User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Skirmish Flamenco was playing Rock Families in the park. It was a pretty fun game. You found little pebbles and paired them up based on color. Then you went out and found more pebbles that looked like what would happen if the first two pebbles had a baby and then you paired those up with other pebbles until you had a complicated web of pebbles. To any other phony, though, it would look like you were just making piles of rocks. To any other phony, it'd look boring and if she tried to explain it, it'd be weird. Skirmish knew that phonies didn't usually react well to weird- and besides, this was a game best played alone anyways, despite the fact that it really looked like some bored kid pushing rocks around. There were plenty of other phonies in the park- pegasus kids jumping off the swingset, unicorns tossing a frisbee with magic, earth phonies playing kickball, and all kinds of others doing other things- but Skirmish was alone. She didn't mind it- while she loved her friends dearly, she was a very introverted little creature and was pretty slow to make new friends unless she was really curious about them to begin with. And since none of them was at the park, she was perfectly content to be alone. After all, if you were always with other phonies, you'd never get to play Rock Families. And that would be a tragedy.

Paws Button had been shooed out of the stable by her mother. Apparently her mother thought she needed to go to the park to wear down her battery a bit. Of course the plucky little filly didn't find this bad at all. She loved running through the park and talking to people, there was very little Paws liked more than talking to others.

The energetic foal was springing along the park path on the search for something fun to do when the bright gleam of neon colored hair caught her eye. Just like that Paws was sucked in like a vacuum and she headed straight for the other girl. The earth phony's eyes were greeted by several piles of stones as she neared the stranger.

"Ohhh!" She shouted, now looming over the seated filly. "Those rocks are neat. What are you doing with them?" The girl was practically shrieking the words before she recollected what polite behavior was. After all, her mother was constantly chiding her about her behavior.

"Hi. I'm Paws Button! You can call me Paws though. What's your name?"

Skirmish blinked a few times, processing what was happening. The newcomer was loud and unknown to her- she seemed nice enough, maybe, but she was a stranger and exposing a stranger to this game was social suicide. Stammering, she tried to hide a pile (Blue Schist x Granite cross with a Quartz bred in after the third generation) with a forehoof.

"Um- I'm- um- it's a game- it's complicated- it's weird- I'll put them back, I probably shouldn't have moved them- I'm Skirmish!" she said, squeaking a bit on the -ish as she tried scramble to her feet. "Skirmish Flamenco. That's, um. That's my name!"

Oops. xD Good thing i noticed it.

Paws kept beaming as the other girl stammered her reply. Her eyes gleamed as she watched, occasionally flicking to the piles of rocks in anticipation of learning of a new fun game.

"It's nice to meet you Skirmish! You don't need to put them back if you were playing!" The filly tilted her head, watching as the other girl blocked a pile from view. "These piles are really cool. Are you making pyramids? Oh! Are you pretending the park ants are little Egyptians building tombs for their ant pharaohs?!" Paws Button leaned forward, her snout close to some of the pebbles for proper inspection.

Oh no oh no oh no oh no she was LOOKING at the rock families what do what do what do

"Erm- Um- It-It's nice to meet you too!" she gulped, watching the newcomer get way too close to Rose Quartz x Jasper. "It's- it's not really a game I mean if you were gonna call it anything it's sort of a simulation with controlled results- I guess it's kinda weird and not very fun..." she trailed off, her voice getting smaller and smaller with each word as she waited for Paws Button to get bored and wander off. Egyptian tombs would have been a very cool idea, which was probably why the new kid came up with it and not her. "I mean,"- and now her voice was down to a little murmur- "Not as fun as other games. You'd probably like to go play something else better. Like, um. Kickball? Or hopscotch? Or Game Boy?"

"A simulation, huh? Oh! Like goat simulator and forklift truck simulator?" Paws was curious, mostly about how you win this sort of game. "Not very fun? Then why are you doing it?" The filly blinked, she couldn't understand why anyone would willingly do something they thought was a chore.

The filly's lips pursed and her face scrunched up. "Well i do like Game Boy games, but I wanna play with you right now." She glanced over her shoulder towards the more athletic phony. Sure, she liked running around and she was competitive, but she'd already spotted Skirmish first! Her decision was made. She must learn this pebble pile game.

"So, since you must like this game, tell me how to play!"

It wasn't that Skirmish didn't like this gal. She might! She really, really wanted to- but she just found it super hard to be friendly sometimes. Sometimes, clicking was instantaneous. Other times, it took forever. And there was the ever-present deep-set fear of being laughed at. It was one thing when somebody laughed at your jokes- but another thing entirely when they laughed at you. She hated being laughed at or made fun of.

But... maybe she should give Paws Button the benefit of the doubt? Maybe things would turn out ok. She really did seem pretty nice- maybe it was time to spread the proverbial wings."Ok. I'll- I'll tell you. But- look- um-" She took a deep breath. There was no way this kid was gonna leave her alone until she found out what Skirmish was doing. "I'll tell you- but you have to PROMISE not to make fun of me. Please?"

Paws was squirming with excitement over all the possibilities for this new game and Skirmish was finally going to tell her! The filly was practically bouncing in place as she imagined different ways to play with piles of rocks. Maybe it was like some sort of rock race or pile of rock dominoes! Who knew what it could be!

She certainly wasn't expecting the other girl's plea and the filly slowly blinked at her. "I'm not going to make fun of you? Why would i make fun of you?" The girl's face scrunched up as she tried to envision a situation where that might happen, but she just couldn't picture it.

"Because- it's kind of a weird game." Skirmish gulped and took a breath before going into it. "If I don't tell you now, I might not be brave enough to do it, so here it goes. This is a game called Rock Families. The idea is that you start with two rocks and give them names if you want. Then you find more rocks that look like them but not exactly- like how kids look maybe more like mom or dad or both. Then you repeat that until you have a few rock families. Then you take rocks from each of the families and cross them like they're getting rock married. You then find them more rock babies and the idea is that you try to create a family tree with rocks where you're looking for certain traits. It's kind of like, um. Breeding animals? Like dog breeders and puppies? Only they're just rocks. So it's ok to just toss them back at the end because they're not really alive. And they don't have to go live in the rock shelter." She paused, knowing how... unbelievably strange this must sound to somebody who had never played Rock Families. "So it's kind of like a breeding simulation. I'm sorry. I know, it's lame. But, um, it's a game that's pretty easy to play alone."

Paws was listening and nodding along as the game was explained. She was doing her best to be respectful, despite her bubbling excitement since Skirmish was so nervous about how it would come across. The little filly pursed her lips. In her opinion this game didn't seem like something people would laugh at. If anything it probably taught something about traits or some such.

"Ohhhh. I see! It's kind of like breeding in ticklemon, where you breed the monsters together and a baby appears with a combination of the two monsters stats. That's pretty fun! In ticklemon i'm always trying to get the best stats possible for my team and you gotta do that by breeding." She giggled, trotting around the various piles of stones. "Do you ever play it with things other than rocks? Like flowers or toys?"

Play alone? Paws Buttons' ears swiveled and she frowned. "Oh. Can you only play it by yourself?"

"Nope- I'd never thought to do it with flowers or toys! It would be pretty fun to do with flowers if you were in a field of wild ones or in somebody's garden who didn't mind you picking them. I don't think I have enough toys to do it with toys. I've never played ticklemon- if that's like, a video game, that probably makes it a lot easier- the computer does the simulation part for you! But it's kinda fun finding the rocks, I think." Skirmish was losing her hesitation; she was being more open and letting her excitement show. It seemed like the other girl's kindness was genuine, and that was definitely affecting her mood. But- more questions? What was this about?
"Wait a sec," she said, staring at Paws Button with her head tilted to one side. "Do you want to play it with me?"

Paws just couldn't stop nodding enthusiastically. It was a miracle her neck never got tired. "Ohhh, yeah! Though it might be too easy to just pull flowers from the same plant though... You don't have many toys?" She frowned for a moment, then pursed her lips. "Well, you can come over and play with my toys if you ever want to try it with them."

With a giggle she looked up the the sky. "Well, Ticklemon is about befriending this wild monsters and then they'll fight by your side. You can breed them too to try and get monsters with perfect stats. You might like a dating sim better though, because then you can develop relationships."

The little filly was beaming as Skirmish asked her, "Of course i do! I love games and they're always the best if you play them with other people!"

Skirmish's face cracked into a huge grin as she twitched her ears in anticipation. "Really?! You want to play? You don't think I'm a weirdo for playing with rocks? Most times when somebody new comes up and asks what I'm doing, they just kinda back off slowly or make a weird face." She pulled her lips into a worried frown and rolled her eyes, demonstrating the unwanted reaction for a moment before popping back into happiness. "I guess I should have trusted all along that you weren't going to pick on me. I should probably think better of others- it's the kind thing to do, after all- it's just... just that I'm kinda shy sometimes. Sometimes I click right away, but other times it's really hard for me to warm up and make new friends." She swept some stray leaves from the ground next to her. "Here, sit here and I'll show you the piles I have going on- all of them- and then we can get you started! And maybe... maybe later you can show me your Ticklemon?" She smiled sweetly at Paws Button, so happy that the kindness of this stranger-turned-friend really did seem genuine. "I like the idea of making friends out of monsters."

Shall we end this here?

"Of course i want to play! I love games!" Paws smiled then blinked at what followed. "Really? That's not very nice of them..." She scrunched up her face, trying to think of an explanation as to why any phony would be so... Lame. "Maybe they just aren't very good at games and didn't want to embarrass themselves, so they tried to play it cool," she offered.

For a moment the filly kept quiet as the other girl divulged things that she was insecure about. "It's ok to be shy," the foal nodded. "Thank you for sharing your game with me. It must of been hard to do if people are usually such meanies about it." A smile spread across her face and she trotted over to the indicated spot to take a seat. "I would love that!" She giggled. "They're really cute monsters too!"
