Bukimisawa Marshes

User Image
As soon as you leave Rankusha-sensei’s laboratory, you find yourself in this gloomy swamp. I can tell you right now, I am not going down there without an ANBU squad no matter how much you pay me. This area is filled with rejects from Rankusha’s experiments that are roaming free in the marshes. He had been warned a few times in the past to stop releasing these things in the wild; however, given the new political situation, having an area bordering the Land of Grass and the Land of Waterfalls crawling with dangerous genetic freaks was found to have its uses. There are a few areas here that were once inhabited but they are now largely deserted.

The noteworthy landmarks here are a forward recon post that is vaguely maintained. It has basic medical and field equipment if needed. And the old Ketsukokkyou border that has been sealed off because of the tensions and the freaks that kept pouring through. THis border is a common border between the Land of Grass, the Land of Waterfalls, and the Land of Stone. It takes its name from the massive quantities of blood that were spilled during the numerous wars that occured between these three nations.

Description of encounters

Chimeras
User Image
The chimeras are the twisted result of some of Rankusha’s experiments following his order to work on creating the ultimate ninja companion to rival with those found in enemy countries. These often strange creatures, when qualified as unsatisfactory, are released in the marshes to roam and fend for themselves.
Type of attacker: Generate a random number between 1 and 100
01 – 40 : Hybrid of 2 regular beasts
41 – 80 : Hybrid of 3 regular beasts
81 – 95 : Hybrid of 4 regular beasts
96 – 100 : Unique encounter (speak to crew)
Attacker’s levels: 20 – 25
Equipment: none
Fighting style: Variable (will have style of all the beasts in the chimera)
Special: Variable (will have special attacks and/or abilities of all the beasts in the chimera)
Handle Animal DC: Same as toughest animal in the chimera’s DCs to tame and deter +10. Must know how to tame exotic creatures to tame.
Reward:
If physically defeated: Attacker’s level x 5
If scared off or tamed : Attacker’s level x 2.5
Notes: These creatures are usually very strange and can range from incredibly dangerous to ridiculously unfit. I wouldn’t want to find myself against a bear/cobra chimera but wouldn’t mind so much with a bird/turtle…

Lycanthropes
User Image
Lycanthropes are failed experiments at melding human and animal DNA in order to enhance an individual’s physical or mental attributes. The rejects usually reverted to a far more feral form, making them a lot more animal than man and extremely aggressive.
Type of attacker: Generate a random number between 1 and 100
01 – 30 : Feral Regular Subject
31 – 60 : Mad Regular Subject
61 – 85 : Feral Shinobi Subject
86 – 95 : Mad Shinobi Subject
96 – 100 : Unique encounter (speak to crew)
Attacker’s levels: 23 – 28
Equipment: none
Fighting style:
*Feral subjects: Fight purely as their animal part.
*Mad subjects: Will use traditional attacks as well as animal attacks.
Special: Variable (will have special attacks and/or abilities of all the beasts in the chimera)
Handle Animal DC: Only for feral, same as animal in the lycanthrope to deter +10.
Seduction DC: Three successive successful seduction checks of 30 to deter from attacking you.
Reward:
If physically defeated: Attacker’s level x 10
If scared off or tamed : Attacker’s level x 5
Notes: Fearsome opponents, they are a part beast/part man hybrid usually bordering A LOT more towards the beast. The most dangerous ones are those that were shinobis since they tend to have kept their fighting skills, and sometimes even their skills at using jutsus..

F.E.T.S. (Failed Elemental Test Subject)
User Image
One of the primary areas of experimental research is the study of complex elemental nature of chakra and the various ways of “implanting” them into subjects. If some can prove quite successful, many attempts are usually required to get one formula right for one specific individual. That’s what happened to these wretched creatures. Grossly deformed, often driven mad to the point of near feral intelligence, their unstable degrading bodies are elemental bombs constantly discharging chakra, making them extremely dangerous.
Type of attacker: Generate a random number between 1 and 100
01 – 30 : Feral Regular Subject
31 – 60 : Mad Regular Subject
61 – 85 : Feral Shinobi Subject
86 – 95 : Mad Shinobi Subject
96 – 100 : Unique encounter (speak to crew)
Attacker’s levels: 20 – 30
Equipment: Basic equipment found on regular individuals. Shinobis can still have some basic ninja equipment on them.
Fighting style:
Feral Subject: Feral, will not block or use complex fighting maneuver.
Mad Subject: Extremely aggressive but still vaguely conscious and able to fight “traditionally”
Special:
*Living Element: Can use all elemental jutsus up to C-Rank for regular people and B-Rank for shinobis (Note: if no general jutsus exist for that elemental nature, you may tap into custom jutsus for the encounter, such as those made for clans or for characters’ limits).
*Elemental Essence: Creature uses elemental jutsus for one less attack turn and at 25% chakra cost. Cp cost is also taken as Hp damage.
Seduction DC: Three successive successful seduction checks of 30 to deter from attacking you.
Reward:
If physically defeated: Attacker’s level x 5
If scared off: Attacker’s level x 2.5
Notes: These encounters are usually very intense but very brief as these creatures tend to burn out pretty quickly once they get riled. The most dangerous elemental subjects are those that were once shinobis since many of them have working knowledge of ninjutsu, making their attacks a lot more efficient than that of regular people.

Genetic Aberration
User Image
The by-products of various experiments to increase the body’s various attributes. Often extremely deformed, these often seem to be taken directly from one of your nightmares and set out to roam in the swamps. They are extremely diverse given the largely varying attributes the experiment aimed at increasing, making them very unpredictable.
Type of attacker: Generate a random number between 1 and 100
01 – 30 : Feral Regular Subject
31 – 60 : Mad Regular Subject
61 – 85 : Feral Shinobi Subject
86 – 95 : Mad Shinobi Subject
96 – 100 : Unique encounter (speak to crew)
Attacker’s levels: 25 – 30
Equipment: Basic equipment found on regular individuals. Shinobis can still have some basic ninja equipment on them.
Fighting style:
Feral Subject: Feral, will not block or use complex fighting maneuver. Does not use fighting skills.
Mad Subject: Extremely aggressive but still vaguely conscious and able to fight somewhat “traditionally”.
Special:
*Physical Aberration: Has no cap on stats. Stats are generated at random (between 1 and maximum number of stat points to be distributed for its level. Total of all stats cannot exceed the maximum number of distributable points however. Note: Hiru has an Excel formula to generate these types of numbers if you need help)
*Disgusting Appearance: +10 to intimidation checks. -10 to seduction checks.
Seduction DC: Three successive successful seduction checks of 35 to deter from attacking you.
Reward:
If physically defeated: Attacker’s level x 10
If scared off: Attacker’s level x 5
Notes: Those are strange, horrifying creatures. Depending on the cocktail they were injected with, they can be extremely dangerous or total jokes. They quite frankly scare the bejeezus out of me…

Foreign Science Units
User Image
Obviously, an area filled with experimental subjects can be a gold mine for any scientist, especially in a time of war. It is very common to find enemy science squads scouring the area, or to see some of their corpses floating in the swamps at least. Usually travelling in small groups, the scientists are normally escorted by one or two skilled shinobis. In general, they tend to prefer stealth to confrontation in order to avoid diplomatic fallout from their incursions.
Type of attacker: Generate a random number between 1 and 100
01 – 30 : Single Scientist
31 – 60 : Single Scientist + Single Shinobi Escort
61 – 85 : Two Scientists + Single Shinobi Escort
86 – 95 : Three Scientists + Single Shinobi Escort
96 – 100 : Unique encounter (speak to crew)
Attacker’s levels:
Scientists: 15 – 20
Escort: 20 - 30
Equipment:
01 – 60 : 5,000 – 10,000 ryos, whatever they were wearing or using
61 – 95 : 10,000 – 15,000 ryos, whatever they were wearing or using
96 – 100 : Advanced scientific equipment (speak to crew), whatever they were wearing or using
Fighting style:
*Scientists: Usually medical nins, use poison weapons or science themed equipment and techniques.
*Escort: Same as pro bounty hunter.
Special: If they are not all killed or apprehended, + 2,000 ryo bounty from the village they come from (if you are identifiable).
Diplomacy DC: Three successive successful diplomacy checks of 40 to deter from attacking you.
Reward:
If physically defeated: Attacker’s level x 10
If scared off: Attacker’s level x 5
Notes: These are ackward encounters, especially when you encounter squads from allied nations... You ever wondered where Rankusha gets his test subjects from?

Professional Bounty Hunters
User Image
Number of attackers: Generate a random number between 1 and 100
01 - 70 : Alone
71 - 90 : Group of 2
91 - 95 : Group of 3
96 - 100: Unique encounter (talk to crew)
Attackers' levels: [Target's level] to [Target's level + 10]
Equipment: Basic to superior weapons, 5,000 ryo - 10,000 ryo.
Fighting style: Roll 1d4 per bounty hunter
1: Taijutsu Specialist
2: Melee Weapon Specialist
3: Ranged Weapon Specialist
4: Ninjutsu Specialist
5: Genjutsu Specialist
6: Hybrid (generate 2 numbers to see a hybrid of which specialties)
Reward:
For every bounty hunter defeated: (level x 10)
For every bounty hunter that fleed or escaped: (level x 10) / 2
Notes: The guys that make you wet your pants. Trained professionals, often missing nins from certain villages, these are the guys that people who are serious about taking you down will hire. They are sent from country to country to track down specific targets and bring them in. They usually work alone, although some will operate in small groups. These are seen less often though since they can get pretty pricey. Ironically, these people often have prices on their own heads as well.

Travel Speed: Sprinting
Destination: Halfway point between Rankusha's lab and the Advanced Recon Post when cutting through the marshes.
Distance: 00 / 110
Fatigue DC: 12
Bounty: 50,000,000 ryo

Hiru dashes through the marshes at great speed, looking constantly over his shoulder to make sure there isn't a monstrosity closing in on him.

At this speed I should make it to the area where there were reports of the F.S.U. before drawing too much attention to myself...

------------------------------------------------------

Distance Traveled:

d20 [10] + Athletics [14] + Strength Mod [12] + 20 per post) = 56 units (takes 10 on roll)

56 units per post x 2 posts = 112 units (reaches destination.)

Fatigue:

Constitution DC (Post 1): 12 + 3 (Sprint) = 15
Constitution DC (Post 2): 15 + 3 (Sprint) = 18

Constitution Check (Both): d20 [10] + Con Mod [08] = 18 (Takes 10)

Success on both.

I'll use the fact that I haven't drawn attention to myself to my advantage... I'll sneak around to see if I can get the jump on them...

Skulking around carefully, Hiru begins to look for signs of the unit.

I have to say, this has to be one of the nastiest places I've ever done a mission in...

He drips his hand in the thick, muddy swamp water he's soaking in up to his knees.

At least there's a good deal of water around for my jutsus if there's any trouble... Think positive Hiru, think positive...

Have to be a talented infiltration unit because they are leaving absolutely no traces behind... At least I haven't ran into any of the swamp's residents yet...

Hiru continues to rummage through the swamp for clues, quickly jumping from tree to ground to make sure not to miss anything.

Man it stinks in here...

As Hiru keeps looking for the Foreign Science Unit, he is suddenly stopped dead in his tracks.

Gha!

He immediately hides behind a tree trunk covering his mouth, hoping his gasp hadn't alerted the strange creature.

What the hell is that thing??
