As promised, thirty minutes later Paige showed up at Zeke's dorm. Well, it was closer to thirty-five minutes because she couldn't find a ******** butterknife for the life of her.

"Yoooo. Open up, my arms are full of s**t. Sandwich s**t. For sandwiches. Zeke. Zeke. Zeeeeeeke."

She lifted a booted foot and lightly tapped the toe against his door.

Paige had gotten one tap in before the door opened. "A little patience goes a long way, Slugger." The door opened wider as he ushered her in, taking stock of everything she had with her. Kindly he took the loaf of bread and a bottle of mustard from her arms, setting them on his desk. The door was left open, allowing Paige to decide if she wanted it closed or not.

The room was immaculate, and just a little barren. Everything was neat and tidy, down to the library books stacked and cornered to one side of the desk. His boots were beside the door, laces tucked, and there wasn't so much as a sock on his floor.

"So what kind of sandwiches are on the menus?" Didn't matter, he'd eat whatever she made him.

Paige merely snorted at his smart-a** remark and kicked the door closed behind her.

"Lemme tell you something. That kitchen is as bare as s**t. I scrounged up some bologna - and I don't know if it's good - and some.. I think this is ham, probably?"

Paige set down the meats before tossing a package of cheese up in the air, catching it again before setting it on the desk - and finally she withdrew a butterknife from her pocket.

"So. Meat and cheese and mustard because I couldn't find any mayo."

Hands free, he rested one against his cheek as one arm folded across his chest to grab his opposite elbow. Head tilted, brow up, he offered Paige a look of very exaggerated interest, teasing.

But he was grinning by the time she pulled the knife from her pocket, dropping down on the edge of his own bed before hooking his desk chair with an ankle to draw it out for her.

"Sounds great." He hadn't had a bologna sandwich since he left for college, and actually that sounded pretty appetizing just that moment. Nostalgia maybe, or just that he hadn't had one in so very long.

"So how are you settling in?"

Paige thwapped Zeke on the upper arm with the flat edge of the butterknife before he walked away to fall back onto his bed. She chuckled and gave a low, "Smartass," before seating herself in the chair he'd pulled out.

"Pretty good. It's different. But like. In a good way, you know?"

She opened the bag of bread and cautiously smelled the bologna before setting it aside.

"How about you?"

The knife swat only confirmed Zeke's growing opinion of his fellow rookie Mist. "Yep."

Falling back, he rolled his eyes lazily up to the ceiling as he folded his hands over his stomach. For a moment features fell into consideration, thinking back to what his life had been before Deus had found him, and what little he knew of his life now. "It is different, that's for sure." Was it better? There were certainly perks. Ever came to mind briefly, and the man smirked, before letting eyes fall closed.

"So far I don't have any complaints." Time would tell, of course. He heard the packages of food rustling. "Light mustard on mine, please."

Back home, he'd have been in a biology lab right about now. "So what did you do before here?"

"Nothing worth being proud of. Dropped out of high school for different reasons. I got my GED, worked a shitty shift at a shitty convenience store. Nothing glamorous or exciting, I promise. What about you?"

She slapped mustard on one piece of bread, bologna on top, cheese and then capped it with a second slice of bread.

"What about you? You got some fantastic story about your life before Deus?"

Paige put the sandwich on a paper towel and then planted it on Zeke's chest before turning around to make herself a sandwich.

Zeke was quiet as he listened, eyes still closed. Opening them only as the sandwich was dropped on his chest. With a grunt he sat up again and took a bite, chewing thoughtfully. It made sense now, how Paige saw the island as an opportunity where else where there had been none. He didn't judge, wasn't his place, though the fact that she'd gone from dropping out to turning around and getting her GED was something of note. That didn't always happen.

When his mouth was clear he rolled his shoulders. "I don't know about fantastic, but interesting, at least." He thought so, in any case. "I was in school, majoring in marine biology." He'd wanted to study cephalopods. Specifically the intelligence of octopi

"No s**t? You must be real smart."

Paige took a massive bite out of her sandwich, mustard smearing across her cheek. Dry sandwiches were the worst.

"What made you come here? To the island, I mean."

She licked mustard off of her thumb before wiping her cheek clean.

"Try to be," he admitted, not exactly humble.

Another bite, neater than Paige's, but he was eating with the sort of enthusiasm that said he was enjoying the food.

"I wanted answers." He watched her lick the mustard from her thumb, scrubbing at her cheek. When she lowered her hand again there was still a little dab there, so he leaned forward, sliding his own thumb over it to rid her pale skin from the condiment. "I've seen the shadows for as long as I can remember. Used to think I was crazy, parents thought so too, so they stuck me in therapy until I was 12." He snorted, taking another bite, chewed, then swallowed.

"Knowledge is important to me. The guy that recruited me offered me a chance to learn about the shadows that have been plaguing me since I was little. Couldn't turn him down."

Paige didn't pull back when Zeke wiped his thumb against her cheek. She did take another massive bite of her sandwich, though, and chewed thoughtfully as she listened to him talk.

"I had a kid. When I was fifteen. Part of the reason I dropped out of high school. I put him up for adoption 'cause that's what was gonna be best for him."

She shrugged. Paige didn't have any regrets, and it was clear in the way she carried herself.

"Started hearing s**t and seeing s**t after that. Mostly hearing s**t. Mean s**t. And then the cops came to me and slapped me with a restraining order and said I couldn't come within a thousand feet of the kid and his new parents."

Paige leaned forward to rest her elbows on her knees.

"'Cept it wasn't me. It was one of them. Uh. Someone who has your face but it isn't you. Dopplegangers?"
PostPosted: Thu Oct 02, 2014 7:52 am

Zeke sat quietly and ate his sandwich as Paige ran through a very abbreviated recount of her life leading up to her recruitment. It was pitiable; a teen pregnancy, giving the kid up for a option, but Paige didn't seem to have any regrets, and Zeke wouldn't give pity where none was needed.

Strong. Paige was strong. Admirable in how sure of herself she was, and how grounded.

Hazel eyes widened as she mentioned the existence of doppelgängers, brows arching. There was a truly horrifying thought, and considerably more nightmarish than the shadows that had plagued the man through out his childhood. What was a few years of therapy, comparatively?

"Did you destroy it? The doppelgänger?"

"Naw. I got arrested for breaking the restraining order when it wasn't me. Thirty days. You believe that s**t? They thought I was crazy. When I got out, Deus had taken care of it and they wanted to recruit me. So. here I am."

She shrugged and finished off her sandwich before leaning back in the chair. Paige toed off her boots and leaned back in the chair before propping her feet up on the bed. After folding her hands across her abdomen she levelled a look on Zeke.

"Guess you could say this was something of an upgrade for me."

"That's harsh on a nightmarish level." Another bite, chewed slowly. H watched Paige finishes her's off before slouching down and kicking feet up beside him. Utterly comfortable.

"Yeah, I can see this being an improvement over what you had been dealing with." A dangerous, albeit it incredibly stable life. There was a certain appeal to that.

"Don't get me wrong, this joint has got its own horror stories." Paige wiggled her toes in her socks and grinned at Zeke. "Pod duty is boring as hell, portal duty is boring as hell. Food is s**t. But ********, roof over our heads? A job?"

She shrugged.

"And I dunno if you noticed but this island is full to the brim with ******** hot ********>."
