[ quote="TawnyAngel"]Edited slightly to fit better. Xd

It was several days since she had attended the question and answer session with the riders. She had been thinking about off and on since it'd ended. Vos totally admitted her mind was doing a "what-if" scenario. What if she impressed a green, or blue, or something else? What would they be good at? What if she impressed to a dragon that had the complete opposite views to her?! That would be horrible.

To get her mind off things, the teen had decided to do something physical and active. She'd given a hatching flit egg to her twin, and decided that she'd go look for another nest. A flit for her would be nice, and if she could eggs for her brothers too. But first she had to find a hardening nest. Vos had seen her chores finish quickly today, and decided today would be a good time to try. She had hitched a ride down to the southern weyr of Malvren and then walked down to the beach to carefully examined the sand as she walked along.

It was nice to visit Malvren, she missed the beaches sometimes even though she was enjoying exploring the lands around Benden. Still, it was by the sea that she felt most at peace and so she'd come here to try to clear her buzzing head. There was going to be a dragon clutch soon and she was going to stand for it. Before long she might find herself bonded to another creature for life, so deeply bonded that life without them would be unimaginable. It was kind of an intimidating thought but exciting at the same time, the prospect of meeting her perfect match and never being alone again.

Lost in her thoughts Vee wandered along the shore with Weyrleader flitting around overhead; the little beastie's presence in her mind gave her a taste of what it might be like to bond to a dragon and she had to admit she kind of liked it. She also liked having an extra set of senses to use; the young flitt had just drawn her attention to a familiar shock of red hair amongst the dunes.

Vee changed course to intercept her fellow candidate and brought two fingers to her mouth to let out a piercing whistle in order to draw attention to herself; she wasn't sure which of the twins it was but both were alright by her and anyway, she suddenly found that she wanted a fellow candidate to talk to.

She looked up at the sound of an unexpected whistle. Shading her eyes, she scanned around her to locate the source. Vos grinned at the sight of Vee and flit walking toward her over the dunes. She waved broadly to show she'd heard. The red-headed teen straightened up and arched her back as she waited for the other woman to meet up.

"Yo Vee! What brings you out here on a day like today?" The sea breezes played through her bangs as she waited. Vos gave herself a few fans. It was hotter in the sun than she'd have liked, but excellent for any eggs warming in the sands.

Vee jogged to a halt and shrugged eloquently to the twin's question; Vos? She thought it was Vos. "Just paying a visit home to visit some of the old gang, and getting some sea air," she elaborated as Weyrleader swooped down to land on her shoulders with a friendly trill for the pair of young woman. "What about you?" Vee continued, reaching up to give the flitt a scratch. "Not your usual stomping grounds around here."

"Hope your visit goes well. Yeah we don't have anything like this at Benden." She grinned, and eyed the flit that came in to land.

"Got Ves a hatching flit egg, awhile back. Hoping to find one of the buggers for myself and brothers." She glanced around at the sands, fairly sure there were no clutches on this beach. With a jerk of her head, Vos invited the other girl to come along with her as she moved further away from the weyr. Having some backup would be nice.

"So what did you think of that session hm?"

"Oh, right," Vee nodded, glancing around as though she'd spot a nest just lying around the place. "I'll help you look," she decided, "everyone should have a firelizard I think, Weyrleader's really useful already and he's only a baby really." He was also really cute but she wasn't going to go on about that bit.

"And you mean the questions session?" Vee asked rhetorically, dropping comfortably into step with the younger teen. "It was pretty useful I guess, got the chance to scope out some of the competition for a start; not often we're all together. I learned some new stuff too and it doesn't hurt to refresh stuff I knew already. What about you?" Whether people liked to admit it or not it was a competition in the end, albeit one you couldn't much affect the results of if the riders were to be believed other than that mushy stuff about just being confident in yourself and being 'open'.

Vosin was pleased that the older girl decided to accompany her. Even if it mean that she felt she had to look for an egg for Vee too. She didn't often come to Malvren and wasn't familiar with its area. It'd be good to have someone along who knew the place well. Vos grinned as Vee mentioned everyone should have a flit. "Can you imagine every drudge and ninny with a flit? No I don't think everyone should have one. Plus think of how much they eat!" That would be a lot of extra mouths to feed. Maybe not everyone had the time to care for a young firelizard.

She nodded as they walked down along the beach. The teen laughed. "Competition? It's not so hard as that Vee. It's not like race and the first person across the finish line gets first choice of the dragons. We all stand around and the dragon picks who he wants for a rider." She thought about that for awhile. They were all really on equal terms when it came to a hatching. The more candidates the wider selection for the dragonets.

"I dunno. It was nice to see who we'd be standing next to come Hatching day. Though that one rider made it sound like we could affect the dragon's choice during the Touching. Did you get that too?" What if more than one candidate told an egg to pick it? Would it confuse the egg? Like a gold egg, all the girls would want to impress to a queen. The poor dragon must get so confused.

Vee gave a short sharp laugh and nodded. "Alright, fair, make that everyone useful." The drudges she'd met since coming here had confused her at first but then so did a lot of settled folk, they were all so different to the sorts she was used to but especially drudges with their downcast eyes. Some of them were starting to look up now though, to want more and to take the chance to go after it. Vee felt that the Weyrs must have been a pretty poisonous places to turn people into little drones that seemed to think no more than a workerbug.

"And I don't mean as in we can do anything about it," she shrugged, "but everyone on the Sands is somebody a dragon might pick instead of you right? Maybe they just see them first, or maybe if they're not there you're the next best thing.... Yeah though, sort of." This time Vee nodded, frowning thoughtfully. "If we can sense the eggs and they can sense us then it's like making a good first impression right? If you piss it off when it hasn't even been born it's probably not going to look twice at you."

[ quote="TawnyAngel"][ /quote]

She grinned as the other woman gave into her point. Really if the wherholders complained about a dragon eating so much, there'd be an uproar with all the flits. Vos knew that it wouldn't fly for long.

"Well its thought better to have a wider selection of candidates for the eggs, to give the dragons the best choices possible." The teen scuffed her foot through the sand as she walked. They were still much to close to the weyr to even begin thinking about looking for a nest.

"The dragon won't pick you just because your the last candidate standing if you're not the right fit." All candidates and riders talked about such-and-such dragonet that went between because it couldn't find its rider. Vos shuddered. "So its better to have more chances to find the right match than let a dragon die." She wrinkled her brow and tried to think like Vee. Tried to see every other candidate as a rival for that one, beautiful dragon.

She thought about her twin and her younger brothers as competition. Imagine them impressing a dragon and her not. It was difficult; although she'd be jealous if one or more of them impressed while she didn't, she couldn't stand the thought of a dragon going between because she wasn't a good enough fit. No she'd be happy if they Impressed.

Vos tilted her head. "What if you're the perfect and only match for it and you piss it off?" She asked almost rhetorically. Could that affect the outcome at all? "That's a scary thought if you run the risk of driving away your dragon. It'd almost make me not want to go to the Touching." She glanced at Vee. Alright they'd discussed the serious points, now for a bit of fun.

"What do you think of colors? Regular versus atypicals, boys versus girls." She grinned, "every candidate wonders what color they'll Impress."

"Yeah." Vee smoothed a hand over her head - she needed to shave it again soon - and nodded. "I guess you're used to it but it still seems weird to me that they'd rather die than bond to somebody that's not quite a perfect fit, or that's a bit too old, or who's missing a hand or whatever. Not a great way to survive so far as I see it but I guess they seem to do alright." It would feel a bit insulting to see a dragon go between rather than have her, she'd been told again and again that it was a matter of matching one another not a matter of worth but still! "Guess we'd better just be on our best behavior at the touching," she added with a lopsided grin, "no calling any of them a stinky-shell."

As for Vos' question.... Vee frowned deeper and shrugged. "I don't know, people don't seem keen to talk about that sort of stuff like uh... what you call it, a taboo? Like even noticing the different colours are different is wrong. I'm not sure I'd want an atypical though, I don't want to Impress just to have it die especially after what they were saying about what happens to people that lose dragons, but Weyrleader seems to be getting stronger every day so I don't see why a dragon wouldn't do okay too with the right care.... Can't imagine having a boy in my head so perhaps a girl? What about you?"

Vos skipped beside Vee, and nodded in understanding. "Lots of kids who come from outside the weyr found that hard. It's that reason that the weyrs wanted to provide as many candidates for selection as possible." This was familiar ground for the teen. She understood this. Dragons came in as many personalities as people did. To increase the chance of them finding a compatible match one had to provide lots of kids for selection. She tilted her head in thought.

"I believe whers are a bit different though. They bond to whoever feeds them without regard for what the person is like." Lots of ex-candidates turned to wherhandling. She gave a laugh, "not unless the egg has a bent for name calling!" Vos sighed. It'd been so hard to remain on the good graces after she and her twin had tried to sneak off with the traders. There was so many fun things to do that apparently the adults didn't approve of her doing. At least not right now.

They were quite a bit a ways away from the wherhold, except if you rode a dragon. Vos kept her eyes scanning the sands as they walked and talked. She tilted her head at the older girl's frown. "That's true. Every color has their advantages and weaknesses though." She paused to think for several steps. "I think every candidate has one, or maybe two, colors that they hope they will Impress. So maybe they don't talk about it so the candidates don't get fixed on that one color and drive away a dragonet that isn't that color but could still Impress to them." It was a thought, and maybe something she could ask the candidate master on.

"I think that talking about the color's differences isn't a bad thing, but maybe its worse here since the wherholds say they are all about equality." Vos gave a stretch and dug her toes into the warm sand. "I don't think you'd let it die Vee. You're not the type to neglect your dragon I think. It sounded like those who neglect are the ones in danger of having their dragon die." Really, if baffled Vos that someone could do that. A dragon was a part of you, so how could you let part of yourself be neglected?

"A girl hm? Probably a green then. But what if an atypical wanted you? Would you push it away?" Could someone be so fixed on a certain color they wouldn't, or maybe couldn't, accept another? Vos hoped Vee wasn't like that.

It made sense she guessed, much as anything to do with dragons did. They were lovely creatures, sure, and they were vital to the world but it was all a bit mad really so far as she saw it.

"That's right, Whers'll take you no matter what," she nodded to Vos' words on whers, feeling on firmer ground here given her relative familiarity with the beasts. "Not like dragons!" she continued with a snort. "Personality being a thing I can just about get my head around but bronzes and golds? How the shaff does that make even a lick of sense? Tch, still, I guess at least that means if either colour hatches I don't have to pay attention to them other than keeping out of their way, focus on something that'll actually have me." It wasn't a big deal really she guessed, strange of course but the big metallic dragons were so rare that them refusing to even glance at her didn't affect her chances all that much.

"And I wouldn't turn an atypical colour away," Vee continued, shaking her head and reaching up to give Weyrleader a tickle under the chin. "Whatever dragon wants me is fine in the end and I'd do my best for it whatever colour it was, even if it was some mad bronze that forgot about the 'no girls' bit." The dark-skinned young woman laughed briefly and shook her head. "Now that'd piss the Weyrs off, right? Mmh, yeah though I guess a green would suit me fine which is good because aren't about half of dragons green anyway?... Hey," Vee grinned and punched Vos lightly on the shoulder in a playful manner. "And you didn't tell me what you might want! How about a crimson? It'd go with your hair! Or maybe a green for you too to match your eyes? A girl's got to coordinate with her dragon, right?"

"Maybe that's why so many candidates who age out go into wherhandling," she laughed. "If I didn't Impress, I might consider that too." Vos didn't know where that would leave her. Surely wherhandling had to be better than doing something more mundane, like herding. Although the runners didn't seem so bad, just stupid. Hopefully she'd never have to consider either of those options. She really wanted to ride a dragon.

The teen tilted her head as Vee turned the topic to golds and bronzes. Golds would only choose a female rider, and bronzes would only choose a male rider. Female and male. "I guess its because golds are like mothers and bronzes are like fathers?" She scratched her head as she tried to reason it out. Only those two colors cared what gender their rider was. So why didn't the others? "Ugh, that would have been an excellent question too!" She shook her head. Vos grinned mischievously as Vee's assumption, "not unless a gold wants you." There would be irony there.

She grinned at the cute flit. "Tongues would be flapping from here to Malvren Weyr! There abouts I think," she confirmed for the number of green hatchlings. They were numerous by far. Vos wondered if anyone had ever turned away a dragonet trying to Impress to them just because of their color. She didn't remember hearing about any since she'd been a candidate. Most kids were so happy to have a dragon the color didn't matter in the end.

Her thoughts were pulled back by a light punch to her shoulder, and she ducked her head. Vos scampered around with a laugh until she was in front of Vee then started walking backwards. "Hmmmm you're right they could match." She picked up her braid and pretended to examine it, "do you think I should make a request to Banshidheth?" She grinned. The gold would probably smack her for impudence. "I've thought and thought about what color I wanted. Honestly I just want a dragon that I can be useful with. I want to make a difference." She didn't want to be another deadbeat rider. Perhaps that was her biggest fear; falling blindly into ranks and never thinking for herself.

Vee positively cackled, her nose crinkling up and her dark eyes sparkling with good humor. "Best get your order in early before the rush, there might be a run on them! Yeah though," she nodded, "I'm going f'whers if I don't Impress a dragon before I'm twenty one, grew up around one so I know them well.

"No gold's after me though," she continued with a slight grin and shake of her head, "they have certain other rules for who they won't go after, right?" With the Wild Whers nobody had ever cared about that kind of thing so it had been a bit of a surprise to Vee to find out how many Holdborn people thought it was about as bad as drowning babies. Weyrborn didn't care though and so she didn't care about telling Vos, or rather she wasn't wondering if not hiding it was going to lead to her having to give somebody a hiding.

"I guess that's a good answer though," Vee added after a moment of speculation, "I mean any colour can do anything here, except golds can only end up wingleader within the flamethrower wing but we don't even know if one of them'll hath yet. I think I want to be a Warden," she nodded for emphasis, "fighting's what I'm good at and I don't think a dragon that hates it would pick me." Wardens got respect, were the toughest of the tough and would be expected to lead the charge in battle; that was what she wanted to be.

She joined Vee with a loud laugh. "Yeah, though if I put in an order it takes half the fun of not knowing what color I'll get in the end." Vos nodded, "so you're already familiar with them. That's neat. If I recall, wherhandlers don't help eggs crack right?"

Vos gave a shrug and said mysteriously, "you never know..." The teen thought hard. Something else, something else. Now what was it. "Oh! hetero women for golds and hetero men for bronze right?" She looked at Vee to see if she'd guessed right. That's what she was talking about right? Did that mean Vee wasn't interesting only in men or not at all? Well then that could pose a problem unless the gold didn't care, which obviously she did. Vos sighed.

She quickly perked up and grinned as Vee approved her answer. It was something she truly desired. To make an impact upon the world instead of flying lazily through it. The teen turn to walk along side the older girl again. "Hmmmm maybe a Searchrider for me? I want to see the whole world." She might have had a stary look in her eyes for a moment. To see the world from the back of a magnificent dragon, to positively impact and guild that world. What more could a girl ask for? Vos liked to dream big or go home, and home wasn't an option.

"A fighting dragon hu? That could be interesting. Say Vee. Do you have any siblings?" Vos walked with her hands clasped behind her back as she looked up at the sky.
