With a scuffle of branches and a mutter, a dainty dusk-shadowed muzzle made its way through a wall of greenery. For a moment the nose hesitated, nostrils flaring as the owner took a deep breath and tried to detect any scent of danger... Or overprotective parents.

'Seems safe enough, really.. I don't smell any Skinwalkers, or Kalona, or dead things?'

As his face followed his nose Arioso Canto carefully peered about, nervous that at any moment his parents or grandparents would appear out of the trees. Yes, just as he thought. The path was clear and quiet, and while birdsong drifted on the wind there was not even a curious finch to note his antics. (Much less anything larger.)

One foot followed the peering face, and then another, until the colt was halfway into the trail (his rump still hidden in the brush). And still no sign of adults. With a sigh Arioso stepped fully free of his hiding place, spinning one way and then the other as he considered which direction to go. So far, no sign of rampaging relatives or any real danger (which were sort of the same thing really). No caring strangers to drag him back before his family if he were caught... How much trouble would he be in, if caught? Well, Ari didn't want to think about what would happen if he got caught. His father would probably thwap him with a disapproving tail, and send him back to the grove to think about his foolishness. But it wasn't foolish, he just wanted a bit of adventure!

Deciding it was safe for the moment, the colt began a skipping sort of trot. He was far from home now, nearing the open rolling expanse of the plains that edged the forest he called home. He was far from the river-facing grove that held his parents, far from any place he had wandered before. But the last time he'd wandered he had crossed paths with a most interesting stallion, a unicorn cross that practiced the force of light he gave off.

He had been so unnerved to see Ari spirting about on his own, he'd dragged the colt back to the protective circle of his family. It earned Arioso a talking too and a disappointed glare, but no real punishment outside of the fact he was not to wander alone. Which of course was a rule for a foal anyway, but a little insulting because that was practically a blood-trait!

" 'Fayths stick together.' is all well and good." Ari agreed as he repeated his grandmother's teachings with a grumble under his breath. "But really, Fayths also explore.. And that's the part I'm interested in!"

So he'd bolted away from his family the next time he had the chance, and spent the day chasing butterflies and birds through the forest... A while back he'd stopped to wade in a convenient pool and then drink his fill, and now he was on the move again. He was hopeful he'd make a new friend or two before the day was out, but if that failed he was at least going to get to see new things!

It was mid-morning by the time the Kalona stallion had stirred himself from his den, hunted and fed to his contentment. Now he stood beside the creek, taking care to wash away any trace of blood and drink his fill of crystal clear water. With a final glance at his reflection in the water, the Dark Fayth stallion turned his back on sunlit water, fading back into the shadows of the forest.

With no true destination in mind, Aveshar wandered with a casual restlessness that bespoke of his always hunting nature. Even sated and well fed there was an edge to him, a hunger not yet filled which fueled his strides and made his hooves ever-restless. He did not yet turn back to his territory, nor did he seek to visit his grown children... Instead, he hunted casually, not truly searching for something to kill and feast on as he had already fed quite well.

Of course, what he actually did search for was somewhat unclear. He had fed and drank, his territory was sizeable and clearly claimed, there were none to run away from his borders or to fear escaping. Not currently, anyway, which meant he had no reason to rush back to his den. He certainly did not desire to swim and felt no need to compete with the young stallions when they indulged in various tasks to impress the mares. And he was not in any particular mood for sport, nor for hunting the thrice-cursed Skinwalkers like he did when he was particularly eager for a fight.

In fact, he was something perilously close to bored, when a distant noise caught his attention and sent his ears to swiveling as he sought more of the sound. There, and then there again. His ears flicked and then fixed on the sound, pitched Westward. There was the soft whisper-crunch of foliage that bespoke of a foal's enthusiastic passage, the gentle whisper of dainty hooves. A foal, alone and unaccompanied.

And faintly, ever so faintly on the breeze, Aveshar could hear a delicate melody. A familiar song that was not a song, like hearing a thing that was less heard and more remembered. It was not a thing one specifically heard or felt or scented, but it was known to him all the same. He was suddenly aware of it, like a wolf catching scent of a game trail and knowing prey could be found at the end of it. It was awareness and instinct and memory and something else besides. Less something he knew with his head and more something that was familiar to his heart. Something every drop of blood in him knew and recognized immediately.

'Kin, and not Dark Kin. He noted 'Fayth of the Light.'

The Kalona stallion gave an evil grin, bloodthirsty and wide, as he drew a deep breath. He could not quite catch the scent, but that was no matter. Hunting like one blind, the stallion closed his eyes and turned his head this way and that, ears pricked and seeking the song.

There.

There, growing faintly softer as the colt progressed away, and there could be no doubt it was a colt... There was something that told him so, the same thing that bespoke to the music in his blood. One of his brother's get, no doubt. He could detect the song like golden music, dripping notes soft and sweet and full of liquid light. His nephew.

Without thought he was suddenly in pursuit, teeth bared as his strides ate up the distance between him and that too-pure sound. He wanted to grind it into the dust, to destroy every last trace of that too-sweet melody. A Healer born and in training, he had no doubt of it. A shining champion of light.

A Fayth of the Light, and a Unicorn besides. Aveshar wanted him dead with a single minded purpose. 'Your life, little nephew, is mine...'

Riomie had gotten far to used to wandering on her own. She wasn't supposed to wander from her mother, or her herd, but she did. Often. How else could she learn of the world and of the souls in it? If she did not explore. she would not ever find the souls to send to Valhalla. She hadn't come across any that she could consider, however. She wasn't even entirely sure what she was looking for, but she knew she could know it when she found it. She had met some interesting people on her little forays out into the wilderness. one worthy, but certianly interesting.

And, as she traveled and met others, she learned new things. Like the fact that unicorns could heal wounds and not everyone looks the same, or even lived in the same places. Honestly, some of those she met had com across as quite scary the first time she saw them. Either that, or arrogant. Helpful, but arrogant. Rio glanced down at her leg where there were no no scars or blemishes of any kind. It was odd, honestly.. The cut had been so very deep that she'd been afraid she wouldn't be able to make it back home. However, she was lucky, so very lucky that she had stumbled upon a Healer. Sort of. A colt, not much older than her, but a Unicorn with a talent for healing, had helped her, healed her.

It was an interesting thing, that talent. Not something that she had, obviously, her talents leaned more toward fighting and war, she supposed. Rio couldn't know. as there were no wars going on that she knew of. There could be, she wasn't exactly a world traveler. Not yet. anyway.

Riomie did wonder if it was on the battlefield that she would find the souls she was looking for. It would make sense, given she was a Valkyrie. But, alas, she had no way of knowing quite yet.

Folding her wigs tightly to her back, she kept moving, paws silent on the dirt path. As was normal with her, she walked without a sense of destination. Often the journey meant more to her than where she ended up. And, often, where she ended up someplace she did not intend. Rio didn't understand that, honestly. Even if she had a place in mind to go, she ended up somewhere else.

It make life interesting,, to say the least.

Unfortunately, it also seemed to her that she had no idea where she was most of the time. Wandering into a swamp or a patch of forest like this one, walking though the dappled sunlight. It was a nice day,, she couldn't help but admire it, enjoy it even. The cool shade, the warmer sun, the silent forest... Wait, that wasn't right. Forests weren't supposed be this quiet, not normally.

It only took a moment to conceal herself in the brush alongside the road. It was prudent to hide until she knew what she was dealing with. Rio was young, after all, and she would do the world by being sent to Valhalla so soon.

There had to be something nearby that had scared the forest into silence, and she would do well to find out what it was before she made a plan. Perhaps it was best to run, but she had to be sure it was something she should run from. It might just be a larger Soquili had wandered into the woods and startled the birds nearby into silence and the smaller creatures into stillness. But, it could be something worse. A skinwalker, a kalona, something like that. Something that would assume that just because she was small, that she was weak. In most cases, she could defend herself long enough that she could get away, or have one of the others come to protect her. She was learning how to fight, because the only way for someone to be sent to Valhalla was by death at the hoof, or paw she supposed, of a Valkyrie. And not all of them could be so willing, in all honestly.

Ducking down behind one of the larger trees, she waited, body still as the silence around her, eyes narrowed to keep their red glow muted. It would still show, though, to anyone whose really looking but unless they knew of her, it was likely they would mistake the glow as their imagination or something. After all. there were a great many stories that start with glowing red eyes in the dark.

As he wandered along, the leages eaten up by dancing steps and cyan hooves, Arioso kept an eye on his surroundings. The sun was treading steadily higher, close to reaching its highest point. Soon enough the remaining morning chill would be washed away by high sun, the day drifting into the heat of early afternoon. It would be a good time to swim, if he could find such a place.

It also meant that his family would certainly notice he was missing, if they hadn't already done so. They might have believed he was playing hide and seek with his sister, or with them without their knowing. But if he didn't show up for the noon meal and the nap that usually came from storytime afterwards, they'd go looking. And it might take grandsire with his skill at tracking to find Arioso, but they would, eventually. Adult legs could traverse the distance quicker than a foal's, and they knew more of this land to begin with than he did.

"At least I got to get out and see a bit." He sighed, slowing to a walk as he peered around the increaslingly shadowy woods. "I wonder if there is anything interesting here..."

Craning his head around a bent and gnarled tree, Arioso peered into the shadowed path beyond his sun-dappled route. There was a scent of damp, of wet leaves and the mushrooms that fed on them, of dark and cool, rich black earth and plants that fed well on the death of something else. Here it was quiet, only a whisper of wind stirring the dark leaves.

But there was something in the dark, buried under the scent of the leaves and water. Something that reminded him of his family, of the song his grandmother sang to him when she wanted him to sleep. Even as the scent of mold and water made him shiver, Arioso considered stepping into the dark to search for it... To see if he could get close enough that the melody would grow louder, would turn into something he could truly recognize. If he could recognize it, maybe he could trace it...

Still, the dark gave him pause. There was no cheerful birdsong here, no sound of squirrel or rabbit or raccoon. It was, unsettling to say the least, and somewhat dull. There was no one to question about it, which made a certain kind of sense. It was likely that a Kalona or a Skinwalker denned in the woods beyond, or some other strange creature, a demon perhaps. Something that thrived on death and reveled in the dark, something that would do him harm if it had the chance.

"Maybe, not quite the thing to explore." Arioso determined, stepping backwards slowly. "At least not without..."

Backup. Company? Something.

On the heels of the thought came a low snapping noise, like something large moving through the woods. "Uh oh.. what was that?"
