Resupply Mission 5A Location: General Groceries Images:: x, x, x. General debriefing: With portals more or less back up and running, Deus Ex is in sore need of supplies. As the island is currently unable to sustain life and not all hunters know how to hunt or fish AND with the holiday season coming up, it has been decided to have hunters scavenge food from a place they're familiar with: a grocery store. Care has been taken to ensure that hunters do not visit a General Groceries in or near their home towns; civilian outfits requested, leave your coats on the island. Hunters have also been granted a $300 budget. To share. * E class difficulty level (must have a team of three, at least one of them must be an intermediate trainee)
MECHANICS
* MECHANICS: RP assembling a team, as necessary, before heading towards the Lighthouse portal to request a portal to Resupply Mission 5A. Once there, roll a 100-sided dice and match the roleplay to the results below, as well as any reactions. * Shopping Cart: The mission starts with an empty cart: 0/100 units. When you roll a dice, you will either gain or lose units OR items. Keep track of what items you've picked up AND how many units they're worth. The team shares the same budget, however it is up to you and your group whether you want to share a shopping cart. Sharing means you're unlikely to go over the budget, but you're also not going to bring as much back... * Players can continue rolling until any of the players roll a CASHIER, in which case the CHECK OUT begins. See below for check out mechanics. Your cart can also hold 100 units of food. When you reach this (or go over) proceed directly to the CASHIER.
1 - 5: The produce section of the store is pretty decent. And hunters do need a balanced diet. Pick up 5 units of produce.
6 - 10: This store has a section of barrels. It's not too surprising at first until a chorus of screaming kids alert you to the presence of candy. There are clear plastic bags nearby and scoops, so why not satisfy your inner child and add five units to your cart. As in five fully filled bags.
11 - 20: The cart you pick suddenly loses its wheel! Your cart tips over and spills everything out. After grabbing another cart and loading it up with your pile of goods, it seems to be a bit... lighter. Lose the FIRST three items you picked up.
21 - 25: Somehow you "accidentally" wind up in the soda pop aisle. While making your way through it, your inner teenager gives into the colorful labels and you somehow wind up with five cases of canned soda. Add them to your cart, you soda junkie.
26 - 30: You discover the health and beauty section of the store. Shamelessly you pick up some non-Beach soap and shampoo, and other health and beauty products. Add five units to your cart.
31 - 35: It looks like you're in one of those fancy supermarkets. Or the state you're in possibly legalized it, but it looks like a large section of the store has turned into a mini brewery which offers a vast array of alcohol. You add 5 units to your cart.
As you're purchasing the alcohol, a clearly underaged teenager slides up to you and asks if it wouldn't be too much trouble to purchase some for them, too. Do you agree?
Yes:
Roll 1d10. If Even:
Nothing special happens. If you make it out of the store WITH alcohol, -1 unit however you gain + $20 for your pocket.
In addition, when you return a hunter of a higher rank compliments you on your sneaky ways and gives you a bonus of $50. They also seem to help themselves to one of your booze units, but they're long gone before you realize it.
If Odd:
Turns out it was part of a sting operation! You're arrested on the spot, and your division lead has to come bail you out of jail. You are now banned from doing this EM for two IRL weeks. You also are deducted $100 from your personal paycheck.
36 - 40: As you turn to grab an item and maybe debate with your teammates on what to get next, someone helps themselves to the cart. Lose the last three items you picked up.
41 - 50: Another turn in the store leads you to the pasta aisle. You can't go wrong with ramen, right? Add 20 boxes of pasta to your cart.
51 - 60: A group of rambunctious children races by, some in the cart and others pushing it. They narrowly avoid slamming into you. However, they don't seem to avoid the rather large display of promotional pet food that comes raining down onto you! Unintentionally add 10 cans of pet food to your cart; you thought you got them all too...
61 - 65: You know what every kitchen needs? A giant cheese wheel! Too bad it takes up 10 units by its sheer size alone.
66 - 70: You know what else the Deus Kitchen needs? A non-runic Happy Hot Dog Man. Add one to your cart. It would've come with a free catsup critter and mustard monster, but as soon as you pick it up a kid yells "IT'S KETCHUP!" and runs off with it.
71 - 75: You hear the cackling of teenagers with too much time on their hands while in the dairy aisle. Before you can do anything, one of them happens to chuck a giant milk carton at you before running off. Your character is now dripping milk and will start to reek badly. Though if you haven't been taking advantage of the beach soap, the smell of milk manages to make you smell more like a decent human being. Not to mention you've just lost three units of each of your last three items due to gross milkage.
76 - 80: As you move to compare two items, a frustrated mother trying to wrangle several kids accidentally walks off with your cart! By the time you track them down and return their cart to them, you realize that some of your items are missing. Lose two units of all of your acquired things.
81 - 85: At the meat counter, you spend some time considering what to get. Given the popularity of meat on the island, you decide to stock up. Add 10 units to your cart.
86 - 90: You know what's next to the meat? Seafood. You know what's part of seafood? Crab legs and lobsters. Someone's going to be eating fancy tonight on someone else's budget! Add 5 units to your cart.
91 - 100: CASHIER; CUE CHECK-OUT: - Either your cart has hit 100/100 capacity or you've had enough of the holiday rush, but you're now in line for check-out. After a bit of waiting (and being tempted by the gum -- +1 unit of gum if your cart isn't at max capacity).
- In addition, if you have room in your cart, you have the choice to purchase cigarettes. Not only is smoking a bad habit, but it's one you can easily exploit back on Deus... You can choose to add 5 units to your cart.
- If your team is still shopping, let them shop -- you're just going to check out early and wait by the register. First one to the register just so happens to have the money...
- You pile the items onto the conveyer belt and wait in anticipation as the cashier starts to ring your items up...
- FINDING THE TOTAL: This is why you keep a list of WHAT you have and HOW MUCH of it you have. Match up what you have to its price, and multiply it by how many you have. Everything is priced per unit:
Produce - 3.49 Candy - .99 A Case of Soda Pop (Contains 12 cans) - 5.99 Health & Beauty Supples - 6.99 Alcohol - 13.99 Pasta - .49 Premium Quality Promotional Pet Food - 4.99 per can Giant Cheese Wheel - 99.99 A Happy Hotdog Man - 10.99 Meat - 4.49 Crab Legs - 14.99 Cigarettes - 9.89
Multiply the units you have to the price. If you have five units of crab legs, you're now shelling out 14.99*5=74.95 for fancy eating.
Once you have your total, subtract it from the budget of $300.
- Remember, you're SHARING this budget with your team!
- If you go over the budget, you can either pay with your island allowance OR attempt to run. If you run:
Roll 1d10
1 - 5: You're caught and escorted off the premises. You're banned from doing this EM for two IRL weeks.
6 - 10: You manage to run off with the last THREE items on your shopping list. In addition, they have a picture of you on camera so you're banned from doing this EM for two IRL weeks.

He could have sent a text, it was true. He could have even texted Molly, or Alistaire, and been fairly confident they'd find time to go on htis mission with him. So why hadn't he asked?
Harland wasn't sure. Maybe it was just nice to do things with other friends, sometimes, or maybe he thought that Ever and Zac would make excellent grocery-shoppers. Maybe he hadn't put much thought into it at all. He had, in fact, dropped letters off with both of them that simply invited them on the mission, and today was the day, and the time.
"It'll be nice t' get out a bit again," he said, "without spendin' days of leave." Much appreciated, in fact.
He opened his phone and sent out two texts, finally, just to confirm.

Be right down!
was the texted reply. Sure enough Zac appeared in short order. The skin on his left arm just under the elbow had a new mark in black that went all the way around, it was apparently a fresh tattoo to test out the equipment from the last trip he'd taken off the island.
"Well…this should be interesting." He grinned and then added cautiously.
"I should probably warn, I'm not able to buy booze stateside. So ah, if thats on our list we should have you or Ever do the checkout mate."

"Who am I checking out?" It was cheerful, easy -- Ever hadn't texted back but he did show up, in an impossibly good mood. Hands in his pockets, miracle of miracles he wasn't smoking, but the smell clung to him all the same: cheap tobacco that never quite went away. Just part of who Ever was.
And he paused, as he said it, to check out Harland, a scrape of eyes over what he was wearing, and then Zac. The last few times he'd gone on mission, Ever had dressed carefully. Today, instead, he looked easy and comfortable in the usual battered jeans and layered shirts, a scarf wrapped loosely around his neck and bag draped comfortably over his shoulder.
If they were shopping, maybe he was going to shop as well.
After a beat, he held a hand out to shake Harland's hand, and if he still didn't have much of a shake, at least he had the etiquette to offer. For Zac, it was a smack on the shoulder, not exactly light.

As soon as Zac showed up, sporting a fresh mark around his arm, Harland grinned widely at him, and upon noticing something was different about the tattoos he'd so studiously admired once before, regarded Zac with curiosity. "May I?" he asked, politely, reaching a hand out to hover over Zac's forearm away from the tattoo, as if indicating he'd like to get closer to the tatt or be shown it. "Looks new," he observed, stating the obvious to probably both of them, but also trying to explain why he was curious. He smiled, and tucked some of his hair behind his ear.
Forget that, he didn't want to be tucking it away every ten seconds while they were on their mission. He tied it back.
"Ever! Good of ye to come," Harland said, thrilled the second he saw Ever, too. It was a nice mix, actually. Harland felt happy to be in their company, and that was more than he could even hope for. He laughed as Ever asked who he was checking out. "Zac, I s'pose, if there's alcohol-- I suspect a fake ID's involved, somehow, if they expect ye to be able to do this too," Harland said, with a dismissive wave at the concept.
Harland had, admittedly, picked up his appearance a lot since he made it to Deus and had the money to do so. Today, however, in the interest of not looking remarkably conspicuous, he had on a white athletic shirt under an undone button-up charcoal plaid one, and a pair of worn jeans with a brown belt. His red cowboy boots and his red bandanna remained, because some habits he couldn't kill unless it was altogether necessary.
His smile only widened as he stuck out his hand to shake Ever's in return. Even if Ever's handshake was still a sad shadow of a grip, Harland's was enthusiastic and firm without being painful-- just like it always would be. He rested a hand each on their shoulder blades, if he could, and prepared to enter the portal.
"Thought it might get messy if we all operate th' same cart," Harland admitted, "but all the same, in case somethin' weird happens, it'd be best if we kept close, do ye not think?" Harland asked, trying to outline a battle strategy.
For grocery shopping.
Mostly, he was more excited about the part where his hands dropped to loop his thumbs through his belt loops and he walked into the portal. He grabbed a cart, and waited to see if both Zac and Ever would select their own, if one of them intended to come with him, or if they would work as a pair.
If all three worked together, he wasn't sure they'd bring much back, but they'd certainly be done a lot faster.
Right by the door, pausing briefly, he found a display with some really good looking red chili fettuccine. He put in like five boxes, but that was kind of pricey, so after that it was strictly the sad packets of instant ramen underneath.

Idk how you guys wanna structure the cart-acquisition xD; I'm good with whatever arrangement, even if it's all 3 on one cart, or all split up, etc. Whichever you both think is best * o*
endejester
Whoever is with whom and whatever carts etc etc! WOO MAN SHOPPING
He made a small ‘oomph’ sent at the smack of Ever’s hand, he cast a side long glance at Ever, arching an eyebrow at him and then flashed a smile before ‘lightly’ punching Ever in the shoulder in return.
“The three of us hum?” He said glancing back to Harland, looking pleased though at the reception to his new Tattoo. “Yeah…did it the other day. Got my equipment all set up.” The grin widened.
“Let’s go then!” He added with a nod and followed close behind Harland into the grocery store.
He watched Harland take a cart and after a moment of indecision grabbed one of his own. The holidays were coming, so the store would want some variety right? And…if they split up a little they’d cover more ground.
“We’re not going to be too far right? Maybe at least two carts?” He offered, hesitating a moment more before giving a decisive nod and picking an isle at random. There were barrels, lots and lots of barrels. Ever mentioned candy last time they were out, everyone liked candy… hell, Halloween and Christmas were coming and those were candy-holidays right? He thought he’d probably made a respectable mix, though he’d watched some of the other shoppers to see what barrels were hit the hardest, assuming those would be the most popular on the island.

"...this is a weird ******** mission," Ever offered easy, his expression somewhat bemused as he stepped away to get a cart of his own -- shaking his head just a bit as he pulled it out of the stack.
"It seems way too easy. Too simple. Wouldn't it be better to just order things in bulk the way restaurants --"
It was at exactly that moment, turning around to follow the other two, that the wheel fell off his cart and the entire thing careened to the right, tumbling with a clatter that turned heads around the store to stare, disapproving, at the tall buffoon who's broken a shopping cart. Ever blinked back, shut his mouth, and then carefully stepped over the mess.
He'd just tag on behind them, and toss things into Zac and Harland's carts instead.

"I'd love t' see the new setup sometime," Harland said, with a smile. He meant it, too. He really liked learning about Zac's hobby.
Harland waved at Zac as Zac went into the candy aisle.
Harland, still checking out that pasta display, laughed as he heard Ever's cart crash and careen. "Too easy, indeed," he said, grinning. "Want to ride in the top while we shop?" Harland asked, being incredibly sassy considering he was normally the politest. He pointed to the top of his cart, where there were little holes in the basket bit for children with their parents to stick their legs out.

Turned around enough by the crash of Ever's dilapidated cart tipping over, he managed to end up in the Noodle isle, not long behind Harland.
Ramen, ramen was good right? You could even pack it up to go places and add flavors and… it was kind of a just add water food, right? Hell it had enough salt it'd probably survive a zombie apocalypse.
He added 20 to his cart trying to space out the flavors.
"It's probably a sad state of affairs that I could say this but, anyone else feel like this is almost too normal?" He grinned sheepishly.

In response to Harland's teasing, Ever raised a single finger, slowly and pointedly -- but with a grin behind it. Not offended by the ribbing, then, just giving as much as he took, and then falling in behind Zac to help him grab stuff off the shelf. He shook his head a bit as he looked down at the younger Hunter,
"I never did shopping sprints in my normal life, at least...and I don't think I ever went shopping with $300 in pocket." Still, though, it was easy and comfortable, patting Zac on the shoulder and turning --
and exactly then, this cart's wheel rolled away too, making him turn back with a start, surprised and annoyed both.
"Are you serious?" It was loud enough to carry, enough that Harland would probably hear, and with an annoyed shake of his head, Ever ducked away to get a new cart and load their things into it. But it seemed to him, maybe, they were now a bit light...

The single finger only made Harland grin wider.
Wandering back to the noodle aisle he'd just left with his own cart, he grabbed a couple sets of spinach noodles and tossed them into his cart as well.
"I think I'm with Ever on this one, Zac; this was never normal t' me before, so it's about as strange as anythin' else I do four ...work," Harland answered, vaguely referring to Deus since he didn't know if anyone was listening.
And then the cart Ever had been throwing things into, Zac's cart, broke down as well. Harland started to laugh, until his sides hurt. "It's like ye've got a naturally disruptive aura, shoppin' cart killer," Harland said, once he'd caught his breath, straightening up and wiping a mirthful tear away.
He was glad he'd happened to be in the pasta aisle to witness that.

"… Honestly, I think you must have done something -awful- to a cart and now they are all out to get their revenge." He said shaking his head slowly from side to side as the wheel that had snapped off rolled away on a meandering path down the isle before vanishing under some shelving where it clattered over with a metallic rattle.
"He helped Ever transfer things to the new cart and frowned wondering where the DICKENS the bags of candy had gotten to before picking up a squishy packet of pre cooked noodles and scowling at it, debating if that was better or worse than the Ramen that was already in the cart.
"… I'm not sure how I feel about the fact this feels a bit like clay." He said offering it to Ever to check out, glancing at the cart he meant to take flavors into account, but it seemed like…
well it seemed like they were short a few packs of ramen.

"It's about on par with minute rice." Ever shrugged at him and then slid away, bemused, to hunt for something fresh to put in the cart. Almost distractedly, he snatched a few bags of candy off a shelf: two of milk chocolate, two of some kind of gummies, and one of caramels. As he passed Harland, peering down to see what the other man had grabbed, he dropped them into his cart.
"Is it just me, or should we maybe grab some produce or something..?"

"Maybe they don't like his attitude," Harland joked. Where were his masterful convincing skills now, huh? He said that only mentally, because those memories of Ever were actually a little personal to him and he didn't necessarily want to share them. That was how he was.
"That's a lot o' noodles, boys; hope ye've got a cravin' for salt an' more salt," Harland remarked, about the ramen slew.
"How's about we meet up at the end of every aisle, so we can take inventory?" he suggested, suddenly. He didn't want to end up with TONS after all.
Harland laughed as Ever suggested they should get some produce. "What, don't want t' die of sugars and carbs?" Harland asked. Assessing the damage, in fact, he did not want to die of those either.
While he was talking, he had absent-mindedly knocked 20 boxes more of pasta into his cart. He frowned, because it was 20 boxes of kraft spirals.
