The sun had long since succumbed to the darkness when Harbinger emerged from the hollow cavern of chilled rock he called his place of residence. The only light shone high above his head as the pale moon looked on with callous disinterest and the stars cackled in mockery at her side. Even so his dim, hue less eyes captured the moon’s glow, causing them to light up with renewed life and shine with a sinister light. Blood oozed slowly from the ever gaping wounds he had possessed practically from birth as he lumbered out into the world of night. He expected neither late night conversations nor company, for he was a hideous abomination born to this earth for the soul purpose of both causing and living in misery and torment. His father had instructed him well in the creation of those emotions and his mother…his mother; never mind his mother.

The realm of the night welcomed him more warmly than the world of day ever could. Enveloped in the shadows he could roam freely without hearing the screams of those he frightened, or without catching bits and pieces of conversations of which he was the focus. Normally when others spoke of him it was to the tune of fear or pity, neither breeding desirable words. On the days he felt most like his lethal father the fear did not bother him but instead bolstered him. On the days where he felt most like his mother, he only felt lost and in pain. A fallen angel who belonged neither to the realm of good or evil, but who was forever stuck in limbo. Hate compelled him, hate drove him, hate was all that he had ever known; and it was likely all he ever would know.

There was no purpose to his wanderings, only to get out of his domain before he atrophied in the way a corpse was meant to. He typically wandered through the night without direction or thought, only to once again retreat to his solitary existence once the morning broke. There was no rhyme or reason behind why he decided to take a mountain path on this particular night but, call it fate or simply misfortune, things were about to change for the stallion of living death.

He had thought that he and his sister were safe. It had been many months since he and Sardine had escaped the fiery clutches of Lux Flamma. They were careful in their movements, always on the move and never staying in the same place for too long. But apparently they were not careful enough... Lux and her group had found them. They had just been settling down for the night when the acrid smell of smoke that often haunted their dreams wafted through the clearing. In the chaos, he had been separated from Sardine. He had not stopped running since.

His hooves beating against the dirt and his ragged breathing were all he could hear, but he knew she was behind him. Coming for him. Closing in. Snapper smelled the smoke that clung to her and heard echoes of her cackling. His lungs were burning and his hardly-used muscles ached. But all he could do was continue running. If she caught him...

His terrified musings were cut off as his hoof caught on a gnarled root. He went flying, hitting the ground with a harsh thud and rolling over the rocky terrain until his body stilled. His ankle and side burned. Gasping in large gulps of air, his eyes darted around in the dark. She was here. She was going to get him.

How dare he. How dare he try to leave her. No one left her. No one was ever allowed to leave. She had told him that she would find him if he and his sister ever left. She had not been lying. She and her crew had been tracking them. They had almost given her the slip, but a nice mare had let them know where they were staying. Soquili were so forthcoming with information when they had fangs at their throat. Hehe.

Lux Flamma laughed as she continued to pursue the weak stallion.

"Snappeeeer, Snappeeeer come back to Lux," she sang, not caring if he could even hear her. He did have some distance on her, but the half-suti was closing in on her prey. "You and Sardine have been so bad. So very very bad. But we found you, we did!"

Lux sped up and practically danced when she saw his downed form sprawled on the ground in the distance. She slowed her steps and tutted at him.

"Aww, my poor dear Snapper. Did you fall down and get an ouchie?" she frowned comically as she stopped just a few feet away from his shivering body. "Should Lux make it better?" she asked, looking down at his oddly bent front leg.

She stood there for a few moments, staring into Snapper's wide eyes, before switching her gaze to his leg.

"I think..." she raised her front hooves. "I'LL MAKE IT WORSE!" she brought her full weight down on the stallion's already twisted leg and could barely contain a giggle at the loud cracking noise and pitiful groan the action caused. This would make him think twice of leaving her side again. If he even could now.

The otherwise mundane stillness of the night was shattered with the subtle scent of smoke on the gentle breeze, and mangled voices picking their ways through the trees toward the lumbering stallion’s ears. His pace slowed to a stop as he lifted his head in an attempt to pinpoint the source of the sounds, but the landscape made that practically impossible. Rather than locking on a specific target and moving with purpose he chose instead to follow a whim. He had no idea whether he was moving in the right direction or not, but it was all a halfhearted effort to begin with.

Before long something colorful appeared on the horizon; something that looked almost like the sun, if the sun could become angered. Picking his way carefully around the debris he drew nearer, a sudden bubble of interest welling up within his breast. Perhaps the night would yield more adventure than he had imagined. A thought that was quickly confirmed as the trees fell away to reveal a rather startling and unusual scene taking place.

An unfortunate stallion lay helplessly on the ground while a fiery looking mare joyfully tortured him. A shiver of twinkling anticipation mixed with a chilled sensation of desperation as the conflicted stallion looked on. The voice of his mother begged him to help, while the voice of his father told him to take advantage of the situation in some way. Before his mind could be fully made up on which side he would take, he emerged from the trees. “A glorious night for woe, don’t you think?” He questioned merrily, blood dripping quickly from his sewn cheek as he spoke.
