The Sun training course had opened his mind to the idea that while the division was probably the shittiest place to be as far as turn over rates, they probably had the most fun. As intellectual as Jack claimed to be, nothing gave him the same satisfaction as when he had sliced open those shadowlings.

Except maybe that broken plate. Violence all the same.

The dummy in front of him was bland in comparison. There wasn't anything to be gained by slashing at a still target, not for either of them. Owain just sat quietly in his head and didn't break his concentration.

He pretended the dummy had familiar faces and ripped its stomach open with a swing.

feel free to let Chris straight up attack without initiative! timeline would be after he's gotten Chel confined and observed

If Jack wanted a more interesting opponent, one was marching his way. Chris was red-in-the-ears, permanent-scowl, ready-to-go livid. He hadn't been allowed to go see Chel earlier, because she'd been confined, and he wasn't a goddamned life tech. Ever since he'd been slowly boiling into a rage until even Ava was so irritated she was a constant growl in his head.

He knew exactly who to blame. Chel had told him as much when they'd talked.

He punched the dummy Jack's practicing on, sinking the blade of his gauntlet into the burlap. It was satisfying, but not enough. "Hawthorn," he said lowly. "Mind explaining to me why I couldn't visit my cousin today?"

His gaze slipped from the ruined dummy to one Chris Axten with half-lidded, mild interest. Jack had been wondering when this part would come up. Every action required a consequence or result.

"She didn't talk to you?" he asked with feigned disbelief, making no overt motion to attack or defend save for adjusting his grip on the sword. "I thought you two were close." There was just a little extra emphasis on the last word.

Chris's lips curled up, and he yanked Ava's blade free. Instead of using that, though, his other fist came up to meet Jack's cheek. Skin on skin was even more satisfying than tearing the burlap.

"Of ******** course she talked to me," he hissed. "But I thought, wrongly apparently, that someone she cared so much about would care enough back not to ******** confine her for examination!" He yells the last part, his shoulders heaving. "So the conclusion I've come to is that you're a raging ******** a*****e, and you've been using her because she cares about you. How close am I, huh? Do you even give a s**t about her?"

He welcomed the punch like it was an old friend and let it push him back a step. Even though his shield blunted the impact, it was hard not to enjoy the short burst of pain.

"A raging ******** Jackass," he corrected airily. This was a civil conversation and he expected to be treated with the correct title. "I suppose you'd have, what, just let her go about the base and trust that her problem would go away?"

Jack raised his weapon, but it seemed less out of self-defense and more of a come at me bro motion. He smiled unpleasantly. "They don't pay you to think, Axten, so stop trying."

They don't pay him to think. That was exactly what he'd told Chel. They didn't choose him for his intelligence or his ability to problem solve. They chose him as a human shield.

"Yeah, but they pay you do think don't they? They pay you to put two and two together? Here's your two and two, Jack; whatever the ******** going on in her head? It's only one of her problems. Just before all this s**t started with you at the helm she was worried about being tried for treason. You think they're not going to do background checks? They're going to talk to everyone she's been in contact with, I bet." His face was ugly and twisted in his anger.

"She'll be lucky if podding is the worst that happens to her. And you don't give a s**t." He brought his gauntlet up and struck straight out with the blade. His attacks were wild and unfocused, but they at least had power behind them.

The blade cut even deeper, but this time Jack wasn't passive in response. He caught Chris's weapon against one of Owain's curves, pushed back, and struck out.

"You're acting like that's my problem," Jack retorted lazily. "I told her to stop a long time ago, I told her there would be consequences. And I advised her to use her connections to her advantage while she still could.

"But I'm not her ******** babysitter, Axten: apparently that's your job."

Chris had to take a step back to steady himself after the swing, but he pushed back into Jack's space by bashing him with the arm of his gauntlet.

"You don't have to be her babysitter to give a s**t about what happens to her when it's this ******** serious. She's not a game, or a statistic, or whatever the ******** you see her as. She's a person. One that loves you, for some inexplicable goddamn reason. And you just put her in a worse position than she was already in."

The gauntlet was faster. He didn't bother trying to defend against each bash, just enough to avoid a concussion right then and there, and growled. The beauty of it, though, was that even if he could have put everything into words, he didn't have to explain anything to Chris: nothing he said would matter if the intent was revenge.

So he didn't bother. Jack exchanged his smile for a sneer as he baited the Moon with another strike. Come on, then, let me have it.

Not talking just seemed to rile him up more. Or rather, without focusing on what he was saying, all of his focus was in his anger.

The fangs on the faceplate of his weapon began to glow and he slashed out. He might normally feel bad about causing a prolonged pain, but this time he was glad to do it. He was eager to see Jack suffer from Ava's venom.

Bracing himself hadn't done anything; the needle point went straight through his shield in a way he hadn't experienced before, and Jack found himself gritting his teeth as something noxious coursed through him. He cursed Owain out, but the giant could only rumble helplessly.

I can do nothing to stop it for now, but it will wane with time. Let us return the favor, dear one.

The vines on Jack's weapon grew and wound about the blade, growing multiple sharp thorns and seeming to pulse with life. He backed off for a moment to let the charge prep itself as well as to steel himself against the poison in his system, air hissing through his teeth as he gave Chris nasty smirk.

"That it?"

It was like he could see, just for a second, that he'd startled Jack. At that was a beautiful moment. But it's gone all too quick.

That it?

He frowns, a little unsure now. He hadn't thought of this strategically when he'd started. He'd only wanted to kick Jack's teeth in. But Jack had wiped the floor with him in the sun course. He had no way if knowing if it was a fluke or an actual display of skill.

He brought his fists back up and shook his head, a small but firm movement. "Not even close," he replied, jabbing with the blade.

The poison was throwing off his attention, and though he could feel it starting to lessen, the nausea spun in his stomach and the point of entry still burned through his shield, on top of the jab. It was truly a display of self-deluding confidence that when his swing went too wide, it was turned into a dramatic brandish like he meant to do that.

Jack laughed but his free hand was clenched into a tight fist. He was starting to lose and most of him rebelled against the idea on principle, but a growing part of him just didn't care. It was nice to have something else eat at him from the inside, even for just a little.

"Come on then," he taunted. "Hit me like you mean it, ********, come on! Or I'll make sure they pod the stupid b***h for a month."

It was almost starting to psych him out now, the way Jack just seemed to absorb his hits and keep going. It was like watching a drunk get in a fight, never really stopping to recover from the hits.

"What the ******** is wrong with you? You're seriously ******** up." His words at least brought back some of the panic. He couldn't let Chel be podded for a month. He feinted with his empty fist, but brought up his knee instead to slam into Jack's thigh.

He laughed sourly because Chris was just the king of observers, wasn't he. The giant staggered, but he wouldn't be stopped.

"And you're seriously a ******** disgrace," he shot back, lunging with his next attack. As the blade connected, the thorns pressed deeper, sapping some of Chris shield--a nuisance if nothing else, as it healed back what the Moon had taken away. "Did she ever tell you we screwed, Axten? She's a pretty good lay," he added conversationally, at odds with the sharp look in his eyes. "But that's expected from someone who used to whore herself out, am I right?"
