Arrival

It had taken her a few days but finally Candace had found the perfect place for her and Dakota to go. She felt bad, but she hoped he would forgive her for the delay. He just seemed so..agitated. He needed off the island, even if all they could get was five days.

She had packed for him, had everything ready ahead of time, and now was leading her husband through the portal to the other side. They stepped out into a lush forest, green and alive and teeming with life all around them, but it was still quiet and peaceful. The soft song of birds, the sway of leaves and trees, a creek not far off in the distance, those were the sounds that filled their ears as Candace walked hand-in-hand with Dakota up a fairly overgrown path. At some point it had been a beaten path, worn and frequently used, but it hadn't been taken care of lately. The cottage they approached didn't seem to receive the same neglected treatment; it was like a fairytale. It was well-kept, white stone, and on the outside it appeared to have a thatch roof. The windows had flowers growing on the window wills, and one wall of the cottage was covered in healthy green ivy. "What do you think?" Candace asked as she stopped in front of the wooden door, eagerly turning to Dakota in hope of approval.

Arrival

Sometimes it was hard to pretend to be normal, or even attempt at normalcy. He lived his day by routine now, something he fell into without even thinking about it, but stablized him to keep his mood and his anger in check.

Wake up, breakfast, workout, hunter work, more hunter work. lunch, work, work, dinner, work work work, get three hours of sleep, wake up to nightmares, drink until he slept again, or work after drinking or take a jog around the island. Go to sleep for another hour, wake. Repeat.

Candace had been busy, and he didn't resent her for it. Instead, he tried to think of the good this would do. If it would help him, if it would heal him. The answer in his head always was no.

So he followed behind her quietly, his hands tucked into the pockets of his jeans. he winced looking at the portal and braced himself for whatever came.

he was rewarded with woods, thick and rich in color and sound. He smelled the earth, and a hint of water and trees. It was almost too rich for him, and thankfully nothing like the sand of the sahara.

He still followed her quietly to the cottage, staring at it in a grumpy sort of wonder.

"It's a cottage." He said it bluntly, and then winced. "It's great. Quiet. Nice." He reached over her, to open the door and peek his head in.

Arrival

Candace rolled her eyes. "Yes, it's a cottage. A nice one."

When Dakota opened the door and peeked inside he would indeed find it was decent. It was warm and inviting, opening up immediately into a spacious and well-lit living room. An open doorway to one side lead to a kitchen, another one further down on the same wall to a dining room. And then there were the stairs, presumably leading to the bedroom above.

She put a hand against his back like one would warn a horse they were approaching so as not to startle them before giving him a gentle nudge. "I brought everything here already. Go in, go in~." He needed this. He needed to get away, to just be himself again, to return to his roots. Candace really hoped this helped, she wasn't sure how long she could take his moping and brooding before she snapped.

"There's a lake near here, crystal clear water we can go swimming in, or even fishing if you want. We can treat this whole forest like our playground for the next five days. Anything you want." Candace approached him, stepping up to stand in front of Dakota and drape her arms over his shoulders. "Just you. And me. No one else. Like we used to. No twitter, no Deus, no horsemen, monsters, ghosts, nothing. For the next five days none of that exists. The word Deus will be forbidden." They were getting away. Completely.

She smiled. "We can think of this like a second honeymoon."

Arrival

"Sure sure, A nice one." He did like it, he just didn't feel the need to praise it. It was baby steps after all. But it was nice, and because Candace thought of it for them, he did go inside. He explored, like a child would.

or someone paranoid they'd find him here, even if he knew they wouldn't.

"Fishing?" He perked up, "I don't have a rod." He looked around as if expecting a magical one too pop up. Swimming sounded good too, and he thought it might be relaxing with Candace.

"No twitter, no deus, no horseman..." he breathed out, like it was a personal mantra now. "Did we really even have a first one." He said bluntly, and cursed, meaning for it come out as a joke. It was so dry.

"Thank you..." He came to stand in front of her, resting his forehead against hers. "For doing this for me."

"You weren't joking, I think I can see the ******** bottom." Dakota peered at the water of the lake.

"I think I see the fish swimming around, you sure you want to swim with fish you can see?" Dakota raised an eyebrow at Candace, "They might bite your toes off..."

Too much Quiet means an Ambush

They had decided a walk. Maybe a walk would do him good too. Get that fresh air, get anything to help him clear his mind.

It was too ******** quiet and his hand would tighten in Candace's. Even if he wasn't suppose to be thinking about it, he did.

He thought about the Sahara, and how he almost died.

He thought about the Island and the immense feeling of lonliness. It was too quiet for his thoughts and he felt ambushed by them. His frowned deepened into a scowl.

"I can't do this."

Candace grinned as she let her sundress fall to her feet, uncovering the bright yellow and white bikini she wore underneath. "It's fiiiiine. They're just itty bitty things." She even put one foot in the water, dipping her toes in to make a point. The fish swam away when something bigger showed up. Candace: 1, Fishies: 0

"See~?"

Arrival

"Yes you do," Candace teased affectionately in a tone that clearly said she didn't mean the fishing kind. She leaned in to give him a light kiss to his lips. "I'm sure I can get one."

His attempt at a joke startled her, and for a moment she didn't quite know what to say. Was...was he kidding? She frowned at first, then managed a slight smile. "Then this will be a continuation of our first honeymoon."

Her eyes closed when their foreheads touched, and she slid her arms down until her hands could hold his head. "I love you, Dakota. I would bring the moon down from the sky for you."

Too much quiet means an ambush

He squeezed her hand. Relaxed. Squeezed it again. Relaxed. This seemed like more than the affectionate gesture..

Candace frowned. "What's wrong?"

Morning

Early morning sun filtered through the trees around the cottage, filling the bedroom with a soft light. Candace had become an early riser but that didn't mean she felt like getting out of bed. Dakota wasn't holding her like he used to. She frowned. How different were things going to be? She had grown so accustomed to it before. Fall asleep in his arms, wake up in his arms, spend time in the morning giggling, cuddling, usually losing themselves in each other until either they were satisfied or one of them had to get out of bed for whatever reason.

Would that not be a thing anymore..?

Slowly she sat up, searching for him.

Too much quiet means an ambush:

"It's quiet."

He didn't detangle his hand from hers, but his grip varied.

"It's really...really quiet..."

He closed his eyes.

"I keep seeing everything on repeat."

Dakota scoffed a bit, watching the cowards run away in a hurry before joining her. He kept his shirt on though, when in the past, he would've thrown it off.

Sometimes he hated to admit how vain he was about the scar. About how big it was and it looked like his back was split. He hated it.

Instead he reached for Candace, plucking at her bikini and gave her a very soft small devilish smile.

"It's yellow, I like it."

Arrival:

He squinted at her and cupped his junk. "We ain't trying to scare the fish away with this, they wouldn't know how to handle it." It was a dead serious comment. Use his rod as a rod...hah.

"Are you wooing me Missus Rainstar?" He wrapped his arms around his waist and breathed in.

Just him and his wife. Just him and his wife.

Morning:

He had slipped out of the bed before the sun even cracked through windows. Their first night and he couldn't sleep, but that wasn't surprising. He would cuddle with Candace for an hour, wait till she slept, breathe in her scent and try to sleep to it.

But nightmares followed, and he never rested like he should. He would wake up a couple of hours later, sweating, nervous.

Angry because he felt like a small child, terrified of the famine boogeyman that haunted him. Angry because he felt belittled and weak. Angry because he was angry that he didn't think of himself as normal.

He'd been up for hours now, drinking coffee, watching the sunrise, thinking of anything that wasn't nightmares.

He heard Candace shifting in the room, the slide of comforter and the small sounds she made when she woke and closed his eyes. He should've slipped back into bed, so she would've never noticed.

"Hey you." He popped his head in the room, "Want coffee?"

Let It Go

Thunder rolled faintly off in the distance. It was so far off that it would be a long time before it ever reached them, if it even did, but the rain still reached them. It would probably be heavier if not for the canopy of trees above them. Candace sat tucked into the corner of the bay window in the dining room area, a cup of coffee in her hands and her cheek against the cool glass of the window. She was smiling, eyes following the rain drops that slid down the glass.

"I used to love rainy days as a kid," she said with fondness, sipping her coffee without taking her eyes off the rain outside.
