Monroe stood in front of the water, legs parted slightly, hands on her hips, having a complete stare-down. The girl took a deep breath, she was ready for this. Her yellow floaties that she had always worn all the other time she had gone for a swim were placed gently on the sand a little ways from her. Today. Today was the day she was going to go swimming without her floaties. The child shuffled a little closer to the water, dipping a toe in and squealing before jumping back a little bit. Cold! However, Monroe was determined despite the temperature. She was a big girl now, it was time to swim without her floaties. There had been no one there to teach her how to swim, everything she knew she had been figuring out on her own. It was easy to watch others, and no one seemed to make a big deal out of a child being alone. Independence was normal of a child of her age, perhaps. There were certainly times where Monroe felt like a strong and independent young lady. She certainly had the attitude to boot. Inside, however, she knew there was something missing.

A room for him, a room for Sweetie, and room for him and Sweetie! Okay, so maybe he was being a little presumptuous building his new home as large as he was making it. It was going to take a lot more time and resources to make it this way and the whole idea behind this place was to put him and Sweetie closer together, sooner. However, if he did it right the first time, he would only have to do it once. Sweetie and him had scouted out a location in a good half-way point between the beach and the great tree. It was a perfect spot really. They were right at the beginning of the forest, so the ground was sturdy for a home. While it was not ocean-front property, he could see the sun reflecting off the lake from here. The fact that Dysmas had to clear out a whole bunch of tree's to make the spot level, gave him a one up on resources as well. The way he went about building this home was less in the manner of survival that he had done when he and Sweetie had been on the island and more of a home like the one he grew up in... only much bigger. Dysmas was trying to be optimistic as he planned for a future with Sweetie and mapped out the foundation of a place they could grow into. Dysmas had his doubts, he had seen for himself how things had not worked out between his mother, a land pae, and his father, a naiad. Dysmas had always considered himself to be more of a fish than a land pae, despite his lack of fins and here he was building a home that would tie him to the land, but his heart was already tied to Sweetie Drops. There was some sacrifices you had to make for love. His parents hadn't been willing to make that sacrifice... but Dysmas was determined to have what his parents didn't. Sweat was rolling off his back in thick beads, the surrounding forest offered some shade from the sun, however it did little good when you were working as hard as Dysmas was. The water angel was beginning to feel the effects of dehydration. He didn't need to go into the water as much as a normal naiad, but working and sweating like this certainly made him need to visit the water more often. It was a longer trek to the lake than it used to be for him, so Dysmas set down the log he had been working on and headed out for the lake right away.

Monroe had managed to ease herself into the water by now, slowly acclimating to the temperature of the water. She was feeling pretty confident in herself so far, although she was only waist deep in water so she hadn't even gotten to the point where she would have needed to use her floaties anyways. The girl bit her lip as she slowly started to venture out further into the water. This wasn't so bad at all. She was walking along the bottom of the lake, not exactly swimming... but don't tell Monroe that.
One... two... three... "Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!" she screamed, although it quickly became muffled as her head dipped below water. The ground beneath her had suddenly dropped out from below her feet as she had made that third step forward. The girl's arms flailed out of a natural instinct. It was enough that she was able to keep her head up enough to gasp for air and scream. "Help!!!!" She tried to swim back the way she came from, she tried reaching her toes out as far as she could stretch them to find the bottom of the lake again, but it was no good.

Dysmas was nearing the shore of the lake when he heard the scream. He frowned, not liking the sound of a scream like that. Not at all like a child having fun, and it was certainly the scream of a child. The male took off as fast as he could, deciding that he ran much faster then he could fly with his water-logged wings. His eyes were quickly scanning the surface of the water as he neared closer, ready to dive out and help, but first he had to know which direction to go!
Thankfully Monroe's bright pink hair was easily spotted, bobbing in the water up ahead, not too far from shore. In one quick stride, Dysmas was beside her. He was tall enough that he could touch the bottom in this spot where the sand had dropped off, and he held the girl in his arms as he stood there.
The girl panted, brought on by fear as her heart raced inside of her. She clung tightly to the strange male's chest like she had never clung to anything before. She couldn't even get her mouth to operate to say thank you as she tried to get her everything to calm down. In fact, when it came down to it, the only thing she could really do right now was cry, so she did that.
Dysmas' eyes widened. "Are you..." No of course she wasn't alright. "It's okay now, I'm going to take you to shore, okay?" Oh no, she was starting to cry. This was way out of Dysmas' league. He made a hesitant face as he began carrying her to shore. When they were out of the water, Dysmas leaned over to set her down, but she was still clinging rather tightly to him and didn't go down. "We're on land now." He tried to reassure her, but the girl didn't budge so he straightened back up.
"I'm just going to set you down, alright?" He tried again.
The girl's lip pouted, but she reluctantly nodded her head, 'yes'.
Once she was set down in the sand, Dysmas sat down as well so he was level with her. "Where is your family?" He asked. Figuring that he should take her to them, they were probably much better equipped to handle tears and whatever else was sure to follow this scary, perhaps even traumatizing, event.
Monroe shook her head to say she didn't have any, she still wasn't opening her mouth. It just felt hard to speak right now. She took a deep breath and sighed, trying to wipe away the tears, and merely spreading sand all over her cheeks. She felt discouraged at the moment, she had watched her incredibly short life flash before her eyes just a moment ago. She also felt like she might never go in the water ever again. Even with her floaties!
Dysmas' heart sank. She didn't have a family? "Here," Dysmas brushed off his hands so there wasn't any sand on them and the proceeded to brush the sands off her cheeks. "Like brand new." He tried. He was trying... "I'm sure that was really scary..." Dysmas had no idea what he was saying, he had zero experience in the area of children, except from when he and his brother were kids but that was different, and a long time ago. "The water isn't that bad, you just have to know how to swim first." Dysmas figured she must have been out there trying to swim. "I can teach you. If you want."
It was a traumatizing experience in Trager's childhood that had caused her to fear the water, and he didn't want the same thing to happen to this young girl. The best way to do that was to teach her the water wasn't scary. Dysmas also felt like he couldn't just leave her on her own, but he didn't even know if she wanted someone to look after her. If he taught her to swim... well it was a starting point.
Monroe looked hesitant, blinking up at Dysmas with big, golden eyes. Did she really want to go in the water again? But if he taught her... She had been too busy dying to really see him swim out to her, but he must have. Monroe waited a long time before she finally nodded her head, 'yes'.
Dysmas smiled, "Good, I'm a pretty good swimmer, if I do say so myself. You practice with me and you'll be giving the naiad a run for their shells in no time." He had noticed the girl had yet to say anything since he had heard her screams and that concerned him slightly. "I am Dysmas, what's your name?" He asked her, trying to get her to at least say something.
The demon girl sighed again, before finally opening her mouth. "M'roe" she mumbled, followed by a water-filled cough. The girl frowned as she curled herself into a ball.
"Roe... we'll save your swimming lessons for another day, alright? Why don't I take you to my home for now." He would take her to his mother's home since his and Sweetie's place wasn't quite ready for children yet.
Monroe nodded her head and held out her arms, ready to be picked up and carried again. There was something comforting about that.
