach higher, he replied. The dragon sloshed out of the water, though he picked up his feet near shore so too much didn't run toward the humans. To Vos though he allowed Esre to hear, that is the worst kind of bribery Vos. He blew a wet blast of air at His before he remembered she was right next to her brother. Sorry, Tiaeth said sheepishly, hoping he'd still get his scrub. The bronze stretched himself out on the dirt and hummed.

magnadearel Esre, James? Esre, Agent 00pern *theme song plays* Did Vosin just ask him to do a mission? Was she asking him to be some sort of... secret spy? Vesresh's eyes widened and he nodded, though he had little to no idea what he would be listening for. “I'll tell you anything, Vos.” he said, and he meant it. He'd probably just have some useless stuff to tell her in the end, but for his heroic sisters... He was willing to try anything. As for friends his own age... He'd had few enough proper friends before. Oh, the others had liked him, but he had kept mainly to himself, especially after Vosrik had aged out, sketching the other children and watching them play. Occasionally, he'd join in, but they always seemed like they were one step ahead. “I'll try.” he said, “Tiaeth, that would work really... hey!” he exclaimed, as he was suddenly misted with dragon-breathed water. He shook it off of his hand and gave Tiaeth a playfully affronted look, “I'm gonna scrub your belly first, just for that!” he said.

DraconicFeline cat_rofl Best reference ever! Vos grinned and patted him on the shoulder. "I know you will. It's why I count on you." One advantage of him living with a foster family at least. He could hear the little gossips and rumors. As a young boy he could so easily be overlooked. Anything he could bring her might be useful in cluing her into something bigger. "That's right. Be stern and show him who's boss." She laughed and picked up her own rags, attacking a wing with firm strong strokes. Tiaeth groaned as Esre got him back. Just be careful I'm ticklish there. He raised a wing and rolled slightly so his belly was facing the boy. The dragon turned into a puddle as the people started washing. This had to be his favorite part of the day. Particularly so because he had two working on him.

He would have to be attentive – pay lots of attention... talk to people? Strange people? Strange future people? The idea was terrifying. But it was for Vosin and Vesin, and he loved them. So he'd try... that was all he could promise. He laughed. “Isn't he the boss?” Esre joked, scrubbing the bronze's shining, mottled belly, “And I intend to tickle you, Tiaeth!” he said, giggling a little bravely, fiddling his fingers on Tiaeth's sensitive stomach before going back to polishing the bronze. “You splashed me, after all. With dragon spit.” Overcome with giddiness, briefly, he gave him a little kiss, “I forgive you though...” he blushed, “Er.” he looked at Vosin. Was he allowed to kiss the dragon? He could give her a kiss on the cheek, because she was his sister, and the dragon was bonded to her, but had he done something stupid? “Um.”

She focused on scrubbing until the bronze started twitching. Vos stepped back and peered around Tiaeth to see Esre tickling him. Sometimes she wondered who really was the boss, though she knew it was a partnership for them. No one was better than the other, and that's how she liked it. "Sometimes I wonder when I spend ten hours a day scrubbing his hide." Vos cackled as she caught her brother kiss the dragon then get embarrassed by it. "Better be careful! If you keep that up he might decide you're his rider." She winked and tried to keep her chortling down. Tiaeth tried not to squirm at the tickling, but he did make some funny noises. I surrender I surrender! No more dragon spit for you Esre, though I hear its good for your complexion. The dragon rumbled affectionately. He loved Vos and her family.

Vesresh blushed. “Really?” No, of course not. He's her dragon. he admonished himself. “I mean...” he corrected quickly, “Does my complexion need it?” A dragon deciding on a different rider... It would be rude to suggest such a thing, of course. And wrong – horribly wrong. Dragons were with their riders. That was how it worked. But what if there was a story like that? It would be a sad story, he bet... But only a story. “You have very soft hide, Tiaeth...” he remarked, petting it in between scrubbing, watching the sheen relfect on his fingers... “Vosin?” he said, hesitatingly, “Do you think... um...” he trailed off, falling quiet. It was a hard question to ask.

Vos gave a laugh. "He only says that so you won't be mad at him." She reached up to scratch his eyeridges, making the bronze close his eyes and hum. "What is it Esre?" she leaned on the large bronze head as she heard the hesitation. "If you can't ask me, then who can you?" Privately to the boy, Vos is my rider, but you are my friend. While he would never have another rider, that didn't mean he didn't enjoy being with others.
That is due to all the attention you've put into my hide. Though you've missed a spot a bit higher up on my side. Tiaeth moved to lay on his belly and fold up his wing so Esre could reach his side comfortably.

Esre was glad to know that the big dragon was his friend – though he already knew it. It was just nice to 'hear'. “Oh, sorry.” he said, standing on the balls of his foot to reach the spot, burnishing it to a lustrous shine. “It's just... Vosin... do you think we'll ever... Do you think...” he swallowed, moving the words around his mouth a little before he dared to say them. “Do you think Mom and Dad are...” no, they were in the past, as impossible as it was to believe. “..were... all right?”

It would figure he would ask this here when Ves wasn't around. She was sure her twin would have a better answer than what she could come up with. Except Ves wasn't here and he'd asked her. So she would have to come up with the best answer she could. Her first thought was to tell him they'd be fine. There was no way to verify that though. Tiaeth couldn't reach their parent's dragons that far back. Sweetness only lasts for so long Vos, the bronze commented to his rider alone. He could tell the boy was worried. I know, and she did. Esre wasn't totally clueless. The fact he was asking this question now told her. "I'm worried about them too, but there's nothing we can do for them now," she decided to answer up front with her brother. "We left in a pretty hairy situation back there. Now as they didn't ride bronze or gold, maybe they got away. I can't say." It was hard. Knowing they'd never see their parents again. It had been one thing for Ves and Vos to leave the weyr, but they'd always known their parents were still at Benden. She had done as her parents ordered and gotten them all to safety.... of a sort. Emotions wrung her heart as she realized she could never go to them again for advice. She felt Tiaeth croon soothingly. And what about Esre? He would never know his parents growing up, and going to them with problems like he should have. "I'm sorry Esre. That's the truth though." She held out her arms to her brother for the hug she figured he'd want after that revelation. Though maybe he'd already come to the realization and just needed to hear it out loud.
