At some point, Gehenna had lost his sense of direction. He had picked the first path that lead him away from the woman he had left slumped in an alley and walked until he didn't even recognize the part of town he was in. He'd found his way into some dimly lit, pleasantville suburb of Destiny City and stopped only when he came face to face with a short, squat willow tree at the fork of two lazy, quiet roads.

He paused there to look down each, both nearly indistinguishable between their perfect hedges and tiered upper-class homes. Some of the yards were bigger than parks he knew and he was willing to bet these people had spent more money on the gold initials centered in the ironwork on their fancy front gates than he had spent in his entire lifetime. But who was he to judge what they found joy in? At least these were peaceful, non-threatening members of society. They just wanted to groom their rose bushes and have brunch in the morning. That small thought, at least, made him laugh.

He brought both hands up to his face and pressed his palms harshly into his eyes, trying to use the pressure to smudge away his own memories. With no decision leaping out at him about which path to continue, he opted to stop right where he was. He walked forward through the hanging curtains of the willow and let himself lean first into the trunk before slumping to the ground with a single knee bent. His gauntlet, the source of his power and magic, was propped against his knee. His eyes stared down at it like it was a demon, attached to him and impossible to remove.

He flexed the fingers once, then dropped his head back against the tree. Through the long willow fingers, he could see bits and pieces of the night sky and the soft glow of a nearby, decorative street lamp. It was a peaceful place, far away from the war. He could at least pity himself here, alone.

The glow of an order aura (Knight... Squire specifically) had caught the eternal senshi's attention and after a little thought, she had given up her normal patrol route to follow it. She was curious to see who it was, though second level signatures were not normally the ones she went chasing after. Ever since that night in the park though, the trip to her asteroid, Ida had been keeping an eye out for Hvergelmir when she patrolled. The young woman had been so sweet, understanding and patient with her when she had fallen apart... she just felt the need to keep an eye on her when she could. Make sure she was okay.

The signature drew her into the wealthier part of town, a section Ida did not normally patrol. Her home was in the suburban/business section, a place filled with small businesses rather than corporations. Middle-class people, blue collar. The young woman admired the lovely gardens and lawns as she trotted across their roofs, being careful not to disturb shingles as she went. These were the types of people who kept her family in business, long term. One-time sales for special occasions were a good chunk of their revenue, but the homes that regularly decorated with fresh cut flowers were steady, reliable income. It made her wonder, though, what Hvergelmir was doing here... did she belong to one of these upper class homes? They hadn't really talked after they'd gotten back. The thick, black blood that soaked the grass of the park had put a damper on any sort of conversation.

When the signature finally stopped, Ida picked up her pace to close the distance, approaching the fork in the road and the lazy, drooping willow that stood there. Where...? Oh, under the branches. There was no telltale flash of white between the trailing leaves, so sadly, it wasn't Hvergelmir in her ethereal dress, but that wasn't a bad thing either. Meeting new people was good too. Gold heels crunched on the tar of the road as Ida touched down from the house next door, approaching the tree with easy steps.

"Hello?" She called, tilting her head to keep her hair free of leaves as she pushed aside the willow's branches. Her braid slid down her shoulder with the lean, swinging free by her side. "Hi, um... are you okay?"

It looked like a guy... red and gold armor, big build. Not as tall as Björn, though it was hard to tell with him on the ground. The posture was worrying though... someone who was 'okay' didn't slump like that.

The aura had sparked on his senses once she was within the vicinity and he hoped against hope that whoever it was, they would keep moving on and ignore the Squire's aura sitting beneath a tree. He was just here, minding his own business, and that's all he wanted everyone else to do.

Of course, those frilly skirts were always too nosy for their own good.

His eyes drifted down from where he'd been staring blankly up at the sky and landed on the woman that had stooped beneath the shield of the willow curtains. For a long moment he didn't say anything to her, as he didn't really want to talk about it but his conscience couldn't handle an outright lie either.

So instead, he resorted to subject changes.

"Why are you glowing?" His eyes narrowed skeptically at her face and the elegant patterns traced across her skin. He tried to appear as non-plussed as possible but he was starting to feel the pain of Cinnabar's blows and his own panic had caused a feverish sweat to break out across his skin. There was no pretending you were okay when your body gave you away.

The question came out of nowhere and it left Ida nonplussed, stopping inside the ring of branches to wrap a hand around her glowing arm and rub the skin lightly. It made her feel self-conscious, that it should be the first thing he noticed... even if the placement and the glow begged the question of how it could not be the first thing he noticed. Her face heated, but in the darkness under the tree it was probably, thankfully, covered by the brightness of her glow. Ida dropped her hand and spread both as she shrugged and then clasped them behind her back.

"I don't know for sure... I did something that made my planet respond and it left me glowing like this." Behind her back, she trailed her fingers over the marks again in those small, restless motions she did whenever she was uncomfortable. Some day she would get used to it, she was sure... she would have to, because she was pretty sure the marks weren't going to go away.

Ida studied the Squire with a considering look as she moved slowly closer, each step gauged for how comfortable he was. Even if he hadn't answered her question, she could see for herself that he didn't look good. There was something wrong, but the real question was what and why he was here of all places. Once she reached a comfortable distance, the eternal crouched down to sit on her heels, her knees neatly together as she rested gold-bangled hands on her thighs.

"Are you injured?" She said, choosing to be direct with him. "I don't know what happened, but if you are, I can help. My name is Ida." Her sphere should have been pretty obvious and it felt... weird to tack that on like it was some sort of title. At least right now anyway, in this intimate space with him on the ground in a heap of metal.

Great. Now she was doing that weird girl thing where they tried to hide how uncomfortable they were with lots of awkward posture changes. He sighed and shut his eyes while she explained what had happened, not that it made a lick more sense when she did.

"I didn't know that planets could communicate with you poofy skirts. Seems like a pretty weird way to get a message across. You look like a lite brite." Normally there would have been a hint of humor with his words but he was to exhausted. His words were gravelly, like he had a sore throat, and barely more than a mumble unless he put effort into speaking loudly. He heard her moving though, so he supposed it didn't matter. When he finally opened his eyes again, he wasn't that surprised to see her sitting in front of him.

Ghen was beginning to think that these women took oaths to be too helpful on purpose. Except for Nemesis. She had obviously missed orientation day.

"There's nothing you can do that will help what's wrong with me, doll." His eyes were open, and he was attentive, but he kept his head leaned back against the tree like it was too heavy to support on his own. "I feel like I was hit by a bus three days ago. It's just the penance." He tried to shrug, but he was weak and it ended up being little more than a shift of muscles beneath his armor.

"I'm Gehenna, since we're sharing."

Oddly enough... she found the term 'Poofy Skirts' amusing. It sounded derogatory, but considering she was one of the few senshi she knew who actually had poofy skirts? It didn't have much sting. The lite brite part did a little though, but she brushed it off. It was true, wasn't it?

"Its only happened three times that I know of, and one of those was a knight, so I'm pretty sure its not just 'poofy skirts' the planets are talking to. It seems to have something to do with our past lives... Ganymede and I took vows after getting some memories on our planets. Another knight told me Babylon did something with his ancestor's starseed." Ganymede had also seemed to be against telling people about this glow thing, but considering it was pretty dang obvious something had changed about them, she didn't see how hiding it was going to do any good.

He looked tired. Beaten. A fight gone bad? Probably... but not too bad, since he was alive. The 'doll' part made her face heat up, but she ignored it, a line appearing between her brows as something teased the back of her mind. She could feel energy buzzing under her skin... she'd felt it ever since that night and once the dreams had stopped and she'd started getting normal sleep again, the feeling had only gotten stronger. If... if she could give him some of the excess...

"Gehenna." She said, testing out the name on her tongue. It sounded strong, like how she imagined he looked when he wasn't... broken, or whatever this was. "Actually... there might be something..."

Her voice came out a little absently as she reached for him, tentative in case he didn't want the contact. But... she needed to put her hands on him, she didn't see any other way to do this. It made her a little nervous, which was silly. She touched people all the time, but what she wanted to attempt felt weirdly intimate. It was Ida's energy buzzing inside of her... she was the only one who had ever felt it. Sharing it felt right, but... strange.

"Hold still." Ida said firmly in a no-nonsense voice, the kind of voice she used when her young brother need a warning against pushing her buttons. Reaching out, the senshi put her glowing hand lightly on the side of his face, the other resting on his knee. She didn't know if she needed skin to skin, but then, she didn't even know if this was going to work. The more she thought about it, the more sure she was that she wanted to try it, though. Eyes closed, Ida felt around the power inside of her and then just... opened herself up to the man she was touching.

It was a bit like holding a door open to let the water it was holding back rush out. She had to focus to keep it open and it took effort to do, but once open the energy flowed easily out of her. Unable to see it, she didn't notice the glow down her face and arm as it brightened, but she felt the extra energy pass from herself to Gehenna. It maybe wouldn't help heal him if he was injured, but... it felt warm, like sunlight. Soothing. She hoped it would give him some small boost, give him comfort. He seemed to need something.

When the last of the extra energy left her, Ida sighed in satisfaction and opened her eyes, her hand lingering a moment before she started and pulled it back. Awkward... stroking some stranger's face.

"Ah... how's that? Better?"

The reasoning behind it made sense but unfortunately, it also made his mind spiral back into the place he had crawled under the tree to mope about in the first place. These people had done something so right that their starseeds were making them glow with shiny perfectness? If he'd had the energy, he would have laughed at the fact that he was probably faced with his complete opposite in this moment. He had been too ashamed to go to Gehenna for months and even more so now. If those places could give someone more power, couldn't they take it away too?

Maybe that was what needed to happen.

His eyes dropped as his mind strayed, lulled into silence by the somber turn of his own thoughts. The deep, dark pools focused on his own hand and for a moment seemed to forget that she was sitting there at all. Though her words registered, it wasn't until he felt her hand reach out and touch his face that he actually realized what she'd said.

With confusion plastered across his face, his eyes flashed up to stare back into hers. He didn't beat her hand away or move out of her reach, but the skepticism was written clearly for her to read. It was only as her eyes closed that he felt a small moment of protest rise within him, fueled as the elegant markings grew brighter. Yet, as he opened his mouth to speak against it, the warmth of her energy broke his resolve and the words died on his lips before they'd ever started.

It flowed out from her fingers like a warm caress, a summer heatwave breaking waves over his skin. He caught a hissing breath between his teeth and sank back into the tree again, rendered speechless as the warmth eased the soreness of the exhaustion that had settled in his bones and filled some empty place in his core. As her hands retracted, he watched them.

"Better," he said gently. His voice was less gravely as he spoke, though there was something in his demeanor that said physical exertion hadn't been his only problem. He was grateful enough to put that aside for now as he watched her face, curious. Though he didn't pretend to be an expert on this, he suspected that she had just replenished whatever he ran through every time he called his magic. Energy? His fingers flexed without thought, but he'd be damned before he tried that near her.

"Thank you," his eyes flickered away from her face in the wake of awkward gratitude. "Just be careful who you give that to, hm? I know the feel of something too easy to get addicted to."

The way he looked at her, that surprised and grateful expression of someone who had gotten something unexpected and welcome... It made Ida blush and she looked away as he did, fiddling with the compact that hung around her neck. It was a pleasure to know that she had managed to do something for him, but the attention put flutters in her stomach.

"Oh, good. I wasn't sure if that was going to work or not. So, You're welcome and, ah... thanks for letting me test it out." She said as she settled back, lowering her knees to the grass and sitting back lightly on her feet. His comment drew a sad smile from her and she shrugged, lifting and dropping shoulders under her hood.

"I'll be careful." She promised as she ran her fingers lightly over the embossed symbol of Ida, tracing the ridges. What a strange thing to consider... someone being addicted to the energy she'd just discovered she could share. Could Ganymede do that too? She hadn't mentioned it, but there was a lot about this whole business they didn't fully understand. New things seemed to keep popping up, making her wonder just how much she had really been changed.

Lifting her eyes, Ida gave the knight a side-long look from under her lashes, studying him while trying not to seem to. He looked better... rested a little easier than before. When she realized she'd fallen from studying his health to admiring the wild sort of look his dreads gave him and the line of his jaw, the senshi cleared her throat awkwardly and straightened up, forcing her attention back to 'business'.

"What happened?" She said, trying to keep her tone light. "If you don't mind my asking."

When the question passed her lips, he winced. Without meaning to, she was poking at a bleeding wound that he had been trying his hardest to pretend was little more than a scratch. Of course, he never would have crawled under a tree to sit and mope about the world if it was really something so minimal.

She'd just given him a gift and despite how much he hated himself, Gehenna felt that part of himself that said he owed her.

"Um", he cleared his own throat and reached out with a hand to pluck at a few blades of grass, ripping them up and tossing them back down upon their roots. He didn't know where to start. He plucked another and rolled it between his fingers, feeling the waxy blade. When he finally looked back up at her, it was with a heavy sigh on his lips.

"I don't know how to explain this to people, honestly." The blade of grass dropped from his fingertips as he crossed both arms over his chest, a defensive position. It was a silly defense considering she was just one pretty, glow-in-the-dark girl that wanted to help but he couldn't help the impulse. His one, outstretched leg twitched, tapping the foot against empty air in a nervous fidget. "I'm sure you know that we have magic too, but mine is.. destructive. I'm dangerous. I know that just sounds like I'm being a conceited a*****e but it's the truth, I can't control whatever.. this is."

The way it sounded out loud made him feel like an idiot, which consequently did nothing for making him feel better about the situation. Could she even understand what he meant? She just seemed.. good. Everything about her screamed purity, from the look in her eyes down to the flavor of her aura. He was just some black hole devouring it.

"I keep hurting people, Ida. People I care about and people I don't, they're all the same to the magic."

Bluefire Dragonz

Ida caught the grimace and the fidgeting, nibbling her lower lip as she realized it was something of a sore subject for him. Granted, that much should have been fairly obvious. No one liked losing a fight, but then, people didn't usually mope around afterwards either... it suggested he had something on his mind. She was no stranger to those kinds of things lately, and it... sort of helped, to have someone you could talk to. Especially, and probably most importantly... someone who supported you. Keeping things to yourself was a lonely business and she knew from experience you couldn't tell everyone everything about you.

She sat quietly as he shredded the grass, her eyes sliding to his arms as they crossed over his chest. It was a familiar pose. Rising up on her knees, the senshi scooted around to his side and turned to sink down onto the grass beside him, putting her own back to the tree. She pulled her knees up to set her arms on them, giving him space while still being present. Hopefully not having her staring at him would make it easier to say whatever it was that weighed on him so much. He might be a stranger, but he was a Knight. He was Order... an ally. If she could help him... she wanted to do that.

"You're not the first person to have magic that affects both enemies and allies." She said quietly, thinking through what she could say to help him. "What exactly does your magic do? Have you... practiced with it? Control, often, comes through learning the limitations, the full extent of what you can do..."

The eternal shifted, slanting him a glance from the corner of her eyes. "Its not you that's dangerous, Gehenna... you're not doing it on purpose. The fact that it even bothers you says a lot about you. Its too easy to just... not care."

The Squire tensed for a moment as she shifted in the grass to sit next to him, but found that it was ultimately easier for him to deal with her questions when she wasn't staring at him. Even if he didn't want anyone to be close to him then, it wasn't like he was going to attack her without calling his magic. This was safe, there was nothing wrong, and he reminded himself of that as she began to speak.

"It's not the same as everyone else." His response was quick, muttered under his breath in a manner akin to a petulant child. Even he heard the sound of this voice, though, and he sighed again in an apologetic way before he tilted his head to look sidelong at her. She really was a sweet girl, this strange, glowing Eternal. She had no idea who he was and she still wanted to help a man that was admittedly flawed and dangerous.

"My magic.." He stopped and pressed his lips into a thin line, trying to decide the best way to describe it. He cleared his throat before he started again. "My magic takes away my reasoning and turns me into something that completely lacks control. It makes me strong and.. merciless. I destroy anything and anyone that gets in my way." He brought his right hand up to show her, the one that his weapon was strapped onto - a gauntlet, simple enough, but with a row of dull metal spikes across his knuckles. The tips were stained red. At the sight of them, even he frowned, then flexed his hand into a fist and dropped it back onto his knee.

"Every time I come to, I've nearly killed someone. Tonight is was some mouthy Nega but it's not always the enemy." Talking had never been Gehenna's thing, or Kamboja's for that matter, but she was a gentle heart and he was vulnerable. He was admitting what his biggest fear was to her, right then, even if she needed to read between the lines a little to understand. It wasn't that he'd nearly killed a Negaverser that upset him, it was that he'd done it without realizing it. His gaze dropped from hers and he tilted his head back to brace it against the bark, swinging his eyes up to the few stars he could see through the wispy curtains of willow leaves. "I can care all I want, doll, but it won't save me."

Bluefire Dragonz

His protest was not entirely believable, but also something she already knew. No two people, senshi or knight, ever had the same magic in her experience. But, at the same time... there was an over-arching sameness to it as well. Especially among the divisions of offensive/defensive, targeted and area-of-effect...

Dark eyes slid to the gauntlet as he lifted it and she studied the claws with interest. Senshi didn't have weapons... they always surprised her with the forms they took and how they related to the knight that carried them. Shangri-la's weapon was the rod of Asclepius... carried by a Pluto knight who was a doctor in his civilian life. Aventine's weapon was a perfume bottle, carried by a Venus knight who had a gun and played rugby in her civilian life. Gehenna's weapon... a gauntlet on his dominant hand. She wondered how it related to him.

"This might be an entirely stupid question, but... Have you tried simply... not using it?" She said. Then, because she had the impulse to do so, she let herself invade his space again and she reached out between them to touch the closest spike with the tip of her forefinger, 'walking' from one to the next with first and middle fingers in a lazy motion. She only sort of realized why she did this... mostly it just felt right to do, even as she knew it would probably bother him. The invasion was an effort to draw him out of his shell when he took his eyes away and retreated from her, to show him she wasn't afraid of what he obviously thought she should be afraid of, and to show him that, lacking magic... he and his weapon would not hurt her. All contained in a small gesture.

"From what I understand of Knight magic, you have to intentionally activate it, and most of them have a time limit. Why do you feel the need to use your magic when it bothers you so much to do so?" You're trying awful hard to convince me you're a monster, Gehenna, but I've known worse than you... held worse than you in my arms, next to my heart. You don't frighten me.

Gehenna's body tensed visibly as he saw her reach out and remained so as she walked her fingers along the blood stained tips of his weapon. They had caused so much harm, hurt so many people, and she was inviting herself to brush that tragedy through her fingertips like she trusted a man she didn't even know.

Yet even he knew it was silly to be afraid for her safety now because she was right - he was no harm to anyone as long as he didn't use his magic. His muscles unwound partially, slowly, until he had relaxed back into the tree again. His eyes didn't leave her fingers though, he just watched as she proved to him that he was no danger like this.

"It's never that simple." He grimaced a little as he heard himself speak, aware that he sounded like one of those cryptic buffoons. It wasn't intentional. "I always tell myself it will be the last time, that next time I'll be strong enough to win without it, but the truth is that without the magic, I'll be a weak soldier." He uncurled the fingers of his fist and laid the palm flat against his knee instead. Her skin was not much lighter than his own and yet, he felt dark and empty next to the vibrant light he could feel in her. His shame was a stark contrast to something so obviously pure and he had to wonder if the cosmos had entwined their steps tonight just to taunt him with everything he was not.

"I use it when I have to, and there is always a point that I have to." He shifted a little so that he could lean to the side and used his free hand to fish for something tucked behind the buckle of his belt. When he pulled it free, he held it out to her in the palm, glimmering a deep, ocean blue. A starseed. "I got it back, but there's no one to return it to."

Bluefire Dragonz
PostPosted: Wed Oct 08, 2014 7:54 pm

The tension was noted and she very nearly pulled her hand back, but holding out eventually brought reward as he relaxed again. It eased her own tension and she felt a hint of a smile pulling at the corners of her mouth. He was being rather gentle and patient with her, it was a good sign. Everything she saw, everything she heard, made her think this man was as much a good knight as any of the others she had met. Just... a little unsure of himself right now.

She nodded as he spoke, treating his words with the solemnity that they deserved. She didn't take them lightly, she was quite sure that he meant exactly what he said, that he believed things were truly dire. That didn't mean she had to feel the same way, though. She felt the shift of his hand under hers as he flattened it, releasing more tension, and Ida very nearly slid her own fingers between the thick digits. Realizing what she was doing, the senshi withdrew her hand, focusing instead on the shift as he reached for something. Brown eyes widened as he offered her a starseed and she hesitated a moment before reaching to pick it off his palm with forefinger and thumb.

"I've never held one of these before, just seen one, once. And... maybe mine, for just a moment. It happened so fast, I can't be sure." She said absently as she turned it over, studying it with mixed emotions. It was so beautiful... the soul of a person, their life and everything they were... but at the same time, it was utterly horrifying, because this soul had no body. The fact that she could hold it in her hand meant the person it belonged to was dead. Opening her grip, she let the crystal roll onto her palm and she held it gently, her teeth nibbling her lower lip.

"Something tells me you aren't as weak as you think you are, Gehenna. I mean, look at me. Next to you, I am hardly anything. I fight from a distance with ranged magic and only hit things when I have to. With your weapon, I would assume you are close range, like my team mate, Tsui. You're obviously so much stronger than I am, and I'm willing to bet you know how to fight. I just... hit things, and try to not get hit too hard myself. I have little more than a couple of self defense classes behind me and a bunch of flying by the seat of my pants style fighting." Ida said as she dropped her knees to the side and half-turned towards him, offering him the starseed back. "I used to not even have that much. The only reason I'm even remotely effective now is because I worked really hard for it. If you're weak without your magic, then start working to get better so you don't have to use it. I'm confident you can."

One shoulder lifted and dropped in a shrug. "Its either that, or practice controlling your magic, or somehow figuring out some way of dealing with the negative effects of it. Maybe all you need is a partner who knows how to manage you when you're under, who can keep you attacking the right targets and steer you away from allies."

Gehenna let her take the starseed from him and examine it, watching her face as she inspected. He was more comfortable in silence, letting her words wash over him as she inspected his hard-won prize. There was something very alluring about a starseed, in a haunting way. He had seen the face of the man this one had belonged to - right before that she-witch bashed his skull in - and yet, he found it hard to believe that something so majestic could belong to such a mundane creature.

When she admitted that she thought she had seen her own, it gave him a moment of pause. Who had she been fighting with so closely to let that happen? And then he realized that he, too, had a starseed. He'd never seen it, he couldn't feel it, but it was there as surely as the one she was now handing back to him. He took it carefully, more delicate with it than his size suggested he could be, then shoved it back where he'd been keeping it.

"I'm trying to figure it out," he muttered after he was done shifting around again. He drew both legs up so that he could prop his arms across the knees, then leaned his head back and shut his eyes. Despite the energy that she had given him, there was something about the set of his shoulders and look on his face that said he was exhausted. He could still feel the places that the lieutenant had landed blows, aching like he'd been bruised down to his core, but it was a lot of mental tire on top of that.

Ida was right, in many ways, but there was so much more to this. Night terrors, cold sweats, visions. His lack of confidence and the fact that he was hurting people was just a tiny scratch on the surface.
