Rep wasn't sure what could have landed Melvin in the infirmary, things had been quiet on the island of late - well, apart from the little incident with the zombies, but that had been cleaned up - and he found himself worrying perhaps a little more than he might have with anyone else. Melvin was neurotic, and a perfectionist. For a smart guy he also did some monumentally ******** retarded things.

So he got a visitor.

Rep showed up and let himself in, looking over his shoulder at the infirmary outside. "The ******** cunts in this division, cheeky wee bastards. Some ******** guy I don't even know was just like don't break anything. Who the ******** do they think they are really?"

He only interrupted his irritated ramble when he realized he was doing it.

"Hey." he said.

Melvin sat against the pillows in his bed, looking a bit paler than normal but he was recovering. Usually a Hunter could perk right up after a battle, but it seemed, from what he was told, that he had been bleeding out for some time. He should have been dead. At least that's what the nurses continued to tell him, as if he should feel happy he hadn't. He honestly was, because it was never his intent to die. He had cut himself to spare his friends and to free Rin, but explaining that to them was not a conversation he wanted to have. They already wanted him to seek counseling, thought he was insane due to depression, and was just another case of a hunter who saw and been through too much and didn't have the constitution to handle it.

His arm was wrapped up, and while it hurt, he was strangely fond of it. It was a real life reminder that what had happened had happened. It was not a dream. Despite there being no evidence other than his cut, he had done so while receiving a message from Rin. He had to save her. He had to find her.

He had to open a door.

When Rep arrived, Melvin looked up from where he was. He was tired, but it felt impossible to sleep when his body wasn't slipping into it out of desperation and exhaustion. His mind was racing and all he wanted to do was get out of bed and start researching doors. To find out more about the woman he vaguely remembered as a hunter herself. It was like everything was that ringing phone, calling to him, and he didn't have much time to answer. What if his window of opportunity was shrinking at every passing day?

He worried.

Looking at Rep, he offered a strained smile. "Yeah, they are giving me some weird looks and giving me some comments I didn't ask for." Though he wondered if the comment about not breaking thing was tied into the comments he got for not being allowed near any sharp objects.

"Thanks for coming. It gets a bit boring in here and I don't like the nurses so much today. Dr. Stephan isn't being the rewarding doctor that he usually is. I'm starting to kinda dislike him a lot." Despite his perfect teeth.

Melvin looked rough, that much was apparent on first glance, and Rep took in the wrapped up arm with a slight quirk of his brow but didn't think too much of it. He'd seen Melvin do it any number of times, so he went and immediately picked up the clipboard. "Lets see what the ******** you've been up to." he said.

His expression quickly dropped and he put the clipboard back.

"Wow." he said, sitting down and giving Melvin a look of concern. "I didn't think it was that bad."

PostPosted: Sun Sep 28, 2014 3:38 pm

Melvin stared with wide eyes as Rep went for the clipboard and raised his hands to hopefully stop him from reading, but it was already too late and he froze, cringing at he looked at Rep.

HAH! He's doing what you do!

I'm starting to see why people hate that a lot.

He wouldn't believe it, would he?

When Rep sat down and looked at him, Melvin panicked.

"Its Its not like that. I mean, they found me, but I wasn't like – I didn't mean to do that. I wasn't down there for that. I'm not trying to do that. It just…" How did he explain that?

"It happened but there was a reason. Not that reason." He said, pointing to the clipboard that was lying in whatever handwriting had reported his incident.

"I'm fine. Promise. Really. I'm not trying to do something like that. I wouldn't. I mean, I'm still waiting and everything and wouldn't just.." He didn't like thinking about it. He also didn't want to fully lie and say he hadn't thought about it – sometimes late at night.

When he thought that maybe being outside his body would somehow bring him to Rin, but he was a coward and didn't like the idea of doing something so drastic and irreversible when he could still test other options.

Melvin set his hands in his lap, bring one to touch the bandages and despite himself, he petted it with a slight affection for it. "I…it was important. It was something I had to do for a reason. I just…can't explain it …I mean, it's going to sound pretty nuts." He said, glancing up with a hesitant and wary expression of what Rep might think of him. He didn't want to lose any respect from his friend and a hunter he admired.

"You think I've lost it, don't you?"

Rep didn't say anything else at first, just heard Melvin out, sometimes when you surprised people and just let them talk, you'd find s**t out they might not even tell you under duress, silence could be an important weapon. It just wasn't one Rep used very often.

At the question, the redheaded hunter, simply shook his head. "I don't think you've lost anything you weren't already missing."

It didn't matter that Melvin said he was fine, that he wouldn't do it, that it was something he could explain, Rep had heard all the excuses before. He'd tried suicide once, a long long time ago, and like everything else in his life he'd completely ******** it up. It had been too many uppers and he'd felt like his heart was going to burst out of his chest. Afterwards he'd said it was accidental, he'd thought he could handle it, the batch had been purer than he'd thought, all sorts of excuses. But at the time he'd known what he was doing.

"Everything on this island sounds ******** nuts." he said and then carefully added. "If you did it for not-crazy reasons though man, I'll understand too."

PostPosted: Sun Sep 28, 2014 4:01 pm

He smiled again, a small one, before sighing and letting his face fall again.
He opened his palms in his lap, staring at them. "It's just…I don't know what but…"
He licked his lips, throat dry as he tried to wrap his head on how he would put into words what had happened.

"It was like I was sleep walking or – felt like a dream…but wasn't a dream? I mean, it can't be a dream because I was awake and I remember doing this." He raised his bandaged arm.

"I was in the morgue but didn't remember getting there. But I was there, with another woman. I think I knew her, but I don't remember her name. I have seen her around I think. Another hunter." Someone he vaguely remembered but couldn't put a name to.

"And everyone was in the shelves. And the only one I wanted was calling to me. There was a phone I had to get to. And I had to cut myself to get to her."

He looked up slowly to Rep, smiling at he thought about it. "..and it was Rin." His voice was a soft whisper, still delighted at the idea that he spoke with her.

"She was there, and she called me. She was alive. But, she wasn't really all there. I mean, her body was there, but she was on the phone too. Her voice. The other part of her. And she called me. She needed me." He tried to work through the fragments of that night. Through the blood and the phone call, through the woman on the examination table, and the bodies. Rep had been there too and ye the was here. Did that mean something?

He looked back down at his palms and flexed them. He could still feel her skin on his fingertips and the feeling of her curly hair against the back of his hands. "She needed me for something important. I think it's a way she can come back. Back even though she knows her body is gone." It was like Harrison said even if he denied it now. Some hunters could come back, and this was just one of the many ways the world of theirs worked. Where other worlds and monsters lived, there was also magic and the impossible miracles that were on their side.

Miracles that could bring good people home.

"I woke up after she spoke with me. I woke up and they brought me here, but if it was a dream, I wouldn't have this." He said, lifting up his arm. "It means I really did speak with her. It means she needs my help. She used whatever power she could to find me." He looked to the Sun, wondering if he too was just as excited that Rin could return to them.

"She can come back to us." She could come back and wouldn't have gone because she was protecting them.

Again Rep listened - more thoughtful than he usually was - to what the other hunter had to say. Normally it was a serious effort to get him to shut up but right now he was being cautious and wanted to see if just by paying close attention he could find any hint, any hint at all as to the veracity of what Melvin was saying.

He'd dreamed of a woman he didn't know but remembered, and this alone made the Sun hunter immediately think of Clarice. He'd run into her too and it seemed like a few others had had similar strange experiences, Harrison among them.

But while his own dream had been warm, a too-real discussion between friends and a genuine plea for help, Melvin's dream sounded like something fresh from a nightmare. He spoke about it like it was genuine, like it was Rin asking him to come and get her. But Rin wouldn't have him hurt himself. It made his gut twist at the thought, something dissonant and wrong about the whole thing. It was all too grisly, too ******** up for the woman he remembered and her strange dichotomy of dignity and openness. It didn't sit right with him and it was only here and now, like this that he could see how much everything had messed Melvin up.

And he felt guilty. It was ok for him to convince himself people would come back, it was ok to pretend, but deep down some part of him - the part that loathed himself and that couldn't cope with loss or failure in any way at all - knew that it was just a lie. The same way he knew it was a lie when he pretended to be perfect and untouchable. It was how he survived, simultaneously believing his own lies while never being able to fully immerse himself and lose himself in them. But Melvin seemed to believe it and to have gone too far to the other side, where he was beginning to believe everything.

"Listen." he said, and it was hard for him to even get the words together. "Rin's dead." he said. "She is. They burned her. And though like, its a slim possibility she might come back, I don't think she will man. Not in our lifetimes. "

He looked at the floor. "Why would you want her to come back if her body was gone? Why the ******** would she want to come back? You knew her as well as I ******** did man. This is sick, its wrong, it makes me feel nauseous thinking about it. This s**t happened before and it almost ended the world. The dead are meant to stay dead. You'll get to her eventually. I don't... I don't think this is the way to do it." He put a hand on his chest, refusing to look at the other man. "I mean. Step ******** back. Look at the memory you have of her. Not the ******** made up perfect memory you have of her, but the real one. The ********, sassy b***h who got angry when you were retarded and when I was retarded."

He looked up "I bet she'd call that dream retarded, and you for believing it and hurting yourself."

And something niggled at him about the thought he'd just had. "The world almost got destroyed because of Clarice." he said, and distantly, as if recalling something far away he added. "I had a weird dream too." he said. "Clarice was there, she was the Life assistant, blonde and stuff. It was her who needed my help to come back. Rin wasn't even there in my dream."

Again there was that uncomfortable sense that maybe there had been something sinister about his own dream, echoes of the yellow eyes as she'd faded away and the yellow eyes of the goddess of paranoia and her wall.

His stomach twisted more. "I don't think you talked to Rin man. I just don't. You know her. You knew her. I mean. Would she do this s**t? She worked in a morgue, she knew what death was. She understood it. Do you think she'd ******** want to come back as a zombie? Or a ghost? I don't. And I'm no ******** arrogant enough and nor should you be, to think that she will beat death itself to get back to us. We weren't that ******** good friends with her, we let her get hurt a lot. She'd probably rather ******** wait and scold us all in one ******** go when we die, not try to get back so she can ******** die again."

Melvin had waited for Rep to smile. He had been waiting in those few silent seconds that rep was listening from when he stopped talking for him to brighten up that Rin had contacted him. That Rin was here and needed them.

He knew he sounded crazy to OTHER people, but Rep was his one true friend. Out of the small circle, the closet circle he had, Rep was the only one left now that Rin wasn't here. He could only confine something so insane sounding to Rep with the belief that he would know he wasn't lying and with the expectation to receive his support.

What he got shocked him, and he paled, eyes moving as he looked at his so-called friend as he said something he didn't expect him to say.

"..wha.." He started stupidly, blindsided by what Rep was saying, and as Rep continued, he felt himself grow colder, wanting nothing to do with the red-head and feeling both hurt and ashamed he had admitted so much to him. He didn't believe him for even a second.

And he never believed Rin was coming back.

He turned his hands, clenching the blankets and wincing at the pain that spiked up his arm from the cut.

He glared down like a child being scolded for believing in the tooth fairy when he was too old to be putting teeth under his pillow.
"You’re a liar." He whispered, and looked up at him, blue eyes sharp as he glared at the Sun.
"You lied to me."

"You lied to her. You ******** put on a ******** plaque in your bar and you say she's coming back and you don't even believe it for a second. Here I am telling you Rin contacted me and you don't even believe me for a second. You NEVER believed she was coming back!"

"So WHAT if her body is dead. So what?! That doesn't mean she doesn't want to come back. What do you know about what she wants? I know! I know what she wants and she wants to live. She wants to be here with US. People she feels are her friends and there for her. But you aren't. You aren't there for her. You want to let her die in some horrible place like you let her die on that tower! She got hurt because of us and you can't even listen to her calling out to us to save her for one second?!!"

He shoved Rep off the bed, not wanting him anywhere near him.

He then paused and stared.

"Clarice…." He whispered the name that suddenly struck a chord in his vague memory. "the woman…on the table. Her name was Clarice?"

And he had her name. She had who it was that spoke to him. "The one that told me to.."

He smiled, eyes wide as he had the name of her. He had a direction. The person who had led him to Rin, who told him how to open the drawer, and about the door. She knew, too. She knew Rin wanted his help.

But as Rep continued, his focus was pulled back and he felt a betrayal from the Sun he hadn't felt before.

"Yeah, I know Rin. I know how she talks. I know I spoke with her that night and I KNOW she needs my help. And if you really knew her, and if you really were her friend, you wouldn't give up at the drop of a hat just because she isn't here. She was there for you and now when she needs you, you aren't. And why wouldn't she want to come back? Why wouldn't she want to be here with us? She didn't want ot die. Not like that. She didn't deserve that, Rep. We…"

They were monsters and they let a precious thing get destroyed because of them.

He clenched his hands and sat back down, looking at his bandage as he touched it.

"She wants to come back. She's strong. She always has been strong. She protected us. Why wouldn't she fight too and nail to come back?" She was a better hunter than anyone here.

"I know it, and you are letting her die if you don't help her."

"You'd be no better than Medea. Not after all she's done for you."

He frowned, silent a moment.

"I guess it's like you said. Back in the zombie mission. To Jordan. If someone asked you to give up a friend, you would." He looked up. "Do I have to ask for you not to?"

Rep wasn't sure what he'd expected from Melvin. In his heart of hearts maybe he'd hoped that the other man would say that he hadn't realised, that Rep's harsh honesty had opened his eyes and that he understood that his grief had made him lose sight of everything and reality too. But Rep learned a longass time ago that you didn't trust your heart of hearts, people were stubborn ******** and did whatever the ******** they want and lived in whatever ******** delusions they wanted. It didn't matter what you said. It never mattered. You could bare your heart and soul and they'd just look at it and tell you you were wrong.

Well he wasn't wrong.

He narrowed his eyes. "I didn't lie any more to you than I did to myself. I don't lie. Its what I believe, but at the same time I don't." It sounded so stupid laid out like this, but he was trying. "I have to think that someday she'll walk in that door, but in my ******** heart, I know she won't ******** ever. I know that my mum is dead, I know that all of them are dead and they aren't ******** coming back to a shithead like me. I thought you were the same but you ******** aren't."

The gentleness in his posture had frozen over, his arms tensed, his hands fists. "She didn't like it here. She almost tried to ******** kill herself once before, a long ******** time ago. She was never happy here. Even with you, she cared about you but she didn't ******** care about this ******** shithole. You'd bring her back here just so she could grow old and ******** die for your amusement. She's GONE."

He wanted to lash out, to pick Melvin up by the throat and shake him, to scream at him, to beat him down, to leave him on the edge of death so in his fragility he might see his point, he might admit what a shithole this place was, how it was unfit for anyone. "No one ******** let her die. She just DID. There was no one to ******** blame but the whole ******** universe, what you going to do? Kick the universe in the balls? Its cruel. s**t doesn't happen like you want it to. ******** hell do I know that, I know that too ******** well, there's a lot of s**t I didn't deserve, that no ******** little kid deserved, even one as shitty as me ever deserved." He slammed his fist on the bed with a sproing of protesting springs. "But IT HAPPENS ANYWAY. Nothing is fair in this world, ******** nothing."

He pointed viciously and fought to stay on the bed. "You have ******** made her into someone else. The Rin you are ******** talking about never existed. You have made her into some ******** goddess in your head, you've ruined her. The Rin I ******** knew didn't protect me, she tried but she was ******** human, she made mistakes, she slipped up, she cared too ******** much. She fought just to get through each ******** day, why would she ******** fight to get back to somewhere she was miserable? And she wasn't a ******** good hunter, none of us are good hunters. We just do what we ******** CAN until we DIE. And she DID. I will one day too and so will ******** YOU."

And he lost it, the anger and frustration simmering over into raw rage and he leapt, giving in to instinct and seizing Melvin by the throat. "******** LISTEN TO ME." he snarled, inches from the other man's face. "IM NOT ******** GIVING UP ON /YOU/. LOOK AT ME. DO YOU KNOW WHAT ITS ******** LIKE TO ADMIT THIS s**t? THAT I ******** /KNOW/ THAT PEOPLE ARE GONE?" And even saying it he could feel the terrible terrible edge of hysteria that lay in thinking too much about it, about a future where people died and that was all.

"YOU are my friend. Rin was my ******** friend and Melvin. Melvin ******** please." And he tightened his grip roughly. "You need to realize you have lost ******** TOUCH with reality and with that HER. You are KILLING HER MEMORY. And that's all that is ******** LEFT "

He felt the hands at his neck and was surprised, jerking back from the touch. He never liked anyone touching his neck. It was the one place on his entire body he was most afraid of, where the curling scar of Cricket's centipede had burrowed into him when he was 12. Where it remained. Where he regarded as the contact point of his own disease of being a hunter. Of seeing hell on a regular basis when no one else did.

And here Rep was squeezing him there, the grip of not only a hunter, but a full-fledged Sun, and he gripped his slender fingers around the hands at his throat and gasped, eyes wide yet feeling more anger before the waves of panic.

He couldn't say that Rep wouldn't kill him. He couldn't say that. Rep had chopped off Rin's arm before and while feeling bad, he walked away from it. He had killed him once before, in another world. A world of blue suits and animal names and friendly tigers.

He gritted his teeth as he continued. "You did lie. You knew you lied to yourself. I didn't. I believed you. You believed you believed she'd come back." And Rep hadn't. In the end, Melvin was the only person around now that had faith in Rin. No one had hope here. No one was close to anyone. He should have realized that when he tried so hard to have a Thanksgiving with them only to have everyone fight and bicker. People only stuck to those they were intimate with, and even then, those relationships didn't last. He would never have that connection and those values like he did back home.

But he still had something with Rin.

She was never happy here. Even with you….

A chord was struck and he gripped loosened just a moment before his nails dug into the man's knuckles. "SHUT UP! WHAT DO YOU KNOW?! YOU DON'T KNOW s**t!"

He shouted though his strained breathing. Rin had been miserable. She had told him how her friends left and how she was alone, just like him. But he and her and Rep were friends. Close friends. Then one day, she decided she wanted to be more. She told him she either wanted to be with him above everything else, and he said no. He said 'no' because he knew he would make her miserable. Make her miserable just as he made Mia miserable when she became his fiancé and she thought she could change him for the better. When Mia thought she could fix his problems until he wound up making her frustrated, upset that she made no progress, that she didn't make him what she wanted him to be, and then hated herself for it. Until it ended in fights and angry phone calls before silence.

But rep told her she was about to die that day, would end it, and he came to her to say 'yes.' Had he only postponed things then? Or would she have been happier and never have gone that far? Hadn't being with him made her a little bit happier?

She had smiled before with him. He had tried hard. Took pills to help with his problems. Too small steps but never leaps and bounds to loosen his control.
But he remembered the fighting. Remembered how she would sigh when he didn't meet expectations or when he just didn't get things. How she had always been so patient with him and never forced him too far, and yet, had he not forced himself enough to be better?

And when had he ever protected her in battle? When had he ever been an asset to her?

Yet, he remembered. He remembered how she would reassure him that she wanted to be with him. Time and time again. When he told her and asked over and over if she was happy with him or when he compared himself to the ginger who was now trying to cut off his breathing.

And she would tell him, time and time again, she wanted him with her, and he soon grew calm. He soon grew to start believing that it was true.

"…..if she wanted to die….why did you stop her….stop her when I said no to her….you wanted her to live….like me…..why did you stop now…?" He gasped for air and felt alongside his bed.

"…I worked hard …to make her happy….I could try harder….I can…I can make her happy…" Because in the end, he worried he had never made her happy at. He wanted to ask her, just one time, if she was happy now.

He wanted to hear her, one last time, reassure him that she was glad to be with him. That she didn't regret it.

It was harder now to breathe and his words started to deform.

He cringed against what Rep was saying, and summoned Saliva before he pressed it up under Rep's chin.

The Rin you are ******** talking about never existed.

You ruined her.

… she slipped up, she cared too ******** much.

She cared too much, was too much of a good person, that she didn't realize that she protected monsters. Monsters like Rep who didn't care she had protected him with the full faith that he was worth protecting. Protected Melvin, gave and gave and gave countless times when all he did was take. And he ruined her. He forced her to protect him because he was weak. He was pathetic. He wasn't there for her.

But he had to be there for her now. Now she called to him, and now she needed protection. Now she needed help.

"No…there is more……and I'll find her…

..and you can't kill me again…not to protect me….I can't let people do this again….not again..…….queeny…."

And he fired, his hand pressing the Nurse Call button with his other hand.

There was so much he wanted to argue about, he wanted to snarl that he wanted her to live like anyone else but that didn't mean he wanted her turned into some zombie for ever, that he'd pull her back from the grave after the final ******** up took her from them. And right now it was terrible, utterly ******** terrible, he'd not only lost Rin but he was starting down a Melvin gone mad. The guy had always been tightly wound and it seemed like he'd snapped with finality. He thought he could bring Rin back and somehow make her happy. He was delusional.

Rep didn't flinch when the gun was brought to his chin, he held on, tears in his eyes, feeling as if he was losing another friend, that he couldn't stop it. He was no longer holding on simply to shake some sense into the other man, but instead holding onto him lest he vanish the way Rin, Clarice, Killzone and everyone else did. Melvin was going to get himself killed with this madness and then it would just be Harrison and him against a tide of malice, no friends, no one, not even ******** Jordan.

"Melvin. Please -" he said desperately.

The shot rang out and connected point blank with his jaw like a fist, sending him backwards from the bed where he landed on the polished floor and skidded into a wall. His shield recoiled and he could feel it drain away under the lingering effects of the blow. He stood, and tensed his hands into fists, shaking with hurt and anger.

"She's. Dead. And you'll ******** be dead soon too if you keep believing in ******** LIES. And you won't ******** come back in dreams. You won't come back at all."

<> Tracey hissed, the earrings crackling with crimson energy.

He didn't summon but he closed the distance again. "It almost killed you already and you ******** call it a BLESSING. RIN WOULD NEVER DO THAT."

Sunny stepped into the room and looked up from her clipboard. Her normal bitchface dropped to something very flat and even more displeased. "Just what the ********," she began quietly, "do you STUPID ******** ASSHOLES THINK YOU'RE DOING IN MY ******** INFIRMARY?! I SWEAR TO ******** GOD REID I'LL MAKE SURE YOU GET LOCKED DOWN SO TIGHT YOU DON'T SEE A FIGHT UNTIL THE REST OF YOUR HAIR GOES WHITE TO MATCH. AND YOU!"

She turned on Melvin and slipped off a shoe, throwing at his head, "STOP ******** THIS PLACE UP WITH YOUR PERSONAL DRAMA. SHE'S DEAD, AND GUESS WHAT? MY HUSBAND DIED. MY BEST FRIEND DIED. LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE WHO WERE LOVED DIED BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT WE ******** DO! SO QUIT MAKING A MESS OVER s**t THAT HAPPENS TO EVERYONE ELSE TOO YOU a*****e! Melvin watched at Rep was thrown back, and aimed Saliva again, ready for another. He knew that, in bed and recovering, Rep could easily come over and punch him out of his bed. He also knew that, if Rep was in the mood (which he certainly seemed in one), he could summon his own weapon and do some permanent damage.

But in the scope of things, what did Melvin have to loose. Right now, telling Rep was more important. Anyone else he didn't care as much about as the Sun, him being the second only to Rin. In this world, as a hunter, these were the top two people he felt he could trust what they said. Now it was just one.

As Rep gave his own warning, Melvin ignored it. "So what. It's like you said. Die one way. Die another. I should have been dead if it wasn't for her. I owe it to her. You do too. You – "

And just then, the door opened. Sunny was clearly none to pleased, and outside himself, Melvin could understand why. Still bandaged in bed, a Lifer who should have known better was holding a weapon. On his feet, a Sun with a reputation for damage was shouting and clearly starting something.

Neither one of them looked good or innocent at the moment. Maybe without the weapon, Melvin could play victim, but not right now.

The threat for a transfer had his shoulders hunching. Sun was not the place for someone like him, and wanting to find out more, he needed to stay in Life. Her own shouting about losing people fell on deaf ears. It was more scolding than offered reasoning.

The call for restrains, however, got him nervous. He held Saliva, glancing at Rep in case the man went for him again, and looked out after Sunny. "I – I'm sorry. I just..I'm putting her away." But he knew he already ******** up.

He looked back to Rep, considering everything that was said. His one true friend wasn't much of a friend in his time of need. In HER time of need
He desummoned Saliva and glared down at his lap, finding it hard to say this.

"If you're not going to help me, help her, then I don't need you around me."

"Don't bother visiting me again."

Rep was on the very brink of summoning as Sunny entered and immediately leapt back from the bed, all pretense of doing so immediately dismissed as he tried to look as innocent as he possibly could, throwing up his hands in a placatory gesture.

The distraction wasn't enough though for him to miss Melvin's comment.

Don't bother visiting me again.

To Rep that meant I don't need you, I don't want you, you are superfluous. It was just about the coldest thing anyone could say to him and it wounded him deeply. He'd trusted Melvin, he'd considered him a friend and done whatever he could for him, telling him things he wouldn't admit to most of the world. And he repaid him like this.

He almost regretted Sunny being there, blocking his instinct to turn pain and hurt into anger, to take it out of Melvin, to show him what happened to people who betrayed him, who ripped out his ******** heart.

But the fact remained that she was and he was helpless if he didn't want to get in even deeper s**t and hurt Harrison too.

He looked resolutely at the floor.

Melvin would soon find himself with a bracelet that prevented him from summoning his weapon on-island. If he behaved, he'd be able to have it removed in a month. His pay was docked several times over, for damages to his room, and also fees for the time and equipment involved in helping him recover from a suicide attempt. This was his one strike with the infirmary, if he got in another fight, he would no longer be allowed to be there except as a patient.

Rep would find himself with a similar bracelet and saddled with repairing one of the more remote arctic bases, a job that could take anywhere from weeks to month depending entirely on his ability to fix things vs his ability to break everything in a tantrum. Fortunately he's allowed two days back on the island a week, and the base has its net up and running, so he'll be able to text and complain on twitter.
