Vosin was sore, but it was a good sore. She'd spent the afternoon helping riders scrub dirty dragonhides after firestone practice. A smelly, dirty, and sore job. She rolled her shoulders to ease them. A bath had helped a little, and she didn't stink. Maybe an application of numbweed would help her sleep after dinner. Not before though. A full bowl and cup in hand she turned to find a seat. The dinning hall was crowded in the middle of dinner rush. Vos tossed her head and flipped her bright red braid when someone ran into her back. "Watch it there," she said. Moving carefully she made her way down the tables. Spotting a free seat, Vos plopped down next to another candidate. "Hey there. The soup any good?" She glanced at what the girl was eating.

xxThe young girl had had a busy day checking over the stores and making sure there were plenty of whatever supply was needed, marking down what was still needed, and running errands for every single rider in this shard. She was grumpy, tired, and her legs felt like they were made of jelly. So naturally coming to the dining hall hadn't been the first of the things Kalendol had wanted, when she knew perfectly well how to feed herself. She'd been feeding six men for the past seventeen turns.
xxBut here she was nursing her cup of soup, at an uncomfortable table that made her uncomfortable pants chafe her sensitive inner thighs. Quite honestly, she had no idea what had compelled her to come to the dining hall rather than her bunk in the girl's candidates' room. Yet, here Kalendol was. From behind her she heard someone say something. But she was simply too tired from running to pay them any mind at first.
xxUntil a voice beside her asked a question. Hey there. Is the soup any good? Slowly, the girl turned her face towards the other, blinking her hazel green eyes. "The soup? Ah! Oh, yes it is, Ms?" She asked calmly, blinking her eyes. She had seen this girl at the questions and answers, but Kalendol hadn't spoken to her at that time, thinking more about the task at hand. She just didn't want to be wrong in the stand, because she was certain her hard headed brother's were just too empty minded to think of something. One had his finger chomped off by a dragonet.
xx"I'm Kalendol." The seventeen turn old smile, holding out her fingerless rawhide gloved hand. Kalendol's red hair fell out from beneath the soft hat that she wore constantly, a goodbye gift from her brother. She was dressed rather plainly, with some ankle leather boots that looked too big for her feet and weren't laced properly, a white shirt, loose fitting pants, and her rawhide gloves adorning her hands. "It's a pleasure."
o.ut o.f c.hampagne I opted to change what I'd previously said because it more than likely wouldn't have fit her character. I think she'd be more prone to scoot away as the dinner wore on.

xXsexxeh_rinnyXx Can you fix your posts so the text isn't all along one side? It makes it a bit hard to read. Vos arched her brow. She recognized this as the candidate, (she was a candidate right?), that had asked all those questions. Some she'd been very surprised the girl didn't know. "No miss, just Vosin. What was your name again?" Glad to hear the soup was good, she started to eat quickly but neatly. Ah that's right she'd said her name at the session. "Welcome to the weyr Kalendol. How are things for you?" She glanced at the hand. She really wanted to shake now? Vos covered her sigh as she squirmed around until she could comfortably give a quick shake before returning to her food. It was clear this girl was painfully new. "If you need help, you can come find me. I'll set you straight."

xxShe'd noticed the look the other girl had given her outstretched hand and she quickly tucked it under her thigh, aware now how much of a fool she seemed. "I can manage on my own, thank you for your concern." She said neatly as she nursed the soup once more, swallowing a mouthful before glancing briefly at the other candidate. Yeah, she asked some weird questions at the gathering for the candidates, but she felt like she wanted to know what she was really getting herself into.
xx"Very lovely name indeed. I'm quite well, adjusting to the work here." She whispered. Gods, how new did she truly seem to this other girl? Kalendol kept her body drawn inwards, uncertainty briefly flashing over her. No time for this. She thought and then took another bite of the soup, briefly scanning the unfamiliar faces around her. Suddenly, she realized how incredibly lonely she felt, pain entered her heart but she shoved it aside. No one can know my feelings. She sighed.
xx"And you? Where do you come from?" Perhaps Kalendol was a bit rude at the moment, but ah well, she just didn't really know how things were done here.

The teen eyed the girl as she was told Kalendol informed her that she could manage. Vos gave a shrug. It was no skin off her back if the girl wanted to stumble around until someone took pity on her. She'd made the offer and that was enough for her. Some people could be very pig headed about things. "Ah, thanks," she said awkwardly. Her name was lovely? Well ok, she could go with that. It was her name and she loved it. "Candidate chores can be so boring some times. Like changing all the glows," the teen rolled her green eyes. She'd gotten that one often enough to know. Vos gave a snicker, "born and raised right here in Benden." She knew this place like the back of her hand. It had been her backyard since she could toddle. "I'm really looking forward to this hatching. It's about time we had a clutch here." She chattered randomly between bites of soup. It was good as Kalendol had said. Weyr, or wherhold in this case, food was usually pretty good.

xxKalendol thought for a moment as she sipped at the soup, looking at the other teen with a small smile. "So, I take it there hasn't been one in a while?" She asked gently, eying the girl. The young girl smiled and then looked at her soup, "I'm excited too, it'll be the first time I've ever stood as a candidate. My brothers, dim witted that they are, were able to stand, so my pa pretty much taught me his trade. I... hope he won't be disappointed that I ignored his wishes and decided to become a candidate." This last bit was mostly to herself, though loud enough for her dinner partner to hear.
i'm sorry, my muse is crap.

xXsexxeh_rinnyXx You don't have to answer right away if you wanna give your muse time to think. Vos gave a shake of her head. "Nah, with only one queen clutches are kinda scarce. The greens fly all the time, but they never lay clutches." The wherhold really did need another fertile female, she mused to herself. Well there was nothing she could do about it, short of going or writing to another weyrleader. The chances they'd listen to her were beyond nil. "All I can say is pay attention to what the candidatemaster tells ya, and don't do nothing stupid." Vos fixed her a with a look. It was painfully obvious that she didn't know anything. Hopefully though she'd prove smarter than her brothers. "Oh? Does he know you're staying on as a candidate? Becoming a rider is a respectable profession." At least she thought so, but perhaps she was biased.

The girl smiled kindly at the other and nodded her head slowly. "What color dragon are you hoping impresses to you? Judging from your response I'd assume you'd rather have a fertile female?" The girl asked slowly, leaning forward to take in another spoonful of the soup, only a thin layer now covering the bottom of her cup. "Crimsons are beauties." She chuckled, more to herself. Gosh, Kalendol stood out no matter where she was.
"My father doesn't know yet. Every time my brothers returned, not riders, my pa got a little deeper into this sort of irritable state. I don't want to disappoint him. You know? So I'll wait to tell him." She explained with a laugh.

She gave a shrug. "I don't really know what color I want, so long as they want me. What I do want is to be somebody. I want to be able to do something, not just be another wingrider." Vos grinned, "all dragons are beautiful though. I'm looking forward to the Touching. I'm gonna compare notes on the eggs with my siblings afterwards." A candidates whole life revolved around eggs until they got a dragon of their own. "Mmmm are you gonna invite him to the hatching? You should. Lots of holdborn kids get their parents invited." She glanced at the other girl. "Do you think you'll Impress on your first Standing? I should warn you lots of kids get disappointed at their first hatching." Vos felt it'd be best to warn the girl now. Some of these holder born had strange ideas.

Kalendol listened and then nodded her head slowly, "That is true. I think it really doesn't matter what color I get either. They're all so pretty and so..." She sighed, shaking her auburn covered head. What more could she possibly say? Kalendol wanted to fly, she wanted to disappear into the clouds of tomorrow and prove she was the better child of the family. If only she could.
"Probably not. It's a long way for him to travel, and he doesn't quite like to be in the air." Kalendol whispered and looked at the spoon in her hand, her eyes tearing up a little. "I heard that some had their parents come, but... I don't want him to have to come here." Or be disappointed in me. She thought a little more privately.
As the conversation drifted to whether she believed she'd impress she smiled a half grin, it looked rather mischievous. "I'm not too worried, I am considering this a trial and error run. Without of course, getting gobbled up by an anxious dragonet. I think it'll go swimmingly. As to my opinions on if I'll impress or not, I think it depends solely on the dragonet should they decide to choose me." Kalendol laughed a little, smiling at the girl. "Is this your first time as well?"

There was so many different colors, how could a candidate choose? Obviously a bronze wouldn't pick her, so that was one less, but all the others. Except it wasn't the candidate's choice, but the dragon's. Vos tapped her foot on the floor as she thought. Golds were the egg layers, but they had power. Bronzes were the leaders. Browns were sturdy and reliable. Blues had some skill with fancy flying and playful natures. Greens of course were a bit flighty but could do the best flying stunts. Next of course was the atypicals, but she'd only seen one: crimson. The teen concentrated a moment. Crimson had been about the size of the brown, so were their abilities similar to a brown? They could also try to lay eggs or be a fighter. What about the others? Silver, black, and white? Vos really hoped there'd be some atypicals so she could see them. She pulled her attention back to her fellow candidate before she got lost in musings. Vos was glad the girl didn't have her heart set on any one color. A dragon was a dragon after all. The color of its hide didn't matter. She blinked surprised. "Ya do know you can have a rider pick him up just a'fore the hatching starts? Like I said we're practiced at this," Vos commented proudly. "As soon as the humming starts, a number of riders go out and bring groups of people back. Just let the candidatemaster know you want your father included." From the corner of her eyes, she watched Kalendol. Did the girl truly not want her father present? Vos knew she was looking forward to having her parents watch. She bet Kal's father would come riding a dragon if she asked. There had to be something there that she didn't want him present, and it made her wary. Vos snorted. "Yeah you might wanna stay away from the error part? Kids get mauled by the dragonets if they ain't careful." She gave a second snort. State the obvious. Of course it was up to the dragon. But how would she feel if she had her heart set on Impressing and there wasn't a dragon for her? Vos decided she should keep an on Kalendol. "Nope! I been Standing since I was twelve like any weyrbrat." It was admittedly an advantage to grow up in the weyr. "I just ain't stood in awhile. In fact no one has. There hasn't been many clutches of late cause we only have the one gold dragon." It would be good to have a clutch on the Sands again. "What about you? How'd you get to the weyr? I'm assuming a Searchdragon didn't come find you if your dad didn't know."

The girl frowned for a moment and then smiled a little. No, in truth she didn't want her father here. If she failed, she didn't want him to be disappointed. If she succeeded in Impressing a dragonet, she'd personally go visit her family when she had the time and show them. But, until that happened, she didn't want her father to be disappointed in her. As she was sure he would be. As Vos went on to discuss that she should invite her father, and that a rider would go retrieve him, the girl only shook her head. "Dad is really stuck in his ways. He's not going to be thrilled that I decided to become a candidate. He asked me not to. But... the air calls to me. I want to help any way I can. My mother had wanted to be one, and all of my brothers. I want to make my family proud. Mum isn't here anymore, and I watched for years as my father's depression each time my brothers returned unsuccessful deepened. I don't want to cause him pain." Kalendol whispered softly, almost too soft for her neighbor to here her.
Turning now, she smiled and shrugged, "I came here on wings, a dragon picked me up from an outlying hold, and brought me here. I was wondering the streets, looking for the tanner master, when I passed a group, I'm not assuming of candidates, who were talking about a dragon clutch, I got excited. I guess, that's how it came to be that I wanted to become a candidate. I didn't do it in the usual sense, I was already here. But, it was the day I heard of the question and answers, so I went. That's why I was a bit late." She laughed, and her smile brightened her features incredibly. "Guess it was just luck."

Vos tilted her head as she listened. "That's really too bad. Hatchings are fun times. At least think about it." She wondered if the girl stood any better chance at impressing than her family had. So far it wasn't a good track record. She wasn't sure a searchdragon had actually picked the girl out, or if she'd come to the weyr for something else and decided to stand. It could all be high hopes for nothing. Holders could be such sticks in the mud, she thought. At least Kal gave the dragonets another warm body. With luck on her side a dragon would find her acceptable, and she could impress her family. Growing up with her loving family, the teen was a bit confused by the other girl's situation and desire not to tell her father. In the end it was her choice. "If he didn't want you to try, then doesn't it seem kinda strange that he'd send you to a weyr?" Vos watched her. There was plenty of craftholds that took all sorts of apprentices. One didn't need to go to a weyr to learn the stuff, unless that stuff happened to be dragonriding. She thought there might still be a bit of hope in her father. Now she was very confused. She said a dragon had picked her up. "Soooo did the rider say you were gonna be a candidate when he or she picked you up?" This was most definitely strange! From what she knew, a rider would not just spirit a child or apprentice away. They would inform the master and or parents first. "Does your papa know your here? If he doesn't know, then I bet he's frantic if you just disappeared. You could write him a letter and let him know your safe." Vos suggested mildly.

Kalendol listened to the girl and shook her head, "I already thought on it. He wouldn't approve." The teen whispered softly, staring at her now empty tray. She looked at the other candidate carefully and a small smile touched her lips. "My dad sent me here to learn tanning from a master. He was an apprentice with this guy, and considered him a true master, so he sent me here. He knows I'm here, and I've already told my master I wanted to stand. A searchrider didn't choose me, I decided to stand on my own." She said in answer to the girl's questions.
The girl only shrugged her shoulders. "I just want to be good for my family. I'm the only girl, tensions are high. I just want to prove my worth." She shook her head now and smiled even more.

The teen sighed and gave a shrug, giving up with girl. It was such a hard concept for her to wrap her head around. What was wrong with these people that they wouldn't come to encourage their child on? This was why she disliked non-weyrfolk. "Well once you learn the candidate stuff, I'm sure they'd let you work with that tanner master. Or maybe they'll let you work with him in place of chores instead? I dunno if that'd be better or worst," she said with a wrinkle of her nose. A tannery was such smelly business, but so vitally important to a rider. Vos couldn't say if getting out of the chores was worth the smell. If she could find something to do that suited her she'd totally leap on it. Then again, being a candidate suited her fine. "Being the only girl doesn't mean anything. You can still be good at something if you don't succeed at something else." Holders had such weird notions. Oh well. "Looks like you're done and so am I. Lets put the trays away and be off. I need to stop by the healers for some numbweed." She laughed. Making numbweed was probably more smelly than tanning!
